5 Children Safe Ways

To Keep Your

This Summer By Kristy Wyatt

Pools, Rivers, Streams and Water Parks

The number one way to reduce the risk of drowning and swimming-related injuries is to never, ever leave your child unattended. Phone calls are a major distraction for many parents, so make sure your cell phone is on silent or vibrate so you can concentrate fully on your child. To prevent unattended children from accessing the pool, home pools should have a sturdy fence that encloses the area with a single, lockable entrance. This might be a good time to sign your kids up for a swimming class to help prepare them for the summer fun.

The Beach You should always practice sun safety whenever your child is outdoors. First, use lots of sunscreen! A child’s skin can burn much easier than an adult’s, so reapplication is important. Infants should be kept completely out of the sun. Also, it’s a good idea to put sunglasses on them (if they will keep them on!). Good hydration is another important tool for beach safety. Give your little one plenty of fluids like water or pure fruit juices.

Playgrounds

Bikes

Kids love going to playgrounds during the hot summer months to play with friends, expend some energy and enjoy the freedom of the outdoors. Make sure the playground you choose has soft, safe surfaces beneath the equipment. Cement or concrete flooring can cause extreme head injuries and broken bones.

Biking-related injuries are much more prevalent in the summer months than in winter, spring or fall. To protect your child from bike injuries, make sure they’re wearing a helmet. A helmet is one of the most effective ways to prevent head injuries from falls; studies have shown that helmets can reduce head injuries by 85 percent.

The upcoming summer months mean family vacations, school-free days of playing outside and catching fireflies in the warm twilight. They also mean injuries, accidents and things that we as parents hope to protect our children from. Here are seven easy ways to keep your children safe during these upcoming summer days, no matter where your adventures may take you.

Malls Your older children – teens and “tweens” – will probably be going to the local mall a lot more during the summer months. Make sure they charge their cell phones before leaving the house so that they can reach you if needed. Equally as important, make sure your phone is charged and near you as well! Of course, remind them not to leave the mall and to stay with their friends to protect them from the dangers of being alone in a busy, populated area.

Rebecca Interview by Lauren Douglass

Heflin

The weather isn’t the only thing that’s heating up this summer. Gainesville’s own Rebecca Heflin is here to tell us about her new romance novel “Rescuing Lacey,” her lawyer-by-day, writer-by-night experiences, and the inspiring moments that brought move more quickly from an idea it all together. to the actual writing, which saves

Tell me about your first novel, “The Promise of Change.”

“The Promise of Change” is set primarily in England and tells the story about Sarah Edwards, a thirty-something divorcee going through a mid-life crisis of sorts. A twoweek trip to England seems the perfect pick-me-up for this Anglophile and Austenite. Enter Alex Fraser, a.k.a. the Earl of Rutherford, who, although a member of the lucky sperm club, prefers to be known for what he’s accomplished rather than a fate of birth. He’s always preferred casual flings with beautiful women who have no illusions of marriage. That is until he literally bumps into Sarah in an Oxford pub. Despite an idyllic week together, Sarah gets cold feet and returns to the States, determined to come back down to reality. A year later, the realization of Sarah’s life-long dream unexpectedly brings Alex back into her life, in what she believes is an ironic twist of fate.

What inspired you to write it? I was going through my own mid-life crisis and determined that what I really needed was a creative outlet. The outlet was writing. 6

Flourish Magazine | June/2013

time and effort in the long run.

About the same time, I took a trip to Oxford, England, for a week-long adult learning course at Christ Church College, Oxford University. That experience provided inspiration for Sarah’s story.

Why should people read “Rescuing Lacey” aside from other romance novels? Most romance novels I read are set in Small Town, U.S.A. – not that there’s anything wrong with that. I love small town settings, but if you like exotic locations, “Rescuing Lacey” is the book for you. Set in the steamy rainforests of Costa Rica, the climate isn’t the only thing that’s hot.

What did you learn after writing “The Promise of Change” that made “Rescuing Lacey” even better? I learned a great deal between writing my debut novel and writing my second novel. First, I learned more about pacing. “Rescuing Lacey” is faster paced than “Promise,” with quick scenes and more dialogue, giving it a more adventurous feel. I also learned how to

What is your inspiration for your characters? Do you model your characters after people you know in real life? Inspiration for my characters comes from many places. Most people who know me will say that Sarah’s story is somewhat autobiographical (except for the divorcee part – I’m happily married). Obviously, I felt comfortable with Sarah since she’s so much like me, and I had an easier time writing her. Lacey, on the other hand, is not modeled after anyone. Her rough-and-tumble personality is the complete opposite of me, which made her a blast to write.

Why romance? With romance you’re guaranteed a happy ending, and who doesn’t love that?

I’ve heard writers sometimes have difficulty letting their works go or knowing when they are “finished.” Was it difficult to let your first novel go? I think the hardest thing I’d done in many years was letting someone read my manuscript. It’s like standing naked on a street corner – all your flaws, your self-consciousness and your fears

“I don’t regret the things I’ve done, I regret the things I didn’t do when I had the chance.” Unknown

are open for criticism. Once I got past it with the first novel, it became much easier with subsequent works.

once you’re published, the hard work begins. Marketing via my website, my blog, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, guest blogging, book signings, etc., takes a lot of time and energy. It’s not like the days of traditional publishing, where you handed off your manuscript and the publisher took it from there. Authors today are expected to be visible and accessible. While it’s hard work, it’s also very gratifying to get an email, tweet or Facebook post from a reader who really enjoyed my books.

Tell me about the publishing process. Did you go through an agent? Was it difficult? Publishing is not easy these days. There’s a lot of competition, especially in the romance genre. I sent out query letters to every agent and publisher that was accepting submissions in my genre. The first rejection was like a knife to the heart, but after you get a few under your belt, you build thicker skin. I received some requests for partial manuscripts, a couple for full manuscripts, but then nothing, until September 21, 2011 when Soul Mate Publishing let me know they wanted “The Promise of Change.” Aside from the day I’d learned I’d passed the Florida Bar, I can’t remember a day when I felt like I could fly.

What’s the best thing about writing in Gainesville? Hmm. Writing is such a portable task. It can almost be done wherever I have a laptop or a pen and notebook. But Gainesville does offer lots of nice places to write, from beautiful parks, Lake Alice on the UF Campus, the campus libraries, and cafes and coffee houses.

