Nothing comes close to this eagerly anticipated weekend of inspirational talks and cracking imagery by wildlife photographers at the top of their game. I wouldn’t miss it for the world. Assembling so many experts in one place at the same time is no mean feat – especially when their natural habitats tend to be in some of the wildest and remotest places on earth – but we’re making the most of it with an exceptional programme packed with more lectures than ever before. Rainforest canopies, the best pictures taken by accident, Lake Tanganyika, keeping creative, Estonian wetlands, the world’s smallest fox in the world’s largest desert, copyright issues in a digital world, glorious landscape photography and working with primates are just a few of the wide-ranging topics we’ll be covering. We’ll also be hearing from some of the winners of this year’s Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition. The amateur sleuths among you will have noticed our new name. The event used to be known as WildPhotos, but now we’re reflecting
the fact that it is part of Wildscreen, the charity that promotes nature conservation through awe-inspiring wildlife imagery. Many of you may already be aware of its work through the Wildscreen Film Festival, the world-renowned international forum for the wildlife filmmaking industry, but it has all sorts of other initiatives (have a look at some of the details below). The other change is that the original twoday event has been extended to three days (though my guess is that even this won’t be long enough). Friday is dedicated to a series of stimulating and informative workshops and masterclasses on everything from camera-trap and macro photography to processing your pictures and building an effective photography business. Please see pg20 for more details. It’s a great honour to be the compère, once again, and I do hope you’ll enjoy the weekend as much as I enjoy hosting it. Mark Carwardine COMPERE

Having travelled the world photographing rare and endangered species in truly wild places, from rainforest canopies to underwater kelp forests, Tim has seen things that few others have. He's also learnt hard lessons about how to – and how not to – capture truly wild images.
T TIM LAMAN USA
Contributing photographer, National Geographic Magazine Research Associate in Ornithology, Harvard Museum of Comparative Zoology Fellow, International League of Conservation Photographers
im Laman, a wildlife photojournalist with a passion for exploration, is renowned for bringing back pictures of never-before-photographed species and behaviour. He uses photography and, more recently, cinematography as the tools to tell stories of rare and endangered wildlife. He is also a dedicated conservationist, believing that photography has great power to influence. A field biologist by training, Tim’s pioneering research in the rainforest canopy in Borneo, which included scaling colossal trees more than 500 times, led to a PhD from Harvard University and his first major article for National Geographic in 1997.

He has since produced more than 20 conservation-focused features for the magazine, and he spends much of every year on expeditions to study and photograph the biodiversity of the Earth's remote wild places. His major project – eight years in the making – has been to document all 39 of the world's birds of paradise in the wild with scientist Edwin Scholes, resulting in a landmark book, Birds of Paradise. Described by Sir David Attenborough as 'truly breathtaking’, the project
required visits to more than 50 field sites across New Guinea where Tim set up elaborate remote control systems for his cameras, or climbed to the canopy to capture previously unseen views of the birds. His latest endeavour in collaboration with his wife, primatologist and Boston University professor Cheryl Knott, is the documentation of the behaviour of wild orangutans in Borneo and Sumatra. Tim is a recipient of the North American Nature Photography Association's Outstanding
Nature Photographer Award and his pictures have received recognition on numerous occasions in the annual Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition and Nature’s Best International Photographic Awards. He is regarded by his peers as one of the most accomplished of the world’s wildlife photographers and, four years on from his bird-filled presentation at WildPhotos 2010, makes a welcome return to deliver the Wildscreen Photography Festival Keynote.

Different styles for different audiences SUNDAY, 12:35-13:00 8 WILDSCREEN PHOTOGRAPHY FESTIVAL 2014
How imagery and story-telling can change public perception of the smaller majority by portraying them as the beautiful, complex characters they are. Piotr is a Polish-born entomologist, photographer, conservationist and author. A research associate at Harvard University, USA, he is currently working on the Gorongosa National Park restoration project in Mozambique. As a photographer, he strives to promote appreciation and conservation of invertebrates – insects, arachnids and their kin – by capturing both their beauty and roles as often critically important members of the Earth's ecosystems. A founding member of the International League of Conservation Photographers (ILCP), Piotr's photographs and nature writing have been published around the world. His award-winning 2005 book The Smaller Majority illustrates a multitude of threats faced by invertebrate animals.
Exploring different ways to raise awareness of threatened amphibians and reptiles through storytelling, art and relationships. Robin is a photographer, an author and a conservationist, blending science and art to give a voice for conservation, especially that of endangered reptiles and amphibians. He has a PhD in biodiversity conservation and is currently conservation officer with the Amphibian Survival Alliance, Rainforest Trust and Global Wildlife Conservation, using storytelling and photography to help challenge perceptions and inspire change. Robin co-founded Frame of Mind to empower youth to connect with their natural and cultural worlds through visual storytelling, providing a platform for marginalized young people in Haiti to tell their story. He is an associate fellow of the International League of Conservation Photographers, and his images have appeared in a broad suite of publications from Telegraph Magazine to Terre Sauvage.

