ORDER OF DEGREES Widener University historically awards degrees in the order of the founding of schools and colleges of the university. In that tradition, degrees are conferred in the following order: School of Engineering in recognition of its status as the first discipline to confer degrees (1867), College of Arts and Sciences, School of Business Administration, School of Nursing, College of Health and Human Services, and the Center for Graduate and Continuing Studies. Widener’s Delaware Law School and Commonwealth Law School hold separate graduation ceremonies. Within each school and college, the degrees are awarded in this order: doctoral, master’s, bachelor’s, and associate’s degrees. To Quickly Find an Individual: Use the find/search feature to quickly locate someone in this program. Press [Ctrl]-f (Mac users press [Command]-f) and enter your individual’s last name in the pop-up textbox. Press the arrow keys to cycle through instances. Note that individuals who have dual degrees or awards will appear more than once.

HISTORY OF WIDENER UNIVERSITY Founded in 1821 as a preparatory school for boys in Wilmington, Delaware, the institution moved to Pennsylvania in 1862, and was granted collegiate powers and privileges via universal charter by the Pennsylvania legislature in April of that year. Known from 1892 to 1972 as Pennsylvania Military College, though it had officially become PMC Colleges in 1966 when a nonmilitary, coeducational component was added, the name Widener College was adopted and the Corps of Cadets disbanded in 1972. Graduate programs were introduced in 1967, and the Delaware Law School was acquired in 1975. In recognition of its comprehensive offerings, Widener College became Widener University in 1979. Widener has grown into an esteemed university that connects curricula to social issues through civic engagement. It comprises seven schools and colleges that offer liberal arts and sciences, professional and preprofessional curricula leading to associate’s, baccalaureate, master’s, and doctorate degrees. The university’s campuses in Chester and Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and Wilmington, Delaware, serve almost 6,000 students.
ACADEMIC DRESS The history of academic dress begins in the early days of the oldest universities. A statute of 1321 required all “Doctors, Licentiates, and Bachelors” of the Portuguese University of Coimbra to wear gowns. In England during the second half of the 14th century, the statutes of certain colleges forbade “excess apparel” and prescribed the wearing of a long gown. It is still a question whether academic dress finds its sources chiefly in ecclesiastical or in civilian dress. Gowns may have been considered necessary for warmth in the unheated buildings used by medieval scholars. Hoods may have served to cover the tonsured head until superseded for that purpose by the skull cap. The cap was later displaced by a headdress similar to ones now recognized as “academic.” European institutions continue to show great diversity in their specifications of academic dress. In the United States, the practice of wearing academic apparel dates back to colonial times, but there was no uniform standard of approved attire until 1895 when a commission of leading American educators devised a code of academic dress. Although modified in 1932 by the American Council on Education, this code continues to govern the style of academic dress today. GOWNS – The gown for the bachelor’s degree has pointed sleeves and is worn closed. The gown for the master’s degree has an oblong sleeve, open at the wrist, with the sleeve base hanging down in the traditional manner. The rear part of the sleeve’s oblong shape is square cut, and the front part has an arc cut away. It may be worn open or closed. The gown for the doctor’s degree has bellshaped sleeves and may be worn open or closed. Bachelor’s and master’s gowns have no sleeve trimmings. The doctor’s may be faced on the front with black or colored velvet and with three bars of the same across the sleeves. If color is used, it is the color distinctive of the subject to which the degree pertains, and it matches the edging or binding of the hood. The colors associated with the different disciplines include the following:
Arts, Letters, and Humanities—White
Music—Pink
Commerce, Accountancy, and Business—Drab Brown
Nursing—Apricot
Economics—Copper
Philosophy and Psychology—Dark Blue
Education—Light Blue
Physical Education—Sage Green
Engineering—Orange
Physical Therapy—Teal
Fine Arts—Brown
Public Administration—Peacock Blue
Journalism—Crimson
Public Health—Salmon Pink
Science—Golden Yellow
Law—Purple
Library Science—Lemon
Social Work—Citron
Medicine—Green
Theology and Hospitality Management—Scarlet
HOODS – Hoods are worn by those receiving graduate degrees. The colors used in the satin linings are drawn, customarily, from the official colors of the granting institution. Widener University’s colors are blue and gold. The trimming on the hood varies in color and usually indicates the field of study.
