TO SUPPLEMENT OR NOT? You most certainly do not need to be a novice, to be confused on the subject of Animal nutrition. There are no longer discussions about whether supplementation is needed for animals, but rather, in what amounts they are needed.

A

ll animals have some level of supplementation needs, much the same as humans do, and it is the exact amount that remains a mystery. Much research has been done in ascertaining the minimum amounts required to prevent deficiencies, whilst very little research on what maximum amounts is required. The ranges for optimum health and performance are luckily large enough to allow for substantial supplementation. By feeding a formulated pet food, does unfortunately not guarantee your animal is receiving all the required nutrition in the ‘fully allowed’ amounts, as firstly; feed manufactures are regulated by the department of agriculture, to contain only the minimum amounts of only some vitamins and minerals. Secondly; common sense tells us that if all that is required, is present in maximum levels, our pet food would cost 10 times what we are currently paying. Thirdly; we are all well aware that due to soil deterioration whatever is grown in it or grazes from it, will be lacking.

We also then are well aware that due to all the chemicals used to kill the bad bacteria on crops and in water, also kills any good bacteria , hence our beneficial gut bacteria is minimal at best. To ensure your pets optimum health and vitality supplementation becomes fundamental. Fortunately most vitamins & minerals etc. have very high toxicity thresholds, so balanced supplementation is a relatively safe practice, without ill effects. “Large amounts of supplements may not improve an animal’s performance, but less than optimal amounts will certainly limit their performance, at best” The above information is extracts taken from papers presented and accepted by the Council of Nutrient Requirements of animals – Washington, USA. www.promixsupplements.com CONTACT: 083 726 7152 2

DANE GREAT

The South African Great Danes Association was formed and affiliated to the Kennel Union of Southern Africa in 1945 and is numbered as one of the oldest Specialist Dog Clubs in South Africa. Our aim is to encourage the correct breeding of our ‘Giant Breed’ by encouraging breeders: • to research the background of the breeding stock they use • make use of available health checks on their breeding stock • exhibit their dogs a Championship Show Level • carefully check and follow up on the stock they sell We hold one Championship show each year and although, in company with many other breeds, exhibit numbers have dwindled somewhat - the huge increase in the cost of travelling, accommodation, etc, our show is still the one that the ‘top breeders’ try to attend. We also hold one ‘Non Championship’ show each year. This one does not draw out of the Province exhibition and is a more ‘relaxed’ and training sort of show. We also keep in close touch with a network of people who rescue and where possible re-home abused, abandoned and stray dogs and use our network to try and re-home any Great Danes needing assistance. Until recently we had a bank of kennels of our own where we could house Danes in need but unfortunately this is no longer the case and we can only act as a ‘network’ in case of need. So! You are thinking of making a GReat Dane a part of your family? Well here is a little background on our beloved breed. The Great Dane was originally bred and kept in packs as Boar Hounds by the nobility of Germany. They were a very fierce breed and not at all like the “Gentle Giants” that we know today, their physical appearance was also very much coarser and more “mastiff like”. During the years after the second world war dedicated breeders of Great Danes in Germany, America and Britain all played a part in the refining of this lovely dog into the beautiful, elegant but still very powerful dog that we know today. The original fierce and aggressive temperament has vanished and in its place we now have the gentle, protective and playful temperament so well known to the owners of these dogs. Today the Great Dane is known around the world and beautiful specimens of the breed grace the showrings of most countries - some of the best specimens coming from Sweden and Norway but with the adverts of jet travel the best bloodlines are now to be found all over the world including South Africa. The colours that you see here today are FAWN (the brown ones) BRINDLE (the striped ones) BLACK, (either solid or with some white markings) and the MANTLE (white with a solid ‘cape’). The Great Dane is NOT a kennel dog - he is most definitely a HOUSE dog and desperately needs to be with his or her family and live in the house. Kept as a true companion dog the Great Dane will reward his family with loyalty, love and protection. The Great Dane is NOT an outside ‘Guard Dog”. Kept indoors as part of the family he will defend you with his life. Restricted at all times to outside the house he does not always develop that close bond. The Great Dane is NOT a horse - don’t let the children sit on his back, his spine is not built for it and it will cause him injury and discomfort ( and you with some hefty vet’s bills to fix the problem). Although his great size does need sufficient exercise to keep him firm and muscular, he does not demand excessively long walks - he does need a place to stretch his muscles and run and play every so often and a daily walk is very welcome but he

