T

he opportunity the youth have is amazing. It is a great and worthy Investment to focus on adding value to them. In this edition, we have different areas that can positively affect a young person. If you pick and apply these ideas, though the principles apply to all, as a young person, you

will improve your life greatly. For you who lives in close proximity to a young person, find it in your heart to mentor and invest in them. When you see a need they have, don’t wait for motivation. Fix the problems that you see and be a catalyst for the transformation you

want to see. You owe it to the next generation to add value. You can begin with applying these ideas shared here, and assisting a youth apply them.

YOUTH ENGAGEMENT FOR GLOBAL ACTION The theme of International Youth Day 2020, “Youth Engagement for Global Action seeks to highlight the ways in which the engagement of young people at the local, national and global levels is enriching national and multilateral institutions and processes, as well as draw lessons on how their representation and engagement in formal institutional politics can be significantly enhanced.

A

s the United Nations turns 75, and with only 10 years remaining to make the 2030 Agenda a reality for all, trust in public institutions is eroding. At the international level, against the backdrop of an increasingly polarized world, the international system of governance is currently undergoing a crisis of legitimacy and relevance. In particular, this crisis is rooted in the need to strengthen the capacity of the international system to act in concert and implement solutions to pressing challenges and threats (examples include some of the worst

contemporary conflicts and humanitarian emergencies, such as Syria and Myanmar, as

The aim of IYD 2020 is to shed light on the need to enable the engagement of youth by making local, national and global institutions more inclusive for the purpose of strengthening their capacity (and relevance) to achieve global action.

well as global challenges, such as the COVID-19 outbreak and climate change). Enabling the engagement of youth in formal political mechanisms does increase the fairness of political processes by reducing democratic deficits, contributes to better and more sustainable policies, and also has symbolic importance that can further contribute to restore trust in public institutions, especially among youth. Moreover, the vast majority of challenges humanity 12 | L I V E | August - September 2020 |

currently faces, such as the COVID19 outbreak and climate change require concerted global action and the meaningful engagement and participation of young people to be addressed effectively. The aim of IYD 2020 is to shed light on the need to enable the engagement of youth by making local, national and global institutions more inclusive for the purpose of strengthening their capacity (and relevance) to achieve global action.

This year’s IYD seeks to put the spotlight on youth engagement through the following three interconnected streams: 1. Engagement at the local/ community level; 2. Engagement at the national level (formulation of laws, policies, and their implementation); and, 3. Engagement at the global level.

HOW TO PROGRESS IN LIFE 6 TIPS

By Anngladys Gichuhi

14 | L I V E | August - September 2020 |

1. You need to be a self-starter. Have a positive attitude and take initiative. Don’t just sit

4. Get yourself a coach. A mentor will share his or her experiences with you, but a

back and complain. There are endless opportunities in this life, and you can seize them if you bear the right attitude.

coach will hold you accountable and partner with you to ensure that you achieve your goals. A coach will bring out the best in you.

2. Learn all you can. There are very many resources online, both free and paid. You can also learn from people through apprenticeship. 3. Seek mentorship in the areas that you would like to grow in. Look for someone of your gender who is excelling in your desired field - profession, ministry, financial, name it. You can have several mentors, one for each aspect of your life.

...seek God with all your heart, and observe His disciplines. They are good for you. Read His word and meditate upon it. Quiet your soul, listen to Him and obey Him. He can see way beyond your present circumstances, immediate environment and associations.

| August - September 2020 | L I V E | 15

5. Focus on one thing at a time and give it your best. That’s the only way to be truly efficient and productive. Some areas will surely suffer if you spread yourself too thin. 6. Finally, and above all, seek God with all your heart, and observe His disciplines. They are good for you. Read His word and meditate upon it. Quiet your soul, listen to

Him and obey Him. He can see way beyond your present circumstances, immediate environment and associations. Trust Him when He sheds light on an area of your character that you need to work on or a skill that you need to develop. Remember, He is omniscient and is working from the perspective of the big picture of your life. If you do these things and walk in integrity, you will surely have a great hope for your future because of the strong foundation that you will be building.

BAD COMPANY CORRUPTS GOOD MORALS As I grew up, I often heard my parents say that so-and-so had “fallen in with the wrong company. They told me this as a precautionary tale because that meant that this person was taking on the bad habits of the company he or she was keeping.

