Letter from the Editor

Tara L. Robinson, editor@wholelivingjournal.com

Power in Numbers

T

his is OUR ANNIVERSARY issue. Whole Living Journal is 12 years old. Uh oh, does that mean next year WLJ becomes a teenager? Yikes! Okay, okay, let’s not focus on the challenging aspects of the teenage years, there’s actually a lot of really beautiful things about teenagers. Teenagehood is when we begin to grow up and gain some independence. We long to move a little further out into the world and we begin to test our own limits. Instead of playing it safe and following all the rules, teenagers become a little fearless. Fearless is fantastic. I think 12 is a perfect age for WLJ. We are stretching our legs out into the world, our impact globally is stronger every day, we have a vision of where we are going to go. And yet, we are rooted strongly at home. Community is our core. Without support from our community, we would be lost. I want to say Thank You to our awesome community...to the advertisers, readers, writers, distributors, volunteers and staff who make every issue possible. Happy Birthday WLJ. Speaking of birthdays, I turned 40 on April Fool’s Day. In truth, I’m totally embracing 40. Elif Shafak’s book, The Forty Rules of Love, contains an inspiring passage (which I posted on my Facebook page) about turning 40 which caused me to look forward to this season of my life ever since I read it about five years ago. I decided to usher in this magical decade by celebrating in a special way, by doing Random Acts of Kindness (RAOK). On my birthday, all three of my kids and I packed an arsenal of goodies in a backpack and we set off to light up the city with kindness. We paid for the person’s order behind us in line at lunch, we bought coffees for strangers at Starbucks, we handed out scratch-off lottery tickets, we left post-it notes with positive messages on the mirrors of public bathrooms and on the windows of cars in parking lots, we taped quarters to vending machines, we put inspirational cards in random mailboxes and left packs of toilet paper on the doorsteps of disadvantaged homes. Watching the smiles spread that day, from the clerks who witnessed all the action, to my children who were learning an important lesson as well as having fun, to the people whose lives we were touching, was the best birthday gift ever. And there definitely was a ripple effect. The person we paid for behind us in line then paid for the person behind her. I chronicled our RAOK adventure on Facebook throughout the day and asked my FB friends to join me. It was awesome to watch what others were doing around the city as pictures were posted on my FB page. At the end of the day a friend messaged me and said, ‟You’re going to love what I did for your birthday.” It turns out she conspired with a manager at Kroger and gave him $100 cash with instructions to give it to the first person who came in buying groceries with food stamps. She figured it would be someone who could really use $100. She wishes to remain anonymous. Of course she does.

It’s impossible to explain all the ways this RAOK experiment blasted my heart open. What I marveled at the most was how my intention for kindness multiplied throughout the day. More ground was covered by sharing this intention with others than I could have ever accomplished on my own. It felt as if a team had been assembled and together we changed the city that day. There is power in numbers, and there is power in setting intentions. When these two forces are combined, there’s no limit to what can be achieved. This is the idea behind the creation of Conscious-Con. Patty Goedl, the visionary and event producer of Conscious-Con, believes it’s not only important, but possible, to anchor the heart energy here in Cincinnati. It’s a new kind of birthday, it’s the birthday of the heart, and we’re feeling its growth and expansion. Conscious-Con is a call to gather with a common intention to really drive the roots of this next phase of evolution deep into the core of our city. Whether you enjoy listening to speakers and attending workshops, listening to live music, looking at pieces of art, or shopping with vendors, Conscious-Con offers something for everyone. But the point is to gather. The point is to share space, knowing that as we do, the energy is raised. So even if your preference is to sit in a quiet corner and journal, or sit in a circle meditating and doing yoga with a group of friends, please just bring your glorious self to the Duke Energy Center on May 16-17 and help us Anchor the Heart Energy. I’ll be presenting a workshop on Saturday and a keynote address Sunday morning at Conscious-Con. In preparing for my keynote, I became aware that I’ve been struggling with an outdated belief system, one that contradicts my main operating system. See, I believe everyone is unique, magnificent and perfect exactly as they are, and, as Louise Hay says, ‟Life loves me.” However, in the dark recesses of my mind, I’ve also believed I ‟should” be cultivating more discipline and structure in my work. I’ve littered my office space with quotes that encourage me to ‟do better, be more,” while simultaneously crafting my talk about Living in the Flow. The truth is, I don’t like structure. I realized I haven’t truly approached life as a partner, but rather as a parent-child relationship. I’ve believed life has ‟rules” and if I don’t follow them, I’ll fail. I’ve carried a shadow belief that life won’t partner with me on my terms. I’ve felt rebellious about these so-called ‟rules of life” and in feeling so, have created subconscious resistance. Upon bringing this hidden belief into the light, I created a mantra that said, ‟I don’t have to do or be anything different, success will find me.” Immediately after resting my pen with that sentence I opened my email to find that, indeed, success found me. I’ve been invited to be one of 22 experts featured in the Awaken Your Core Fire Summit based in San Diego. More info is in this issue. Love,

