Moving household is a stressful time, moving with pets is even more stressful. When deciding to relocate with your pet, it is advisable to make arrangements well in advance. Many countries have reviewed their quarantine for pets entering from South Africa, so do check with your pet travel consultant on quarantine requirements for your pets entry to your new country of residence. Most countries have regulations on the importation of animals with very specific timescales attached to them. It is highly recommended for the client to work closely with the Relocation Specialist and veterinarian to avert and avoid any potential problems that may arise when relocating pets. Choose to work with consultants who are specialised shippers and will offer a personalised service. A specialised transport company should assist with all documentation, SARS clearances, air-freighting, State Vet Clearances, travel containers pertaining to exporting / importing animals. PETport prepares all Veterinary Health Clearances on behalf of the signing Veterinarian thus ensuring the correct prescribed Health Clearance is submitted for Government endorsement.
When moving domestically, it is recommended that pets are collected from his/her home at least a day before packing starts. The travelling pet may well become very stressed as he/she sees the house contents being packed, cats have been known to “take a walk” for a few days when the packing process starts. Vaccinations for domestic travel will soon become mandatory and for some airlines already are mandatory. Encourage clients to have vaccinations older than 30 days and less than 12 months (regardless of the manufactures suggested validity) PETport specialise in export, import, transit and domestic relocation of domestic pets including birds, exotics, fish and wildlife. We will provide a range of costing that will suit your budget and needs, thus ensuring the family pets are safely and securely transported Submitted by Hazel Imrie of PETport South Africa +27 (0) 11 965 6397 • www.petport.co.za • info@petport.co.za

The Neapolitan Mastiff D
espite the beastly and vicious appearance, the Neapolitan Mastiff is a peaceful and steady dog. It is serious, calm and quiet, unless provoked. It is muscular, with a massive head and wrinkled face. The loose connective tissue on the head, dew lap and body, protects the Neo from attacks. If an enemy were to pull or bite at the flesh, the protective skin would stretch, leaving the vital parts unhurt. Strangers should beware. Never walk straight towards an unknown Neo. The breed sleeps a lot, but can get on its feet incredibly fast. The Neo has a loose, rolling, cat-like gait.
The Neapolitan Mastiff is a guard dog and defence dog par excellence, of great size, powerful and strongly built, of tough yet majestic appearance, sturdy and courageous, of intelligent expression, endowed with correct mental balance and docile character. It is highly protective and fearless, but affectionate and devoted to its family and family’s friends. The average life-span is eight to ten years. The body is thick, with powerful feet and strong claws. The dog’s bodies are heavy, so they are big enough to bring down a man or other beast. They are meant to carry out their work from close quarters and do not need to run far. They are not dogs bred for running. They are actually bred so that they will not run away. The Neo is the messiest of eaters. His copious flews and large lips scatter food in all directions and are great hiding places for snacks long after the meal is over. Another endearing habit of the Neo, is snoring. A sound-asleep Neapolitan will be heard from quite a distance. Being with their owner means more to them than anything, and doors are only a small encumbrance to a Neo who wants to be with his family. They are incredibly desirous of companionship. They do their work very well by their astute sense of smell which informs them who is coming. This sentence sums up what every owner of Neapolitans has observed – most of them do not see very well. They appear to be nearsighted. Many do not recognize a person until they smell that person, or see the person up very close. And if a person persists in approaching, they violently attack. This is their nature. They need early socialization to become accustomed to different people, places and things. We believe Neapolitan Mastiffs make great companions for those adults who are animal orientated and can control as well as care for a very powerful animal whose basic instincts are to guard, defend and attack if necessary.
