Flowing upriver defies the laws of physics. Riding a downhill e-bike

bike uphill requires a similar miracle. Fortunately, we have e-bikes and experienced riders such as Guido Tschugg. Being a World Cup athlete, Red Bull Rampage rider and moto-crosser Guido Tschugg knows how to handle big bikes, uphill, downhill or through the air.

we get an understanding of how the surfaces behave. Slipping here would result in a huge drop. You have to be able to trust the bike’s traction. It’s safe to say that a RUX has probably never been ridden through an uphill wall-ride before, but Guido masters every escarpment. No one can deny that he’s earned every inch of the downhill to come.

What better place to test his skills than in the desert of Utah on the Slick rocks in Arizona? Utah is home to the Red Bull Rampage, with trails so extreme they’re bordering on insane. Guido’s challenge is to first ride up everything he wants to shred later on his DH ebike. Since carrying or pushing the bike would be exhausting, Guido has to find himself some appropriate ascents. He’s never ridden a RUX triple crown fork uphill quite so fast. Climbing on this terrain pushes the rider to the limits both technically and physically, even with motor-assist.

In addition, with the Rux up front, maximum exhilaration is guaranteed! This is no ordinary fork, we all know that, but who would have thought it could handle gravity coming at it head on?

If you’ve ever been part of it, you’ll understand why. The area hugs the small desert town of Virgin in the state of Utah. Perched on the top of the mountain, the start line launches the riders over seemingly countless ridges and canyons. As a result, the lines are so technically demanding that the number of riders prepared to sacrifice themselves at this alter of freeriding is dwindling year on year. Rather than shying away, SRSUNTOUR has already competed four times since 2015. Our WERX athletes Mitch Chubey, James Doerfling and Kurt Sorge arrived with the next generation RUX R2C2 PCS fork and shovelled out totally sick lines into the hillside before building offsets of unbelievable proportions.

Thanks to an imminent storm, the final run was brought forward. (Even without storms, winds are unpredictable up here on the bare desert mountain.) Both Mitch Chubey and Kurt Sorge made it to the finals but high winds forced them to cancel their second runs. Kurt Sorge struck while the iron was hot and focussed totally on his first and only run, which included an insane Suicide No Hander, enormous Whips and a Backflip No Hander. The judges were in no doubt and Kurt took over the Hotseat. As rider after rider tried and failed to top his run, it was only a matter of time before Kurt was crowned King of the Red Bull Rampage. SRSUNTOUR is equally proud of Kurt’s victory and its first Rampage title. It goes without saying, that you need luck on your side to win but with the awesome support of the WERX team, anything is possible in the craziest freeride event on earth.

The tough DUROLUX contains the DNA of our Rampage and World Cup fork RUX and since it’s a single crown fork, it’s incredibly versatile meaning you can climb and shred trails. It is the perfect partner for the trails in Bellingham WA, USA or Squamish BC, Canada. There are literally hundreds of kilometres of trails. Riding the DUROLUX means we can tackle every gradient, we don`t need shuttle or lifts. At the Coast Gravity Park, Sunshine Coast BC, the DUROLUX feels right at home. We gratefully accept the shuttle to save our legs for the immense jumps on the way down. We’ve got huge, well-built jumps in Europe too, none more so than in Swiss Chaumont. However, Les Arcs, down in the French Alps, represents a true acid test for the DUROLUX. Everything is extremely steep. Normally the domain of double crown forks; the DUROLUX cheerfully clears everything; we have the photos and videos to prove it to you. At the Megavalanche with the SR Suntour Durolux World Tour crew. A mass start at 3,300 metres altitude on a glacier. Descend 2,500 metres through ski runs, over boulders, down cols, across meadows and bike park trails into the finish line scattered with the bodies of exhausted bikers. The Megavalanche is, without doubt, one of the hardest races in mountain biking and SRSuntour has been there every pedal stroke of the way for the past twelve years.

This year’s Megavalanche has even greater significance; it has become part of the DUROLUX World Tour. Our SRSUNTOUR WERX team athletes have set out to prove to the world just what an outstanding fork the DUROLUX is. The Megavalanche is the ideal testing ground for SRSuntour’s latest material and technology. Four days of training gave us bags of time to test various set ups. After several test rides and consultation with our mechanics, I found my ideal setup. 170 mm travel and one of three volume spacers, inflation pressure of 85 psi for my body weight of 78 kg. The high-speed compression set to the second of five steps. The low speed compression with twelve of eighteen clicks, the high-speed rebound with four clicks and the low speed rebound relatively open. That's how I can ride fast and efficiently and still handle the rough sections. Once the bike setup is complete and all the lines have been memorized, I can hardly wait for the qualification to start. I’ve been handed the start number 202 which puts me in the first starting block. My goal is to finish in the top three in qualification in order to gain front row gridding on race day.

