MY GUIDE, MY CAPTAIN

Author: Gonzalo Moure From the reader report by:Richard Mansell

Mi Lazarilla, Mi Capitán is sensitively written, and attempts to give an insight into what an everyday action might be like for a visually impaired child (and father), and as such encourages empathy – this is a text that could easily be used to start discussion in the primary school classroom. Indeed, the story’s basis of an everyday routine – getting ready for school, going to school, not wanting to say goodbye – is something that helps give any exploration of empathy a strong basis. The illustrations are beautiful, and give a lot for readers to explore and observe – and imagine.

Author’s biography: Gonzalo Moure is a journalist and author. He has been awarded several of the major prizes in the field of Children’s and Young Adult literature. His writing stands out for its social commitment: the Saharui people, the Bubisher “book-busses”, children’s rights, equality, and the environment. He combines literary creativity with visits to educational centres, libraries, and book clubs where he speaks about his work. María Girón studied Fine Arts at the University of Barcelona and completed her training in Bologna and Seville, later returning to Barcelona where she specialised in illustration at the Escuela Llotja. She has illustrated numerous books that have been translated to various languages. In 2020 she was selected to participate in a collective exhibition celebrating Gianni Rodari by the Bologna International Children’s Book Fair. www.gonzalomouretrenor.es | www.mariagiron.com Synopsis: Emotion and beauty, the profound love between a father and a daughter, and the ability to see beyond the visual limitations are all part of this book. The characters in this book demonstrate that living in darkness, or having a reduced field of vision don’t have to stop you leading a full life: transforming the trip to school into an adventure where the city becomes a jungle full of scary creatures and fascinating sounds. My Guide, My Captain portrays the tenderness and admiration of a little girl for her father because they need each other to walk safely through an easier and more beautiful world. This text, combining dialogue with an introspective narrative, takes place in urban surroundings colonised by the wild animals created by María Girón. These creatures, both amusing and affectionate, inhabit the imagination of the book’s main character and are the most adorable travelling companions.
