Reality Store
Preparing kids for real life Gail Van Dreel is making a difference by teaching kids real-life money skills.
Q. A.
Why did you choose to volunteer for the Reality Store?
I wanted to get involved in volunteering, and there were a lot of opportunities, but some I was interested in conflicted with tax season. The Reality Store was right after tax season, so the timing was good, it was a little closer to home, and it just sounded like a neat idea. It seemed like a great way to help kids become knowledgeable about life and the things they need to pay attention to in life.
Q. A.
What have you gained from your volunteer experience?
It’s really gratifying to see the difference you can make in others’ lives. It was satisfying to see the light go on when the kids realized you have to be able to buy a car, buy a house, maybe pay child support, and still have money left over for trips, movies and meals out once in a while.
Q. A.
Will you volunteer for the Reality Store again?
Yes, I will do it again next year. I think more schools should be

organization. Due to time constraints, the Reality Store is my first time officially volunteering.
Q.
Q.
Volunteering in general is very rewarding. But the Reality Store was a lot of fun and a great experience, being able to help the kids learn about pulling all the aspects of life together. I would definitely recommend it.
My daughters, who are 16 and will be juniors in high school this year, were influential. They attend a college prep school, and their counselors encouraged them to start going into the community and volunteering because they’ll need that when they start applying to colleges. So they have been volunteering, and then I started exploring opportunities to volunteer with the WICPA.
What would you tell someone who’s thinking about volunteering?
A.
Q.
How did you first start volunteering with the WICPA?
A.
I initially got involved with the WICPA to benefit my business. We have two firms: a CPA firm and a forensic accounting firm. When I started marketing the forensic accounting firm in Green Bay, it became clear there was not a whole lot of knowledge of what forensic accounting was. So I started attending WICPA events and networking, and then I began recognizing the other ways I could get involved with the
Who first influenced your decision to start volunteering?
A.
Q. A.
What motivates you to stay involved?
I enjoy making a difference. I started my firm to help others, but the workload between two businesses is very demanding, and I’m thinking of selling the CPA firm soon. Once that happens, volunteering will enable me to still have an effect on others but without as much demand on my time.

Corina Schoenke, CPA Partner, Wipfli LLP, Milwaukee
Not-for-Profit Accounting Conference Planning Committee
Giving back and making connections Cori Schoenke believes in giving back. But she’s also made many connections through her work on the Not-for-Profit Accounting Conference Planning Committee.
Q.
How long have you been on the committee, and why did you choose to become involved?
A.
I’ve been on this committee for about five years. Being involved helps to keep Wipfli’s name out there, for one thing. But I also enjoy attending this conference, and it’s rewarding to be involved in planning what will be offered at the conference each year. I’ll definitely be on the committee again next year.
Q. A.
Do you volunteer in your community as well?
Yes, I do. I’m on the Finance Committee of Habitat for Humanity – Milwaukee, and I serve as treasurer of my local church. In the past, I’ve served on the boards of Hope House in Milwaukee and the Waukesha Food Pantry. I also go on a lot of mission trips through my church. We’ve been to the Dominican Republic and other countries in Central America as well as South America. These are building missions, in which we build schools, houses and churches. It’s very rewarding work.
wicpa.org
Q. A.
Why do you feel volunteering is important?
I believe it’s important to give back. My community has provided me the opportunities that I have, and I want to give back to those less fortunate than I am. It’s also fun. In my volunteer work for the WICPA, it’s fun to see the people I’ve come to know through the committee.
Q.
Who or what first influenced your decision to volunteer with the WICPA?
A.
Two people have influenced my involvement. One is a Wipfli partner who was previously on the committee. Because she’s in Eau Claire, it was hard for her to get here for meetings, and she thought I would enjoy being on it, and that’s what got me started. Gail Boerema was also influential. She is also on the committee and is a good friend of mine.
Q.
What have you gained from your volunteer experience with the WICPA?
A.
I’ve gained access to a lot of people that I probably would never have met otherwise. That’s one of the biggest benefits of being involved.
Q.
What would you tell someone who’s thinking about volunteering for the WICPA?
A.
It’s a great way to meet people and make connections. if you just attend some conferences, you probably aren’t going to get to know many people, but once you get involved on a committee, you connect with people. And it’s more fun to go the conferences then, because you see people you know.
Q. A.
What motivates you to stay involved?
Being able to help shape what the conferences will be in the future and the kinds of training we can extend is very motivating. I also enjoy the camaraderie. When I come to the meetings, it’s like coming back to see friends I’ve come to know over the past five or six years. Thank You! 2018