BRUNO D’AMICIS ITALY LITTLE FOX, BIG CHALLENGE
How to tell a story and when to count your costs SATURDAY, 12:40-13:05
Fascinated by nature since very young, Nick's interest in natural history has driven almost everything he’s done since, as a biologist, filmmaker and stills photographer. He expected to work full-time in conservation but got side-tracked for ten years at Cambridge and Oxford Universities, earning a PhD and doing further research on animal behaviour. Moving into wildlife filmmaking in 1987, he worked first for the BBC Natural History Unit on David Attenborough’s The Trials of Life and then went on to direct and produce many wildlife, science and conservation films through independent companies for the BBC and major broadcasters worldwide. Nick has a special interest in documenting UK conservation projects. He contributed to 2020VISION with portfolios covering the UK crane reintroduction, wetland wildfowl, urban bugs, birds and Bioblitzes.
Photographing the world’s smallest fox in the world's largest desert was an endeavour fraught with problems – from sandstorms to a revolution – but revealed a story that needed to be told. The lesson? The most satisfying rewards are the personal ones. A wildlife biologist by training, Bruno wanted to inspire people about nature conservation rather than just practise it and so became a photographer and writer. He specialises in wilderness areas and photography that gives a true feel of animals in the wild, and he also documents wildlife research and conservation issues. Bruno is a fellow of the International League of Conservation Photographers, was a Wild Wonders of Europe photographer and regularly contributes to environmental initiatives, magazines and books. He was a first-prize winner in this year's World Press Photo contest. WILDSCREEN PHOTOGRAPHY FESTIVAL 2014 9

Using the camera to answer questions and make discoveries SUNDAY, 10:45-11:10 10 WILDSCREEN PHOTOGRAPHY FESTIVAL 2014
Africa's vast inland sea, Lake Tanganyika – the world’s freshwater Galapagos – a fountain of evolution, with more than 1000 species found nowhere else. But it's also a remote and dangerous area. Angel has a mission: to expose the lake’s wonders and show the world what needs to be saved. Since training as a marine biologist and a scientific photographer, Angel has spent the past 20 years photographing underwater environments, both freshwater and marine. He is a contributor to many international books and magazines, including National Geographic, has been a prize-winner in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year and GDT competitions, and also works as a cameraman and scientific adviser for film companies such as the BBC. Angel specialises in telling stories about the aquatic environment and our dependency on it, and aims to blend art with science in every image he takes.
Photography has become a tool that not only reveals new behaviour but can also answer the questions Alex can't stop asking. And with understanding comes the chance to take that special picture. Alex's signature style in nature photography is to select the setting, light, and behaviour that tells a story about a particular species, captures its essence, and reveals overlooked sides of its natural history. Much of his photographic effort is spent searching for that perfect moment that combines it all in a single frame. A professor of evolutionary biology at the University of Arizona in the United States, Badyaev is also a regular contributor to several international natural history magazines. His scientific work, nature photography, and popular science writing have been recognized by major international awards and fellowships.

Working with primates requires politeness and well as patience, and empathy as well as skill. Having photographed more than 20 species, including both great apes and monkeys, Fiona reveals what she's learnt about both portraiture and character. Fiona specialises in photographing primates in the wild, working in partnership with her husband Anup Shah. Her style is to photograph each as a personality, photographing them as she would a human in a studio, though totally in the wild, sensitively and without interference. She works mainly on long-term projects, the most major of which is the portrayal of the famous Gombe chimpanzees, undertaken over a number of years in conjunction with Anup, which has resulted Tales from Gombe – out in October. Articles and portfolios featuring her work have been published in magazines including Geo, Smithsonian and, in the near future, National Geographic.
The drive is to be out there in the wild. The satisfaction is capturing the mood. The mark of success is for viewers to feel it, too. Editor-in-chief and founder of the naturephotography magazine LoFo, Sven was also one of the founders of the national nature photography website. He is passionate about wetlands and wetland conservation and has produced four books featuring the landscapes and wildlife of Estonia and one book showing aerial views from Riga and its surroundings. His favorite subject in nature photography is the Ural owl, which he has been working with for more than eight years and which was the subject of a National Geographic feature. Sven was a Wild Wonders of Europe photographer, which saw him focusing on the great grey owl and the Northern Lights in the Riisitunturi National Park in Finland, and has been widely published in Europe.