will happily fit in with your routine and stretch out at your feet to watch television with you on the days you are not feeling particularly energetic. One the other hand, if you are a fitness fanatic or a runner he will very happily join you in your daily run or run alongside your horse on your daily outride - but a word of caution - don’t take him for long runs until he is over 12 months old and has developed his joints and muscles enough to take the exercise (just as you would not take your toddler or young child on a long hard road run). The Great Dane Puppy takes a little bit of special rearing because he grows at a tremendous rate and needs the correct food and sufficient rest time to do all that growing in the first year of his life. He is very good with children but is rather clumsy as a puppy so small children need to be supervised around him because he is very soon much bigger than they are. Right from the start it is important to make your puppy aware of the house rules and what behaviour is permitted or “out of bounds”. Please do not fall for the wrinkly face, pleading eyes gimmick and allow puppy up onto the furniture and especially your bed unless you are prepared for the fact that in a few short months it will be impossible for both you and dog to fit comfortably on that bed or settee and believe me the dog will not be the one who is uncomfortable. At this stage it is very difficult to explain to that same hurt and puzzled face that the “rules” have changed. Don’t allow or encourage rough & tumble play and races indoors with the children and dog unless you are happy to have a 60+kg animal crashing into anything or anyone in it’s path because it could not navigate that slippery corner. Likewise, it is not advisable to play the game of “look how big he is when I put his paws on my shoulders” unless you teach him the correct and only instruction permissible for this action. You do not want a visit by the Great Aunty Eliza to end up with a broken hip! Before you decide on a Great Dane do some investigation of the breed and make sure you find a reputable breeder who will help you with advice on the correct rearing of a puppy and who will make sure that this is the correct breed for you before they agree to sell you a puppy. Never buy any puppy of any breed from a breeder who will ‘meet you at the garage’ with the puppy or who is not happy for you to visit and meet the mother/father/ both of the puppy and see where and how they were raised. A good breeder will be available to you 24/7 with advise and assistance and will in fact insist on being part of the puppy’s settling down process. Loolilocks Koi Farms Every new Koi that you receive should be quarantined. A Koi can harbour parasite, bacteria or virus's without even showing any symptoms. If you place an un-quarantined Koi in your pond, you risk the well being of your entire collection. Performing a quarantine cycle will keep both the new fish and your existing collection safe. Equipment Needed: The quarantine tank can be a lot smaller than a pond because it will only be a temporary home for the Koi. Most quarantine tanks are 500 to 2000 litres in size. The Filter: The water quality will need to be in pristine condition. The new Koi will be stressed out enough from the move and poor water quality will further its immune system. A biological filter can also be used to clean the water, but the bacteria in it will need to be grown for at least six weeks beforehand in order be able to handle a fish load. Air Pump: The tank will need a constant supply of fresh oxygen. An electromagnetic air pump can be purchased cheaply at most koi dealers. Heater: An aquarium heater could be installed on the tank. It should be large enough to keep the water temperature between be 20-24 degrees Celsius. Net: The quarantine tank will need its own net. You do not want to use the same net for the pond and the quarantine tank because of the risk of cross Tank Cover: The tank should have a net that covers the top to keep the Koi from jumping out. Koi are jumpy for up to two weeks when they are introduced into a new environment. Quarantine Medicine and Test Kits: The following medicines are required to help with the quarantine procedure: •Salt •Parasite, Bacteria and Fungal Treatments •Microscope •Water Test Kit and thermometer. Quarantine Procedure: Use the following steps to properly quarantine your fish: 1. Get the quarantine tank up and running. This includes getting the bacteria colonized in the filter and adding 3kgs of salt to the water. The water temperature should be 20-24 degrees Celsius. 2. Acclimate the new Koi fish in the quarantine tank. 3. Cover the tank with the net. 4. Place a piece of plastic or a piece of insulation over the net so the Koi has some shade. This will allow the Koi to feel safer in its new, temporary home. 5. Test the water parameters daily for the first week. You should test for: temperature, pH, Ammonia, Nitrite and salinity . If they are stable after the first week, you may switch to testing every few days. 6. Don’t feed the Koi for a few days until they have become used to its new surroundings. 7. Keep an eye on your Koi. They should swim around the tank without scratching its side (also known as flashing). If the Koi is flashing, it may have a parasite infestation. If you suspect that the Koi has a parasite infestation, you can treat it with a broad spectrum parasite treatment or you can contact a koi specialist that is knowledgeable in freshwater fish care come and examine the Koi. The koi specialist will perform a scraping of the slime coat with a microscope slide. The koi specialist will then examine the slide under the microscope to try and identify the parasite that is affecting the Koi. Once the parasite is found, the koi specialist will prescribe a parasite treatment regimen that will get rid of the infestation. If left untreated, the damage caused by the parasites could lead to bacterial infections. 8. Perform a 25% water change weekly. 9. Catch the Koi and examine the entire surface of the body. An ulcer may have popped up on its underside, which is impossible to see when viewing the fish from top down. If ulcers are found anti biotic may be needed. 10. After three weeks and if the Koi fish is large enough, you may want to have a KHV (Koi herpes virus) test performed. A KHV test will let you know if the Koi fish has this viral disease. A sample is required to perform an khv test, if you don’t know how consult a koi specialist.