Crossing the

Threshold

a Soul Shift Rite of Passage by Barbara DeAngelis, Ph.D.

T

here are pivotal moments in the lives of all seekers when we realize that we’ve been traveling on our path of growth toward happiness and fulfillment, but, simply put, we want to go faster. How we have been living, working, and loving just isn’t enough or even acceptable anymore. We know we’re being called to something more significant and expanded—we can feel it. At these times what’s needed is not simply more change or an adjustment in our outer life, but profound transformation. We want nothing less than rebirth. We are ready for Soul Shifts. Soul Shifts are radical, vibrational internal shifts that spontaneously and inevitably transform the way you relate to yourself, to others, and to the world. For transformation to be real and lasting, it must originate from the inside out, so that instead of trying to constantly micromanage everything, you operate from true mastery at the deepest level of who you are—the soul level. When you learn how to make these Soul Shifts on the inside, everything on the outside of your life shifts. The following is an excerpt from Soul Shifts by Dr. Barbara DeAngelis (Hay House 2015). In all religions, on all spiritual paths, one of the most sacred and mystical physical places is the threshold one crosses to enter the temple, cathedral, prayer hall, synagogue, teepee, or space of worship. A threshold is a doorway between worlds, a mystical border between the everyday and the Divine, and, therefore, a place of potency and grace. In most Eastern cultures, one honors this understanding of the threshold by never stepping directly on it, but always stepping over it, and by leaving one’s shoes outside as a sign of reverence and respect. On my pilgrimages to Indian temples, I have often seen a temple attendant squatting on the ground next to the threshold leading into the temple proper, to make sure no one, particularly no uninformed Western tourist, makes the terrible mistake of stepping on the raised divider. Many years ago when I began my spiritual journey, I was taught that whenever I entered a temple, or a hall in which the teacher was seated, I should bend down to touch the threshold or entrance with my right hand, and then raise that hand up to touch my heart. It was also suggested that I do this on the way out of the temple or hall. No one explained the significance of this to me, but I did it anyway because that was what everyone else was doing—and because I was always a very dutiful student!

In time, however, as I had the direct experience that my teacher was giving me the gift of entrance into my innermost realms of consciousness, I understood that gesture of respect, and why my hand went from the floor to my heart. For me, it became a way of saying, “May what awaits me in this room, over this threshold, go directly into my heart.” On the way out, it was a way of saying, “I am so grateful for the grace that I have received while in this sacred space. May it unfold fully within me.” This metaphor of stepping over the threshold is a beautiful mirror for your journey of personal and spiritual transformation: You have been on a path since the moment you were born into this world, and you’ve already courageously crossed many significant thresholds. All seekers must travel these invisible roads within, distances that cannot be measured in miles, yet are the hardest and most challenging part of the human adventure: the distance from the habit of turning away to the insistence on turning toward; the distance from the frightened part of you that says, “I don’t want to look at myself, I don’t want to face things, I don’t want to feel things,” to the fearless part of you that finally proclaims, “I will do whatever it takes to be free.” We step over the threshold of our resistance, back into the sacred space of trust. We step over the threshold of our fear, back into the sacred space of vision. We step over the threshold of our confusion, back into the sacred space of truth. We step over the threshold of our forgetfulness, back into the sacred space of remembrance. And with each bold, brave step, we come closer and closer to the great reunion with the fullness of our own awakened self.

