FREE YOURSELF Editor's Note Welcome to the September edition of UKUVUSA!
What started as an idea to keep my mind busy and to help quell the voices while I'm trying to sleep, is turning in to something much much more.
There's a sense of freedom and enthusiasm in sharing
other peoples amazing stories, along with some of my own.

often we find ourselves wrapped in our own chains of limitation, too scared or hesitant to listen and to pursue the calling of our inner voice.
For me, creation is liberation, and without the constant mental pivots that have been happening almost on a daily basis, I have no doubt I would either be sucking back on way too much of grandpas ol cough medicine, or worse, be playing an infinite game of chess against my self conscious in a very padded white room wearing one of those hug me all day jackets.
Life is what you make it, get out there and slay it!

So what’s your preference… shooting people or places?
snake:
People, definitely. I like to document people that I have
access to through my music career and lifestyle. The more mundane everyday sort of scenarios that I document with these people I feel become so much more interesting to look at when you add a couple of years to give it some context.
josh:

Have you spent much time in this neck of the woods prior to that and in your opinion, how photogenic is the landscape?
snake:
The Dis Hoe Ons Rol production did
however see us travelling through the whole of South Africa and if there are any places that I somehow missed in my career as a travelling musician DHOR filled the gaps. The Wild Coast is definitely one of my favourite parts of SA. It’s interesting to see how light falls and shapes differently across the country. As an example, I always thought that some of my favourite photographers up the coast’s photos were influenced by a certain colour grading style but after shooting there I realised that is just what the light does.
josh:
Speaking of DHOR and the genuinely
thirsty individuals involved, how hard was it to find a work / beer balance on that road trip and how much of that footage can never see the light of day?
snake:
Hahaha! That production was long
and hard and it’s because we didn’t make it easy for ourselves. We covered the whole of South Africa on Motorcycles in a 5 week period and squashed all of that into only 10 episodes. Meaning that on average we covered about 200-300km a day, had a call schedule of 2 to 3 towns a day, with about 4 interviews, 2 activities and all the while having to do setups and re-shoots of the boys travelling on the bikes. We had way too much content and could’ve easily have made at least 20 episodes worth of TV. The days started at around 4am a lot of the time and we only stopped shooting late at night and sometimes Jack Parow also had gigs to play (which featured in the TV show). We somehow also managed to find time to sink a lot of drinks which meant sleep was a very rare commodity during the production. Priorities, right?

“Celebrate finish lines not finish times” and this is truly what this trail event is about.
josh:
With the K2C being a collaboration between
Outhere Trails and Crawford’s Beach Lodge, what was the inspiration behind putting an event like this together?
liam:
After running the entire coastline from Wild
Coast Sun to Port Alfred in varied stages, there is no section for a one day event that offers so much in so many varied aspects than this route anywhere in S.A. Outhere Trails has a great following so together with one of the best hotels in the business, it was a match made in heaven.
josh:
So with it being in its 3rd year now, what do
you feel has attributed to the on-going growth and success of the event?
liam:
No matter how good the event and the route is,
nothing beats the finish line. I always say: “Celebrate finish lines not finish times” and this is truly what this trail run/walk is about. The camaraderie on the route is incredible, but nothing quite beats the camaraderie at the finish line with a few cold beers, your feet dangling in a crystal clear pool, the smell of a gourmet dish and the sweet sounds from a local muso on his geet! (You’re up for a song too)
josh:
haha! Yeah it's never a good idea to have a
guitar around when iv had a few Castle Lites... Now there’s absolutely no question that the route is along some of the most beautiful scenic landscape in the area, so for the budding athletes out there who might be on the fence as to whether their post-covid fitness level can manage the challenge, what are the fairly tricky parts to be aware of and what strategic tips can you share on how best to tackle those sections?
liam:
Fit or unfit, there is NO cut-off time! It is
tough, but then again who remembers the easy runs. The stretch between Pullens Bay and Bosbokstrand is the most challenging place, but thereafter a flat 9km beach section awaits. At the K2C you earn your race garment honestly. If you are not up to it we have a 5km beach run for the “Not so FIT but want to feel part of the experience”. These are the people who then do the full run the following year!
UKUVUSA
SEPTEMBER 2020

Enjoy the freedom, enjoy the company, enjoy the route… whether you are doing the 5km or the 33km, walking, running or crawling, just get OUT THERE!
josh:
Naturally the safety and security of all entrants
is always top priority, so what protocols have been put in place in terms of COVID regulations, like social distancing for the START line for example?
liam:
We will apply all the rules required and will also
have a staggered start with one minute intervals. Once you have left the start line, social distancing will naturally occur and I obviously don't have to go in to too much detail about how good the fresh air and exercise is for you. Alderson Ambulance Services also play a massive role to the success of the event and the safety of all involved and their presence gives me 100% peace of mind and allows me to concentrate on my job on the day, which is ensuring everyone is having a great time.
josh:
In terms of trail runs around the East London
area, how does the K2C stack up with regards to its popularity among the running fraternity, and does it get pretty competitive?
liam:
We are fortunate to have many trail runs and
Outhere Trails together with Old Selbornian Road Runners, host some of the top events in the Eastern Cape. There are too many to mention, but the Arminel Hogsback Half is one of the toughest, most incredible mountain trails and we are also working closely with Matola Private Game Reserve, so watch this space. Now that Crawl (Mark Crawford) is an organiser and not a competitor on the day, it will be very mellow as he is our Beep Beep of beach trails. That said, everyone is always racing whether it be against something, someone or their Garmin.
josh:
Any final words of motivation and
encouragement to the entrants out there signing up to do their first K2C?
liam:
It’s all about getting OUT THERE, your pace is
not important and the pain will fade away, but the pride of accomplishment will last for 365 days. Enjoy the freedom, enjoy the company, enjoy the route…whether you are doing the 5km or the 33km, walking, running or crawling, just get OUT THERE!

