race proven engineering The target of our WERX program is to build products that meet the expectations of the world’s best athletes. The development process allows a select group of pro riders to achieve their goals as athletes and the lessons learned by the R&D team help us as a company build better products for everyone. Our state of the art R2C2 racing cartridge with high and low speed for both rebound and compression damping was developed with a small but highly professional group of young and talented riders. One of these is the up and coming world cup DH team VoulVoul Racing. We spoke with the team manager Patrice Aflatet about the last 2 seasons with SRSUNTOUR.

SRSUNTOUR: How long has VoulVoul racing been in existance? Patrice Aflatet: Guillaume Gravoulet (aka « VoulVoul ») created the team in 1998 and I joined him a year later. SRS: What was the concept behind the team? Patrice Aflatet: We were initially focused on helping talented young riders (Cadet / Junior) to compete both regionally and nationally. After a while we realized we needed a leader and so we signed Romain Goulesque a highly talented rider without a team due to a year of injury. It wasn’t long until the results started coming in more importantly the team structure and spirit was in place. SRS: Who is driving force behind the team and why? Patrice Aflatet: I guess that’s me (Patrice). I manage the technical, sponsorship and race organisation side of things. Guillaume mainly manages the athletes and their preparation. SRS: Was it a goal from the beginning to get to World Cup level? Patrice Aflatet: Participation at the World Cup is, of course, an achievement but it was not our initial intention. This came as riders developed and results improved. SRS: What is the big difference from the early days and today’s World Cup level? Patrice Aflatet: I would say there are three main differences : - the budget is huge and we have to make enormous efforts to find sponsors, - It takes up a lot more time, especially for me and it’s difficult to prioritise (I have a real job beside the sport)

- We have to keep an eye on thousands of details at, paddock setup, bikes, parts, settings, pilots comfort... SRS: What are the goals for the future and especially for 2016? Patrice Aflatet: We’re working on an even better organized team for 2016. Our plan is to have the riders in the best place for riding, reaching their goals and keep the family spirit. SRS: Please describe the main characters of your athletes, mechanics and management. Patrice Aflatet: The World Cup team consists of four people, Baptiste Pierron (22) and Rudy Cabirou (21) still young but both elite class riders. We have Marine Cabirou (Rudy’s Sister) 18 years old. She is in the Junior Women Class and will move on to elite in 2016. I (Patrice Afflatet) manage the logistics including, travel, accommodation, paddock (with some greatly appreciated help from SRSUNTOUR), administrative stuff, track walk and obviously most of the mechanics. At some events, we also have assistant mechanics. SRS: How did you come into contact with SRSUNTOUR? Patrice Aflatet: Through Stephane Guillaume (French suspension specialist) whom I had already known for a few years. SRS: Why are you riding SRSuntour products? Patrice Aflatet: It was an interesting challenge to be part of the development, and the products are reallygood! SRS: What main aspects from your point of view define the benefits of working with SRSUNTOUR? 16

1. The data acquisition system is required to analyse impact forces and impact accelerations. 2. Marine Cabirou, Junior World Cup winner and also a top ten contender for the elite class. 3. The individual tune. 4. Downloading data from the DDA system after the test session.

Patrice Aflatet: We work very closely together and exchange info and experiences often. It’s normally not always possible to split yourself into two or three and be setting up products, tuning them and attending races every couple of weeks; the wonderful people at SRSUNTOUR make it possible. SRS: Tell me about your work with Stephane on Rux 2K16 including R2C2? Patrice Aflatet: I work closely with Stephane. I think our similar backgrounds help a lot in identifying what does and what doesn’t work. This makes exchanges a lot faster. We spend a lot of time testing with riders like Rudy. He did a lot of runs with a data acquisition system which enhances our understanding of the behaviour of the suspension and in turn enables us to optimise tuning. SRS: How does the new RUX feel for your riders and how has it helped them? Patrice Aflatet: I think the results speak for themselves. We were lucky enough to be using the R2C2 since day one and it is a real improvement. No matter what other options we put in front of them, our riders always want to use the R2C2! SRS: How did it feel to break into the

top 10 of the World Cup with Rudy in Lourdes? How was the party afterwards? Patrice Aflatet: That was really emotional. I was at the top of the track when Rudy was racing. The tension was awful as I waited for the time checks. With 10th place, he showed everybody, including himself, that his qualification run was no fluke. Immediately after the race we just fell into each others arms and sobbed. We have been through so much together – so emotional. To be honest with you, we didn’t party in Lourdes. After the race is before the race. It was just the beginning of a long season. SRS: How does it feel to be „today´s fastest“ pretty much every World Cup race with Marine who is dominating the female junior ranking? Patrice Aflatet: Obviously it’s very special. She deserves it as she works incredibly hard. She has built on last year’s results (she won the three World Cup she participated it and finished 3rd at the World Championships despite a puncture) and despite her current injury is still leading the Junior World Cup overall. We have also compared her overall results and she is always in the top ten of the women elite class. This is very encouraging for 2016.