Most Neapolitans are fond of their human children and would not purposely hurt them, but, because of their large size, they could knock over a small child and step on them per accident. Most Neapolitans are very gentle with children and will probably only drool on a kid. Children are very excitable and they love to run and yell. This might cause most dogs to become excited as well. They should never be unsupervised around very small children, and children must handle a Neo with respect. Neapolitans by nature are dominant alpha dogs and must be handled accordingly. It is important that every member in the family, including the children must outrank the Neapolitan in pack member status. They are relatively inactive indoors and a small yard will do. They need dry, soft bedding to prevent pressure markings, although, they always prefer a cold hard surface to sleep on in the summer. In warm weather they need a lot of shade and fresh water. Normally they do not need to have high fencing to keep them inside, as they are not likely to jump. Neo’s seems to do well when kept in the house, only wanting to go out for some occasional exercise or drink of water, but tend to want to be in the house with his adoring family, sleeping at your feet or sitting next to you. The Neapolitan is not the best selection of a dog for athletic ability and endurance, but most of them love to swim and this is a good form of exercise. Don’t let young puppies run and play too much. Limit its exercise and avoid rough playing. Adult Neo’s could be taken on a long walk once a day. If your lifestyle includes hiking, jogging or cycling, and you want your dog to accompany you need to choose another breed. People must only buy from reputable breeders with intensive breed knowledge, as this is a very specialized breed and the new owner will definitely need assistance with various issues. This is a fighting breed, and there for you need to be careful with introducing other breeds with your Neo.

Your Pet’s Behaviour
BehaviVet Consultancy Dr Frédérique Hurly
by Dr Hurley
Assisting in understanding pet’s behaviour!
B
ehaviour problems can severely damage the human-animal bond, this can lead to abandonment or euthanasia of a healthy pet. More pets are euthanized for behavioural reasons than all other medical causes combined. The most common behaviours that cause problems for pet owners are aggression, inappropriate elimination and destruction of personal property in dogs, and house soiling and aggression in cats. For many pet owners inappropriate behaviour by their pet causes huge frustration. Eventually the owners discard the pet because they cannot deal with the situation any longer. There are several reasons why behaviour problems develop. People often make a mistake by choosing an inappropriate pet for the wrong reason or owners may not be prepared for the responsibilities involved in owning of a pet. Many pets are bought through ‘impulse buying’, without owners having done their homework on the temperament, behavioural qualities and physical demands of the breed they have chosen. Many pets do not go to puppy school or receive any form of training at all. Due to our modern life style, pets are left alone all day, and this may frustrate the pet. Some owners are also simply not aware of how they should treat and manage their pet or may inadvertently cause or reinforce unwanted behaviours. The ultimate temperament and behaviour of an animal is determined by two factors. Firstly, there is the genetic influence. Through selective breeding specific breeds have certain characteristics. These animals are thus prone to show these behaviours (the digging Dachshund or the protective Rottweiler). This is called the nature of the animal. However, environmental influences shape this behaviour, and play a big role in the final temperament and behaviour of the dog. This means that previous experiences like training and interaction with people or other animals (especially at a young age) will influence the final character of the pet. This is called nurture. Many behaviours that the owner experiences as a problem, are actually normal behaviours for the pet. Examples are urine marking and furniture scratching in cats, digging and certain types of aggression in dogs. Although normal, they are not acceptable to the owner. Other behaviours are however not normal, examples like anxiety and phobias (such as separation anxiety and thunderstorm phobia) or compulsive behaviours (tail chasing or licking until raw lesions appear). Not all owners are aware that the majority of behaviour problems can be treated. So where does one go to improve your pet’s behaviour? Typically one could consult one’s veterinarian. Although your veterinarian may not offer behaviour consultations, they can refer you to an appropriate professional. In South Africa there are no registered animal behaviour specialists. There are veterinary behaviourists and animal behaviourists. Veterinary

behaviourists are veterinarians that have done further studies in animal behaviour. They can assess the pet, and differentiate whether the problem is purely behaviour related, or whether there may be an underlying medical condition causing the problem. Veterinary behaviourists can prescribe medicine for the treatment of behaviour problems if indicated. Animal behaviourists have done studies in animal behaviour and can assess behaviour problems, but they may not be able to differentiate between behaviour and medical related causes. They are not allowed to prescribe medicines. To treat any behavioural problem successfully it is important to establish the exact cause or motivation for the behaviour. Once a diagnosis is made, treatment can be undertaken. To achieve the favourable outcome the treatment must consist of a multimodal approach. This usually incorporates some or all of the following: management, ensuring that the pet’s needs are met, adjusting the environment, behaviour modification techniques and training, pheromone therapy, nutraceuticals, alternative therapies (such as Tellington touch or acupuncture), the use of behaviour products (such as thundershirts or nail caps) and medicines. Pets play an important role in our lives, and are often part of the family. To ensure that the bond between animal and owner remains, it is recommended that owners seek help as soon as possible, as the sooner the problem is seen to, the better the outcome of the treatment is likely to be. Owners should be aware that there are steps that can be taken to deal with unwanted behaviours, and that there are professionals who can help to improve their pet’s behaviour and assist owners in understanding their pet’s behaviour!