Finding

Your

by Charles Holt

Voice

I

’d come to LA assuming that I was being led toward the next big step for my acting career. However, booking sustainable acting work proved a challenge. I often found myself, an avowed work-a-holic, with long stretches of fallow time. Without steady jobs, money became scarce and at one point I lost my apartment and found myself homeless. But I was supposed to be in Los Angeles … right? In spite of all that was going on, I truly believed that the voice I’d heard saying it was time to change my life had been real. That belief alone gave me the faith to stay steadfast in my decision. And, slowly but surely, signs began to point me in a new direction.

An Encounter with Dr. Michael Beckwith On a spring day in 2005, as I waited in line to speak with Dr. Michael Beckwith, I thought about how far I’d come since those early times. When I finally got in front of him we shook hands, and I told him how much I enjoyed the service. Before I walked away, he put his hand on my shoulder and said, “You should start journaling, Charles.” Then, just like that, he was on to the next person. Even though I refused to write at first, I had begun meditating on a consistent basis. Meditation, like journaling, was a foreign concept to me for most of my life. Yet for the first time, I realized how important focused moments of silence were to my overall well-being. It was during these periods of silence that I became conscious of a voice speaking to me, the same voice that had led me to New York, and then to Los Angeles. I believe we all have this voice inside.

Awakening to YOUR Voice It is my greatest desire to create a vehicle that resonates to the core, leaving others’ lives transformed and renewed. We will continue to awaken our understanding that there’s something uniquely wonderful trying to emerge through each of us until we find our own expression of that something. The essence of that something is what I, too, am searching to express. To that end, it’s not our “living the perfect life” that’s important, but

rather allowing the divine expression to breathe, live and have its perfect way in us. When I say divine, I’m referring to the timeless, inexhaustible life energy that permeates everything in our universe. I believe that we’re all connected to this energy and it has encoded within each of us a spirit of genius that’s yearning to break free.

Peeling the Layers to a New Way of Seeing The voice of intuitive guidance appears so distant and elusive at times that it seems unreal. However, as we begin to peel back the internal layers of debris, it starts to shine through and we’re allowed to see its grandeur and its power. It doesn’t matter where you’ve been, what people have said about you, how much you think you have or how much you think you don’t have; it doesn’t even matter what you’ve chosen to think and believe about yourself at all, good or bad. As you experience life from a new perspective—a new way of seeing, sharing, and being— you’ll notice that you’re not here just to get something for yourself out of life. What you’ve come here to receive is ultimately is your specialized gift that can be shared with the world. About the author: Charles Holt is a gifted Broadway actor and dynamic inspirational speaker who inspires audiences around the world with his message of healing, empowerment, and freedom. He has starred in shows such as The Lion King and addresses organizations around the world including TED talks. He is an accomplished vocalist and is the author of two books. Charles lives in Los Angeles. He will be presenting a workshop and concert at Conscious-Con about Finding Your Voice.

Steps to Becoming

Master of Time

by Christopher Bueker

I

magine yourself with enough time for friends, family, work, and play. Imagine feeling intentionally productive, while maintaining health and well-being. Imagine feeling like you are a master of time. I imagine this for myself on a daily basis. The intention of this article is to briefly introduce ideas associated with an effective time management system so that your imagination can become reality. As defined by Claessens, Roe, and colleagues in 2007, time management refers to “behaviors that aim at achieving an effective use of time, while performing goal-directed activities.” The academic research on this topic is underdeveloped. The information shared in this article in based on personal experience that produces results. Coupled with the practice of mindfulness, an effective time management system includes 5 steps that involve the person’s belief systems, his/her definite chief aim or life purpose, planning, doing, and reflection.