2
CAPS – Mortarboards are generally worn as part of the academic costume. The long tassel fastened to the middle point of the cap’s top is black or a color appropriate to the subject, except that the doctor’s cap may have its tassel of gold threads. It is customary for degree candidates to wear the tassels on the right front side before degrees are conferred and to shift them to the left when the degrees are awarded. CORDS, MEDALLIONS, AND STOLES – Widener University has a chapter of Phi Kappa Phi, the national honor society of universities. Founded in 1897, the society recognizes and encourages superior scholarship in all academic disciplines. Those members of Phi Kappa Phi graduating today wear a gold cord to signify their scholastic ranking in the upper 10 percent of the class. Graduates who are members of academic honor societies for specific disciplines may also wear the official cord or medallion of the society as part of their academic regalia. The blue and gold cord signifies membership in Alpha Phi Sigma (National Criminal Justice Honor Society); burgundy and gold, Alpha Sigma Lambda (National Honor Society for Non-Traditional Adult Students); red, Beta Alpha Psi (International Financial Information Honor Society); red and green, Beta Beta Beta (National Biological Honor Society); gold and royal blue, Beta Gamma Sigma (Honor Society for AACSB-accredited business programs); royal blue, Eta Sigma Delta (International Hospitality Management Honor Society); blue, Kappa Delta Pi (International Honor Society in Education); maroon and gold, Kappa Theta Epsilon (National Honor Society for Cooperative Education); white and maroon, Omega Chi Epsilon (Honor Society in Chemical Engineering); blue and white, Omicron Delta Kappa (National Leadership Honor Society); blue, Pi Gamma Mu (International Social Science Honor Society); red and silver blue, Phi Alpha Theta, (International History Honor Society); gold with blue and gold tassels, Psi Chi (National Honor Society in Psychology); lavender and white, Sigma Theta Tau (International Honor Society of Nursing); and orange, Tau Beta Pi (National Engineering Honor Society). A medallion with blue and gold ribbons signifies membership in Phi Alpha (National Social Work Honor Society). A medallion with red and gold ribbons signifies membership in Phi Beta Delta (International Scholars). A medallion on a scarlet ribbon indicates membership in Sigma Tau Delta (International English Honor Society). THE MACE – A ceremonial staff, the mace is carried by the grand marshal of the university and is used to open and close academic convocations.
ALMA MATER WIDENER BLUE AND GOLD Composed by John Vanore ’69. Lyrics by Nancy Huebner ’84 Widener, Blue and Gold, our Alma Mater true. We, your children, sing our praise to you. From Old Main’s lofty dome, your lamp of knowledge shines. You have sought to enlighten us; igniting hearts and minds. On your wings of wisdom, we have learned to soar. Now you are calling us to “Go and serve the world outside your door.” Widener! Widener! May we all, young and old, Bring only honor to the Widener Blue and Gold.