Ethics Committee
Maintaining trusted advisor status Longtime volunteer Barry Sattell finds honor in his work for the Ethics Committee.
Q. A.
How long have you been actively involved in the WICPA?
I’ve served on the Ethics Committee for 15 years, and for the last five I’ve served as committee chair. I served on one of the taxation committees back in the 80s, as well.
Q.
What do you consider the committee’s most valuable contribution?
A.
Giving assurance that we continue to be the most trusted advisor for our clients is very valuable and gratifying. We make sure we give guidance and ensure CPAs follow policies to remain objective and act with integrity in the performance of audits and reviews. We take very seriously our role in evaluating cases that are brought our way.
Q.
How do you feel about the work the committee does and your role in it?
A.
It’s a real honor to be working on the Ethics Committee, to serve as chair and to be working with the AICPA in dealing with the public.
14
Thank You! 2018
While I don’t serve on an AICPA committee, as chair of our committee I attend annual AICPA ethics meetings with other state chairpersons. We go over professional conduct and talk about how to make the review process more efficient to ensure we stay on top of things. I spend an average of 1-1/2 to 2 hours a week on committee work, and it’s very rewarding.
Q. A.
What kinds of cases does the Ethics Committee deal with?
Ethics complaints from the public are usually referred to the Department of Licensing in Madison. But during tax season, we get calls from CPA firms complaining that other CPAs are behaving badly; for example, not turning over documents required for client tax returns. This can happen when a client leaves one firm and goes to another. Usually a phone call from me will be enough to resolve the issue. Cases also come down from the AICPA, and we have to decide if the CPAs and firms involved should have additional education, be suspended or terminated for violations. Termination
is rare, but firms can be suspended from performing audits and reviews and have to appear before the Board of Accountancy. Many times we have to look into a lack of independence, which is a significant violation.
Q.
How important is it for WICPA members to volunteer in support of the profession?
A.
I’ve always tried to teach our team that giving back is very important. Part of our mission statement talks about being individually and collectively outstanding members of the community, and volunteering with the WICPA or AICPA is a component of that goal.
Q. A.
What motivates you to stay involved?
I know that I’m doing the best thing I can do to help keep the profession on track so we continue to be seen as the most trusted advisor for businesses and individuals.

Tim Ryan, CPA
Executive Vice President & CFO, Monona State Bank, Madison
Excellence Awards Selection Committee
Sharing time, talent and treasure Tim Ryan finds personal and professional value in giving back.
Q. A.
How long have you been actively involved in the WICPA?
I’ve been volunteering on committees for the WICPA since the early 2000s. I served on the Financial Institutions Task Force for three years, including as chairman the last year, and this is my second year on the Excellence Awards Selection Committee.
Q.
On average, about how much time does your work with the committee involve?
A.
My work with the selection committee really involves only several hours of my time per year. We meet once a year for about two hours to select the award winners and, beforehand, I spend about four hours preparing.
Q.
What do you see as the significance of the committee’s work?
A.
For me, it’s recognizing CPAs who have worked to make the profession better. I think we should reward those who are actively giving back, and I find it very gratifying to be part of that.

Q.
Q.
I think the networking opportunities you have when you volunteer in any capacity are really valuable. From a rewarding standpoint, the Excellence Award winners are always appreciative of being recognized, and that feels good. With the Financial Institutions Task Force, putting together a meaningful conference to help CPAs do their jobs better was very rewarding.
Just do it. Find something you feel passionate about. We all have time, talent and treasure that we can give. You have more or less of it at different points in your career. And when you do give back, you often get more than you give. For one thing, networking always provides opportunities to find mentors. Finding a mentor can be a difficult process, but with the right networking, you can usually find someone to lend a hand or give a piece of advice.
What has been your most rewarding experience as a volunteer for the WICPA?
A.
Q.
How important is it for members to contribute their time and expertise in support of the profession?
A.
I believe everyone should give back, no matter your place in life or where you are in your career. It’s really important for each of us to do that, and there is great personal and professional value in doing so.
What would you tell a young professional who’s thinking about volunteering for the WICPA?
A.
Q. A.
What motivates you to stay involved?
What motivates me is knowing that so many people before me came along and worked hard to make our organization strong. I believe it’s our responsibility to keep that going forward.