The Staffordshire BULL TERRIER A
bout the Breed:
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier, also called the Stafford, Staffy or Staffie, is a medium-sized dog of somewhat short stature with a muscular, athletic body. Contrary to its tough appearance, the Stafford is a gentle, loyal and highly affectionate dog breed. However, this breed is quite powerful and tends to be stoic in the face of pain. The very short, smooth coat of the Stafford requires little more than routine grooming. This breed tends to shed at a low to moderate rate, though shedding does increase seasonally. As with any dog breed, proper training is a must for the Stafford. This is a very intelligent dog breed that can be stubborn, following his own will if permitted. Therefore, obedience training is essential in order to manage your Stafford. The Stafford is an athletic dog breed with plenty of energy, so routine exercise is very important. However, be cautious not to overdo it in warmer weather, as the breed is sensitive to heat. Staffords will especially benefit from dog sports that challenge them mentally and physically. Regardless of the type of exercise you give your Stafford, be sure it is provided about twice daily or more. Overall, Staffordshire Bull Terriers have friendly, gentle dispositions and make lovely companions for many types of households. Praised for its “nanny-like” instincts, the Stafford gets along remarkably well with children when properly trained and socialized. However, because of this breed’s strong prey drive and dog fighting ancestry, use caution around other pets. If raised together, well-trained and closely supervised, they may even learn to get along beautifully. While not ideal as guard dogs for the home, this breed will protect people from harm. The Stafford is very loyal and tends to bond closely with its owner. If you are active, patient and ready to provide plenty of one-onone affection to your dog, the Stafford could be the dog breed for you.
Size:
Weight: 24-38 pounds Height: 14-16 inches at the shoulder Colors: Red, fawn, tan, white, black, blue or brindle (any shade). All colors may be with or without white sometimes referred to as piedbald or skewbald
Health Problems:
Responsible breeders strive to maintain the highest breed standards as established by kennel clubs like the Kennel Union of South Africa. Dogs bred by these standards are less likely to develop hereditary conditions. However, some hereditary health problems can occur in the breed. The following are some conditions to be aware of: • Hip Dysplasia • Patellar Luxation • Canine Atopic Dermatitis and other skin issues • L-2-Hydroxyglutaric Aciduria
History:
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier shares a common ancestor — the Bulldog — with the American Staffordshire Terrier, the American Pit Bull Terrier, and the Bull Terrier. It was created in the early nineteenth century to be smaller and faster in the fighting ring, yet gentle and friendly toward people. It was probably developed by crossing the Bulldog with an ancestor of the Manchester Terrier. The cross eventually evolved into the Staffordshire Bull Terrier we see today. The first Staffordshire Bull Terrier Club was formed in England in 1835, and a breed standard was written shortly thereafter. by Andrew Theophanous of Shankly Staffordshire Kennels

Q&A
with Phillip
Ask our Expert to solve your Animal Related Dilemmas. Forward your Queries and questions to Philip: ostlersinn@polka.co.za and we will endeavour to answer them.
Townhouse Trauma
Q We recently moved into a Townhouse Complex. Originally we were told we were allowed to keep our two cats, but have now received a letter from the Body
Corporate claiming that our cats are causing a nuisance, and have taken to entering other peoples Units when we are not home, stealing food, and urinating up against curtains and furniture. The cats have never done anything like this before and we are distraught that we may be forced to get rid of them- What can we do?