1. Examine your belief system

‟Any idea, plan, or purpose may be placed in the mind through repetition of thought.” ~ Napoleon Hill A person’s behaviors originate from his/her subconscious mind; and a person’s personal belief system is held in the subconscious mind. A person’s actions are filtered through the conscious mind. The belief systems a person holds in his/her subconscious mind are very powerful and significantly influence how a person sees the world. A person can only experience success by external measures when he/she maintains the belief that he/she is a successful person. The following includes steps on how to adopt a belief system that allows a person to manage his/her time and actions effectively.

• Read literature focused on happiness, success, prosperity, leadership, and wealth.

• Involve yourself with other people who are engaged in personal development.

• Practice the “As if” mentality. Behave as if what you are affirming is already manifested in your life.

10

Living W h o l e Journal

• Visualize yourself as productive, organized, well-rested, stress-free, and feeling happy and compassionate.

2. Define and clarify your life purpose

“The subconscious mind may be likened to a magnet, and when it has been vitalized and thoroughly saturated with any definite purpose it has a decided tendency to attract all that is necessary for the fulfillment of that purpose. Like attracts like.” ~Napoleon Hill Many people who report meaningful levels of happiness have linked their career with their life purpose. Many people who are successful believe that life has meaning and the other people who are successful seem to create meaning in their life.

3. Plan

Planning involves writing to do lists, prioritizing tasks, and scheduling them into your planner and/or calendar. Look at intentions and/or goals daily.

4. Do the work

When you have the momentum of the first three steps, doing the work becomes a whole lot easier.

5. Reflect on the effectiveness of your actions When you are producing reliable results consistently, you know you have imprinted a positive belief system into your subconscious mind. This is a brief overview of an effective time management system. The practice of mindfulness is also an integral part of any effective time management system.

About the author: Christopher Bueker is Career Coach with The Point, Arc of Northern Kentucky where he assists people with developmental disabilities gets jobs they enjoy in the community. Infertility Awareness

A

ccording to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services 10% of women struggle with getting pregnant or staying pregnant. That is 6.1 million women in the United States. Not many know that infertility is a lonely diagnosis. Usually, the infertile couple keeps the process to themselves for fear that they won’t be understood. I know, because I’m a survivor of infertility and I’ve heard every comment under the sun. I would like to make it easier for those who are coping with infertility, as well as for their family and friends who want to show their support. Here is a list of comments that are insensitive to say to the already emotionally fragile:

“You know IVF really works.” Really, because my doctor gave me an 8% chance of conception and delivery. And this would mean depleting my entire life savings. You could try saying, “Do you want to talk to my friend who had success through IVF?”

“Don’t stress. It will happen when it’s supposed to happen.” Stress isn’t an appropriate word to describe this torture. It’s more like having your heart stabbed every time you see a child or pregnant woman. It’s a constant reminder of failure. It’s better to say, “What can I do to help you during this challenging time?”

“You are so lucky you don’t have children.” “You know you can adopt.” Most women already know their options by the time 12 months have come and gone. Time seems to be the enemy. It would be better to say nothing about adoption. A hug is always nice or an offer to be available to talk if needed.

“You can have one of my children.” This may seem like a generous, or funny, offer but it down plays the joy of being a parent. You could say instead, “My daughter really looks up to you and it would be nice if you would spend some time with her.”

“Why do you do this to yourself?” Do what? Dream? Have hope? You could try saying, “How do you have the strength and courage to get through this nightmare?”

12

Living W h o l e Journal

I don’t feel lucky. All I ever wanted was to have children. Try saying, “I’m praying for you.” I’m writing this to help others know that they are not alone. If you would like some guidance through this difficult time, for yourself or a loved one, I would be happy to help. The first step is to reach out to someone who has already experienced this emotional journey, someone who can understand. About the author: Maureen Hollmeyer is a licensed social worker. I Choose

LOVE by Shawn Gallaway

s I was healing my first bout with depression I began exploring spirituality and the possibility that there was so much more to living than the traditional values I had been given growing up. The real student was ready and one of my greatest teachers came into my life and presented me with a choice. To love myself and heal, creating my life with lessons in love, or to remain stuck in fear creating more lessons in violence, struggle, hardship, internal conflict, disease, poverty, greed, and destruction? My choice was clear, Love! What was not clear was how the choice would present itself to me over and over again with each new Calling, each new experience, each new opportunity and in each new moment. I remember a time when I was working as a window washer, and one day on the job I just sat on the ground and started weeping. I could no longer deny my Soul that this kind of work was killing me. I was facing another choice. Do I release this job and follow my heart’s desire to do art for a living, knowing that somehow I will be provided for, or do I stay in grief, stuck in the security of knowing I have a paycheck every week at the expense of my Soul? In choosing Love I began my career as a professional