Overall, is the experience of writing and being published what you expected?

What is something you really enjoy about Gainesville? I think more than anything, it’s the sense of community I find here in Gainesville. I grew up in Jacksonville and lived there most of

Yes and no. The knowledge that you’re a published writer is still exciting. But really,

my adult life, but Gainesville is home. I have terrific friends, neighbors and coworkers. Everyone here has embraced our foundation and its mission, and supported my writing. I can’t imagine living anywhere else.

Any advice for those looking for publication? Write, write, write. After that, read, read, read. The more you write, the more you polish your writing. Read books in the genre you’re pursuing. Read books about writing. Take workshops. Join local writing groups in your community, and join the national organization for your chosen genre. Once you have something polished to a brilliant shine, submit it to writing contests and apply the feedback you receive to make your manuscript shine even more. Then suck it up and send it to agents and editors who are looking for new material. You never know until you try.

Where can we find your books? My books are available through Amazon and Barnes & Noble’s websites in both e-book and paperback.

10 Steps

Journey to Point X

By John Vento

As a result of the 2008 economic meltdown, it became stunningly obvious that many Americans had not managed their finances well. What we learned as the economy slipped into a Great Recession was that many people lived paycheck to paycheck. As a financial advisor, I say it’s time for Americans to get their financial houses in order. Everyone should make reaching financial independence – or their Point X, as I call it – a top priority.

to get you and your Finances where you want to go

Financial independence is the point at which you stop working for your money and your money starts working for you. Here are 10 steps to help get you there: 2) Understand taxes

The average American family pays more than one-third of its income in federal, state and local income taxes. Taxes are our biggest personal expense, by far. In order to reach Point X, it is imperative that you understand As a CPA and CFP® with decades of experience, the basics of our tax system. Tax laws are I know exactly what it takes to sustain and build incredibly complicated, but you should have wealth. My new book, “Financial Independence enough basic knowledge about taxes and (Getting to Point X): An Advisor’s Guide to the tax system to ask the right questions and Comprehensive Wealth Management,” is a find the appropriate help to suit your own complete resource for anyone concerned with unique financial and tax needs. building wealth and financial security in today’s no-guarantee financial environment. The 3) Determine your following are 10 wealth management issues financial position covered in my book: Determining your financial position does not mean simply knowing your annual salary or identifying how much you take 1) Live within your means home in every paycheck. You must have “Living within your means” is living on less a precise understanding of your financial than your take-home salary and any other assets, liabilities and net worth by preparing resources you receive. It means not only a Statement of Financial Position. Only then save money and make payments into your personal savings. Ideally, that payment should can you realistically budget for the future – and of course, reach Point X. be 10 percent or more of your gross pay. 8

4) Manage debt For many people, debt is a scary concept, although it need not be. The fact is there is good debt and there is bad debt. Understanding the difference between bad debt and good debt is imperative to becoming financially literate and financially independent. When you do not use debt properly, that can lead to significant financial hardship and can prevent you from ever becoming financially independent. However, when you use debt to leverage yourself in the pursuit of accumulating wealth, it can be a very powerful tool.

5) Insure your health and life Even a sound, carefully planned investment strategy can fall apart if you have not prepared properly for unforeseen problems. Health insurance and life insurance help protect you and your family from the unexpected. Your particular situation will determine what type of insurance you need, what kind of policy or policies will work best for you and the amount of coverage you should carry.

“In order to succeed, your desire for success should be greater than your fear of failure.” Bill Cosby

6) Protect your property with insurance Protecting your property by implementing the proper risk management strategies is critical to achieving and maintaining your financial independence. The three major personal property risk management issues include homeowner’s insurance, automobile insurance and umbrella liability insurance. You should consult with your property liability insurance agent or broker to fully evaluate your needs so that you can determine proper coverage to meet those needs.

7) Pay for college If you are like most parents, one of your biggest concerns is, “How am I going to pay for my children’s education when the time comes to send them off to college?” Be open with your children about financial decisions and what consequences these decisions will have on the family’s future. Take advantage of college savings programs such as Internal Revenue Code Section 529 plans, Coverdell Education Savings Accounts, savings bonds and financial aid, as well as education tax deductions and credits. Understanding how scholarships, government grants, and student loans can help is essential.

8) Plan for retirement Everyone should be planning financially for retirement, regardless of how old or young they are. Remember, one of the most valuable investment assets you have is time; the more years you save the greater your chance of financial success. By far the easiest way to do this is by contributing to your employer’s retirement plan, or if that is not available, to an individual retirement account (IRA).

9) Manage your investments The rewards of proper investing can be very generous when investors adopt an investment discipline that allows them to purchase quality investments and then allows those investments to take their course. It is critically important that you select an investment model that you are willing to stay with, even in the worst of markets. The appropriate investment plan for you should be the one that provides you with the highest potential rate of return in the long run that is within your risk tolerance.

10) Preserve your estate If you do not take the necessary steps to preserve your estate, unintended beneficiaries may take a significant amount of your estate instead. Estate planning, which I should stress is not just for the wealthy, can give you peace of mind by assuring your family’s financial security will continue even after your death. It can significantly reduce estate taxes, administrative costs and assure that your loved ones will be taken care of.

Financial independence – the point at which we can stop working for our money and our money starts working for us – or Point X, as I call it in my book, is the financial ideal that we all seek. With the right plan and a commitment to making the necessary life changes, anyone can reach their Point X – but you have to be dedicated to making the lifestyle changes and taking the necessary steps to achieve financial security. Teens Urged to

Do Hard Things Interview by Lauren Douglass

So tell me about “Do Hard Things.” Why should someone pick it up? This book is a wake-up call to a generation plagued by apathy. It’s a challenge for young people to rebel against low expectations and take that first step towards a life that counts. We recommend “Do Hard Things” to every young person and everyone who works with young people. Our generation is being underestimated—badly, and with devastating consequences. This book is the antidote.

Twin brothers Alex and Brett have something to celebrate – the five year anniversary of their book “Do Hard Things,” and its empowerment of teenagers everywhere. Here, the brothers discuss the tragedy of complacent teens and remind us that every young person has the power any of the to make a difference. responsibilities or opportunities that ought to come with it. Entire industries have emerged to entertain and occupy this new age group — and those industries have huge financial incentives to perpetuate the myth of adolescence.