A
Townhouse dwelling has become increasingly popular due to the ever increasing Crime statistics and our own need for safety and security. As we decrease our own living space in exchange for safer living conditions and peace of mind, the animals we take with us often battle to adapt to the limited living area we expect them to stay in, and can develop behaviour deemed unacceptable either to ourselves or by our neighbours. Many Townhouse dwellers downscale and make a conscious decision not to have any pets of their own, preferring to forego the pleasure a pet can bring in exchange for less responsibility and diminished available area which they may believe unfair on an animal. Others just don’t want animals; their own or anyone else’s- and that is their Right! Undoubtedly your cats are more accustomed to being allowed to roam a larger ‘territory’ than they are now expected to remain within, and the cats see no wrong in expanding that territory as it suits them, especially when there are unexpected treats such as the neighbour’s thawing steak on the counter up for grabs! By increasing their territory, it is deemed necessary by the cats to mark each ‘claimed’ Unit as their own, their natural instinctive behaviour to deter other visiting cats, but not always welcomed by their Human counterparts. One often hears the term “Cats are Free Roaming Creatures.” There is no such thing- Cats like all other animals who are owned, or under the control or
possession of any person are the responsibility of that person, and may not cause a nuisance to any other person. Cats, like any other animal which are not kept within the confines of their owner’s premises and cause a nuisance to other residents can be impounded or removed by the Authorities. We would STRONGLY advise that you devise some means of containing your cats within the perimiter of your own Unit if you want to keep them, or alternately consider homing them responsibly to owners and premises where they would not be considered a nuisance. Being fairly lazy at heart, cats can be kept within the dwelling, and would spend hours asleep inside a cupboard or sunning themselves in a window- sill. This will mean a bit more effort on your part though, to ensure there is always a clean sand- box available for their ablusions, as well as toys and other items to keep them occupied. I have seen properties fitted with Cat- Proof fencing- L shaped brackets mounted on the inside of perimeter walls with a length of wire mesh fitted in such a way that if the cat tries to scale the wall, it cannot pass the wire mesh, thus keeping them confined to their home premises. Bear in mind, your neighbours have as much right to live Pet Free, as you have the right to have your pets, and an on-going neighbour feud over your cats behaviour could affect your relationships and happiness at the complex, which is very unpleasant.
Unbearable barking
Q My neighbour has four large dogs which are kept inside her property by means of a locked gate. She also has a small Miniature Doberman type which can get
under the gate and is always in the streets, barking at anything that moves which in turn sets the bigger dogs off barking as well! The noise is unbearable, but I don’t want to approach my neighbour as she appears very rude and unpleasant, and I don’t want to cause a problem.
A
You don’t mention whether you reside in a residential area or on a Smallholding, but either way there does appear to be certain contraventions of the By- laws Relating to Dogs. Should you be a resident of a residential suburb, then the standard By- Laws for most areas dictate that a maximum of two dogs may be kept unless special permission from the Council is obtained to own and keep more than that number. On a Smallholding the number is four. The By- Laws also clearly state that in order to own a dog, the premises must be fenced in such a manner as to confine the dog and prevent it from becoming a nuisance to other persons. Likewise, the incessant barking is also a violation of the said By- Laws. I sympathise with the fact that you do not want to cause bad feelings with your neighbour. However, taking steps and reporting the matter to the Authorities could cause even more animosity which, in the interest of good neighbour relations should be avoided. It is possible that your neighbour may either be at work or on a more remote part of the property and might not even be aware of the nuisance her dogs are causing.
Could I suggest that you approach your neighbour politely, possibly even invite her over to your house for tea, (you may even make a friend!) and explain your concerns regarding her dogs, even possibly suggesting ways to alleviate the situation. I am certain she would not want her little dog impounded as a stray, stolen or even worse, hit by a motor car, and might be grateful for your advice. Possibly suggest an extra piece of mesh at the bottom of her gate to prevent the escape, and covering in the gates with Shade cloth or sheet metal to prevent the bigger dogs from seeing out of the property, and having something to bark at. As a last resort, the matter could be reported to the local Metro Police who’s duty it is to uphold the Municipal By- Laws. Such report must be put in writing (anonymous complaints will not be investigated,) and forwarded to the Superintendent of the Metro Police Sector for your area, and the matter will be investigated. It would be preferable to only go this route as a final resort- it could lead to fines which would certainly not endear you to your neighbour, as well as the awful possibility of some of the dogs being removed to an uncertain future, which as a caring person we are sure you would want to avoid. Good luck- go and make a friend of your neighbour and her dogs!!

