Trojan Horse
June 2014
We made it! After years of carrying massive textbooks, forgetting locker combinations, stressing over the physics and statistics projects, the JLAP and APUSH, crying over the fetal pig dissection, painful AP tests and the equally painful Splash Zone injuries, we’ve finally reached the end of high school. As we head onto college, we’re saying goodbye not only to each other and Wilson High, but also to our childhood years. Though we’re moving on to bigger and better things, the memories that we’ve made will continue to live on. We wish you all the best on your future ventures.

Three seniors seek futures outside of college lecture halls.
Cory Martinez - US Marine Corp Cory Martinez’s academic future didn’t come in the form of an acceptance letter from a university, but rather a recruitment contract binding him to the Marines for six years of reserve duty. “I’ve always been interested in the military, so when I turned 18 I just went for it. The Marine Corps is the branch with the most heritage and it’s known for its prowess in combat.” His parents supported the decision, knowing that this was a dream of his since he was a child. “My parents knew I would enlist since I was little because I was kind of obsessed with the army and military in general. They kinda had time to prepare.” As soon as he starts, he’ll have to go through three months of boot camp, followed by another month and a half of combat training. After that, he’ll still have three more months of specialty schooling for combat engineering. In addition to his training, Cory will also be balancing schoolwork. A reserve contract, unlike active duty, means that he won’t be serving every day. “I chose a reserve contract so I could go to school and serve at the same time.” Cory is planning on attending PCC for a few years before transferring to OSU. “After all my training is complete, which will take about a year, year and a half, I was planning on going into nursing, but it could change,” Cory said. While many of us have plans or some general idea of what we’ll be doing after college, Cory Martinez only has one goal: “I want to be a billionaire playboy.” While unsure of how he’ll be making his billions and find his way into Hefner’s grotto, Cory shares a secret desire that may be his ticket to fame and fortune: “I honestly would love to be an actor,” he admits.

The Senior Issue While many of us will be toiling away at universities trying to achieve greatness through our academics and careers, Cory will be living one of his dreams in the very near future. And although his means of education are through an unorthodox method, he’ll be learning while doing something he loves: serving the country he holds dear. “I just wanna serve my country; I feel like I’m obligated to. It just brings me great pride to know that I’m doing that.”
Teagan Aborn-Duffy - Gap Year “Mainly, I’m going to go with the fflow and try not to plan too far ahead. I’ll probably start looking for jobs in retail/waitressing around August and continue living with my parents for a few more months/a year until I can move out. Other than that I plan on taking a lot of road trips this summer. I want to stay in Portland, unless it continues to get overpopulated, in which case all apartments would probably either be unaffordable or taken. My best bet is to keep it local. I really want to end up working in a salon and/or a makeup counter. I know that sounds like a weird dream job, but it’s what I’ve found fun since I was 12, so after about a year of just working and saving up money, I want to go to a local beauty school. [My parents] are super supportive. They trust me to do what’s best for myself. They don’t pressure me super hard into anything, which I’m grateful for because I know a lot of kids go to college just because their parents want them to.”
Jordan Macgregor - Beauty School “My life’s goal is to become a special effects makeup artist (specifically for horror movies), which is why I’m going to beauty school. I want to work on movies, but before that I want to work in a salon doing esthetics. I’m going to school full time, which should take about a year and a half to complete a full cosmetology course (it varies depending on what you study). It’s much cheaper than a standard college. I’m going to a private beauty school. It’s $27,000 total for what I’m studying. My parents weren’t super happy about me going to beauty school, but after a lot of research and touring schools they’re now my biggest supporters!” Written by Vincent Hand