Concerning the “5th Anniversary Edition: Do Hard Things,” what are you most excited about?

What’s the biggest piece of advice you have for teenagers who want to make a difference?

One new feature we’re especially excited about is a list of a hundred things young people have been inspired to do after reading “Do Hard Things,” from making care packages for members of the military, to starting a non-profit organization, to training for and running a marathon. The list is a gold mine for practical application and provides a tangible glimpse of what young people are truly able to accomplish.

Start where you are. Don’t leave the problems in your school and your community to the grownups with the official titles and the big budgets. Your concern and small steps of initiative can draw attention and resources to problems that have long been ignored. Bring injustice to light. Help those in need. Reach out to the marginalized and hurting. Start that business or non-profit organization. Be the change you want to see in your part of the world.

Why do you think our culture doesn’t expect much of young people? Prior to the early 1900s, we thought of people in just two categories of age: children and adults. The word “teenager” didn’t even appear in print until Reader’s Digest published it in 1941. This new concept has had terrible consequences. Teenagers are no longer children but are not expected to act like adults. They have the desires and capabilities of an adult, without 10 Flourish Magazine | June/2013

Your book encouraged teens to raise $11,000 to bring the Gospel and clean water to the people of Sudan. Tell us about that success. That campaign actually went on to raise $37,000 and installed four large wells in the Darfur region of western Sudan. It all started when a 16-year-old named Joshua Guthrie read “Do Hard Things” and got a vision for rallying his generation around the urgent need for clean water in Africa and around the

world. The money was raised almost entirely by teenagers and the wells that were built are now providing clean water to tens-ofthousands of people, preventing countless deaths from water-related diseases, and freeing up thousands of women and children from the long daily walks to the old, contaminated drinking holes.

You don’t just want young people to be individual exceptions; your aim is to create a counterculture. What will it take to accomplish this? We’ve found many young people are already longing for a better way to live the teen years. They need to know an alternative exists and they are not alone in pursuing it. That is what we have tried to provide through “Do Hard Things” and our website, www.TheRebelution.com.

What is the biggest message you’d like to send to teens? Don’t wait. Your life has already started. The teen years are not a vacation from responsibility. They are the launching pad of life. They are the training ground for future leaders who dare to be responsible now.

Don’t be afraid to stand for what you believe in, even if that means standing alone. Unknown

Keeping kids motivated to practice their reading during the long summer days is a difficult goal. Since summer is a time for kids to escape the structured school environment, parents need to make reading fun, casual and interesting. Here are a few great ideas that will encourage your child to enjoy reading this summer.

Summer

Reading

Dinner…and a book?

Instead of watching TV after dinner, make a habit of reading a book. Have your child pick out the book they’d like to read before dinner so that they know as soon as the meal is finished, it’s reading time. If it’s a chapter book, discuss it at dinner each night. Who is their favorite character? What do they think will happen next?

Tips for Kids dentist’s office, or relaxing after work. Your children will watch you, and they’ll be more likely to pick up a book as well.

and Parents

The age-old art of letter writing.

Make it a (reading) date.

Role play with your books.

Kids love spending one-on-one time with Mom and Dad. Set aside 30 minutes a few days a week when each sibling has the chance to read a new book with you. On the weekends, plan “reading time,” where everyone — including Mom — quietly reads together before starting the activities for the day. Then, discuss the books as a family.

Enacting scenes from a favorite book or visiting a place that relates to the story, characters or plot will improve your child’s reading comprehension. Plus, they’ll love participating in learning exercises, which will seem like playtime to them.

Encourage your kids to write letters to close school friends during the summer months. Not only does this allow them to keep in touch with their buddies, but it also encourages them to practice their writing and comprehension skills. Use postcards, traditional paper and envelopes, or e-mail.

Be a borrower of books.

Switch up the scene.

Many young children love going to the library and picking out their own books. You can take it a step further by getting them involved in library activities such as reading clubs or story-time to get your child interested in books and reading.

Have your child read aloud somewhere other than their room or the living room. Go outside on the front porch, to the park or to the beach. It will keep reading interesting, fresh and stimulating.

Lend an ear, or two.

Keeps children reading! This old saying states that a house with a library “has a soul.” It also makes books more readily available to kids. Don’t keep your child’s favorite books in their room on a bookshelf. Instead, place them on the living room coffee table, near the kitchen table and even on the front porch.

Surprise with a subscription. Give your child a subscription to a learning magazine, such as Kids Discover, Highlights, Boys’ Life, Ranger Rick Jr., National Geographic Little Kids, Young Rider, Zoobooks or Odyssey. Not only will your child learn new things, but they’ll be able to practice their reading, too.

Monkey see, monkey do. This old saying definitely applies to reading. Set an example for your child by reading whenever you have a chance, whether waiting on kids in the carpool, at the 12 Flourish Magazine | June/2013

Audiobooks are a great option for summer vacations, especially if you’re going on a road trip or visiting family with a long commute. Choose a book that appeals to everyone in the family, such as classics like “A Wrinkle in Time,” “Charlotte’s Web” or “Peter Pan.”

Getting Ahead:

Who Should

Lean In or

Lean Back By Kelly Herman

It’s no secret that women in the workplace rarely reach the top of the ladder. There are fewer women than men in leadership positions, which COO of Facebook Sheryl Sandberg and James Allworth, coauthor of “How Will You Measure Your Life?” hope to change. In the new book “Lean In,” Sandberg explains why women are failing to be as successful as men in the same careers. We caught up with Allworth to discuss “Lean In” and give a few ideas on how women and men can either lean in or lean back to move forward in their jobs and in life. Sitting at the Desk In bigwig meetings, Sandberg says that women tend to be wallflowers instead of active members in a discussion. “No one gets to the corner office by sitting on the side and not at the table.” For example, after a talk one year, Sandberg took questions from the audience. When she told the audience she would only take two more questions, all of the women put their hands down and the men kept theirs up. In this case: Women should lean in. This isn’t the ‘50s anymore when women are hardly seen and heard even less. If you don’t take every chance you can get to keep your hand up or take a seat at the desk, you lose the opportunity to be heard and get ahead.