A

artist giving myself the gift of self-expression and allowing my Spirit to be nurtured as I moved out into the world in a new way. To this day I constantly have to ask myself what am I choosing, Love or Fear? In this moment what do I choose, Love or Fear? Right now, what do I choose, Love or Fear? As a world what are we choosing, Love or Fear? My greatest gift in life is free will, knowing I always have a choice. Sometimes my choices are made consciously; sometimes they are not. In becoming more aware of my Self, and the consequences of living in fear, I am clear about how I want to create my life. I Choose Love! Shawn will be opening Conscious-Con with his signature song I Choose Love.

The 118 Year-Old

Woman by Stowe Dailey and Karen Taylor Good

W

e (Karen and Stowe) are excited to bring a very close friend of ours to Conscious-Con, and we know you’ll want to meet her. She is—get this—118 years old! She’s had quite a life: four children, three husbands, two nose jobs, and one bout of near-fatal cancer. Yet, even at her advanced age she’s still following her heart and living out her dreams. Pretty impressive, eh? Ok… actually, we ARE the 118-year-old woman. Two women, five names, and 118 years between us. We have learned SO much about life in those many years—powerful lessons that we love to share wherever we go.

Karen: Our culture revolves around appearances. Am I “cool” enough? Young enough? Pretty enough? It starts early. I can still hear the schoolyard taunts, “Hey, Beak!” Embarrassed, I lost my spark, trying to disappear into the crowd. The last thing I wanted was to be noticed. Fortunately, I discovered my voice a few years later, which boosted my confidence. But the pain of being “imperfect” stayed with me, and I got that big nose chopped off soon after. My “imperfection” struck again, when I lost a potentially huge record deal in my early 40’s, because I “looked too old,” I endured a painful, expensive facelift, and began a 25-year deception of lying about my age. But living a lie is hard on the heart. These days, standing in my truth feels so much better. I’m in the Primetime of my Lifetime! And, I’ve learned

a valuable lesson: Your body is not your masterpiece—your life is. I’m working on loving my imperfect 65-year-old face while living out my passion— making beautiful music—and inspiring others along the way. Isn’t it about time that we all learn to love and honor ourselves… EXACTLY as we are?

Stowe: Like everyone, I’ve overcome my share of challenges. My mother died when I was three and my father put me into foster homes where I was emotionally and sexually abused. Later, I almost died from cancer. But while the outside world has thrown a lot at me, my biggest obstacles have come from within. So many of us let our fears dictate how we choose to live. We feel unworthy to even imagine the life of our dreams, believing that who we are is not enough. For years I felt that my gifts weren’t good enough, but all that changed five years ago when my stage 3 rectal cancer almost took me down. May - June 2015

I finally saw how precious my talents are. While recovering, I began to understand this: the world needs exactly what you and I have to offer. The freedom you feel when you’re in harmony with your true calling is exhilarating . . . a natural high. We are not born merely to survive. If you’re on this planet, you have a purpose—something only you can do—and it’s time to let go of the fear and just DO it.

About the authors: Stowe Dailey is a hit songwriter, best-selling author and recent cancer survivor. Karen Taylor Good is the Grammy-nominated songwriter of “How Can I Help You Say Goodbye.” Together, they are StoweGood. Recent presenters of a TEDx talk, they share their musical keynotes, workshops and concerts around the world. StoweGood will be performing and presenting a workshop at Conscious-Con.

