The Joy of Running By Ann Parthemore, Triathlete and Coach

Rethink Running Too many people associate running with drudgery or unit PT, but it is a convenient, liberating way to enjoy our beautiful surroundings here in Germany. Whether you have a specific goal or not, running can become a great way to improve your fitness and well-being. (Almost) no equipment required The up-front costs of running are virtually nil: you need a good, supportive pair of shoes and weather-appropriate clothing. Chances are, you already have these things, so don’t worry about buying new stuff. Over time, you’ll figure out what you need, but the first step is getting out the door. Any place... Army life in Europe can involve lots of travel -- either for TDY or just for fun. But regardless of where or why you are going, running can provide you a way to keep up with your fitness as long as you pack your shoes and clothes. I have found it to be a great way to scout out locations for sightseeing later, or just to get a general orientation to a new city. Here, a GPS watch or an app that will track your run (like MapMyRun or RunKeeper) might be helpful when you are in an unfamiliar area. Hotels will often have good suggestions for routes. ...And any time The outdoors is always open, so you can run whenever you have a spot in your schedule. And think creatively -- if you are going to have to wait somewhere, wear your running clothes and go for a jog instead. If you can’t get too far away, just do multiple smaller loops. Maybe early in the morning or late at night is your only option, that’s fine. Running is available 24/7! Remember, if you are running when it is dark outside, it is a good idea to bring something to make yourself visible, like a reflective vest or a flashlight. Flexibility leads to consistency Consistency is a major factor in the success of any fitness program. It is important to find an activity that you can do on a regular basis if you want to reap the benefits. With running, the flexibility will allow you to adapt your routine to your life, and not the other way around. Bring the family... Running is a very kid-friendly activity. Little ones can ride in the stroller, and older kids would love to accompany you on their bike or scooter. If your child is interested in running with you, think about doing a small loop with them, and then continuing on your own. This will also help to set a good example of physical fitness for your kids. ...Or bring a friend Running with others is a great way to keep you motivated and committed to your plan. Enjoy the scenery The bike paths in Germany provide a safe and scenic way to enjoy your runs away from traffic and intersections. They are generally well marked and frequented by other runners and walkers. Along

the Main and Rhine rivers, there are beautiful trails connecting the charming towns. And if you want more adventure, take a train to another town and run home. Check out the complete map at http:// www.radroutenplaner.hessen.de/ Get a new perspective In our busy lives, exercise sometimes falls to the end of a very long to-do list. But in reality it is a great way to relieve stress and get a chance to rebalance your thinking. By getting outside and getting your blood pumping, you’ll find more energy and a new focus throughout the day. Helpful hints 1. Start out slowly -- Injuries occur when people try to do too much, too soon. You don’t need to start out running daily, so listen to your body when you need a rest. It is much better to avoid injury than to try to treat one! 2. It is OK to walk -- If you are just beginning, consider using a run/walk strategy to get you started. Keep the intervals short to start; for example, jog 2 minutes, walk 2 minutes, for 5 cycles. As you get fitter, increase the running and decrease the walking. Or increase the total time or intensity. 3. Hydrate and fuel your training -- Especially in the warmer months, make sure you are drinking enough water while exercising. Unless you are running for more than 90 minutes, you shouldn’t need to worry about food while exercising as long as you have eaten well beforehand. If weight loss is your goal, don’t use a run as an excuse to eat or drink extra calories. Community participation MWR offers many opportunities for runs, from the 5K series, to the 10 Mile Freedom Run, to a Half Marathon. Mainz and Frankfurt both host marathons, and a race can be a great excuse to visit a new place. Having an event on the calendar provides the extra motivation to get going! Massage Therapy // Discovery Guide // APR-SEP 2014

