A Level English, History and Sociology students took a trip to the Bronte Parsonage at Haworth to visit the home of the literary sisters, authors of Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre.
They learned more about the lives of the Brontes, took a tour around the Parsonage, visited the church and explored the West Yorkshire village. On their return journey they visited the grave of poet Sylvia Plath to pay their respects.
WORLDSKILLS UK GOLD AWARD FOR APPRENTICE PLASTERER
Apprentice plasterer Sam Dean scooped the Gold Award at the national finals of the WorldSkills UK plastering competition. The apprentice at IB Plastering impressed the judges with his technical ability.
Sam said: “It was a good experience, especially seeing all the other trades and their work. We had to showcase a bit of everything from running moulds, floating and skimming to beading up, and using casting plaster moulds and coving.”
Sam was one of just six competitors to reach the final.

EXPLORING THE ARTS OF BARCELONA
School for the Arts students took two weeks out of the academic year to gain an insight into life as an international freelancer in Barcelona, working in multi-disciplinary teams for a Spanish client.
The project brief was to create a cross-platform digital guide for visitors. They also managed to fit in workshops and explored the capital and largest city in Catalonia.
Students visited Park Guell, designed by Antoni Gaudi, the architect and innovator of Catalan Modernism, whose works include the world famous Sagrada Familia.
SPORTS TEAMS IN EUROPE
Sports students and staff were delighted to see the return of the annual fortnight’s training camps with Benfica, Portugal and Catalans Dragons in France.
The trips saw rugby teams coaching more than 60 junior Catalans players. Alongside altitude training, wrestling, weights and ice baths, the rugby team cycled the coastal path to the beautiful town of Collioure.
Meanwhile, those on the Football Development programme took a tour of the Estadio de Luz, home to the Benfica team. Between training sessions and friendly games they managed to fit in a sightseeing trip of Lisbon.

The level of your course depends on your GCSE results and the entry criteria of the course for which you are applying.
ENGLISH + MATHS = SUCCESS
SECURE YOUR FUTURE, UNLOCK ENGLISH AND MATHS
ESSENTIAL SKILLS FOR SUCCESS
Whether you want to be a bricklayer, business consultant or beauty therapist you will need English and maths.
English and maths are essential elements of all study programmes. Students who have not achieved grade 4 in English and Maths GCSE will need to re-sit.
English and maths skills are used in everyday life. Whether you are sending texts, paying for the bus or reading a train timetable, you are using English and maths. We are committed to helping you gain these essential qualifications, so you have the best possible chance in life and your future career.

We also have online resources to help you improve your skills. We will share these with you when you enrol. Interviews may include an English or maths test, so keep on practising those skills for success.
START YOUR DREAM CAREER AS AN
WHAT IS AN APPRENTICESHIP?
An apprenticeship is full-time employment, which includes completing a qualification, while earning a wage. Apprenticeships start at Level 2 and progress to degree level. They may last 12 or 48 months, depending on the learner and sector. For some apprenticeships, such as plumbing, you will attend college on a day-release basis. The entry requirements for apprenticeships vary, depending on the area you choose. Good maths and English grades are required for apprenticeships.
How much do apprentices get paid?
Employers pay every apprentice, as agreed in their contract of employment. The government sets a rate for the apprenticeship minimum wage - visit gov.uk/national-minimum-wage-rates to find out more. Employers may pay much more than this rate to ensure they have the best apprentice for their business.
We offer more than 70 apprenticeships in the following sectors:
• Accounting
• Beauty Therapy
• Business Administration
• Catering & Hospitality
• Childcare & Early Years
• Civil Engineering
• Construction Crafts (Brickwork, Joinery, Painting & Decorating, Plastering, Plumbing & Heating)
• Customer Service
• Digital Marketing
• Electrical & Electronic Engineering
• Electrical Installation
• Food & Drink Manufacturing
• Hairdressing
• Health & Social Care
Why should I become an apprentice?
An apprenticeship will help you build the skills, knowledge and confidence to start your career. Apprenticeships have many advantages, such as:
- hands-on relevant experience rather than classroom based study
- positive career prospects
- income
- paid holidays
£- no debt for degree apprenticeships
- support and guidance from your employer and assessor.
• Human Resources
• Mechanical Engineering
• Metal Fabrication

“We were a bit nervous to start with as it was our first work experience. We decided to be really organised and brought lots of equipment to make sure we had back-ups if there were any issues on the day,” said Leah.
“It was a confidence booster as we got to meet lots of people and we got some good feedback.”
Wigan Council’s Paul Gallagher, who organised the event, said:
“Leah and Phoebe were brilliant. It was good to see them suggest ideas, problem solve on the hoof, be assertive and gain confidence during the day.