omen fearful of radiation in mammograms, or women who are pregnant, nursing, have dense breasts, or have had implants or breast cancer, can now obtain thermograms as a compression and radiationfree adjunctive test to mammograms for breast cancer screening. Thermograms are FDA approved. Thermography uses a sensitive, infrared camera that creates thermal images of the body’s heat patterns; disease, inflammation and tumors increase blood flow in the body, which causes increased body temperature that can be seen on a thermographic scan. Thermography alerts a woman’s doctor to breast changes that can indicate early-stage breast disease, according to the American College of Clinical Thermography. Mammograms are considered standard care for breast cancer screening in women, but thermograms are considered a safe, effective adjunctive tool. Thermograms are images of the body’s heat patterns. Heat patterns on the images can detect physiologic changes that accompany breast pathology, whether it is cancer, fibrocystic breast disease, an infection or vascular disease. “Thermography can be helpful in the diagnosis of many potential diseases,” says Jacky Groenewegen, owner of Mindful Wellness. She is a certified thermographic technician and licensed massage therapist. “It’s perfect for women with dense breasts, implants or women who are nursing or pregnant, when mammograms are not a good option.” Dense breasts, which are more common in women under the age of 40, are composed of less fat and more connective tissue, which appears white on a mammogram. Cancer also appears white on a mammogram, so tumors are often hidden behind the dense tissues, according to Are You Dense, an advocacy group dedicated to informing the public about dense breast tissue and

About 40 percent of women in the U.S. have dense breasts, which increases breast cancer risk. If a thermogram is abnormal, a woman can work with her doctor to monitor her breast health and treatments, Groenewegen says. Thermograms are 97 percent accurate in identifying breast pathology in women, according to a 2008 clinical study at Cornell University. Mammograms are 78 percent accurate for women under 50 years old and 83 percent accurate for women older than 50, says the Susan G. Komen website. Neither test alone can be used to diagnose breast cancer in women; only a biopsy can determine the presence of cancer. 15-minute, FDA-approved thermograms are being offered at Mindful Wellness Medical Thermography in West Chester. Full-body thermograms are also available. Mindful Wellness Medical Thermography is located at 8859 CincinnatiDayton Road, Suite 007 in West Chester. It will have a booth at Conscious-Con in Cincinnati on May 16 and 17. Why We Don᾿t

Awaken by Jennifer Schuitemaker

H

ave you ever wondered why the thousands of self-help programs and spiritual teachings fail to get the desired results? Many of you likely already experience times when life feels magical. You have so much energy, you zip through your chores and nothing seems to bother you. When you are in this state, your senses are heightened and you are resonating with a powerful awareness or connectedness with Who You Are and Why You Are Here. Unfortunately, this awakened or connected state never seems to last very long. You might find yourself getting angry and impatient when you’re stuck in traffic, you lose it when your two-year-old finger paints the living room walls, and just as you’re in the midst of yet another diaper change for your newborn, your mother-in-law calls to say she’s stopping by in five minutes… What happened to all the good feelings? Why is it so difficult to stay awakened and connected? Is there a certain skill set, criteria or knowledge that you need to acquire? Or maybe there’s just something fundamentally wrong with you.

You Can’t Awaken If You’re Already Awake Albert Einstein said, “Problems cannot be solved with the same mindset that created them.” So what if I told you that you never had a problem to begin with—that you are already awakened or enlightened? Let me repeat that: You are already awakened. Just like you cannot be semi-pregnant you cannot be semi-awakened. There’s your first clue. You were either born divine of universal god stuff, or you were born flawed. It’s one or the other. “How could that be?” you may ask. “Something has to be wrong with me!” You will find this belief perpetuated by the same consciousness that offers us billions of solutions aimed at someone who has a problem. This is why most methods never work. They keep us on a perpetual cycle of self-improvement. This conviction that something is wrong with you is part of a powerful subjective belief system that you acquired from your parents and authority figures. All your life you have been taught that if you continue to subscribe to this system, you will be protected and accepted by these members of your society. The inculcation or programming of these beliefs is so strong, most of us never stop to question them. Are they really true? Can we actually validate them?

