3 Common Credit Myths Good credit is essential if you want to get the best rates when buying your home or a new car. We’re here to bust these three common credit myths to help make your journey to great credit a smooth one!

1. ”Checking my credit report will dramatically lower my credit score.”

What matters is who pulls your credit report and why. When a lender pulls your credit report for a credit application, it will show as a “hard inquiry.” A hard inquiry impacts your credit score by about 5 points. In contrast, if you are checking your credit report yourself from one of the credit bureaus, it will show as a “soft inquiry” and will not affect your credit score.

2. “My income affects my credit score.”

While your income may play a part in whether you can obtain a loan, it doesn’t directly affect your credit score. Your credit score is a tool measuring your likelihood to repay a loan based on the payment history shown in your credit report. With that, your income does not impact your ability to have a great credit score, you just have to borrow responsibly!

3. ”Bad credit is forever.”

We’ve all made mistakes. When it comes to credit, it’s easy to feel like you’re doomed to have a low credit score forever. Thankfully, you can rebuild your credit if you’ve had some mishaps in the past. It takes some time, but with the right amount of dedication and patience, you can build up good pay history and increase your score. At WFCU, we offer FREE personalized credit reviews. Introducing...

Dustin LaRue Consumer Lending Manager

Dustin, Mitzi, and Racy

Dustin began his career with WFCU in January of 2020. He has a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration and many years of experience in the financial industry. He is passionate about helping our members and making a difference in our community. One of Dustin’s greatest accomplishments is earning a Bachelor’s Degree. When he was 25, he decided to go back to school. Shortly after enrolling, he found out his wife was expecting a baby. Dustin said, “We knew it would be difficult, but decided that with a baby on the way, it was even more important to continue my education and build a future for our family.”

to tropical destinations. They recently celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary in St. Lucia We asked Dustin what he loves most about working for WFCU, and this is what he had to say: “I’m lucky to be a part of a talented, motivated, and all-around extraordinary team. They work hard everyday to meet the needs of our members. They also do their best to educate members about how to improve their credit. We don’t just take an application. We listen to our members and try to understand what they have gone through or are going through so that we can do our part to help them improve their personal financial situation. That’s what I love about my job, is helping others meet their financial goals.” Watch for more WFCU team members in upcoming newsletters.
