Reardon has benefited from surrounding himself with like-minded professionals who are deeply committed to their clients and profession. This has motivated him to remain involved in the organization and committee. Communicating complex ideas in simplistic terms has always been one of his strengths. After sitting through several tax meetings, Reardon learned from a WICPA member about the need for more technical financial planning continuing professional education workshops to help address growing client needs. As a result, Reardon created a series of financial planning workshops for members and uses his communication skills to bring technical financial planning knowledge into the CPAs’ day-to-day client conversations. “It’s great to be able to give back to an organization that has helped me better serve our clients,” he said. wicpa.org

The Young Professionals Committee creates programming and events geared toward attracting and retaining young professionals to the WICPA and the profession and serving its members. “Between the committee meetings, event planning and the events themselves, there is never a dull moment,” said Schultz, accounting manager at Advanced Pain Management, LLC in Greenfield. Schultz’s involvement with the WICPA first began through the encouragement of her employer out of college, RitzHolman CPAs in Milwaukee. The firm’s encouragement to its employers to become engaged in the profession and the community energized her to volunteer with the WICPA. After attending many committee events, Schultz decided the Young Professionals Committee was the right fit. She credits her involvement with the committee to Greta C. Diercks, a former co-worker at RitzHolman CPAs, whose passion toward the committee was contagious. Today, Schultz is the Young Professionals Committee chair. As a team, the committee finds ways to be creative with WICPA events and draw members back every year. Through these events, she has made many lasting relationships and is extremely thankful for the opportunities she’s had because of the WICPA.

“Between the committee meetings, event planning and the events themselves, there is never a dull moment.” Schultz encourages other members to get involved. “Stop thinking about volunteering, and contact the WICPA now!” she said. “There are so many volunteer opportunities with the WICPA that it doesn’t matter what areas you are interested in or how much time you have to give. They have something that will be a perfect fit for you.” After attending the WICPA New CPA Welcome Dinner a few years ago, she met several women who were in attendance supporting a co-worker being honored at the event. “We had a great conversation about the CPA Exam, the profession and the WICPA,” she said. “I shared with them my experience with the WICPA and how rewarding it is to volunteer and stay involved in the profession.” Within a couple weeks of their conversation, the women joined the Young Professionals Committee, and they continue to be actively involved.

or Menomonee Falls High School (MFHS) business teacher Sara Burling, volunteering with the WICPA started with an invitation to the High School Educators Symposium. Burling attended the first symposium in 2002 and hasn’t missed one since. “Each year they focus on a different industry,” she said. “It’s an opportunity to learn about different accounting experiences and to network with college professors and other high school teachers.”
“WICPA has done so much for me,” she said. “It’s rewarding to share with students what the real world of accounting is like. School districts with tight budgets wouldn’t be able to provide those experiences if it weren’t for generous grants and active support from WICPA (and its Educational Foundation).” For WICPA member Rebekah Shull, volunteering comes naturally. “My mother and grandmother were active volunteers, so I’m always looking for ways to serve,” said Shull, a lead accounting associate at Chortek LLP. This past school year, Shull collaborated with Burling to design a mock audit for Burling’s students. The project included an opportunity for the students to present their work at the firm. Burling frequently invites WICPA speakers to her classroom. This year, she took on a bigger challenge, collaborating with Julie Schroeder, Rebekah Shull and other professionals from Chortek LLP to design a mock auditing experience for her students. Burling said the benefits of volunteering flow both ways.

Shull, one of Burling’s former students, related well to the students. “I remember trying to make the decisions they will be making,” Shull said. “There is no downside to reaching out to schools. You are providing students with a foundation for accounting, and it feels good to help the kids.” WICPA member Julie Schroeder, a principal at Chortek, coordinates recruiting and student activities at the firm. Schroeder strongly believes in giving back to the community, and the MFHS project was her first direct experience volunteering with WICPA.
She was excited to provide support for developing the case study, reviewing the materials and setting up a Q&A session. She engaged with students throughout the day, encouraging them to explore all areas of the accounting profession. “It was so rewarding,” she said. “It’s really encouraging to meet with students who are interested in accounting, to give them real-life examples of how to progress in their career.” Schroeder said everyone at her firm who participated enjoyed the event and all plan to participate again next year. “It’s important that we encourage and support our next generation of CPAs,” she said. I truly enjoyed the time I spent interacting with the students and sharing my accounting experiences with them. It was a great reminder of the endless possibilities that the accounting profession provides. There is an option available for nearly every type of person and personality.” Megan E. Schultz
“I presented to the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Beta Alpha Psi group about becoming a CPA and the benefits of obtaining the CPA license. It’s rewarding to speak to students about the accounting profession, and I enjoyed the opportunity to go with the WICPA on this visit. “I have spoken at approximately 30 different high school and college events, and each time it is a unique and exciting experience for me. When first talking to the students, I always ask where they feel a career in accounting would lead them, and most of the time they see themselves doing taxes, bookkeeping or just ‘working with numbers.’ It is always great to open up their minds, as they are starting to think about their careers and to be able to explain to them the various opportunities that a career in accounting can offer and the many paths that it can ultimately take them down.” Todd Rakowski