Self-Confidence “Lean In” discusses one study on students in a surgery rotation. When asked to evaluate their own performance, female students underrated themselves and male students overrated themselves. Sandberg asserts that women are lacking in the kind of confidence that is getting men ahead. Allworth expresses a different view: “’Lean In’ implies the ones at fault here are the women for not being confident enough in themselves, and they should ‘fake it until 14 Flourish Magazine | June/2013

they make it.’ The problem is that ‘Lean In’ doesn’t examine the alternative hypothesis, which seems pretty obvious to me: it wasn’t the women who were lacking confidence, but it was the men who were too confident. The men who were more confident in their ability were the ones less likely to do the hard work required to prepare for their surgery rotation.” In this case: Men should lean back. Confidence is key, but overconfidence that results in underperformance can lead to problems. Doubt can be useful to see where problems may lie ahead, so take a page from the women’s books and don’t get too big for your pants; someone may not always be there to help you hold them up.

Equal Partnership When male and female parents are both working full time, studies show that instead of dividing the time equally, women usually do double the housework and triple the amount of childcare that the man does. Sandberg and Allworth mainly agree on this point.

In this case: Women should lean in and men should lean back. Women place so much emphasis on starting or maintaining families that they tend to hold back in their careers, Sandberg says, which keeps them from getting back to work when they do finally have kids. If you love what you do, push forward. There is no reason mothers should invest more time in their children than fathers, or less time in their work. Allworth also explains that men leaning so far into work and not taking part in the rest of life can be detrimental. A way of fixing this is one of allocation. “A strategy is the sum of all the ways we allocate our resources — where we spend our time and money and effort. We can say we have a strategy for having a great relationship with our friends and family, but if we end up dedicating all our time to work, then our strategy will turn out very different from what we say it is.”

“Forget all the reasons it won’t work and believe the one reason that it will.” Unknown

Perk: It has been shown that households who have equal earning and equal responsibilities have half the divorce rate, as well as better intimate lives.

Success versus Likability Sandberg talks about the success story of a woman named Heidi, and how she became extremely successful in her career through networking and contacts. A professor gave her success story to their class, with one change: Heidi’s name was changed to Howard in half of the stories. From the students’ perspective, Howard was seen as a nice, friendly, hard-working guy who everyone wanted to hang out with. Heidi was seen as much less likable, even though the success was hers. This is a tough one, because as of yet, there aren’t any solutions we can offer the present generation. Both authors agree that boys and girls are raised to think differently about the sexes. While “boys will be boys” and are expected to be “leaders,” girls have to “act like ladies” and are called “bossy” when they don’t follow along in a group. This mindset is taught early on. It’s not until

children are equally allowed to take the lead, without usurping responsibility or constructive feedback, that we can start to change how we perceive strong women alongside strong men. In this case: Everyone should lean in to emboldening their children to play up their strengths, instead of encouraging them to emulate past ideals. Lots of pressure is put on boys to be successful and on women to merely be liked. As Allworth puts it, “This idea that men behave in a way that is the gold standard for success is a misplaced one … just being aware of this issue is a big step in the right direction.”

Summer Slide

School’s out! What steps are you taking to ensure that your child avoids the Summer Slide during their summer break? Here are a few simple tips to ensure that your child has a memorable summer full of adventures and experiences that keep them on track with their skills for the next school year. Are you using Pinterest for your child’s Education? With most children away from school for more than two months, research shows that there is a high chance for some loss of skills during their summer. There are programs available to enroll your child at varying costs in the community. However, you might be surprised with how much you can do right from your own home with Pinterest as your resource! 16 Flourish Magazine | June/2013

Teachers, kid bloggers, homeschoolers, and parents from all over the world are using Pinterest to save resourceful information that they have found on the internet to share with you. Teachers share their ideas online with various websites. However, if you’re short on time you don’t want to jump from site to site searching for what you think your child might need, I suggest for you to take advantage of this

unique resource. By utilizing Pinterest, you will find the best of the best that someone has pinned, or “bookmarked,” to keep as a tool for future use and for others to discover. It’s like opening up your child’s teachers’ filing cabinets during the summer and using the best content from within.

Fun Pinterest Fact: Did you know The Educators’ Spin On It has over 1.5 million followers on Pinterest? The first step is to read and possibly print what Core Standards your child was expected to achieve in the grade they just completed. Is there something you wished they had spent more time learning? Then look at the Core Standards for the next grade level and find areas of focus that interest your child. After reading both grade

level standards, is there an area that they need improvement based on their performance in the school year and your own observation? Once you have established a few things to work on it’s time to do a search on Pinterest and see what shows up for those topics.

What Topics Should You Search for on Pinterest for Summer Learning? • Reading – You can find Pinterest boards that focus on a variety of language skills including building comprehension skills, Sight words, Fluency, Phonemic Awareness, Letter Recognition, Strategies for Struggling Readers to even Top Rated Books. • Writing – Discover story writing prompts, journal ideas, writing processes, handwriting practice and more. • Math – Ready to take math in a new direction? You can find fun games to engage your child in learning math over the summer as well as free printables to practice with those math facts! • Science – Pinterest is an avenue for finding at-home experiments that are budget friendly as well as videos of experiments that have been shared. You could create a mini science camp right in your own kitchen. • Global Learning – Take advantage of your

summer travel and do a little research to learn fun facts about a specific location. Create a journey around the world by learning in your own home with the many great World Culture boards.

tricky enough, you can have them learning and playing at the same time and avoid the Summer Slide! There are tons of fun and creative ideas online and pinned onto boards on Pinterest.

• Arts & Crafts – Since there’s not as much time for the arts in most school settings, take advantage of the summer to explore the arts with your child. Using Children’s Art boards, you can explore artists and styles, then combine with frequent local museum visits and a few supplies. You have the tools to make your own Art Summer Camp!

Using Pinterest can make your child’s summer fun (and secretly productive) to avoid the Summer Slide. By implementing a few of these subject areas listed, you can have your own summer camp right in your own backyard, all inspired by Pinterest!

• Cooking, Sewing, Gardening, Photography, Technology – You name it, you can find it on Pinterest. Just take a moment to type in “with kids” at the end and a variety of amazing ideas will show up! • Play – Play is so important in a child’s life and really the goal of summertime with our youngest learners. Why

You Should Run a Running can be a refreshing way to recharge and live strong. It can also be terribly boring. It’s no wonder that many resolutions to tie up those sneakers and cover some miles often fall flat; running for the sake of running takes extreme motivation, a superstar playlist and a significant amount of willpower. By the time you’ve listened to “Suit & Tie” for the fourth time on loop, you’re already sick of it, and it’s only been 12 minutes.