CATERING FOR A DAY AT THE RACES
Catering student and former Albany Academy pupil, David Eubank, said:
“I really enjoyed working on such a large scale event. The fast paced environment helped to improve my multitasking skills.”
The learners, who were paid for their services, helped prepare vegetable soup with red wine vinegar dressing and crème fraiche for starter, a main course of parsnip puree, potato cake, chicken breast with buttered greens and a garnish of baby leek and shallots, followed by a treacle tart with vanilla mascarpone, meringue and berries.
Lecturer, Tara Johnson, added:
A 16-strong group of student chefs were thrown in at the deep end at one of Haydock racecourse’s biggest events of the year, catering for 15,000 - 18,000 spectators.
Supported by College tutors, students carried out their work experience creating a range of platters, carvery cuisine, afternoon teas and a three-course lunch.
“This was a fantastic opportunity for students and staff to get involved in a high-profile event.
“Our students did the College proud - the staff at the racecourse were impressed with how professional they were.”

GOLD AWARD FOR APPRENTICE PLASTERER
Apprentice plasterer Sam Dean scooped the Gold Award at the national finals of the Worldskills UK 2021 plastering competition.
The apprentice at IB Plastering, who has now secured a full-time position with the company, impressed the judges with his technical ability.
Sam said: “It was a good experience, especially seeing all the other trades and their work. I didn’t except to win but I guess the judges thought I was the best on the day. We had to showcase a bit of everything from running moulds, floating and skimming to beading up and using casting plaster moulds and coving.”
Sam was one of just six competitors to reach the final.
Sam’s College tutor, Michael Simm, added: “We are thrilled that Sam has achieved such a prestigious award for his plastering skills. He was up against tough competition from apprentices nationwide and has clearly shown the judges his highly developed precision skills. Well done Sam.”
Following in his footsteps is current Level 2 plastering apprentice, Kieran Roworth, who at the time of writing had reached the 2022 finals. The former Parklands High School pupil is hoping for more national award success to make it two in a row for the plastering department at the national finals in November.
STUDENT OF THE YEAR IN PAINTING AND DECORATING
Level 2 student Mia Major scooped a Student of the Year Award, despite having no prior skills in painting and decorating before she started the course.
As a hard working student who put 100 per cent effort into her practical and theory work, her positive attitude and punctuality were attributes that helped her stand out.
She has completed her first year at Level 2 and is now on the way to securing an apprenticeship.

Former school: Dean Trust Wigan
Course: Level 2 Technical Certificate Plastering/apprenticeship

FRENCH TRIP INSPIRES STUDENTS
The beautiful south east region of France was the location for students to not only take part in physical challenges, but also to find out more about how French public services are managed.
Students took a tour of the Fire and Rescue station in Argelès and tried out some of the equipment, led by their female fire chief – who was a great role model for our aspirational women fire fighters.
They also visited the Mayor of Pezella to find out more about how the local area of France is tackling climate change.
Leadership and communication skills were put to the test working with local rugby clubs, and physical challenges included cycling and mountain walking from coastal towns Argelès-sur-Mer to Collioure. To complete the trip students celebrated the longest day of the year at the annual Festival of Light.
POLICE ENRICHMENT PROGRAMME
The College is the first to develop an exclusive enrichment programme for public services students interested in following a career in the police.
Delivered by policing professionals, the Enrichment Programme prepares students with skills for higher level study. The programme covers search laws, arrest procedures and conflict management, scenario training and response, and uniform standards.
Gareth Hayes is Head of Sport and Public Services. He said:
“This is an exciting new offer for our students. The programme provides an insight into police training work. Students will complete simulated scenarios to develop their communication, teamwork and leadership skills in preparation for their next steps.
“The programme will be led by specialist staff and will be supported through our network of guest speakers from Greater Manchester Police.”