Ten seconds until start. Everybody is supremely focused, the barrier tape shoots up and the riders swarm into the first bend with me leading them out – yeah! I keep it together through the first grit curves and over the snow field. I temporarily drop back to fourth before overtaking the second-placed rider. Despite having what seems an unbridgeable gap, I overtake the leader a few turns later. An error allows him to rejoin me briefly until I put in an attack and reclaim the lead and eventually take the qualification win. All training and consultation has paid off not just for me but for SRSUNTOUR with more qualification victories. Sunday 4:50 am. It’s finals day. It’s still dark outside and even coffee can’t banish the tiredness. I don't really have an appetite so it takes a good half an hour for me to eat my cup of porridge and a boiled egg. At 6:15 am we climb into the gondola and my tiredness gives way to excitement. The ski slope on the glacier is perfectly prepared and looks pretty fast. I am called up as tenth rider and choose a starting position in the middle of the row. Next comes the warm up. I run up the hill several times and do some push-ups - I'm ready. The snow get slushy so I decide to start the race run-

ning next to my bike. One minute until the start. The music changes to the specific techno song and the crowd begins to roar. Thirty seconds to and, the helicopter moves into position. Ten seconds to go. The speakers boom “Aaalaaarma”, the barrier tape jolts up. I start well and find myself in sixth position. Admittedly the snow is way too smooth and the fistful of riders ahead of me furrow deep ruts. I start to stumble as I sideslip into one such rut. Only ten seconds after the start I fall off my bike and see the throng heading my way. F**k! Fortunately, I stay on my feet and start racing in the lead group. Since the snow is so rutty, we mostly race on foot. My roadwork pays off and I can make up ground. After the glacier, I opened up a gap to the riders behind me but also a gap opened up to the riders in front. After riding a very lonely Megavalanche I crossed the finish line in 50min 41sec. What a race for our SRSUNTOUR crew! Riding the Durolux Remy Absalon won the Megavalanche outright. In sixth place, Dimitri Tordo narrowly missed the podium and despite my fall I made it down in 23rd place, the best of the Germans.

Our WERX team “Centurion Vaude” takes on the Epic with two teams. Knowing how to pace yourself, when to pull on the front when to sit in and when to attack is what makes these riders amongst the best in world. The physical, psychological and of course mechanical demands of this race are in the extreme. If it can go wrong, it does go wrong. And this year it went very wrong before a pedal had been turned. One of the pairings was forced to withdraw through illness and injury. Preparation is key and as you would expect there was a standby duo ready to step in. The teams’ bikes were equipped with AXON WERX full carbon forks and UNAir rear shock. Not only is this the toughest mountain bike stage race in the world, technical support isn't allowed during the stages which means the riders need equipment that won't let them down in the middle of nowehere. Needless to say there were no issues with suspension and thanks to our Quick Service Product (QSP) philosophy maintenance between the stages was stress free. After 8 gruelling days both teams finished on the podium of this remarkable race. 64

The program of SRSUNTOUR WERX When you are climbing, how do you know if you are close to the top? Well, the legs get heavier, possibly the climb gets steeper; the air becomes thinner as well as the number of competitors. A few years ago when SRSUNTOUR and our WERX program set out we focussed on the gradient. Despite the top being out of sight, as long as the way was up, we knew we were headed in the right direction. When the climb got too steep, we slowed down and occasionally we MORE INFO: marked time when conditions were too rough. However, we never took a step back. We fought every inch of the way. The view today is from the top of the Pic Blanc with Remy Absalon having captured the Megavalanche (the longest, hardest downhill race in the world) twice. The Canadian Kurt Sorge has crested another peak by winning the most spectacular Big Mountain Fre- www.srsuntour-cycling.com/de/werx/ eride event in the world, the Red Bull Rampage in 2015. We have not reached our personal zenith yet but we take the rarefied air as a sign of continued success. In the downhill World Cup Series, our athletes are battling it out for the podium places. In 2016, we climbed onto the men’s elite podium in the XCO World Cup. We even have Olympic athletes at both U23 women and men levels. There are now four Olympians riding SRSuntour. Who knows where the top is, but we are relentless in our pursuit of the summit. The SRSuntour WERX program continues to flourish in the rarefied atmosphere of high altitude success.

Q-LOC is a patented quick release system for thru axles fully deserving of the name "quick". Q-LOC 2 is the logical evolutionary step, guaranteeing 100% compatibility with all kinds of hub axle designs. A simple push and a little twist of the nut enables a quick removal of the axle.