Skin
Sensitivity and
allergies
in Dogs
SuperVet Sensitive has the solution
A
llergies in dogs are triggered by the protein molecules in animal and plant products. Dogs develop allergies by continued exposure to certain proteins with bigger molecules that they have trouble digesting. The animal proteins that dogs are most exposed too, and therefore have the highest possibility of developing sensitivity to, are beef, pork, and fish. The formulation of a sensitive food for dogs aims to have the fewest possible allergens, or to have these proteins hydrolysed for easy absorption. Hydrolysing breaks down the protein molecules into their smallest form, called amino acids, that are easily absorbed by the animal. It is however, an extremely costly process on an industrial scale, and results in very expensive products for consumers. In the normal cooking process of dog food, the proteins do also partially break down to allow for easy digestion. In the cooking process of dry dog food, the carbohydrates undergo gelatinization, which basically acts as a binding agent that

holds everything together. It is therefore necessary for a dry dog food to have a carbohydrate source like rice or maize. However the protein portion in maize or rice, called gluten, can also be responsible for allergic reactions. Therefore it is better to use a carbohydrate source like sorghum which the dog has not been exposed to before. SuperVet Sensitive has a chicken and sorghum formulation that helps dogs with skin problems caused by animal and plant proteins, as well as being a balanced and affordable veterinary diet. I highly recommend SuperVet Sensitive for anyone who has dogs that suffer from skin irritations.

Starting a NEW AQUARIUM By: ADAM SCOTT
When asked to write editorials for a new aquarium section within the Pets & Vets Magazine, I was excited, as we fish people had a section in this great magazine.
I
found myself thinking back to when I first started looking out for a fish tank. Wow, that was many years ago. My mind filled with all my successes and, well let’s say, not so successful aquariums. I realized that there were many school fees that I paid in this aquarium hobby. Hopefully I can save everyone a lot of these in this very rewarding hobby. Before going out and just buying the first aquariums you set your eyes on, a couple of questions should be asked. How big or small. Where will it go? What sort of aquatic life (plants, cold water, tropical or sea water)? Standard or custom built. A tip as far as size is concerned, is the larger the body of water the more stable it will be. Positioning of an aquarium is just as important. It should be away from any direct sunlight, as this will cause algae problems. A beautiful aquarium is the best way to bring life to a darker part of your environment. Then: what will you keep in the aquarium? Will it be a piece of the Amazon basin, a colourful community tank with many sizes and shapes or a marine tank full of colour. All the above aquariums have different requirements and some more challenging than others. Ask yourself what sort of time you would like to spend on your new hobby. Now, whether a beginner who has bought the wrong equipment, or an experienced hobbyist, they will both agree – the most important things you must acquire are free advice and services from a competent person at a reputable aquarium or pet store. This person will be able to advise you on all your equipment and requirements that you will need for your little eco system. Educate yourself through
reading and talking to hobbyists or staff at pet stores before making any decisions. Someone, who had a tank “once upon a time”, might tell you, this is a lot of work. But understand, just as technology in every field around us has changed, so has the Aquarium hobby. There are easy filtration solutions available, lights that allow a person to propagate corals, automatic fish feeders and even floating magnet aquariums cleaners. Yes, the hobby does require a little work, but mostly a bit of time, but what hobby doesn’t. Shape also plays a role, as the proportion of volume to surface area changes with shape change, ie: a tall narrow tank has a large volume yet small surface area. Oxygen and CO2 exchange happen on your water surface so you want a large surface area. Then we get to lighting, again, shape plays a part. A coral tank or natural, planted aquarium needs a lot of light hence a large surface area to fit many tubes. Now we get to the actual tank, which, must be manufactured from the correct size glass, secondly, avoid aquariums that limit your options on filtration. Filtration will be the life support system for your aquarium. Leave enough space for your filtration components either under or next to your aquarium. This will probably be where the greatest percentage of cost will be. Do not take short cuts here and keep your options open, inevitably once the bug bites you, there will be more components needed. Finally, remember, establish a relationship with a competent aquariums specialist where you will be sourcing your products and livestock from, and be weary of quick sales advice. “Think of us who cannot speak to tell you of the love we seek whose rights and needs must go unheard unless compassion speaks the word”