18 Flourish Magazine | June/2013

Running with purpose, however, changes the game. Signing up for a 5k is like signing up for instant motivation; it gives you a goal. Suddenly, you’re morning jog isn’t filled with thoughts of what’s for breakfast and how much your feet hurt. Instead, you’re imagining yourself in the race, pushing through to the finish. When a 5k is looming in your future, you can’t call it quits after nine minutes. You have another 21 to go. For some, running is a quiet, personal time. However, if you’re looking for a little company, signing up for a 5k is an amazing way to meet new people and to connect with old friends. Recruit your girls to join you and then schedule your jogs together. You’ll find the time flies when you’re gossiping about last night’s episode of Game of Thrones (OK, maybe that’s just me),

5K sharing funny memories and spending time together. As far as making new friends, it’s hard not to! You have at least one thing in common with everyone at the event; it’s the perfect recipe for great new friendships. If for no other reason, run a 5k for the cause. The proceeds of your entry fee are likely benefiting a charitable organization, so not only can you feel proud of your personal accomplishment, but you can feel great that you’re giving back, too. Whether it’s a cause you care deeply about or one you’re just learning of, the feeling of camaraderie you’ll get while running by others for a single purpose is hard to beat. It doesn’t matter if you’re a seasoned runner or if you’ve never owned a pair of tennis shoes in your life. Get up, get pumped and run a 5k.

We can do it!

New Car Neg ot ia t

ns io

Come Prepared It’s something we’ve been taught since our earliest days: if you come prepared, you’ll always be ahead of the curve. Once you’ve decided on the model you’re interested in, do your research. Know the true market value of the car you want, which is the average price of the car in your area. This number is based on supply and demand and will give you a realistic idea of what you should pay.

Yes we can! If you’re ready for a new car but feel intimidated by pushy dealers and big decisions, I’m here to tell you – don’t be! Today, more women than ever are jumping in to the world of negotiations, and not just for our salaries. Buying your first car can feel overwhelming, but if you understand the seller’s needs, interests, constraints and costs, you can snag a deal as good as any man.

Look Under the Hood Even if you have no idea what you’re looking at, pretend. This may seem silly, but it’s a step that any serious car buyer takes, especially if you’re buying used. Have a quick look for any indication of dents, damage or rust, and speak up if you see something fishy.

No Sympathy

Everything is Negotiable

As women, we can’t help but let our emotions get in the way. For this, there’s a simple piece of advice – don’t. Even if you’re rock solid, the dealer will still think you’re emotions are going to influence you, which can affect the entire deal. Be aware of this and you’ll have a leg up.

The price of the car, the value of your trade-in, the dealer fees, the package prices and the interest rate on your financing are all negotiable. You might not feel like fighting every number they throw at you, but do it anyway. They won’t give it to you unless you ask.

“Build your own dreams, or someone else will hire you to build theirs.” Farrah Gray

Walk Away Don’t be tempted to let your emotions fuel your decision. The worst mistakes a woman can make when buying a car is to buy on impulse, to buy because you feel bad, or to buy because you think you’ll lose the deal. Often, walking out isn’t the end. The dealer will likely call you the next day with a much more attractive offer. So here’s to women taking matters into our own hands. Just remember to be firm in your plan and confidant in your abilities, and you’ll be sure to walk away happy. Flourish Magazine | June/2013 19

Life Secrets

Get good at something. Call it a hobby or a passion, whatever it is, just get good at it. Your occupation does not count!

Learn to be unaffected by the words of others. If someone went up to you and called you a fire hydrant, would you be upset? No because you are obviously not a fire hydrant, you are a human being. The same concept applies to when someone calls you something that you know you are not.

Meditate everyday for at least 20 minutes. In this modern world where everyone is so connected to everything else via cell phones, TV and internet, most people rarely enjoy the beauty of silence. The ability to quiet your mind and relax your body is an art and skill that everyone should develop.

Develop the ability to forgive. Forgiveness is something at which most people fail. Grudges only bring more misery to those who hold them and prevent good relations with the target. People make mistakes all of the time so why not have mercy when others do?

Learn to control your mind. What kind of skilled human are you if you cannot even control your own thoughts? While the human mind is described as being a stream of consciousness, that does not mean you can’t decide where your stream flows.

Be the person that makes others feel special. Be known for your kindness and sympathy. Visualize daily. It has been said, and proven, time and time again that what you focus on is what you get. If you complain all of the time, you will run into more of the things you complain about. The same goes for good things like health, wealth and happiness.

Learn to control your emotions. The only person that can make you unhappy is you! You are the one that decides to be affected by the words and actions of others. Realize this so that the next time you experience a negative emotion, you can find the strength within yourself to overcome it. Take a class in speed reading. Books are full of information that can enhance your knowledge base, vocabulary and yourself as a person. Speed-reading is an easy way to get at this info faster so that you can have more time for other endeavors.

“The only thing that stands between you and your dream is the will to try and the belief that it is actually possible.” Joel Brown

Learn to use your eyes to their full potential. Make constant eye contact when in conversation. Looking away (especially down) is a sign of inferiority and uncertainty. Master the piercing stare. You know when someone looks at you and it feels like they can see into your soul? Work on sharpening your gaze in the mirror. You’ll know you have it when it’s intimidating to continue looking at yourself. Master the one-eyebrow raise. This one isn’t necessary by any means, but hey, why not? Pick a brow to learn with and go look in a mirror. Raise both of your eyebrows but use your hand to hold down the brow that you want to stay down. Be mysterious. Don’t let off everything about you and definitely leave out some major details. There is something both alluring and mesmerizing about someone who no one knows fully about. Relax! Yes, work is very important and productive but you need to take some time to chill out everyday or you are going to burn

out faster than a candle with no oxygen. Work out those abs. Above any other muscle group in the entire body, the abs are the most important. They constitute your core, the center point of your body. Keep your brain sharp. The majority of people are stuck in ruts. They go to the same job everyday, hang out with the same friends and eat at the same places. While that may feel safe, it’s not the most stimulating lifestyle for your brain. Switch it up! Choose your friends wisely. You are affected far more than you think by the people you spend your time with. Do your friends share your values? Do they encourage you when you speak of your goals and dreams or do they scoff? Make sure the people around you are conducive to the lifestyle you want to lead. Do what you love. We only live life once, so why wouldn’t you want to spend it pursuing your bliss? To do anything else would be a tragic waste of the freedom you are allowed if you are reading this right now.

