Fun Fish Facts -
•
Goldfish are descendants of carp and have their origins in China.
•
There are hundreds of varieties of goldfish found around the world.
•
Goldfish have teeth in their throat – called ‘pharyngeal teeth’ – which are used to help them crush their food.
•
Goldfish may grow as long as 23 inches and weigh nearly 7 pounds, although this is rare.
•
Goldfish do not have stomachs. Different parts of their intestines do the job of breaking down food and absorbing nutrients.
•
Goldfish can live up to 30 years - longer than most other aquarium fish.
•
In the 18th century, members of the European aristocracy would remove goldfish from their ponds and place them into decorative bowls for special occasions.
•
A goldfish cannot be reliably sexed until they are at least 1 year of age.
•
It is easiest to identify the distinguishing features between male and female goldfish during the breeding season. At that time, males develop white, pimple-like spots on their gills. The females’ abdomen becomes enlarged. Another distinguishing feature is the
size and shape of the vent located near the anal fin. A male’s vent tends to be narrow, concave and more oval. A female’s vent is more convex and round. •
Goldfish courtship can create quite a splash in your aquarium! Once the female reaches sexual maturation, she begins to release pheromones. This triggers the male to begin his pursuit by chasing the female around and poking at her stomach. This behaviour is often confused with fighting and can become quite aggressive. The male is trying to get the female to release her eggs which are held in the abdomen. It is best to have a planted area in the tank for her to lay her eggs. The female lays up to 500 eggs at a time. Once the eggs are released, the male fertilizes them. Goldfish will eat their own eggs, so it is best to remove them and place them in a different tank.
•
Contrary to popular belief, the goldfish memory span is far beyond three seconds. Goldfish have the capacity to learn and adopt patterns of behaviour. Yup, this means you can train your goldfish!
•
A school of fish is known as a ‘troubling’.
•
Goldfish do not blink…because they have no eyelids! And yes, this means they sleep with their eyes open. 4

Travelling with your Cat Travelling with your feline friend can be an interesting task Cats as we know, can be more sensitive to change than their canine companions and as such special attention needs to be given to their needs and health whilst being relocated. We don’t recommend travelling long distance by road for cats if you can avoid it, long trips in a vehicle can add to motion sickness and increase stress levels in an already stressed cat. If you do need to make the trip by road, ensure you have water bowls securely attached to the travel container as well as a funnel and water bottle to top the water bowl up. The travel container must be fully secure and well ventilated for travel, when you do stops at service stations on route, do not take the container out the car as this will only add to travel stress, rather just check on kitty and top up water. Under no circumstance should you ever remove a travelling cat from his/her container unless in a fully secure, gated area. Travelling by aircraft is highly recommended for relocation of cats, this mode of transport is quicker and kinder for sensitive animals who need their relocation
to happen swiftly. Only a fully IATA specified container should be used for air travel, water bowls securely fastened and your cats favourite blanket from home inside the travel container will add to a smooth happy flight. PETport will provide personal name tags for the container so airline staff can refer to your cat by name, this all helps in reducing anxiety during travel. Under no circumstance should you ever sedate or tranquillise a cat for travel, especially air travel. This lowers the heart-rate and with altitude to contend with the effects may be fatal. A fully IATA specified container is imperative to ensure the cat does manage to escape during travel, there are many containers on the market that cannot be used for air travel for this specific reason. We recommend that cats are locked in a secure room with a litter tray before we arrive to collect them as cats have an acute sixth sense of knowing that there is a major change about to happen and will very often “take off” to avoid the confusion, this is the last thing that is needed for a family that is already experiencing the stress of moving home. Q&A
with Phillip
Ask our Expert to solve your Animal Related Dilemmas. Forward your Queries and questions to Philip: ostlersinn@polka.co.za and we will endeavour to answer them. The following Query was received from a No- Kill policy, Rescue and Re-home Dog Sanctuary
Q Hi there
One of our dogs that had been adopted, jumped over the wall into the neighbours garden and killed his 2 rabbits. :( What are the legal implications for the family and this boy ? :( We have him back at the centre at the moment as he (the owner) is trying to make the wall higher for him. Thanks for caring,
A The Municipal By- Laws are very specific in an instance such as this; the owner of a dog must ensure that their property is enclosed in such a manner as to prevent the escape of the dog, and ensure that the dog does not cause any nuisance or loss to any other person. Although neither deliberate nor negligent, the owner of the dog is in contravention of the By- Laws as, even with them not ever having anticipated a situation such as this to arise, and also with your Organisation having gone so far as to have approved the premises and the fencing at the place that the dog was homed to as being adequate, the dog still managed to escape and cause a loss to the neighbour. It is imperative that the dog NEVER has the opportunity to scale the wall again- under South African Law any Stray (as in an animal outside the boundaries of it’s own property) dog which enters the premises of another person and attacks or kills any other animal or Livestock belonging to that person is termed “Marauding,“ and as such may be killed should the dog be caught in the act of attacking or killing their animals. Animals, under South African are termed “Property, “ and every person has the right to protect their own property from a marauding animal, including putting it to death as long as it is carried out in a Humane manner (which it obviously would not be in many instances!) Should this dog, which has now discovered the thrill of ‘hunting’ next door ever manage to get into their property again, it could be killed if the property owner feels that in his opinion the dog has returned and is causing him further losses or damage to his property.
Sadly there is very little recourse for your owner of the dog in this instance- albeit totally unexpected and unprecedented it was his dog that left his premises and caused damage on his neighbour’s property. The neighbour on the other hand suffered the disturbing death of what probably were much loved pets which he had reason to believe were safe and protected on his own property. There could be small children involved, who also could be traumatised at having their beloved bunnies despatched in such a gruesome manner. Under the circumstances I would advise the owner of the dog to approach the owners of the rabbits in a neighbourly manner, apologise profusely and possibly offer to either replace the rabbits or compensate the neighbour for the loss of his rabbits. I would stress the fact that measures are underway to elevate the perimeter wall to avoid any future disaster of this magnitude, and that the dog will remain kennelled in the interim to prevent any recurrence or incident prior to the heightening of the walls. Possibly suggest that strands of electrified fencing be placed up the wall on the inside of the dog owners property, to teach the dog to stay away from the wall and not try to get over it again. It is hoped that the neighbour is a considerate animal lover who will understand that the situation was very unfortunate as well as unprecedented, and that every effort is being made to prevent it ever recurring. We hope that they will allow the dog and his owner a second chance. Alternately, as sad and distressing as it may be, if the neighbour is adamant, it may be necessary to consider re-homing the dog to a more secure property, for his own safety. Best regards, Phillip.