WELCOME TO OUR NEWEST ALUMNI Dear Graduates, On behalf of the Widener University Alumni Association, I’d like to congratulate each of you on this great accomplishment! We’re so very proud of all that you’ve done during your time at Widener University, and we wish you the best as you begin this next phase in your life. But today is not the end of your relationship with Widener—it’s only the beginning. You may not realize it, but on the day you accepted your offer of admission from Widener University, you joined a lifelong community. In fact, you joined more than a community—you joined a family—a Pride. We’re All Widener. What does it mean to be a part of this community? It means we support one another. We open doors for each other. We know many of you will go out and change the world. Changing the world is hard work, and it’s even harder to do alone. There will be times when you’ll need support—and that is when you can lean on your Alumni Association. We are here when you need us most. Count on us: • to make a connection that helps you secure a job or transition to a new career. • to find a mentor who guides you throughout your career journey. • to find a sense of community in a new city or place. • to continue developing new skills and expanding your network. • or even just to connect and reminisce about your favorite moments with Widener classmates, friends, faculty, staff, and coaches. Being a part of this community also brings responsibilities. Widener needs you, too. We need you to stay engaged and pay it forward, whenever possible. Give of your time and your talents to help future generations of Widener students follow in your footsteps. Today Widener becomes your alma mater. In Latin, this means “our mother.” Your alma mater has nourished you, taught you, and prepared you to be independent. Widener will always be here for you, always welcome you back with open arms, and, like every family, we will be bragging about you forever. Please know how proud we are of each of you. How we rejoice at your accomplishments and the people you are and will be. Go out and change the world! We can’t wait to see all the good you are going to do. So on behalf of your new alumni family—now over 60,000 strong—congratulations, and welcome! Sincerely, Terry Travis Vice President, University Advancement

HONORARY DEGREE RECIPIENT Dr. Julie E. Wollman President of Widener University Doctor of Humane Letters Since becoming the 10th president of Widener University in January 2016, Dr. Julie E. Wollman has broadened and advanced Widener’s mission of empowering students to become tomorrow’s leaders and innovators and to create better futures for themselves and their communities. Guided by a passionate pursuit of excellence, she has placed the university in a position to withstand the challenges of the future. Driven by her commitment to build community and facilitate communication and understanding among diverse peoples, Dr. Wollman launched a Common Ground initiative in 2017 that formally engaged members of the Widener community in challenging discussions. Common Ground events are designed to teach participants to lead with integrity, listen actively and openly, respect different perspectives and opinions, have the courage to voice their beliefs, and seek to understand before reacting. Dr. Wollman presented her nationally recognized Common Ground initiative at the 2018 and 2019 South by Southwest Education Conference and Festivals (SXSW EDU). Dr. Wollman has championed a university-wide commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. She oversaw an exponential growth in faculty diversity and the appointment of Widener’s first full-time chief diversity officer. Through a generous gift, she established the Wollman Award for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion that will ensure this work continues. A respected leader in higher education, Dr. Wollman has served on the boards of local, regional, and national organizations, including the Riverfront Alliance of Delaware County where she serves as board vice president; the Middle Atlantic Conference of the NCAA where she serves as board secretary; the Global Philadelphia Association; the Baldwin School; the American Association of University Administrators; and the Crozer Health system; as well as the Chamber of Commerce of Greater Philadelphia where she chairs the Regional College and University President’s Alliance. Dr. Wollman led the addition of new and high-demand academic programs at Widener, including robotics engineering, international engineering, green chemistry, and environmental health and sustainability management. She oversaw the newly formed College of Health and Human Services and has established health sciences programs in key growth areas, including new and upcoming programs in occupational therapy, speech-language pathology, physician assistant, and nutrition. During her tenure, Widener was three times named a “Great College to Work For” by the Chronicle of Higher Education. In 2021, Widener was one of only twelve universities in the nation recognized in four categories of excellence: confidence in senior leadership; diversity, inclusion, and belonging; faculty experience; and shared governance. In 2019, Dr. Wollman launched Agility Experienced, a bold and transformative strategic initiative that enables Widener to quickly adapt to changes in higher education. Rather than making elaborate plans that may quickly become outdated, Agility Experienced improves upon traditional strategic planning by using scenarios to envision various futures and focusing on strategic direction. The approach has been recognized nationally as an emerging best practice. Through passionate and fearless leadership, Dr. Wollman has built upon Widener’s strengths and positioned the university to adapt and thrive well into the future.
