IN MANHOOD…IMAGE IS EVERYTHING. BY: Boniface Nganga
As a young man, I loved watching basketball. To excite me, all you needed to do was to invite me to watch a game of NBA that used to come on KBC on Saturdays at 1:30 pm. The adrenalin, the skill, the tenacity of the men who played inspired me and their muscular build up invigorated me even more.
A
s the game was showing, there was one advert that kept popping up on our television screens. It was the sprite soda advert. Its tagline was “Image is nothing, thirst is everything, obey your thirst.” In as much as I loved Sprite, I disagreed with the tagline of 16| L I V E | June - July 2020 |

manhood is IMAGE. A man who doesn’t understand in whose image He is to function remains a boy. A boy lives by instinct but a man lives by insight. Insight comes to a man when his aligns to the fact that He is the image of God. He is created to mirror the attitudes and attributes of God through his masculine life. Here are five helpful insights with the acronym I.M.A.G.E to evidence manhood standards.
real man is a male who anchors his convictions and commitments on the bedrock of truth. He purposes to live a life that exudes honor for God. Without truth, manhood is hollow, but with truth, manhood becomes holy and empowered. Truth is the maker of men. Be a man who loves truth, learns truth and lives by truth.
M - Maturity. Manhood starts when immaturity dies. To be the image of God, you must wake up to initiative and die to passivity. As men, we are created to be leaders with a demand for maturity and responsibility. Maturity is not increase in | June - July 2020 | L I V E | 17

f they fought on land the shark would lose. If they fought in water, the lion would lose, despite of him being the king of the jungle. He would lose not because he is weak but because he is in the wrong terrain.
Like the lion that loses in water, there are many of us who are losing in life. We lose, not because we are weak, but because we are not occupying the places of our purpose. It is because we find ourselves in the wrong terrain. A leader becomes a | June - July 2020 | L I V E | 25

While after lots of mentoring and overseas training, the turkey may finally learn to climb a tree, but by the time it climbs one tree, the squirrel will have wound down a forest. This is simply because the squirrel is in his place of purpose, he was created to climb trees.

of us for a particular purpose. He equipped you with gifts and talents which are the tools that will enable you fulfil that purpose. Those gifts and talents must be subjected to a certain environment for them to grow. If you get baobab seeds from the coast and plant them at the foot of
Mount Kenya, they certainly will not grow. You can water them, put fertilizer, spray them with pesticides and work hard to see them grow. Unfortunately, you will end up with a broken heart simply because they are not designed to grow in this environment. Like these seeds, our gifts are meant to flourish in certain environments. Environments that are aligned to our purpose. The greatest gift that God gave me was to align me to my purpose and to my winning terrain.
Our life pursuit therefore should be to identify the thing for which God created us to do.
When you are in your terrain, things that seem hard for others come easy for you. What others
break their backs to accomplish, you do without batting an eyelid and with excellence. You also find satisfaction, fulfilment and your existence has impact. There is providence in purpose. Our life pursuit therefore should be to identify the thing for which God created us to do. Every minute spent doing anything else draws you closer to taking to the grave, the immense potential that God has given you that can only be made manifest in the area of your purpose. Purpose is the original | June - July 2020 | L I V E | 27
intent for creation and a life that does not fulfil its purpose is a life lived fraudulently. Success is the fulfilment of the purpose and assignment for which you were created. Many of us however consider success as how well they are doing compared to what others have done. In truth you will always find someone doing better or worse than you, which makes of no effect that methodology. Sometime we are proud of what God is ashamed of. We try show Him what we have done, but He knows what we could have been and are capable of doing since He created you. Make it your goal to discover why you are here. Once you identify your ‘why,’ the ‘what’ and the ‘how’ become a walk in the park. Not knowing this will drive you down to your grave. The only way 28| L I V E | June - July 2020 |
to discover your why, is to discover the ‘who’ that created you, for He alone understands His original intent. Everything else is speculation at best and hearsay at worst. Find the ‘who’ and He will show you your ‘why’ and finally you can occupy the place of your purpose and that will be the beginning of becoming a leader.