Joan started her kennels 10 years ago with a passion and love for animals, which is clear to anyone who meets her. She has received countless letters of thanks and appreciation for her devotion to her clients dogs, whom she calls her babies. As one of her clients wrote: “During the past year I had the pleasure of boarding my 3 dogs, 4 times, 2 of them were “special needs” dogs - one a blind diabetic, the second an arthritic elderly spaniel and the third a happy pug - Joan has been amazing giving insulin, medication and fantastic care to these animals. I know they are looked after as well as they are at home. Due to all her loyal clients she’s been able to donate a substantial amount to the different animal charities over the years. Joan is available to give all the little babies all the love and care that she’s given over the last ten years. Dear Valued Clients Firstly I would like to take this opportunity to THANK YOU for all your support. I founded “The Dawson Kennels” in 2005, nearly 10 years ago. I have put my heart and soul into building a loving holiday park for your four legged kids (Doggies). Due to the fact that I am not a franchise or retailer, I am a completely different establishment to another kennel with the same name. I have decided to change the name of my business to prevent further confusion. I will endeavour to maintain and exceed the current standard of practice: Tender Loving Care of your important family members so that you can relax and enjoy your holiday. Kind regards Joan Langford-Smith 23
Volst ruis I
was determined that my brother’s two children would ride, despite my sister in law’s absolute aversion to anything animal.
To my horse-fuddled brain, I figured that if there was a pony available, especially a cutie like Honey Child, that the children would have no choice but to fall hopelessly in love with her, and end up as gallant Equestrians, galloping manfully across country and leaping impressive fences at Shows As my nagging for the children to be brought for regular lessons had fallen on deaf ears, I decided to take the pony to them, and installed Honey in the field behind their house, complete with saddle and bridle in the hope that their father, my brother, would be encouraged to saddle the diminutive equid and encourage his offspring to ride. Needless to say this never happened, and it fell to me to regularly visit Honey in her new home, to check her over weekly for ticks and other parasites, as otherwise it would never happen. Brother Gary has some strange ideas, one of them having been ostriches in his field as a deterrent to the two-legged variety of dogs which had recently plagued the area, figuring that nobody in their right mind would enter a field containing two giant feather dusters with sharp beaks and dangerously kicking legs. The female ostrich had died sometime shortly after being bought leaving the black, imposing, less than sociable male bird. Often this huge creature could be seen, squatting near the gate between himself and any observer, playing out what appeared to be a love danceswishing his white plumed wings back and fourth systematically, swaying with his head and neck stretched back in a show of amorous flirting. The fronts of his legs would glow a bright red as aggression mounted making it inadvisable to enter his domain. It was Sunday afternoon when, accompanied by my friend Anne as well as with Gideon, my hapless friend who always appears to attract
disaster, I decided it was time for my routine inspection of Honey in her field. Armed with a head-collar, Anne and I strode purposefully into the field, caught the pony and began our scrutiny of ears and other delicate bits, leaving Gideon to follow and close the gate. With heads close to Honey and eyes peering intently into an ear, we heard a muffled cry of “Help!” Engrossed in the pony and her ablutions, neither Anne nor I paid much attention. Absently, Anne muttered to Gideon who was nowhere near the two of us “What do you want help with?” Again, this time more urgently, came the cry. “Help; help!” Irritated at this untimely disruption of our diligent ministrations, I glanced up briefly, only to observe Gideon curled up on the ground in the foetal position, shielding his vitals, whilst approximately 300km of angry Ostrich bounced up and down on his hapless form, using him as a trampoline! Without even thinking, I threw myself at the ostrich, shoving the great, feathered oaf off Gideon in one mammoth push. Gideon, like the true friend he is, quickly found his hind legs, and left the scene as fast as those little legs would carry him- leaving the now furious Ostrich alone with ME! Floundering around, I was able to find a long stick with which I was able to keep the kicking, hissing bird briefly at bay whilst I retreated backwards and out of the field. All’s well that ends well, yet I cant help but smirk every time we drive anywhere with Gideon in the car, and see Feather Dusters for sale; I can distinctly hear in the back of my mind the muffled cry of “Help! Help!!” by Philip