Wait until the test result is back to move the Koi into the pond. 11. If you did not perform a KHV test, but you feel that the Koi is healthy, you may move the Koi out to the pond if the quarantine period is over. Re-acclimatise the Koi to your main pond. Remember: • Isolate the Koi in the quarantine tank for at least 3 weeks. • Do not introduce a sick Koi into your pond even if the quarantine period is over. Putting the rest of your collection in danger and needlessly moving a sick Koi is a terrible idea. Most of all enjoy your koi and buy from a reputable specialist shop where you can go for advice and help. Make sure your supplier has a microscope on hand and can test water parameters and do microscopic testing on Koi.

Loolilocks Koi Farms would like to wish every one a Merry Christmas and a prosperous new year . Regards Juan - Loolilocks Koi Farms 8

The homecoming

Taking him from his littermates and introducing him to a new home with new smells, sights, and sounds can be overwhelming for an eight-week-old pup, so take steps to assure an easy transition. Make sure the pup has a spot to call his own, someplace he can go where he will not be pestered by children, other pets, or visitors. This can be a crate, a purchased dog bed, or a blanket in the corner. The crate for a puppy should be a small one; an adult size crate can be purchased when he outgrows the puppy crate. Bring a blanket or towel from his first home and put it in his place along with a blanket or towel from your own supply. Dogs have a strong sense of smell; familiar smells will help him feel more comfortable. Feed the same food that the breeder did, or mix some of that brand in with the food you prefer to gradually accustom the pup’s system to the new diet. Confine the pup to a room occupied by an adult so you have a better chance of preventing mischief and of catching him before he relieves himself on the floor. If you are distracted, leave the pup in his crate for short periods while you work. If he is confined, your relationship stands a good chance of getting off to a fine start - he can’t soil the floor, chew the furniture, or bite baby’s ankles if he is in the crate, so won’t start his life in your family being scolded. Place a crate in the bedroom of the person who is responsible for taking the pup out during the night if he has to relieve himself. Proximity to people will help him adjust better to being without his littermates, and immediate attention to his toilet needs will make housetraining easier. ________________________________________

Visit a vet

Plan a visit to the veterinarian within a few days of bringing the little one home. If you don’t have a vet yet this is a good time to choose a one. Bring a copy of the puppy’s vaccination and worming record and any other medical records. Ask the vet any questions you may have about puppy care. ________________________________________

Otherwise stay at home

Plan on keeping the puppy at home (except for visits to the vet and short trips to accustom him to riding in the car) until he is at least 12 weeks old and preferably until he’s 16 weeks old. Puppies get their initial immunity to disease from their mother. As the pup grows, he is vaccinated for continued protection from several potentially fatal viruses and bacterial infections. However, there is usually a gap in protection as mother’s immunity decreases and administered immunity increases to a safe level.

Pups can pick up bacteria or viruses from other dogs on a walk in the park or a visit to puppy kindergarten class or to a friend’s house. Diseases can be transmitted through dog urine and faeces, so a pup coming into contact with one or the other can become infected. People can bring germs home on their shoes and clothing, so beware of visiting a friend whose dog has had any of the canine infectious diseases. Enjoy the puppy. Guide him or trick him into correct behaviour until it becomes habit. Play with him to help develop his confidence. But most of all, enjoy the puppy. That’s what you got him for.

They raise awareness on animal abuse, teach owners how to treat, feed & care for their animals & supply them with many free services from vet care to food to sterilizations. Our team of 10 volunteers will be riding from 10th to 17th April 2015, from JHB to Piet Retief to St Lucia to Hibberdene – collecting food & money for sterilizations for RWSA, KZN & then on their return trip from Hibberdene to Van Reenen to Clarens to JHB to collect food & money for ALPS, GAUTENG. (See invite on next page for more info) Last year our trip of 8 volunteers raised R60,000 for sterilizations & 1.2tons of cat & dog food for Lucky Lucky Foundation NPO & PETS NPO in the Western Cape. Our goal this year is to raise R75,000 for sterilization & 1.5tons of food for our two NPO’s voted on by our Volunteers.