FINDING JOY IN SINGLE PARENTING: BY: Ann Jane Mumbi
Janet was eighteen years old when she got married. Shortly after; she was expecting her first child. Eight months after, the earth-shattering news: her baby, the child she had prayed for and carried, was dead. Some years later, by God’s grace, she was expecting again, followed twenty months later by another child her husband never wanted because of financial constraints, and that was, so to say, the beginning of the end. 38| L I V E | June - July 2020 |
B
ut Janet held on, determined to accept this child as the gift it was. Their marriage was definitely on the rocks; Janet tried to do everything she could, to hold her marriage together but it got broken beyond repair. Her husband left. Within the same year, divorce followed. He remarried and three years later, he disappeared from their lives completely. This is one of the many stories that lead to single parenthood. Abandoned, you are left to raise, support and guide the children all by yourself. Things progressively get worse. You are subjected to bitter heartache, emotional and social scars of abandonment, suicidal inclinations, society bullying sets in, depression,
low self-esteem, name it. All in all, single parents need to keep their heads above water. Choose to move on! Fuel a life of joy in parenting.by resolving to look at life from a different perspective. Your circumstances do not make you. Change your attitude towards your circumstances and circumstances will change right before you. Despite parenting alone, realize that being a single parent is not the totality of who you are. You are more than what happened to you. Never stop fighting for your children, never stop praying, and never stop loving them. | June - July 2020 | L I V E | 39

THE ART OF PERSONAL LEADERSHIP Leadership is an art and the foundation of all leadership is personal leadership! This is one of the most important skills that anyone with a growth mindset needs to espouse and deliberately hone! In his book the 21 irrefutable laws of leadership, John C. Maxwell, a global leadership guru says that everything rises and falls on leadership! If you see a very successful or prosperous business entity, or organization, or nation or even a person, look at the leadership! And the vice versa is also true! Nations do not fail, organ- izations do not fail, people fail, their leadership skills fail; it is the leadership that fails the institution!

It is until the follower submits to the leadership of the leader that there can be progress in your life. Every leadership must be led by vision. It is the direction of leadership. Vision is your life compass and it directs your purpose, your goals, talents, gifts and endeavors. Have a personal vision that directs your daily endeavors. Accountability is key in making sure that you remain on track and don’t fall behind on your personal goals and vision. It will be prudent for you to have an accountability partner, mentor, coach, as an accountability system to cheer you and make sure your goals remain your priority! You are born to lead! Lead yourself, conquer the world!

There are many definitions of vision. I like simplified things, its good for everyone.

Myles Monroe resonates with my thinking about vision when he says that, ‘

Write it down, without a worry of the many words you will use. This process is a vital one. Most professionals work in a organization that has a vision, and yet they don’t have their own. Most business people haven’t aligned their vision, hence don’t see how far they can go. When problems come, and they do, they give up on that idea. You need to develop a clear vision, personally, professionally and corporately. (Don’t borrow another person’s vision, a vision needs context, and it is about you.) My vision is empowering leaders and organizations to be purposeful and productive for posterity. I believe and support the course of individuals discovering and deploying their vision and legacy.

back to this truth l hold dear. “The more clear the aim, the more clear the claim.” You cannot claim what is not clear. You cannot achieve what you don’t clarify. Let me personalize this conversation to you with a few processing questions. Is your vision clear enough that it energizes you and others towards it’s fulfilment? What are you willing to do or not do for the sake of the vision you have? You need to have clarity of your vision in order to disqualify everything else that doesn’t support that end.

Solomon, a wise historical king said, “Without vision people throw off self discipline.”

Prime Principle Three:
Do you find yourself ‘Vision competent’? It is one thing to know what you want to do and another to do it, and another thing to do it very well. Fortunately, there are resources (people, programs, books etc) around your life that can assist you do ‘get there’.

relate with. What will you do today, and everyday to grow in competence, especially where your vision and values are concerned?
Prime Principle Four: Dont just have your eyes to look, also make sure you also see. You need a heart vision.
What do you see? What is your heart vision? Ensure you get clarity also in your heart. The vision should align with who you are. I will later talk about a personal development concept called PAGE. You should own your vision because it is part of you.