YOUTH & SALES By Cate Mwangi A big percentage of the adults in Africa and particularly Kenya have had to go through a sales job at one point in their lives. This could have been the first option presented to them as soon as they cleared high school. Most of them were told that, “...it’s just some job to hold as you await the major career you want to pursue...” or “...it is just for you to do something instead of being idle!” And boom! They landed a sales job without asking. For those who wanted to grow some thick skin quick, what better way than taking on sales so as to encounter the many No’s and toss the timidity. 28 | L I V E | August - September 2020 |

I

came to announce from the rooftops and mountains tops that Sales is not an occupation, but a profession, and a bona-fide profession at that. Just like there are professionals in Medicine, Law, Engineering, so does selling. Why? Am glad you asked. Professionals have rules. They have recognized patterns of working that produce predictable results and they also have organized bodies. It has therefore been proven through research that before a customer decides to buy from you, they follow a naturally consistent series

of steps and a predictable pattern that leads up to the final sale. If you take that pattern and build on it a body of knowledge and skills, then you got nothing short of a professional. This is where Flourish comes in to nourish you with these critical skills that help you as a youth to stay grounded and earn lots of money in this reputable career that has been thrown to the dogs. Handling objections and stalls will be a walk in the park as you get to build your career in selling.

I am Cate Mwangi, the founder of flourish Sales Training. I am so passionate about salespeople and my focus is to holistically transform the salesperson from being an amateur, transactional salesperson to becoming a superstar, proactive and professional consultant one at a time. At Flourish we are all about nourishing skills that ultimately lead to flourishing Sales. | August - September 2020 | L I V E | 29

THE HIDDEN TREASURE When going for social work, young people are encouraged to bring their energy so as to make meaningful impact in the place where they will be working. It could be in cooking, accounting, teaching or cleaning. One needs to strive to leave a footprint of their presence. It requires the young people to push themselves out of their comfort zone and do something meaningful for the community. I learnt this in a very personally manner.

MAJOR ON MAJOR: LIFE PRIORITIES Do you LIVE a Purposeful and Practical life? With all that we have to do in life, what are important things that if we focus on, will make our lives worth living? There are so many things we can do. You just need to be on the media and with friends. You will get overwhelmed with the many options present. In my 19 years’ experience of working with leaders and journeying with mentors, I came to the conclusion that there are about 16 key areas that individuals should focus on. This is especially key for the youth to focus and start with if they want the best in this life.

By Ernest Nyingi 40 | L I V E | August - September 2020 |

H

ere are 5 areas you can start with in living an intentional life.

1. Rediscover your purpose and vision You have a reason ‘why’ you are here in this life. You are meant to change lives with the kind of personality, abilities, gifting and experiences you have. As you notice needs, create a vision plan to meet them. You will be surprised with the kind of a blessing you can be.

You have an opportunity to influence people around your life. With a clear value system, you can make people better. 2. Realign your vision with values and disciplines For your vision to be fulfilled, it | August - September 2020 | L I V E | 41

will need you to have a value system. This means that are things you will decide to do and not to do. You must have discipline to keep these values. You will be tested on the moral principles you have chosen. 3. Resolve to live and lead the right way You have an opportunity to influence people around your life. With a clear value system, you can make people better. As you invest in learning and doing the right things, you will be amazed at opportunities that come your way to lead others. You also need to live excellently. Do your best, always. 4. Redeem your resources The way you handle your time, talents and treasure determines the quality of your life. As you manage these well, you start becoming a model worth following. You need an actual plan for each of these 42 | L I V E | August - September 2020 |

resources. This helps you live your vision and keep your disciplines. 5. Relate wisely. You will meet different people. Some come to support your vision and others to distract you. Get mentors and accountability relationships to enable you to live your dream. You don’t have to walk alone. You won’t make it by yourself.

You are meant to change lives with the kind of personality, abilities, gifting and experiences you have. As you notice needs, create a vision plan to meet them.

are learning from home, etc. As the youth of Kenya, how are you spending your time? Are you staying at home sulking, sleeping all day, or have you found new ways of communicating with your friends

and family? Have you found new and creative ways to keep yourself useful and inspired? I have observed on many instances that most Kenyan youth like to describe situations and even to respond to greetings in negative expressions. For example, when asked, ‘How are you?’ the commonest response is, ‘Not bad.’ instead of saying, ‘I am very well thank you.’ How can you make your days useful and meaningful? The key lies in the attitude that you adopt. Here are a few important tips that I would like to share with you.

To ensure that the book reading challenge remains attractive, you could ask the users to read two books per week and exchange ideas about what they read. INVEST IN YOUR SECONDS

