Congratulations to the 2020 Recipients!

WFCU has awarded eight students with a total of $16,000 in scholarships. Each recipient was awarded $2,000 to apply toward tuition costs for post-secondary education this fall semester.

This year, the award was increased by $1,000 per recipient, made possible by a grant through the Heartland Credit Union Charitable Foundation. Congratulations to each recipient who received a scholarship, as well as applicants.

WFCU began awarding scholarships in 2004. Since that time, 135 students have been awarded a combined total of more than $119,000 in scholarships.

Christi McGrath Member Support Center Manager Christi in Colorado

Christi began her career with WFCU in 2013 and has held various positions. In 2019, she was promoted to Member Support Center Manager. Christi obtained her Bachelor's Degree in Business at Emporia State and went on to begin a career in the financial industry.

Christi grew up in Burden, KS, the youngest of nine children. When she's not at work, she enjoys spending time with her husband, Ilya, and her daughter, Erin. Christi loves bargain shopping and is a self-proclaimed "penny pincher." She loves teaching others about saving money. Christi's favorite getaways are to the mountains and Branson, MO.

When asked why she loves working for WFCU, Christi said: "I love working here for a lot of reasons! In our department, we are able to assist members with a multitude of questions, including debit cards, online banking, loans and all of our other products and services.

We do our very best to provide our members with a "one-stop shopping" type of service, and have as much fun as we can while we do it!

WFCU is a great place to work, AND we have the pleasure of working with the best members!"

We asked Christi what is most rewarding about her position, and she said, "WFCU truly believes in the mission of credit unions - People Helping People. Not just those with 800+ credit scores and high income (although we do help them also) but ALL people. Helping others is my lifelong passion. I love that we help those with not so perfect credit and that we trust they will repay the loan. The best part is that we turn new accounts and loan requests into opportunities to teach ALL of our members how to improve their credit so they can pay us less money in the future! That's what credit unions are about!"

Hello again! In the last few newsletters, I covered 90% of what makes up your credit score.

Let's review:

John Smutny Loan Specialist

 35% Payment History (paying on time)  30% Capacity (revolving credit cards and keeping balances low)  15% Length of Time your accounts have been established  10% Mix of Credit This leaves us with the last 10% which is New Credit

When you open a new account, it takes about 6-8 months to become "established." New credit can have a negative effect on your credit score during the first several months and, when initially reported, can lower your score by 10-20 points or more. Always be mindful before applying for offers you get in a store, online, or in the mail. Opening too many accounts in a short time can drop your score significantly. Don't apply for credit unless you really need to.