FAST FACTS About The Blue and Gold
MACAW •
The Blue and Gold Macaw is a type of Parrot
•
They are also called the blue and yellow macaw
•
The wings and tail are blue, while the under parts are yellow. It also has a green forehead, a white face, and a black beak.
•
It can have a body length up to 90cm (including tail feathers) and a wing span of up to 1.2m
•
It naturally comes from the rainforests of South America, where they live in large groups together (like 100 in one colony)
•
They are one of the more talkative macaws, but macaws in general make a lot of loud screeching noises, so if you get one as a pet, be ready for some noise.
•
They eat a wide variety of stuff like seeds, fruits, nuts, leaves, and flowers. At the same time, lot of foods are poisonous to them such as chocolate, cherries, avocado, and caffeine. Some macaws also eat clay, which some think might help to neutralize the poisons in some foods.
•
If properly taken care of, the Blue and Gold Macaw can make a great pet. It is considered to be one of the most trainable and intelligent parrots. They like to spend time with people and need to be trained and socialized. With work they can be a great pet.
•
The Blue and Gold Macaw is not endangered, and its conservation status is listed as “least concerned”, which is good
•
They can live up to 80 years old.
•
Baby macaws stay with their parents for around one year, unless they are hand reared by humans
•
We currently have hand-reared, tame blue and gold macaws for R 9500 each by West Rand Pet & Bird Farm

PET & BIRD FARM
Westrand Pet and Bird Farm is the biggest pet shop on the Westrand specialising in birds and Parrots. They also offer a huge variety of fish and reptiles. The shop has been around for over 20 years and is managed by brothers, Garry and Jeandre Saunders whom took ownership of it this year in January. Many breeders purchase birds from them as they have almost any bird available on the pet market. The business was greatly criticized in the media last year because of the way the animals were being treated. The SPCA was not happy with the situation and confiscated over 30 animals in a single day. Since the Saunders brothers have taken over, they have been focusing on making sure that all animals are treated well, as well as educating the public on how to look after their pets properly. They believe that looking after animals properly are our responsibilities as humans and we that we need to treat animals in the same manner that we want to be treated. They have been working hard on re-branding the business and turning it back into a big contributor to the community, as any business should do. They had their opening day on the 27th of September this year which was a great success. On that day they not only promoted the business but also supported The Rhino Walk Cause by Francois Myberg. They aim to give the best price to the customer and to make pet and animal care affordable for everyone. They also offer free wing clipping, beak filling and nail clipping to their customers any day of the week. They have a room dedicated to hand rearing parrots and parakeets, such as budgies, cockatiels, and african greys, so that they are already tame. Please feel free to contact them at any time, their details can be found on the banner below. By Pets and Vets Galore Magazine

