Ready and Resilient (R2) By MSG TOWOLAWI SIKIRU, USAG Wiesbaden Ready and Resilient (R2) Director The Army is aware of its rigorous profession so it postures its culture to be Ready and Resilient. The Implementation of resilience in the Total Army (Soldiers, Family Members, and Civilians) will build upon mental, physical, emotional, behavioral and spiritual skills in order to enhance their ability to manage the rigors and challenges of a demanding profession. At the heart of this initiative is the focus on building the personnel as an enabler to achieve enhanced performance; which directly links to the increased readiness of the individual, their unit and the Total Army. The intent is to be able to develop skills to manage life at work and at home. The Ready and Resilient Campaign integrates and synchronizes various efforts and initiatives which enhance Soldiers’ and Civilians’ ability to face adversity by utilizing mental and emotional skill learned from resiliency training. Resilient individuals can bounce back better. The Army has invested years of research into the Comprehensive Soldier and Family Fitness program. The Comprehensive Soldier and Family Fitness (CSF2) program represents the Army’s investment in the readiness of the force and the quality of life of our Soldiers, their Families and Department of the Army Civilians. CSF2 is a major player in the Army’s Ready and Resilient Campaign. The intent of CSF2 is to ensure all members of the Army Family are best prepared to deal with the rigors of the Army profession. In Wiesbaden, Resiliency is built through various programs and services provided through the Garrison unit level. The Resilient training is available from when new Soldiers/ Family/ Civilians arrive at the Welcome Center; training conducted at units, quarterly training is available at the Army Community Service for Soldiers and Civilian, and training is provided for all workers in their Directorate. Ready and Resilient core programs are CSF2, SHARP, Soldier For Life, Strong Bonds, Behavioral Health, Sponsorship, ASAP, and IDES. The Army Community Service provides a quarterly structured Master Resilience course for Civilians and Soldiers tutored by certified Master Resiliency Trainers (MRT). The Garrison community level training delivers the holistic package through community SHARP Stand down. The United States Army is transitioning into a Ready and Resilient Culture through structured phases using strategic planning. The resilient training will be achieved through sustained and engaged leadership. The integration and utilization of multiple initiatives will challenge its members and leaders to embrace and live by the Army Profession, Values and Ethics.

MASSAGE

Massage is more than just a luxury. Studies show that the human body needs touch as much as it needs oxygen, water and food to survive. Massage can provide the fuel you need to keep you going and stay healthy in this era of high stress. TRIGGER POINT THERAPY focuses on stimulating and releasing the tender areas of tension throughout the body. Similar to acupressure points, these “knots” are built up during a person’s life due to physical and emotional stress. Focused pressure is applied during a session to release your trigger points and can be quite painful but the effects are lasting and profoundly transformative. MYOFASCIAL MASSAGE is used to treat injury and discomfort by reducing pain and increasing range of motion. It targets the fascia, or membrane that surrounds the muscle, and focuses specifically on releasing tension in this important area. ORTHOPEDIC MASSAGE involves therapeutic assessment, manipulation and movement of soft tissues to resolve pain and dysfunction stemming from injury, trauma and postural imbalances. Find Something (Else) You Love to Do! by Ann Parthemore An active lifestyle should be something you want to do, not have to do. Any fitness expert will tell you that doing an activity you enjoy is one of the keys to a successful exercise routine. An active lifestyle should be something you want to do, not have to do. But in order to identify what kind of activities you like, you first need to understand yourself and your personal interests. Even if you already found an exercise routine that you love, it is still worth putting thought into this: maybe you move to a base that doesn’t have a CrossFit room or your favorite spin class instructor has decided to retire. Making an effort to figure out what appeals to you, and then finding and trying these activities may be a long process, but it will ultimately lead you to discover what you truly enjoy doing as well as give you some additional options for exercise. Use activities you already like to identify the basis of your interests. The real question is why? you like a certain activity. It might be that you like meeting with a regular group every week, or enjoy someone guiding you through a workout. Perhaps you have a chaotic schedule and need something that you can do independently. You don’t need to think about exerciserelated pastimes, either. Imagine you had a day where you could choose exactly what you wanted to do, whether that is fishing, or shopping, or restoring a classic car. What about those things appeal to you? Getting input from someone who knows you well might also be helpful. Eventually, you’ll wind up with a list of attributes that describe the new activities you might want to explore.

28

Now you have a list of traits you are looking for, so get out and network to find new activities that are available. You can get information from various places on post about all the fitness-related options that your post offers, like at the gym or Outdoor Rec. However, this is only the start of the search: by talking to others, you can find out even more information about the activity and compare it to your list of traits. If you’re interested in a class, talk to the instructor or other participants; ask your friends or colleagues if they have any knowledge about what might be available given your list of what you’re looking for. And don’t forget about local programs or clubs, since they may know more about activities like hiking, mountain biking, or skiing. The important thing is to reach out to others and ask! This process will take time, but if you keep it in the back of your mind, you will eventually get the information you want. Once you have found a few things you might be interested in, don’t be afraid to try them out! You don’t need to sign up for long term commitments or buy a lot of expensive equipment right up front. Give yourself a chance to see if you enjoy something first. And if you do - that’s great! Keep doing it! But if you try something and it isn’t really for you, think about the why of your reaction. This will help to hone in on other activities you may enjoy. Don’t give up, and you’ll eventually find something you really enjoy. By finding active pursuits that you do because you want to, and not because you should or have to, it is much easier and fun to have an active and healthy lifestyle. Once you know what types of activities you are looking for, find out what is available and get moving! Ann Parthemore is an Army spouse, a veteran, and a member of the Timex Multisport Team. An avid triathlete, she has completed three Ironmans and twice qualified for the Half Ironman World Championships. In addition to coaching and mentoring triathletes and marathoners, she also teaches at the Vilseck Soldier For Life transition program.