Net gain Shannon M. Zur pays it forward through Reading Makes Cents By Carol Rybak
E
very April for a few hours, Shannon M. Zur, director of Vogel Consulting Group in Waukesha, looks forward to impacting nearly 70 grade school students by reading a money-themed book and having a conversation about money. Zur has participated in the WICPA’s financial literacy program, Reading Makes Cents, for the past six years at Beautiful Savior Lutheran School in Waukesha, where her fourth- and seventh-grade sons attend. She has been a WICPA member since 1998. “I’ve always been encouraged and taught by my parents to volunteer. There is a real lack of financial literacy among kids, so being able to visit schools and get that message across is very valuable,” Zur said. “The biggest thing I emphasize to students when talking about money is they have choices, and when you have choices, you want to make well thought-out, educated choices. It is fundamental to acquire those skills.” Zur feels so passionately about the program that she reads to all combined grade levels during her visit, from kindergarten to sixth grade. “Most books incorporate comedy,” she said. “A lot of times when there’s something funny, the comedy brings down the students’ guard and puts you on the same playing field. It reminds them of their grandparents, parents or whoever reads to them and puts them wicpa.org
Photo by Janet McMillan Shannon M. Zur read “Start Saving, Henry!” to kindergartners at Beautiful Savior Lutheran School in Waukesha on April 29. Zur and other WICPA members read money-themed books to nearly 1,400 Wisconsin elementary students through a financial literacy program called Reading Makes Cents held each April.
“It’s a minimal time commitment, easy and fun, but the impact can be huge.” in a safe spot so they are willing to think about the lesson of the story and talk about it.” Zur also goes the extra mile to communicate with teachers to see if she can combine a story with the students’ current curriculum. For example, when a class was learning about Benjamin Franklin in history, she did research on currency in that era and explained why we have dollars and coins. Similarly when her son was in third grade, he read a book where the two main characters ran away to New York City in the 1950s. There was
a chapter where the characters had to ration their allowance. Zur read the chapter with the class, and they discussed inflation and how prices increase over time. For members thinking about volunteering, Zur encourages them to try it out. “It’s a minimal time commitment, easy and fun, but the impact can be huge,” she said. “You could say something that sticks with students for the rest of their life, or you could simply help them make smarter choices which will make society as a whole better.” Thank You! 2016

“It’s great that the WICPA supports financial literacy events like Reality Stores and Reality Checks. I enjoy volunteering my time to help high school students understand real life money scenarios. There is clear evidence that high school students need this experience and more. The students were allowed to use the debit card concept while also needing to write checks. However, many were unable to write a check or maintain a check register. Technology has caused many students to skip the financial basics.”

ccounting professionals are known for being good with numbers. And just as many of them have a way with words. Such is the case with Stephanie J. Geurts, a partner at Suttner Accounting, Inc. in Oshkosh. Geurts, a WICPA member since 2001, began writing for On Balance about four years ago. Geurts’ interest to write for the magazine was spurred by a desire to learn more about the WICPA. Since penning her first article, she’s written about various topics including QuickBooks tips for small businesses, effective communication skills and setting fraud standards for federal contractors.

Writing for the magazine ignites her passion for researching, writing and learning.
She also attended the On Balance magazine editorial planning meeting. The annual meeting is an opportunity for members to critique content published in the magazine.
“My clients’ needs inspire topics and ideas for articles, whether it’s about technology or accounting regulations,” she said. “If my clients are having specific issues, maybe other people’s clients are having those same issues.”
Members are also encouraged to share issues and trends affecting their clients and business and the accounting profession. Their feedback is used to help plan the magazine’s editorial calendar for the coming year.
Geurts’ involvement with the WICPA is supported by the partners at her firm.
Geurts spends several hours throughout the year writing articles for the magazine.
“All of the CPAs on our staff are members of the WICPA and the AICPA (American Institute of Certified Public Accountants) as well,” she said. “We use the WICPA as a resource for (continuing professional education) for wicpa.org

She served on the WICPA Nonprofit & Healthcare Financial Conference Task Force for five years, while Heindel is currently serving his eighth year on the Task Force, five of which he was chair.
He also serves on the WICPA Educational Foundation and its Accounting Career Awareness Grant Selection and Investment subcommittees. “I enjoy educating others about the accounting profession and adding value in the form of support and training,” Horning said. “Through the YES program, I hope to provide interns a base knowledge of how an accounting department runs and the administrative tasks that keep a business organized.” The YES program gives minority high school students a career-enhancing experience that offers academic and professional development to prepare them for business careers. When asked why he volunteers, Heindel said: “I’ve always emphasized the importance of giving back to the profession and the community. “My journey with the WICPA began 10 years ago with my first job as a professional accountant out of college. I joined the Young Professionals Committee as vice chair. I spent several years on the committee organizing all kinds of events for young professionals like myself. Eventually I had to move on, but continued working with the WICPA by participating on other committees such as the Excellence Awards Selection Committee, Membership Advisory Committee and a host of other requests made by the outstanding staff of the WICPA. The opportunities provided were a big part of a platform to a professional career. Lucas A. Rocole

“WICPA membership has benefited me greatly over the last 25 years. I started my firm in 1994 and joined the WICPA’s Southeastern Chapter and the Waukesha Practitioners’ Group. I was able to integrate with large and small firms. I learned from everyone and developed a successful practice. The success was due in part to the WICPA providing workshops, networking events and putting CPAs together. I appreciate all the association has done for me.” Frederick J. Sitzberger

“Contributing to the WICPA Educational Foundation is a great way to give back to the profession and show students that having the CPA credential will open many doors. Encouraging future generations of accounting students and teachers is a way to show others that accounting is a rewarding career and you can have a positive impact on the world. It’s also a thoughtful way to honor a favorite accounting professor or colleague that helped you go into accounting, become a CPA, was a mentor or influenced your career path.”