Megavalanche 2015

It is said to be the hardest enduro mass start race in the world, the Megavalanche in the French Alps town of Alpe D'Huez. Almost 2000 fearless participants seek the challenge of the 30km trail year after year and fight their way down the challenging trails from the summit of the Pic Blanc (3.330m) down to Allemont, which lies 2600 meters below. This years Megavalanche race report is brought to you by the canadian freerider Mark Matthews, known from the movie â&#x20AC;&#x17E;Builderâ&#x20AC;&#x153;. Megavalanche was a wild experience. The course starts off in typical massstart fashion: Take the seat of your pants, and fly by it. The race begins in a crowded countdown. The level of excitement is indomitable. As soon as the buzzer goes you’re dropping into the steep snowy slopes of the glacier, neck and neck with 100 other riders in your heat. It then transitions to fast and flowy singletrack in the forest. If you can finish in under an hour, you’re fast! The week kicked off with us driving up the winding road to Alpe d’Huez. It was pretty cool to see writing all over the road from previous Tour de France’s. This road is a difficult climbing stage of the tour. The views to Megavalanche got more epic and my stoke levels rose as we made our way closer to the village.

Remy Absalon

After two days of familiarizing myself with the course it was time for the qualifier rounds. My run started off strong. I began in the first row of the second heat, giving me a strong advantage from the start. I was in the top 5 for the top half of the course before I got dual flat tires. This set me back and I ended up in Saturdayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s challenger race. The challenger was a fun experience because it was more relaxing and I didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have to stress about my result. I was having a great time capturing ridiculous GoPro footage on the glacier. It was a constant battle through the melting slushy snow as I swerved through riders dropping like flies. On Sunday it was game time for the other athletes who made it into the big show. This day marked the 10th year Anniversary of SR Suntour partnering the event, and what better way to celebrate than have a team rider take the win. Remy Absalon conquered the Megavalanche, which had felt like a long time coming. It was Remyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 9th Megavalanche and third year as an SR Suntour athlete. He finally won! 36

Rear Shock Development

With the successful evolution of our suspension forks it was only a matter of time before we set our sights on refining our rear shock platforms. The goal always starts with creating a performance product with QSP at its core. Rear shocks can be tricky to design as each bicycle manufacture designs their bikes with various leverage curves and in turn tuning a rear shock for specific bicycles requires flexibility of compression and rebound damping coupled with spring curve adjustments. The flexibility in those 2 key areas is where QSP comes in, its where simplicity meets performance and what makes a SR SUNTOUR product. To begin any project there needs to be some specific product goals, proper testing equipment and riders who can provide quality feedback, can ride fast and hard to truly push the limits of a product for validation. SR SUNTOUR began with what we had WERX factory team riders Remy Absalon, Karim Armour, Kyle Warner, Casey Coffman and Eric Carter to perform the tough but fun job of ride validation. We also made large investments in the DB3 dyno machine and the

DDA DATA acquisition system, which provided a new level of validation with detailed analysis of our designs and speed of testing and tuning. The one thing we knew we already had was two solid chassis designs with the Epixon and Durolux rear shocks. The remaining goals were to create a new shim based damping system that allowed easy and fast tuning for bicycles, improve oil flow, reduced stichion wherever possible, improve function of external controls and increase overall durability and reliability. With the plan and execution set, the R&D team went to work, the WERX athletes went to work and the new UNAir LO-R and DUAir RC and LO-R are the fruits of their labor. What came out was a complete new piston and shim based damper design, a simple new negative spring design, improved main bushing design and air pipe technology. With the worlds toughest races such as the Enduro World Series and the Megavalanche as proving grounds our rear shocks are WERX athlete approved.

The WERX program is dedicated to develop and test high end suspension products. Athletes on this program come from different backgrounds and disciplines. The spectrum goes from short travel XC to World Cup DH and Big Mountain Freeride such as the Red Bull Rampage. They have one thing in common: They are all world class riders and testers. Thanks to their feedback from competitions, training and test sessions we developed the new R2C2 cartridge. The R2C2 cartridge allows a separate damper adjustment for high and low-speed for both compression and rebound. The DB3 testing machine showed us how accurately the new damper absorbs big and fast impacts. Tests in the lab need to be verified by field tests with our World Cup racers. And yes, under racing conditions we discover some limitations from time to time. Any discovery is like a lucky break that gives us the opportunity to improve the products. We appreciate the hard work from our WERX riders all over the world and all around the year, travelling from World Cup to World Cup or going back-country to places with no phone service and epic riding.