Don’t burn bridges. By that I mean maintain your relationships with people even if you think you are never going to see them again. You never know when you might need the help of someone you knew in the past. Keep a journal or diary. It sounds like a very monotonous habit at first, but when you get into it, that little book will become a great way to organize your thoughts and track your growth over the years Learn to use and trust your subconscious and intuition. When you spend time in silence everyday, listen not for words but for a feeling that tells you to do something. Do not mistake your own reasoning and thoughts for those of your subconscious. If you can track where the thought came from, (this thought led to that thought which led to this thought, etc.) then it was not from your subconscious. Come up with a life mantra. You know, like “carpe diemâ€? or “live life to the fullest,â€? but not as clichĂŠ. Make it something that really resonates with you so that you will actually stick to it.

probiotics

Q: What are probiotics, and should I be taking them? — Sally G., Boise, Idaho

A: If you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, the answer is a strong YES. Pregnant moms and their breastfed children have fewer infections and days of diarrhea if Mom is taking probiotics. And, almost weekly, new info comes out demonstrating how these friendly bacteria that live in our guts are essential for good health.

What do these beneficial bugs do? (There are trillions of them, outnumbering the cells in our body 10-to-1.) They help prevent colitis-related colon cancer, protect you from food poisoning, strengthen the immune system, ward off allergies and colds, ease eczema, stop diarrhea and irritable bowel syndrome, protect against heart attacks, increase longevity and may even decrease depression and other mood-related disorders. In addition, probiotics aid digestion by breaking down sugars – called polysaccharides – and amino acids in proteins. Some of the bacteria even produce vitamins and act as anti-inflammatories, reducing the risk of everything from arthritis to clogged arteries. So here’s what we say about eating probioticrich foods and taking supplements.

overall diet to supply what they need to thrive. That includes plenty of fiber from veggies, 100 percent whole grains and fruit and a well-balanced mix of vitamins and other nutrients. Too many of one (like the B vitamin choline) can keep the bugs from doing their good work. 2) Yogurt and other cultured foods deliver billions of bifidobacterium, streptococcus thermophiles and lactobacillus (particularly acidophilus), but they hardly dent the trillions already there. The bugs you eat do help digestion, but don’t change the overall composition of your intestinal bacteria colony. Stop eating the yogurt, and the bacteria it delivers go away after about two weeks. 3) We favor daily supplements that can make it through the stomach acid to your guts. The spore-containing Digestive Advantage (now combined with the company’s brand Sustenex, which we also like) contains bacillus coagulans GBI-30, 6086. Culturelle has lactobacillus GG, which is activated by stomach acid.

Q: I don’t know what to do. My sons, 12 and 14, are putting on weight. I’m a single mom and have a 9-to-5 job. I can’t keep them on a leash. How can I get them to eat better and walk away from the computer? – Amanda K., Charleston, W.V.

A: You have options, and you’re not alone. We’ll give you some suggestions, but if you need more support, community hospitals from Newark, N.J., to Cleveland and San Diego to Boston are

using the family approach to confront the rising tide of childhood obesity. In Houston, 11 county hospitals are offering a nine-week Childhood Nutrition and Exercise Program that requires parents to get into the act of learning how to eat healthy and exercise. The Cleveland Clinic offers a 12-week course for children and parents that includes a psychologist, dietitian and exercise physiologist. These programs are fun and successful! To emulate these programs at home, we suggest:

Be the psychologist. Talk to your kids about why being overweight is a problem for their health and their future employment opportunities (you can find that info at RealAge.com). Explain how you are in it together, as a family, and what you are going to do about it.

Be the dietician. To prevent unhealthy impulse purchases, before you go to the store, decide about healthy foods that you’re going to eat this week. A shopping list helps.

Be the exercise guru. Lead a 10-minute (or more) family walk before breakfast. Plan another activity after school and work. Bicycle, play soccer, baseball, basketball or any activity that gets everyone up and moving.

Be the master chef. Sign up your sous chefs. Planning and preparing meals with your kids gets them interested in eating all sorts of foods. You can find teenager-friendly recipes in our book YOU: The Owner’s Manual For Teens.

A Healthy

Dose of

Truth

If you’ve ever tried to slide out of a tight spot with minor untruths or to avoid responsibility with outright lies like Jim Carrey in Liar Liar, we’ve got some news for you: fibs make you unreliable and corrupt your health. During a two-and-a-half month study, folks who told fewer than three white lies a week (they were in the no-lies group!) were much less likely to complain about being tense or sad or to get sore throats and headaches than those in the frequent-fibbers group (average Americans, who tell around 10 white lies a week). Being virtually fib-free reduces anxiety and cuts your output of the stress hormone cortisol – and that reduces inflammation that harms blood vessels, the heart and cells throughout the body. Trying to be honest makes you like yourself and respect your friends more (and that makes all of your RealAges younger). Net result? You have more meaningful relationships, and your health hits new highs as you lower your blood pressure, LDL cholesterol, and blood glucose. Besides telling white lies and flat-out deceptions, lying also can be a way to keep secrets – and that’s not healthy either. Unburdening yourself boosts immunity, reduces depression and sharpens thinking. Another red zone for lying is in the doctor’s office. A Cleveland Clinic study found 28 percent of patients lie to their doctors, and that’s risky business. When you’re not giving your doctors a real picture of your health and habits, you’re not letting them help you get healthier.

The truth? Being honest is what we want to do! “When the past calls, let it go to voicemail, believe me, it has nothing new to say.” Unknown

The Myth: Your genes determine your destiny

The Truth: While genes do play a role in how we age, DNA isn’t the only thing that can determine how long we live and the health risks we face. Environment also plays a role, and so do our lifestyle choices. Experts say that healthy day-to-day choices are just as important as good genes.

What You Can Do: • Exercise! Perfect activities include low-impact sports like swimming and yoga • Don’t smoke • Drink in moderation • Enjoy a healthy, well-balanced diet • Get enough sleep • Stay in touch with friends At the end of the day, you are in control of your life, so enjoy every day and make the most of it!