Like so many families out there, both our livelihoods were catastrophically impacted as of 1 April 2020 and we found ourselves in a somewhat desperate financial predicament, which can only breed more stress, pressure and tension. We took stock of where we were, what we had and who we are and formulated a plan to, above all, mentally survive the ordeal and come out as stronger individuals and stronger partners. life in lock down Written
by
Evie steenekamp
We had no idea what to expect when the 21 day lock down was announced in March 2020, due to the COVID-19 global pandemic. What we were sure of though, is that we had to find a purpose for our time in isolation. Something to distract us from the initial fear for our family’s health, and of course the distress of our financial survival. We were fortunate that we had a few things that made our experience a little easier.
The first was that Josh and I did spend a lot of time together at home before lock down. Most relationships aren’t really built on the expectation that you will spend all your time together, but we’ve worked together throughout our relationship, so dealing with being in each other’s space for prolonged periods of time wasn’t much of a concern. I think we manage it pretty well, we’ve found a good balance. However, being confined to our home with a toddler did pose some interesting challenges at times.

"with lock down in full swing the bunny was feeling just as cash strapped as the rest of us." The second was that we stay in a small community on the Wild Coast. It’s one of the most beautiful places to live, and although we couldn’t be near our neighbors, we could still see them, and talk to them. It was the most amazing thing to listen to a family in our estate let rip on their trombones at 6pm every evening, and then hear the cheers from fellow residents after the performance. Heart-warming! We also don’t have pets, but our neighbors dogs have become part of our family and having animals around brings so much joy! Dougie and Chloe always had access to the house, and by Sage’s order, their water bowl stayed filled.
Thirdly, our Deck. The best part of our house! We spent as much time as we could out there, mostly chasing our daughter, she loves a good run. We spent so many of our evening’s braaing and sitting at the top of the skate ramp watching the sunset.
We also celebrated some important occasions during lock down. Easter was a fun one! We got into the spirit by painting white coated eggs with food colouring. The visit from the Bunny was certainly heavily anticipated in our house, and with lock down in full swing the bunny was feeling just as cash strapped as the rest of us.

Luckily, the Paas Haas went a bit overboard with choccies the year before, so there was no need to buy much and the thrifty Bunny repurposed most of the eggs for an awesome hunt!
e g Sa 3! d e n r tu Sage turned 3! This special day was filled with whatever she wanted to do, so we committed our first crime as a family... a very quick sneaky beach walk. We just had to. We also made piñata cupcakes filled with smarties, danced, sang and made sure our little girl had a birthday to remember. We will naturally of course have another 3rd Bday for her as soon as we can get the family around, but don't tell her that!
We said goodbye to Chloe. The friendliest, coolest natured little animal. Her family moved away. If you watch the

"We played skittles, skated, did yoga and Josh taught sage to box."
An appreciation for being strong and healthy. An appreciations For nature and being outside. An appreciation for freedom.
Evie
I can’t remember there being moments where we had nothing to do. Filming and editing the videos was an all day affair and while Josh was doing that, I had to keep Sage occupied and it just seemed like either one of us was always cooking something. We played skittles, skated, did yoga and Josh taught sage to box. Sometimes while Sage slept we had date night drinks in the garage coming up with recipe ideas.
It’s crazy to think that that was our “normal” for a while, and at a bit of a low point, I did imagine what I’d spend my lotto winnings on if I hit the jackpot. I had moments of sadness about everything that had happened and what so many of us lost. It all changed so quickly. I missed everyone. Just being around people.
But I want to look back on it all and remember the milestones we hit as a family, and everything we overcame.
This experience needs to be a reminder of the appreciation we have for the ones we love and care about.

Wild Hearts... wild coast words & images : Huw Morris
Not only is the Wild Coast the unruly, uniquely beautiful little sister of it's regional siblings - it is a land that possesses people who have the hugest hearts. I know this because I drive a car that builds me up, by breaking down. Some of our best adventures in this old Landy Defender have been waiting for tow trucks to arrive. Kicking stones on the side of some remote road is a great way to find out who your friends are... and on the Wild Coast I've made many.

STEAK ON A SPADE Josh Steenekamp Cooking in the Apocalypse
"MY GO TO IS IMPALA FILLET, BUT ANY VENISON OR BEEF FILLET WILL WORK JUST AS WELL"
No you cant use the spade that's lying around your garage, go buy a NEW spade... not a shovel... a spade! Before using, you need to burn all the black toxic paint off the flat end, so build yourself a FIRE, let it sit right in the flames and burn clean. My go to is impala fillet, but any venison or beef fillet will work just as well, but it must be fillet, as it needs to be rare. Pour some olive oil on to a board, crack lots of black pepper and sea salt and roll the fillet to coat.

"JUST DON'T BE A COWBOY AND TRY SOMETHING NEW FOR AN ANNIVERSARY OCCASION OF 30 GUESTS... THAT'S JUST ASKING FOR KAK... TRUE STORY!" For anyone who enjoys cooking over an open fire, there are some really creative ways to turn the average braai, in to an awe inspiring event, leaving your mates reeling in the wake of your neanderthal talents of taming the Red Flower. Don't be scared, be bold, think big and remember... the best way to learn is to fail. Just don't be a cowboy and try something new for an anniversary occasion of 30 guests... that's just asking for kak... true story! UKUVUSA
