for all! Every year in June, D.C. shuts down the city to host an extravagant range of events, parades, and discussions in support of the LGBTQ+ community during the Annual LGBT Pride Celebration.
AAer asking about Legacy DC’s support for DC Black Pride, Pae stated, “We were not aware a DC Black Pride existed.”
This year, D.C streets were filled with flashy costumes and loads of celebrations. The LGBTQ+ community gathers each year to celebrate their civil liberties and to address the attitudes and injustices that limit the communities ability to express themselves.
It’s not hard to believe, as DC Black Pride is not as heavily promoted or sponsored. Even with the lack of promotion, DC Black Pride remains active within their community and has hosted what they call “The Original Pride Parade”, originating in 1991. It started as a rally of 800 people congregating under the unifying notion, “Let’s All Come Together”, raising awareness and fundin funding for HIV/AIDS.
Heavenly Eubanks, an LGBTQ+ community ally and an employee of MGM National Harbor, joined her team on the MGM float. “The pride parade was so much fun this year, it was extremely diverse, a beautiful thing to see,” stated Eubanks. Several local Black-owned businesses, including Legacy DC, were involved and we asked about their experience. Legacy Legac DC, is an art gallery that features digital and graffiti artists as well as a marijuana giiing exchange located at 14th and U Street in Northwest DC. They believe it is vital to not only stand beside their LGBTQ+ employees but also stand behind them, by supporting their lifestyles and beliefs. “We care about our community… and partner with local artists who were we involved in Pride like No Kings, Rizthagreat, and ambassadors of our brand like DJ Nahfr,” says Pae X, Legacy DC’s Creative Director, and Store Manager. written by : Bettya Burgess | @iamxi
So, let’s all come together! We must recognize our differences and ways we can work together for this world to improve. Let the inclusiveness of Pride be an example for us all. Black Pride and Capital Pride are Pride for All!