The South African BOERBOEL Breed history
T
he word “Boerboel” derives from “boer”, the Afrikaans/Dutch word for “farmer”. The English word “bull” sounds to Dutch ears like “boel”, hence, the name Boerboel. Boerboel, therefore, translates as either “farmer’s dog” or “Boer’s dog” and should be pronounced somewhat like “burbull”. The Boerboel is the only South African dog breed created to defend the homestead. Despite the Boerboel’s long breeding history, there is great uncertainty as to how many and which breeds were used to create it. It is generally believed that the breed was created from interbreeding native African canine species with breeds brought into South Africa from Dutch, French, and British settlers. The most likely origins are claimed to date back to Jan van Riebeeck’s arrival to the Cape in 1652. Van Riebeeck brought a “Bullenbijter” with him. Those with him, and later European settlers, also had large, strong dogs, that almost certainly bred with the indigenous, domestic dog breeds of South Africa Later, in 1928, the diamond mining company De Beers imported Bullmastiffs to South Africa to guard the mines. This breed was also crossbred with Boerboels in the region.
Boerboels today
The Boerboel Breeders Association was established in 1983 in the Senekal district of the Free State with the sole objective of ennobling and promoting the Boerboel as a unique South African dog breed. Today, Boerboel breeding is both a hobby and an industry in South Africa. These dogs are now exported from South Africa to other parts of the world. The protective character of the Boerboel is still evident and is much sought after, as is the calm, stable, and confident composure of the breed. The dogs are obedient and intelligent and have strong territorial instincts. The Boerboel remains the guarding breed of choice amongst current day farmers and is very popular for the same reason in urban communities. The name boerboel is commonly misspelled as boerbul, boerbull, and borbull. In 2010, the Boerboel was banned in Denmark for being branded a fighting dog.
There is also a divergence of standards. The Kennel Union of South Africa does not accept the black coat, but the SABT does, so a buyer needs to decide what standard to follow, as if a dog has a black coat they cannot be registered with AKC, KUSA, BI or Ebbasa.
Appearance
The Boerboel is a large dog, with a strong bone structure and well developed muscles. The head appears blocky, but not overdone. It should look impressive, carrying himself with confidence and powerful movement, which should be buoyant, and unencumbered, despite its size. It should be symmetrical and balanced, following the desired proportions for the breed. Males should be markedly bigger than females, there is a distinct sexual dimorphism between the sexes, with the female less prominently developed.
Coat
The Boerboel is an average shedder and easy to groom. The occasional brushing and a monthly bath and nail trim is all that is needed. The breed has an outer coat that is normally coarse and straight, and an undercoat that is soft and dense. Its coat is short, dense, smooth, soft, and shiny. Their coat colour can be various shades of red, brown, or fawn. Many dogs have a black mask around their mouth that sometimes extends to their eyes and ears. The Breed Standard colours for the Boerboel is Fawn, Light Fawn, Red all colours of red and Brindle
Temperament
Boerboels are an intelligent and energetic breed. They are loyal, great with kids and tend to be protective of their family and territory. They are quite charming when not being lazy, and will not hesitate to defend their loved ones to the death. The Boerboel also requires training and firm handling from an early age.
Health
Boerboels are generally known for their good health. However, Boerboels can suffer from hip or elbow dysplasia, vaginal hyperplasia, ectropion, andentropion. Recently, juvenile epilepsy (with attacks brought on by metabolic changes or stress) has appeared in the boerboel breed. The average life expectancy is ten years.

They are ideal family dogs who love to be a part of a family, though they are a very busy breed who need mental stimulation.
The Club The Highveld Belgian Shepherd dog club is a KUSA registered club that looks out for the best interest of the breed in South Africa. The club chairman is Roy Clark. The club can be found on the web at www.belshep.co.za . They host a number of different events in the year consisting of Breed shows, Obedience, agility, dog jumping and carting.
Events
The Highveld Belgian Shepherd Dog Club is also hosting the KUSA IPO Meisterschaft which is the largest KUSA IPO competition hosted once a year. The event hosts both international judges and helpers and gets entries from all over South Africa. The event will be hosted on the 14-15-16 November 2014 at the Brakpan Sport Stadium. IPO is a dog sport open to a number of different breeds of dogs ie. Belgian Shepherds, German Shepherds, Dobermans, Rottweiler’s, Bouviers, Boxers and more, that is made up of 3 different disciplines. Tracking which requires the dog to follow a path laded out by a stranger and find all the articles left on the track. Obedience which requires the dog and handler team to display a set layout patter of obedience which includes the dog having to retrieve a dumb bell of a set weight on the flat as well as over a 1m jump and a 1.8m scaling wall. And also to be sent away from the handler and to stop when instructed. The last discipline is the protection work where the dog is required to apprehend a assailant as well as display obedience to the handler when instructed to do so. The event is open to all spectators and makes for a wonderful day out for the whole family, so come down and join us for the event and have the opportunity to see some of South Africa’s working dogs.