By Andanyi Humphrey Blessings

a

Second is the SI unit of time, people grow in age yes but age changes with seconds and not years or months as people often think of. So to say, 50 | L I V E | August - September 2020 |

seconds are a very important unit in life and when you invest in them you will definitely reap the best out of everything you do. We are governed by different challenges but

one thing is for sure, your challenges are building a testimony for you. At times people cry and they say God has abandoned us. God doesn’t abandon people, I am very sure people are the ones who abandon Him. If anyone in this world can study the life of those we claim are rich or very rich, then you will understand that they are ever busy and

they have no time to nag their minds with useless and meaningless issues. That is basiclly how they became rich. Complainants don’t do anything and don’t get far in life, they are always opposing what others are doing and within no time they start begging from those they have been mocking. One thing that an idle mind does to someone

is to waste your time, getting involved in issues and arguments that lead us nowhere. I want to challenge you in particular, you do not need magic to become rich and you don’t need big certificates, you simply need yourself. When God created you, you were a complete unit of success and it’s your responsibility to harness

| August - September 2020 | L I V E | 51

this success and use it. However, the choices we make every second moulds people to different images and levels of failure and success. It’s quite obvious that people are ignorant and they don’t want to put attention into the experience of those who have gone before them. Books have been written and

words have been said and we are yet to see a generation given to Excellence as we are pushing towards. It’s about time we get the generation. Currently, there is a lot of careless and reckless talk and action. No one seems to be bothered why we are doing the wrongs we do today. Even though such are

52 | L I V E | August - September 2020 |

expected I still want to give you new hope that you will not be a victim of such behaviour. Let me mention something here that I feel is very important, we may really be arguing that God is there or he is not there, he can help or he cannot but the truth is that He is there and much willing to help us when

we request. If you design your minds for victory and you involve Him, then time is past tense; you will and must be a success definitely. With Him in control, you will be subjected to enumerated growth that only you can stop yourself from getting on the limits you want.

Invest in your second, but what are these you need to invest? You need to invest time in three categories, the first one is to invest time in gathering information and the positive information in particular. Two, you need to invest time in correction and improvements in your life. The third thing you need to invest time in is your work.

TURNING PASSION INTO PROFIT

Turning Passion into Profit has a nice ring to it but to me it is a tangible reality, having served people with my passion consciously for a decade now. Here are 6 Ps that you will find helpful on the journey.

By Frida Owinga 54 | L I V E | August - September 2020 |

1. Purpose: Why are you here? Purpose is not as elusive as people make it out to be. Starting point is believing that you are here for a purpose. Secondly, your purpose is not a destination; it is a progressive journey that you take while you are here. Some clues to finding it are - your strengths, activities you excel at, activities that irritate you and you are inclined to correct and activities that you are normally called to correct or help in.

Your passion ignites your purpose. 2. Programming Garbage in Garbage out. See what you WANT not what you have. We spend a lot of time thinking about what we don’t have. This creates a cycle of lack and want. Train yourself to see, imagine and think of what you want in your life and see your life begin to change. Not automatically of course, but you will begin to get ideas and if you take

action, the change kicks in. You must develop a vision for creating wealth and a strategy to ensure the vision is accomplished. A vision will help you define your values, become a better financial steward and also assist you in finding the right opportunities. 3. Playing Field. Ideally, you should identify the appropriate playing field for your passion for greatest impact. There are seven playing fields (you can

| August - September 2020 | L I V E | 55

do some research on the 7 mountains of Society on the internet to gain a better understanding) The 7 playing fields are Religion, Family, Education, Government, Media, Arts & Entertainment and Business. Identify where God has called you to serve and thrive there. 4. Performance: Unmatched performance equals unmatched pay. Many Businesses fail more because of lack of skills than

because of lack of money. Skills and tools can be acquired. Sharpen yourself daily. Papers are good but also go for personal development and aim to remain relevant in your industry. Build you brand in terms of competence and character not just logos and slogans. 5. People. You will need various categories of people. Associations that build you up and

56 | L I V E | August - September 2020 |

not tear you down. You will need mentors, people who have gone ahead of you and are willing to guide you. You may need to invest in coaches who will keep you accountable to ensure you get the results you desire. You will need to research and get the right target audience, because the clearer you are about who you are selling to, the more compelling and accurate your message can be. You will need alliances, because

in the business world today, it is wise to leverage the strength of other organizations to form strategic alliances. And finally, you will need the right people working for you. 6. Profit Engine - Discover your profit engine. In his book, From Good to Great, Jim Collins refers to the profit engine as the activity that is able to drive your economic engine. To put it simply, the activity that solves a problem for enough people who are willing to pay. You may be

good at singing but have you ever been asked to sing even for free? I guess you get the idea. It doesn’t matter where you are today, you can still turn your passion into profit, if you only make the decision and take consistent right action! Here’s to a Profitable life! he Society today is occupied by energetic youth who are determined to succeed but do not have avenues which they can exploit. Networking is necessary for the youth as it will help create connections between the youth and various stakeholders. Besides that, Networking has other benefits which may include the following. • It is a great platform to realize your vision. Most of the youth live in fantasies or dreams they wish to achieve. Networking can therefore unite youth who share the same vision hence

It becomes easy to link up with those who work in particular fields; these people might act as mentors, employers, or facilitators. This improves their chances of acquiring high profile friends. • Networking educates youth on various issues that affect their daily lives. It does not only boost their self-confidence, but also informs them on | August - September 2020 | L I V E | 59