INVALUABLE CONTRIBUTIONS The important work of WICPA committees and why you should get involved by Marcia Tillett-Zinzow

olunteering your time and expertise on a WICPA committee is a great way to support the profession, build leadership skills and connect with like-minded peers. Read on to explore a sampler of WICPA committees and their accomplishments during 2017-2018. Once you discover these rewarding activities, you may decide to volunteer your own time and expertise.
Helping fill the pipeline The Accounting Careers Committee had a busy year in 2017– 2018, with activities that will help fill the future talent pipeline. Christopher M. Cholka, CPA, senior accountant for Cousins Submarines Inc. and a dedicated WICPA volunteer, said committee members worked together to review and update one PowerPoint presentation and lay the groundwork for creating another two PowerPoints. “These tools will make the role of speaker easier for WICPA members who volunteer to go into the schools to inform students about the CPA profession and possibly spark their interest in pursuing a career in accounting or finance,” he said. Cholka also reported committee members’ participation in the High School Educator Accounting Symposium and Junior Achievement, as well as volunteering their time speaking to high school students; writing for the WICPA’s

student publication, CPA2b; and reading to elementary school kids during the Reading Makes Cents program. In addition, the committee joined forces with the Young Professionals Committee and visited college campuses to promote the advantages of obtaining the CPA credential.
Sharing insights with college students In addition to collaborating with the Accounting Careers Committee, the Young Professionals Committee participated in a focus group coordinated by the WICPA and moderated by an outside consultant. The intent was to have young professionals in the field share with college accounting students their insights about the profession, tips on

One key aspect of the new law is the establishment of new educational requirements to sit for the CPA Exam and become certified. According to WICPA Board Chair Michael D. Akers, CPA, CFE, CIA, CMA, CGMA, CBM, PhD, the educational requirements are rigorous yet allow each accounting program to develop a curriculum that best meets their institution’s goals. Akers is the Charles T. Horngren Professor of Accounting and former chair of the Accounting Department at Marquette University School of Business. He is proud of the collaborative efforts that led to this achievement. “I believe this grassroots effort created the most engagement between academics and the professional community that I have ever seen in my 30 years of teaching,” he said.
employer expectations and general career advice. The results of the focus group were incorporated into college presentations and published in both the Spring and Fall 2018 issues of CPA2b, the WICPA’s magazine targeted to college accounting students and distributed to educators and students throughout the state. “Participating in the YP focus group was a rewarding experience because it felt like we were giving back to the next generation of accounting professionals,” said Andrew D. Faust, CPA, committee member and a partner at Simply Balanced Accounting in Milwaukee. “Our group had a diverse background and a wealth of knowledge to share, and I'm sure our insights hit home with any students they reached,” Faust said.
Protecting the Wisconsin business environment Members of the WICPA Wisconsin Taxation Committee represent Wisconsin CPAs and businesses on various state taxation-related issues. The committee has diligently worked alongside the Department of Revenue (DOR) and key Wisconsin legislators to promote the values of the public interest and further shape the landscape for Wisconsin taxpayers. Committee Chair Sarah Evans, CPA, state and local tax manager at Schenck, is proud of the work the committee has done and applauds the members who unselfishly volunteer their time. “Over the past year, this committee has provided input on various proposed rule changes impacting Wisconsin taxpayers, including meeting with the DOR and testifying to members of the State Legislature on key issues to help Wisconsin continue to be an attractive place for businesses,” she said.
Advocating for the profession Volunteering your time as an advocate for the CPA profession and the public trust it guards can be both exciting and rewarding. Important legislation was passed last year as a result of collaboration between the Public Policy and Accounting Higher Education committees. Grassroots efforts on the part of the WICPA and these committees succeeded in passage of Wisconsin 2017 Act 88, the new law that requires continuing professional development for CPA license renewal.
wicpa.org
The activities described above are evidence that WICPA committees are leading the way in advocating for the profession, laying the groundwork for laws that help protect businesses and individual taxpayers, making a difference in others’ lives and helping to ensure the future of the profession. And in the process, committee members are building skills, professional networks and personal friendships. Marcia Tillett-Zinzow is a Wisconsin freelance writer and editor.