Food

Fiction

As we go from day to day, all the food “no-nos” we’ve been diligently taught ring clear in our minds. Stay away from red meat, veggies are better raw, eat several small meals a day to stay slim – and yet, some of these well-known tidbits are more fiction than fact. Eggs are Bad for You

We’ve all been told ordering breakfast sunny side up really isn’t so sunny – for our hearts, at least. After all, eggs are one of the richest sources of artery-clogging cholesterol, so they must increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes, right? Wrong. According to the famous Framingham Study, it was found that egg consumption was unrelated to blood cholesterol levels or to coronary heart disease. Another investigation published in the Nutrition Bulletin argued that viewing eggs solely in terms of their dietary cholesterol is to ignore their potential benefits, primarily in areas of weight loss. Yet another study from the New England Journal of Medicine found an 88-year-old man who had been eating 25 eggs a day for 15 years. Would you believe it, his plasma cholesterol level was normal. It looks like we’re free to keep scrambling, frying and boiling our favorite henhouse delights.

Avoid Eating at Night or You’ll Gain Weight

Close the pantry, lock the fridge and for heaven’s sake, don’t open the bread box. After 9 o’clock, your metabolism slows down, and you know what that means; the kitchen is off limits! In theory, it makes sense that you’ll gain more during those hours of little activity, but the reality is just not so. Contrary to claims, your body doesn’t process food differently at different times of the day. Oregon Health and Science University studied night-eating in rhesus monkeys (which are easily relatable to humans), discovering that the late-night snackers were no more likely to gain weight than those who chose to eat during the day. Similarly, the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases insists it’s the amount of calories you consume, not the time of day, which affects weight. In that case, bring on the midnight munchies!

You Must Drink Eight, 8-Ounce Glasses of Water Each Day You would have to carry around a gallonsized water jug to meet this goal, save for one problem; this number seems to have fallen from the sky.

Our bodies do need plenty of water, and depending on your activity level, this 8x8 recommendation may not be far off. However, according to one investigation done by the American Journal of Physiology, it seems as though this 64 ounces a day suggestion came from thin air. After a thorough investigation of electronic data, old literature and consultations with several “fluid” nutritionist specialists, “No scientific studies were found in support of 8x8.” Sorry, H20, it’s nothing personal.

Nutrition Labels are Exact and Accurate Are you a tireless calorie counter? Well, put down the calculator, because your tallying days are at an end. Like all things in life, nothing is perfect, nutrition labels included. The FDA allows manufacturers a fairly wide margin of error on labeling – information can be off by up to 20 percent without fault. That’s the difference between your favorite frozen dinner claiming to contain 500 calories, when it really has 600. Even more startling is that many labels don’t fall within the “legal” range. The Journal of the American Medical Association found that, on average, packaged foods contain 8 percent more calories than their label suggests. For restaurant meals? That number jumps to 18 percent. We have to wonder, why bother counting at all?

Garlic

While saving money might not be the driving force behind your home-grown veggie project, you certainly don’t want to lose money, either. As it happens, garlic is one of the most cost-effective plants you can grow. What’s even better is that these little pods are extremely easy to care for, bud beautifully, and are exceptionally versatile in the kitchen. 1) Plant the cloves with the root end pointed down, about 2 inches beneath the soil. If you wish, you can cover the planted cloves with a layer of mulch.

3) As soon as leaf growth begins, start to foliar-feed your garlic every two weeks. (This is a technique of feeding plants by applying liquid fertilizer directly to their leaves.)

TIP: “Cracking is when you break the bulbs apart into cloves for planting. It’s best to separate garlic cloves as close to the planting time as possible.

4) When roughly half of the leaves turn yellow, it’s time to harvest!

2) During spring growth, garlic needs about an inch of water each week. However, be sure not to overwater your bulbs once they are nearing maturity. TIP: Mulch is a great way to ensure that your garlic is getting just the right amount of moisture. 26 Flourish Magazine | June/2013

TIP: During harvesting, if you pull too hard you may break the stalk from the bulb, which can cause it to rot. Instead, carefully dig up each bulb from below. 5) Tie the garlic together in bundles and hang them to cure for about 5 weeks in a shady, dry area. TIP: When your garlic is dry, recycled mesh bags are great for storage!

Study Finds Endurance Benefits from Chocolate Milk Could chocolate milk really be the new drink for post-workout recovery? By Kat Freestone

Some studies seem to think so. performed during endurance performance rides were significantly greater in the chocolate milk and FR [fluid replacement drink, AKA, Gatorade] trials compared to the CR [carbohydrate replacement drink, AKA, Endurox] trials.” Furthermore, it was found that subjects cycled 49 percent longer following chocolate milk ingestion.

The study concludes that, “chocolate milk, with its high carbohydrate and protein content, may be considered an effective alternative to commercial FR and CR for recovery from exhausting, glycogendepleting exercise.” It looks like Gatorade and Endurox have some competition: our inner kid.

Roman

Krznaric Interviewed by Lauren Douglass

Cultural thinker and writer Roman Krznaric is the author of the insightful new book “How to Find Fulfilling Work.” Krznaric shares his knowledge on the the ins and outs of job satisfaction, career changes and the future of the workforce.

Why do you think so many people are unsatisfied with their work? Over the past three decades, there’s been a rising expectation for work that’s about more than just the salary. Today, more and more people are looking for jobs that embody their values, passions and talents, whether they’re a taxi driver or a recent college graduate. That helps explain why job satisfaction in the US is currently at a record low of 47 percent. Twenty years ago when people weren’t asking so much of their careers, it was up at 60 percent.

Should people be afraid to change careers? Around 50 percent of people who want a career change are afraid to take action. We often fear leaving because we lack the confidence to follow another path, or we think we don’t have the right skills, or we’re worried that if it doesn’t work out we’ll be struggling to make our mortgage payments. But it’s worth remembering that human beings are naturally risk averse, or as the psychologist Daniel Kahneman puts it, “We hate losing twice as much as we like winning.” In other words, we tend to exaggerate everything that could possibly go wrong.