18

Living W h o l e Journal

We Are Our Own Worst Enemies...Or Are We? Over the last few centuries we have been led to believe that an intrinsic part of us is hindering our own progress. It is the reason why we are unable to awaken. We have been taught that our physical essence, which includes our bodies and our physical world, was chosen as the part of us we must transcend, denounce and vilify if we seek to become enlightened or achieve permanent awakening. Since we are by nature physical creatures and cannot escape this dilemma, how could we help but feel fractured and impaired from the start? Can you imagine what this has done to our collective psyche as this belief has been passed down from generation to the next? What has this cost us as a species and a society, which continually seeks out solutions to its so-called ‘brokenness’?

The Force of Life Didn’t Get It Wrong When we judge our physical arena and the wondrous pleasures and bounty of it all as inferior, we assume that the Force of Life is prone to creating accidents and engaging in futile enterprises that lead to dead ends. Think about it: why would an all-creative, all-purposeful, all-expansive and all-powerful Force of Life create an imperfect being? How can you try to become Whole when you believe wholeheartedly that you are fragmented from a huge part of Who You Are? Continuing to believe that our physicality is wrong assumes something is wrong with creation itself. You cannot become a better higher version of yourself by spending your life energy escaping yourself. Wholeness is integration, not fragmentation. For the path to true Unity, Freedom and Release lies with Acceptance. A place where there was nothing to condemn or judge. A place where everything simply IS. Our refusal to acknowledge our original Wholeness may be the greatest impediment to the progress of our species to finally re-awaken. There was never anything wrong with you. There was never anything to fix because you were never broken. Stop healing all the problems you never had in the first place. Free yourself from beliefs that hold you back from experiencing you and your world in a revolutionary new way, and awaken to the true essence of yourself as Whole Being. Are You Ready?

Flower Medicine Herbs ‘n Such, by Mimi Tagher

he beautiful colors of May flowers can brighten anyone’s day, boost morale and improve mood. But did you know that many flowers also affect us on a physical level? Yes, many flowers are more than just a beautiful face, they have the power to heal! As botanicals, many flowers possess phytochemicals that produce pharmacological effects on the body ranging from anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial to anti-viral and anti-oxidant. You can benefit by making them a part of your daily health routine. Although edible flowers have become common garnishes in restaurants, it is important to know what you are ingesting. Not all flowers are edible, and only parts of others are safe. The most common, and safest edible flowers are nasturtium, pansy, calendula, chive, sage, and rose. But be careful and make sure they are grown organically, i.e. without chemicals or pesticides. Also, the pollen of some flowers is highly allergenic and may cause reactions in sensitive individuals... so know what to avoid. Flowers to stay away from include: azalea, crocus, daffodil, foxglove, oleander, rhododendron, lily of the valley, and wisteria. Make sure to do your research. You can even grow your own to feel safest. The list below is a safe and simple starter garden for those interested in making their meals more beautiful and more healthy.

T

Nasturtiums - may be vivid yellow, orange or red. Both the leaves and the flowers have a peppery flavor that adds zest to any dish. Nasturtium leaves can be added to salads and sandwich spreads. Chop some up and add it to egg or potato salad. They are best eaten uncooked. They are a good plant to add to any flower bed because they have a natural ability to keep bugs away from both themselves and other plants. Medicinally, the plant is antimicrobial, so it is good to eat this herb for infections. It is useful for respiratory infections like bronchitis, flu and colds, and it is also helpful for reproductive infections. It can help clear mucous from the throat and lungs. Pansy - comes in all colors of the rainbow. The plant has been revered for its beauty and medicinal properties since ancient times. Ointments and skin creams made with pansy as an ingredient have anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. Pansy is therefore used to treat skin ailments such as psoriasis, acne, eczema, itching, impetigo, and cradle cap. Drinking pansy tea 20

Living W h o l e Journal

or using it as a poultice on the skin is effective as well. Pansy can strengthen contractions of the uterus and induce labor. The antitussive properties of the pansy plant lend it to being used to treat respiratory conditions such as asthma, whooping could, and bronchitis. It also soothes inflammations and irritations in the mucus membranes of the throat and loosens and eliminates phlegm. You can gargle or drink tea made with dried pansy flowers and leaves steeped in hot water. Add honey or lemon juice to taste.