Massage Massage is more than just a luxury. Studies show that the human body needs touch as much as it needs oxygen, water and food to survive. Massage can provide the fuel you need to keep you going and stay healthy in this era of high stress. TRIGGER POINT THERAPY focuses on stimulating and releasing the tender areas of tension throughout the body. Similar to acupressure points, these “knots” are built up during a person’s life due to physical and emotional stress. Focused pressure is applied during a session to release your trigger points and can be quite painful but the effects are lasting and profoundly transformative. MYOFASCIAL MASSAGE is used to treat injury and discomfort by reducing pain and increasing range of motion. It targets the fascia, or membrane that surrounds the muscle, and focuses specifically on releasing tension in this important area. ORTHOPEDIC MASSAGE involves therapeutic assessment, manipulation and movement of soft tissues to resolve pain and dysfunction stemming from injury, trauma and postural imbalances. It focuses on restoring function and structural balance throughout the body for both prevention and rehabilitation. LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE gently and rhythmically moves the lymph through the body to relieve pressure and enhance the functioning of the immune system. It can be used for a wide range of purposes including faster recovery from injury, reduction of swelling from pregnancy and strengthened resistance to illness and is most often combined with injury, sports and pregnancy massage. INJURY TREATMENT includes a wide variety of the above techniques and Deep Tissue in order to treat specific injuries such as carpal tunnel, whiplash and repetitive stress injuries.

EVENT PLANNING GUIDE The purpose of this planning guide is to assist organizational event coordinators. Experience has proven that organizational events allow for unit morale building and is an excellent means to introduce military personnel to the sport of golf. Many first time participants gain sufficient interest to continue with the sport. Golf courses have unique operational and maintenance requirements associated with facility use by persons of different skill levels. Those “first timers” or beginners could easily impose upon other golfers without being aware of it. To allow for maximum activity utilization and help prevent costly or irreparable damage, there are some requirements we ask you to consider prior to requesting approval for organizational golf tournaments. •

Tournaments are not routinely approved during periods of peak use (weekends and holidays). Rheinblick Golf Course has reserved most Fridays for ID cardholder events, whether military or civilian.

Tournaments may not be used to raise funds for units or charities without approval of the Commander of USAG Rheinblick.

All food and beverages must be purchased on-site. “Bring your own” is not permitted.

Tournament participation with less than 40 players does not warrant closure, or partial closure of the golf course, for the event. However, groups with less than 40 players are still welcome and will be sent out by tee times or management’s discretion.

Event coordinators must accept responsibility for ensuring that those new to golf are aware of basic golf etiquette. This includes replacing divots, repairing ball marks, keeping carts away from tees and greens, etc. To aid in providing this necessary information to participants, the coordinator or golf course staff will provide a briefing for all participants prior to teeing off. Please allow time for this briefing when planning the start time of your event.

The Rheinblick Golf Course dress code requires proper (spikeless) golf shoes or sneakers. Bare feet, sandals, and boots are inappropriate. Shirts with collars are preferred. Undergarment t-shirts are not acceptable. Shirtless is unacceptable. Tank tops, sleeveless, mesh, halter tops, and swim suit tops are unacceptable. Trousers and shorts should be hemmed, no cutoffs.

To reserve an event, contact the Rheinblick Golf Course: Commercial: +49 (0)6115-05-92715

Discover Healthy Choices for Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner and more... By Marlene K. Balzer, MWR Marketing Assistant

Who says you can’t eat healthy if you eat at a fast food restaurant? It’s all about healthy choices. The Wiesbaden Community has some great places for healthy eating if you just step back and make educated selections. The first stop is the Wiesbaden Entertainment Center, located in Hainerberg Housing (DSN: (314)548-9406 or Commercial: +49 (0)611-143-548-9406).The WEC offers take-away food choices but also has ample seating for those who want to dine in. When I visit in the morning, I like a hot cup of black coffee or a refreshing cup of green tea. The aroma of either of the two hot drinks helps me start my day off right. For an additional boost, I like to have a scrumptious vegetable omelet with two eggs. Lunch at the Wiesbaden Entertainment Center also has a lot of healthy food options. I like a fresh, green salad served with a seasoned grilled chicken breast sandwich on toast, and to quench my thirst a cold glass of spring water. For a healthy dinner, head to Little Italy Restaurant, on Clay Kaserne (DSN: (314)5489413 or Commercial: +49 (0)611-143-548-9413). They offer free delivery for lunch and dinner, and are open on Sundays. I find that Italians take their food very seriously. Therefore, there are some fantastic wholesome foods at this restaurant. I like start off with minestrone soup to get my taste buds moving, for an entrée I’ll have pasta with a blend of fresh sautéed vegetables, shrimp and a splash of olive oil. When looking for healthy dishes, I try to avoid pasta dishes served with cream sauces, thick crust and cheese-filled items. My last stop is the Sports and Fitness Juice Bar (DSN: (314)548-9830 or Commercial: +49 (0)611-143-548-9830), located in the Wiesbaden Fitness Center on Clay Kaserne (Phone: . I truly enjoy the protein shake with fresh bananas. Plan on enjoying a good workout or fitness class and then treat yourself to a delicious smoothie. Stop by the Juice bar to discover more delicious, healthy options after your workout. These are just a few of the places where you can get healthy foods at USAG Wiesbaden.