In your book, you discuss the difference between a generalist and a specialist. What’s that difference? For the past century, our culture has been telling us that in order to be successful you must become a specialist in a narrow field, say a corporate lawyer or a pediatrician. But go back to the Renaissance, and you’ll find that the ideal was to become a generalist 30 Flourish Magazine | June/2013

who nurtured their many talents at the same time. An increasing proportion of people are becoming dissatisfied with the old model of the specialist. Let’s face it: most of us recognize that we have multiple interests, talents and identities. How strange to think that a single career could really offer us deep satisfaction over the long run!

What do you think philosophy can teach us about career change? Probably the world’s best piece of career advice was proffered over 2,000 years ago by the Ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle: “Where the needs of world and your talents cross, there lies your vocation.” That wise thought is consistent with modern career research, which shows that it isn’t a job with a big salary and big status that will make you happy, but rather one which combines putting your values into practice and doing something that you’re really good at. I think anybody stepping out into the world of work should put this Aristotle quote on their screensaver.

How has your life experience influenced your book? I’ve tried lots of different jobs – and failed at plenty of them too! I used to be an academic teaching sociology and politics, then switched to being a professional gardener. I’ve tried being a financial journalist but also a carpenter and

community worker. Along the way I’ve done tennis coaching and the very challenging job of a being a father of young twins. Today most of my time is spent as a writer. Having been experimental with my own career has really helped me reflect on what a meaningful job looks like, and what it takes to overcome fear and make substantive career changes.

Would you say you’ve found the ideal career? I do love being a writer about the art of living. But I also recognize that we change as people throughout our lives – we develop new interests and passions, we have families, our values change. We decide to be an engineer or lawyer when we’re 18 or 21, but 10 years later we’re no longer the same person that we once were: over time, our self and our work tends to drift out of alignment. So I’d like to think that if I feel I have changed as a person, that I’d be prepared to take the step of exploring new career possibilities.

What’s a quote or motto that you live by? I’ve always liked Zorba the Greek: “A man needs a little madness, or else he never dares to cut the rope and be free.” Roman Krznaric is the author of “How to Find Fulfilling Work,” due out from Picador on April 23, and teaches courses on career change at The School of Life.

Learning School May Be Out, but

is Still In!

School hasn’t been out that long, and you’re already hearing the dreaded, “I’m bored” from the kids. Don’t despair! Grab a seat and a deck of cards and cure summer boredom with one of these fun math games!

“Ten’s Castle” (2-4 players)

• One deck of cards, Jokers removed

How to Play: Begin by creating a “card castle” – five cards face up on the first row, four cards face up on the second row, three cards face up on the third row, two cards face up on the fourth row, and one card face up on the fifth row. Place the remaining cards in a deck near the castle. The first player searches the card castle for a 10 – a face card or a combination of cards that total 10. The player replaces the cards taken with cards from the deck. Game play then rotates to the next player. When all cards from the pile have been used, players count the 10s they have picked up (10, 20, 30, 40…). The player with the most 10s wins.

Variations: This game can be played with varying target numbers for additional practice – “Sixteen’s Castle” for example, where players would find combination to create sixteen. For a greater challenge, build the “card castle” face down so that players have to rely on memory to find the combinations. By spending a few minutes immersing your children in these games, you’ll not only be curing their boredom, you’ll also be extending their learning and helping them retain necessary skills. 32 Flourish Magazine | June/2013

“Double It”

(1 or more players)

• One deck of playing cards, Jokers and face cards removed • Grid paper and crayons

How to Play: Shuffle the cards and place in a single deck. The first player draws a card from the deck. The player mentally doubles the number drawn and colors in that number of squares on the grid paper. Play continues until all cards have been drawn. Winners are determined by the “Fact Checker”, a parent or older sibling who checks to see that facts are colored correctly. As the “Fact Checker” calls out the number sentence (8 + 8 = _), the player must answer correctly (16).

Variations: For younger players, simply color the number of squares on the grid that corresponds to the number drawn. For older players, write the number sentence for the doubles fact beneath the color grid (8 + 8 = 16, for example), or have the players use multiplication instead of addition.

“Fishing for a 10” (2-4 players)

• deck of playing cards, Jokers and face cards removed

How to Play: Game play is similar to the game “Go Fish”. The dealer deals seven cards to each player and places the remaining cards in a pile. The players then look for 10s in their hands (two cards that, when added together, equal 10). Place each 10 face up for other players to verify. First player then asks another player for a number that will go with a number in his or her hand to make a 10. If the player has that number, it’s handed over. If not, the other player “fishes for a 10” by drawing from the deck. Game continues until one player has no more cards in his or her hand.

Variations: For extra practice, have players write the equations on a “score sheet.” Tally the scores by counting by tens. For a more challenging game, players may use three cards to make a 10.

Get

Off

The Scale

By Kat Freestone Out of all of your healthy-living goals, does your weight seem to take priority? Do you step on the scale day after day, only to frown at what you see? Many of us get caught up in our weight when we should be focusing on our health. Scales are imperfect, and they tend to draw us away from what’s important, like a healthy diet and sufficient exercise. Here are four great reasons to get off the scale once and for all: Scales Aren’t Accurate A scale doesn’t take certain things into account like water weight (your body is 60 percent water, after all) or last night’s well-earned celebratory dinner. Your scale can’t tell if those 3 pounds you gained are from fat, muscle or bloating. With this in mind, it seems silly that many of us count on the number on a scale — or that we let it affect our happiness.

If You’ve Just Started The hard work of diet and exercise isn’t always reflected by your weight, especially during those first few weeks. Many people experience delayed results, which causes them to feel discouraged and to lose sight of their long-term goals. To avoid this, forget the number on the scale and focus more on learning how to exercise right. Come up with a realistic plan that works for you and your lifestyle.

Getting Discouraged Of course, changing your lifestyle habits can be difficult. After a late-night binge or a week of skipped workouts, your

first instinct may be to jump on the scale to see what “damage” has been done. Resist the temptation, as this will only fuel your discouragement. Instead, get back on track the right way. Ask for the support of your friends and family who can encourage you to reach your goals.

Feel It Out A few weeks into your new, healthy lifestyle, how do you feel? Do you have more energy? Has your mood improved? If you’re too concerned about your weight to notice these things, then it’s time to take a step back. Intuitive indicators like mood and energy levels are what you should really be focusing on, so ditch the scale and take a moment to evaluate the tangible changes you’ve actually made.

Despite the emphasis that’s put on weight, it’s time to get off the scale. Focus on making small changing towards a healthier lifestyle and making the most of every day; the weight will follow.