Calendula - a member of the daisy family (known as pot marigold), comes in many colors. The flowers contain glycosides, which have been shown to have anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, and anti-carcinogenic properties. Preparations made from these flowers can be used to treat minor wounds, acne and other skin conditions. The plants also have antispasmodic effects, so taking a tea or extract made from the flowers can be taken internally to help ease cramps. Rose - comes in many colors. The taste is sweet. The stronger the aromatic fragrance, the stronger the flavor. Be sure to remove the bitter white portion of the petals. Roses come in countless varieties. All are edible but the wild varieties are preferred for use in herbal medicine. Both cultivated and wild roses are used in cooking to make jellies, jams, and garnishes. The petals are often used in herbal medicine, the essential oil is used in massage and aromatherapy, and the seed pods (hips) are an excellent source of vitamin C. Rose petals are made into tea for the treatment of stress, depression, colds and coughs, digestive ailments, swollen eyes, puffiness, broken capillaries, menopausal symptoms, reduced libido, and eating disorders. The tea can be taken as a drink, used as a gargle, or applied as a wash. Rose oil is used externally to help regenerate skin, to promote feelings of well-being, and to purify the system. The scent of rose oil is very soothing for the nervous system. It is a gentle sedative and can help stop panic attacks. About the author: Mimi Tagher, LAc, LMT is nationally board certified in acupuncture, Chinese herbology and Oriental Medicine. She practices at Synergy Holistic Health Center in Florence, Ky., and in Blue Ash. 859.525.5000, www.synergyholistichealth.com

The

Language of

Success Intuitive Insights, by Francine Haydon and Patricia Garry

L

anguage is a very powerful tool. The right choice of words can make a huge difference in whether the outcome is successful or not. Your words paint pictures and give them life. Your words illustrate the point you are trying to get across to others and ultimately can directly influence how the message is received. Different words have different nuances or can mean something slightly different in other cultures. Choose carefully. Even the way you say the words – loudly, softly, slowly or quickly - can impact how the ideas are received or the response the person is already formulating in his/her mind. Think of that seemingly innocuous email you recently sent to a friend or co-worker. To you, the email merely stated the current facts and outlined what needed to be done next. However, the person who received the email may have been in a bad or defensive mood, misinterpreted your words and ended up feeling attacked - not your intended result at all. It is important to think of and weigh the impact of your chosen words – whether written or spoken – and your desired intent. We often talk about the power of positive thinking. Using positive words is equally or even more important. What you say and how you say it will determine if you get the positive outcome you want. We call this the “language of success” – learning how to select the right words and saying them so that your message is heard in the way you intend. And, of course, your words influence you, as well. An affirmation is words you choose to change your direction, move yourself on to a new path. These words are particularly useful when you find yourself criticizing your own wonderful life, muttering about procrastination or lack of self control. That self-criticism also proves the power of words, doesn’t it? You

can guarantee that everything you try to do after a bout of selfloathing will make you feel heavier and slower. So what kind of success do you want? Find the words to express that, and stop listening to the negativity you’ve been pouring on your own head. (To find out how often you do that, just spend a couple of hours putting a check on a piece of paper each time you think / say self-critical words.) To make the turn into feeling like a better mom – point out to yourself the times you praise your kids for their efforts, the thank yous they hear from you each day, the ways you help them expand their horizons. ‘I love supporting my kids in their growth and joy each day.’ That affirmation, said over and over, will re-program you into more joy as well. Gratitude is one of the best antidotes to self-criticism – and a great path toward the success you want in all phases of your life. ‘I love and enjoy my life, and am so grateful for all that I have.’ Repeat that as needed, and make a mark in your calendar for 30 days after you begin. You’ll find you’ve really turned the corner, and that success is at hand! BREATHE MORE LIFE INTO YOUR BODY noring and sleep apnea lead to low oxygen levels in the body. In turn, this leads to physical problems people don’t usually associate with sleep issues. They affect your life at home, on the job, and your relationships. Dr. Bosma helps patients who snore through a unique system of evaluation and treatment called Oral Systemic Balance. Breathe more life into your body! Call us for information or to schedule your sleep evaluation.