SHARP // DISCOVERY GUIDE // APR-SEP 2014

Stand Up! Speak Up!

By Rolando DeLeon, SHARP Coordinator & Marlene Balzer

SHARP (Sexual Harassment/Assault Response and Prevention) is an Army program which focuses on the reduction of sexual harassment and assaults, and provides response support when incidents do occur. We’re kicking off Sexual Assault Awareness month April, 2014. Although our program does a lot to support victims, we really want to reduce the incident rate. We will be introducing a new program, bystander education, open to all ID card holders, in an effort to reduce incident rates. The Army recognizes this is not a victim issue, it is an offender issue. With a team of peers ready to stand up and speak up, we can stop incidents of harassment and assault before they occur. Immediate SHARP response is available to all adult ID card holders for sexual assault incidents OCONUS. Soldiers and Adult dependents of service members may receive direct long term support from a program specialist. For all others we can coordinate for support through other agencies both on and off post. For Harassment we handle all complaints against Soldiers. We are also available for all ID card holders for training and education. We can see a victim anytime they wish to file their initial report, within 24 hours of an incident or years after it has occurred. For harassments we must receive the complaint within 60 days of the last occurrence. After the report is initiated, the client is assigned an advocate, who will help guide them through what can seem like a maze of support networks. The added support helps to reduce stress and places all the primary decisions in the hands of the client. Treatment, medical support and counseling are provided, in addition to many other services. Your victim advocate would help you navigate the services you feel are best for you. Clients also have access to their own legal support through the Army’s Special Victim Counsel Program. The 24 hour hotline phone number is 0162-296-6741. There is a team of representatives ready to assist when called. We want all Sexual Assault victims to use the hotline or tell a victim advocate you may already know within your organization. The hotline is staffed by trained advocates and is 100% confidential. If someone needs or wants support please call us at 0162-296-6741. I’d like everyone to remember to Stand up! and Speak up! They don’t have to do it all but they have a duty to do something.

Hunting, fishing... occupied my every moment. Cares I knew not, and cared naught about them. -John James Audubon

Hunting, Fishing and Sport Shooting in Wiesbaden, Germany and Europe. Take advantage of this unique opportunity to hunt and fish while overseas. Becoming a German Jaeger is a true honor and Rotwild, Rehwild, Damwild and Schwarzwild are just some of the interesting species in this area. The U.S. Forces in Germany are sanctioned to conduct training & testing to fulfill the requirements to purchase a German Hunting License, German Fishing License, and Sport Shooter Qualification Certificate. Personnel may become HFSS program members at their nearest Outdoor Recreation in the garrison where they will take the course. The USAG-Wiesbaden has a very active hunting, fishing and sport shooting community that assists the US Military community gain access to and become integrated in these great hobbies year-round. The Hunting, Fishing and Sport Shooting Advisory Council (HFSSAC) serves as both an advising body and a rallying point for Hunting, Fishing and Sport Shooting. The HFSSAC assists Outdoor Recreation in support of hunters, fishermen and sport shooters during and after completion of the certification/licensing programs, and provides a group of friends and colleagues interested in similar hobbies, and is a link between the American Military Community and the German clubs and in German communities throughout the area. Special thanks to Steve Steininger for his contribution to this section.
