Always ready to listen

Vienna’s underground network is steeped in history

U5 fully automated into the future

Ombudspersons act as a link between the construction site and the residents. They are always ready to listen to the concerns of the local residents, providing first-hand information and working to find solutions together. Each construction phase has its own contact persons who can be reached by local residents either at the construction office or by telephone.

On 3 November 1969, work started on the construction of the Vienna underground network on three lines at the same time. The first sections of the U1, U2 and U4 underground lines formed the basis for the network, which was continuously expanded in the following years.

Many people are already familiar with fully automated underground networks of other major cities such as Paris or Barcelona. After all, what is still a long way off for individual motorised transport has already been tried and tested on the underground, passing the practical test with flying colours. This is why newly built underground lines are almost always fully automated.

Please direct general questions about underground construction to u2u5@wienerlinien.at or by telephone to our customer service department at 01 / 7909 100.

U2xU5 intersection / 03.2019

Since the ceremonial opening of the first section between Karlsplatz and Reumannplatz in 1978, the network has grown to a length of over 83 kilometres and today has 109 stations.

Back to the future: From the first cut of the spade to Wienerberg Work begins on the construction of the underground network with the start of the first expansion phase of Vienna’s underground.

The ground-breaking ceremony for the first expansion phase is held on 8 October at the future U2 station, Matzleinsdorfer Platz. Work also begins at the U2 station Pilgramgasse.

Let’s check out the underground. The underground was something fascinating for Vienna’s inhabitants many years before it even opened. The idea of travelling under St. Stephen’s Square was unimaginable. What a great idea to build a tunnel under the Danube Canal. Some 50 years after starting to build an underground network in Vienna, we are again at work in the heart of the city. Vienna is being given new lifelines so that the bustling centre remains well connected to the districts.

In a second construction phase, the U5 is to be extended to Elterleinplatz in Hernals and the U2 to Wienerberg.

The relevant planning project for the U5 extension was launched in 2018. Planning work for the U2 extension is expected to begin in 2020 so as to complete the U2xU5 intersection during the 2020s.

We are building the city of tomorrow.

The time for fully automated underground operations has finally arrived in Vienna with the construction of the U5, providing an opportunity for the operator of Vienna’s underground system to gain valuable experience in converting existing stations and building new ones: The stations from Karlsplatz to Rathaus will be refurbished and equipped with platform screen doors, and a brand new station will be built at Frankhplatz.

Fully automated underground operations have already been tried and tested internationally. In particular, systems with platform screen doors, such as the ones planned in Vienna, improve safety levels.

Did you know? Trains on the U1 to U4 have already been operating in a semi-automated fashion since day 1, with the speed being determined by the control centre.

Safer Platform screen doors only open once the train has pulled into the station. Delays caused by items on the tracks will also be a thing of the past.

More flexible Times of peak demand, such as is the case of major events, can be handled with greater ease and speed.

More personal Wiener Linien employees will be available on the trains and on the platform to help passengers, rather than performing routine tasks in the driver’s cab.

Technolologically speaking Vienna’s underground network was one of the most modern in the world at that time.

The X-wagon will be Vienna’s first fully automated underground train, but it can also be used with drivers on the U1 to U4 underground lines. The first trains of this new generation are due to begin test operations on Vienna’s underground network in 2020.

Over an area of around 700 m2, the multimedia exhibition offers an exciting insight into the history and future of Vienna’s underground system. You can try your luck as a tunnel builder or plan the U7. A walk-in station model with platform screen doors makes it possible for you to experience a future of full automation on the U5 and get a sense of the look and feel of the new stations.

More jobs

Every third passenger travels within the catchment area of the 13A , 6, 43, U3 and U6. The U2xU5 intersection will provide tangible relief here.

Today, there are ten stations in the underground network where two lines meet. A further four will follow as a result of the U2xU5 intersection.

Climate-friendly urban mobility on track: Vienna has already achieved an e-mobility share of almost 50 percent with the underground and tram network, and this figure is rising.

More convenience

Two projects are covered by the name U2xU5 intersection; projects that can only really be considered together. After all, underground lines are not only being extended, but also “swapped”.

Schottenring

Frankhplatz

With these numerous new underground intersections, the new lines act like a catalyst: not only providing relief to today’s highly frequented lines, but also making the entire public transport network even more efficient and fit for a city of two million people.

More networking

ArneCarlsson-Park

rc

Following major urban development projects, such as the U2 extension to Aspern and the U1 extension to Oberlaa, the U2xU5 intersection will close a substantial gap in the inner city’s underground network. After all, the people of Vienna generally head towards the city centre. This means that, before the underground network can continue extending outwards, the hub of the system needs to be strengthened.

The new underground lines in detail

rS

Network analyses and studies of alternative routings demonstrated that the U2xU5 intersection is the optimum addition to the underground network: The central stations at Rathaus, Neubaugasse and Pilgramgasse will become key underground junctions. For commuters from the south, there will be a third option to connect from the S-Bahn railway lines to the underground at Matzleinsdorfer Platz, in addition to the Central Railway Station and Meidling Railway Station. This opens up new travel routes, enabling shorter travel times and more space in the public transport system.

Frankhplatz The first U5 with a brand new design will be built at Frankhplatz.

We are building the city of tomorrow.

Rathaus The Rathaus station is also the name given to the U2xU5 intersection: this is where the two lines will meet. It is possible to change to tram lines 43 and 44 with just a short walk. Another exit is located on Schwarzspanierstraße.

The existing entrances on both sides of Landesgerichtsstraße will be extended so that both lines can be reached via them.

A passage will be built under the Landesgerichtsstr./ Universitätsstr. crossing, from which there will be three exits.

Tram line 2 will be directly connected via an additional U2 access point at the junction between Josefstädter Straße/ Landesgerichtsstraße.

The U5 will use the platforms of the current U2. The new U2 station will be built beneath this.

Frankhplatz

Pilgramgasse

Neubaugasse

The U2 will cross here under the U4 and the Vienna river. The station will therefore be the system’s deepest one in relation to sea level. The listed Otto Wagner exit will be retained. A new escalator will be added here, leading directly to the U2 via a mezzanine floor.

A brand new entrance is being built so that the U2 can be properly accessed from both sides of the Wien River.

The U2 station Neubaugasse will be the deepest one, at around 35 metres below the surface.

Neubaugasse Pilgramgasse

Reinprechtsdorfer Str.

Matzleinsdorfer Platz

The exit to Kirchengasse leads to Siebensternplatz and to tram line 49.

New lifts will be installed on Mariahilfer Straße.

The current exit at Sonnenhofgasse will be demolished and rebuilt.

Reinprechtsdorfer Straße The first station in the heart of Margareten will substantially improve the public transport connections of the 5th district.

Bus lines 12A and 59A will be connected via the exit at Bacherplatz.

The second exit is located on Siebenbrunnengasse. Here it will be possible to change to the 14A in the future.

Matzleinsdorfer Platz For commuters from the south, there will be a third interchange from S-Bahn railway lines to the underground here, in addition to the Central Railway Station and Meidling Railway Station. A new exit will be created in the 5th district at Matzleinsdorfer Platz.

The underground stop for tram lines 1, 6, 18 and 62, as well as the Wiener Lokalbahn, will have a direct connection.

New direct connections and additional interchanges will shorten journey times for individuals and, at the same time, create capacity for the future. For more information, please visit u2u5.wien.at
