Undertaken with an ambitious time sched ule and strict budgetary constraints, the design of this new office building provides inviting light-filled spaces appropriate for the owner's creative business. The Photography: Douglas Kozel, AlA

30,OOO-square-foot building is the head quarters for a communications design firm and also provides rental space with underground parking. The innovative plan consists of two floors of highly-flexible loft space, featuring continuous clearstory windows, sloped interior ceilings and an abundance of natural light. Employing tilt up constmction, the design expresses the qualities of repetition, mass, texture and planarity inherent in this technique.

Jury Comment "In terms ofthe way the materials are handled and how the spaces are orga nized, this project rises to a whole other level. It has very elegant details and is a very original arrangement for an office building. The building is very well con ceived. "

The design of this 2l4,OOO-square-foot university education and basic research facility succeeds both functionally and symbolically. Its geometries are a remark able synthesis of three major elements, including a two-story base containing student activity spaces, a research labora tory tower, and a library. The building's exterior dramatizes its internal functions. For example, a grid of punched openings in solid masonry reflects the modular nature of the enclosed laboratories. Sym bolically, Rennebohrn Hall demonstrates the increasing importance of the pharmacy profession to interdisciplinary health care research, teaching and practice. Jury Comment

"The building program is very well trans lated into the material, palette, expression, scale. language and exterior ofthe build ing. This results in beautiji" amalgams of massing forms, which seem entirely appro priate to this half-campus, half-scientific research building. "

as a public park that overlooks the river. The 24-foot tower provides storage for the rowing oars, defines the site entrance and acts as an illuminated beacon in the night.

A polycarbonate curtain wall faces the river and extends the entire length of the building, glowing softly at dusk. The plaza provides a staging area for launching the sculls and

doubles as a public gathering space with access to the river.

Jury Comment 'This is an easy project to fall in love with because of its clarity in both concept and presentation. If has an interesting combination ofarchitectural elements and sustainability features. The structure itself sings with poetic fervor. Its simple gestures create a very open relationship with the water

and the city. This project is very elegant. "

ACT, Inc.

Contractor:

McComas-Lacina Construction

Location:

Iowa City, Iowa

This new headquarters of the nation 's largest developer and administrator of educational and career assessments is located on the site of the original 1959 facility.

The project was designed as a cloister of multiple buildings connected by interior and exterior common spaces and pedestrian paths. It includes a 120,OOO-square-foot office facility and a 50,OOO-square-foot commons building, which contains the library, meeting and training rooms and a cafeteria. The facility creates a sense of community that fosters collaboration among groups, departments and individuals.

Jury Comment Photography: Hedrich-Blessing

"So many projects talk about creating a sense ofplace - this one actually does. As a collective, it is successful as an urban gesture in a rural setting. There is a clearshot view through most ofthese bUildings, preserving a very healthy exposure to day足 light. This makes sense in a building that is about careers, work andfinding where

people are going to be spending their time in the future . .. 12 AlA Wisconsin Design Awards

This project exemplifies Milwaukee's new-found urban vitality. What was once a black top roof above a loft in a renovated 1920s warehouse is now an open air pa足 vilion defined by a curtain of multicolored transparent and translucent plastic panels. Supported by a prefabricated steel trellis, the panels can be arranged to provide Photography: Brian Johnsen. AlA

various levels of privacy, offer shelter and act as a picture frame and color filter for different views of the city and its skyline. At night, a lighting system transforms the panels into a fantasy of colors and shadows that are visible from the interstate below. The design solution is a creative response to the owner 's desire for a multi足 purpose outdoor living room .

Jury Comment "We were entertained and inspired by this project. Its 'magic lantern' qualities are intriguing because a blank brick fat;ade is turned into a projection screen. This is

very ingenious. Hopefully, this project will inspire others to think creatively about how they can create accommodations in these underutilized industrial structures. "

Location :

This outpatient clinic utilizes a creative untraditional approach for the structure and exterior fi nishes that results in an attractive health care facility with an atti足 tude. The design solution involves the use Photography: Del Brown Photograp hy

of a steel systems constructed structure, incorporating steel frames and purlins.

To complement the split-faced masonry, a concealed fastener exterior metal panel system was applied to create a durable skin. The resulting reduction in structural costs made it possible to increase the clinic's interior volume, glazing and fea足 ture finishes, as well as incorporate higher eaves and clerestory windows to introduce natural light to the central works paces .

Jury

Comment

"This project has a seemingly innocent and humble quality to its exterior materi足 als. There is a very rich coming together in the central waiting area. The strategy of using industrial building systems for this kind ofapplication also is intriguing and rather unexpected "

The resunected ASQ Center is considered one of Milwaukee's architectural gems and a catalyst for downtown resurgence. The main design challenge was to recon足 Photography: riNK Architectural Photography

cile the history of the building to fit the contemporary needs of cunent and future tenants. While a few remnants of the old building remain - columns, ceiling details, a tenazzo staircase - the interior had to be largely gutted. The exterior work had to meet strict federal guidelines to be eligible for historic preservation tax credits. The resulting mixed-use facility includes Class A office space, a 131-room hotel, retail space on the first floor and underground parking.

Jury Comment "This project is recognized to acknowl足 edge the efforts of the developer and architect to bring life back to this part of the city by selective demolition, redevelop足 ment and adaptive reuse ofan important downtown building. Urban revitalization is a challenge in all ofour cities; and this project is a model for foture redevelopmen! in the downtown area. " AlA Wisconsin Design Awards 15