That combination of nature, environment and coincidence SATURDAY, 12:15-12:40 12 WILDSCREEN PHOTOGRAPHY FESTIVAL 2014
How to learn from the past and then from your own work. Joe has been a leading light of British landscape photography since 1989, when he had his first London exhibition at the Royal Festival Hall. He has worked freelance for the National Trust for more than two decades, creating images that have helped redefine the way the British landscape is seen at home and abroad. His written work appears in the online photography magazine On Landscape (of which he is a co-founder), and he has written a number of books. First Light, a Landscape Photographer's Art is studied in schools and colleges, while Scotland’s Mountains, a Landscape Photographer's View is seen as a classic. Joe has been a judge for Wildlife Photographer of the Year and is an honorary Fellow of the RPS. Additionally, he makes almost all the prints shown and sold at his Northallerton gallery.
Why special pictures are so rare, and how to see the whole picture. A landscape architect by training and originally from Hungary, Orsolya met her partner Erlend Haarberg in Norway in 2004 while studying beavers for a PhD. It was then that she decided to turn her passion for photography into a profession. Since then, she and Erlend have worked as a team, based in Norway and specializing in landscape and wildlife photography in the Nordic countries. Together, she and Erlend have published three books: Lapland – the Alaska of Europe, Iceland – Land of Contrasts and Iceland in All its Splendour. In her work, Orsolya chooses to portray animals undisturbed as part of their environment, and she looks for the detail or the unexpected moment of light that adds atmosphere, drama or magic to a landscape. She has twice been awarded the title Hungarian Nature Photographer of the Year.

Opening eyes on Romania’s wild heritage SATURDAY, 10:25-10:50
SAM HOBSON UK
The inspiration was learning how to see things differently. The revelation was the wealth of nature on his doorstep. The challenge is how to show others what Romania has to offer. Born in 1989, the year of the Romanian revolution, Zoltan grew up in the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains in Transylvania, which inspired in him a passion for nature and the outdoors. He started taking photographs while at school and, with the help of a loan, came to the UK to study wildlife and environmental photography. It was then that he realised just how rich the wildlife of his own country was. Now a committed conservation photographer, Zoltan's goal is to reveal to the people of Romania the importance of their natural heritage and over the past few years, he has won a number of awards, including the grand prize in the 2013 Milvus Nature Photography Competition.
There is huge potential for creative wildlife photography in cities – if you retrain your eye to spot the opportunities and invest in time rather than high-end equipment and friends in the right places rather than longhaul travel. As a youngster, it was the stag beetle, hedgehog and fox visitors to his London garden that gave Sam a passion for wildlife, and it was through tracking the animals in his neighbourhood that he has developed a nose for a story. Now based in Bristol and working as a wildlife cameraman as well as a photographer, his stories remain focussed on urban natural history, published in the mainstream press as well as magazines such as BBC Wildlife.

Jim presents a personal reflection on the magic of photography – and the creative struggle of working for yourself. Jim travelled the world as a photographer with National Geographic for more than 25 years, resulting in 19 magazine stories, several TV features and 19 book projects. His 'North Woods Journal' feature contained the most photographs (96) the magazine had ever published in one story. He has twice been named Magazine Photographer of the Year by the National Press Photographers Association and he was the recipient of the World Achievement Award from the United Nations in recognition of his use of nature photography to raise public awareness for the environment. Jim's best-selling books include Brother Wolf, White Wolf and Chased by the Light, and four of his images were recently chosen to represent the 40 most important nature photographs of all time.
Discover the creative potential of shooting time-lapse sequences and learn practical tips from the field. Paul is a wildlife filmmaker, nature photographer and a determined time-lapse enthusiast, who specialises in producing short time-lapse nature films. Many processes in nature are too slow to observe with the naked eye, but when speeded up – whether a flower opening or a rainbow appearing in a storm – a magical new world unfolds. For the past two years, Paul has been working in the Dutch Oostvaardersplassen nature reserve on the feature film The New Wilderness (the highest grossing natural history film in the Netherlands), for which he created all the time-lapse sequences. His current project involves mixing time-lapse techniques, with aerial and underwater footage in order to tell the story of the nutrient cycle on the coast of Alaska in a fascinating new way.

Whatever your subject, whatever your style, there are ways to earn a living. Alexander explains how to find your niche… Alexander took his first pictures under water aged nine. Thirty years on, he is Britain's best-known underwater photographer. A marine biologist, with a PhD, his love of diving and travel and his drive for discovery made photography the perfect career, which it has been for the past 10 years. He has had more than 400 articles published, and his books include Reefs Revealed, which won the International Grand Prize for the best book of underwater photographs. He currently writes monthly columns on underwater photography for Sports Diver (USA), Diver Magazine (UK) and Wild Planet (UK) and contributes to Ocean Geographic Magazine (Australia). Alex is fascinated by technology, as far as it enables him to take new original images, and he is the inventor of the Magic Filters designed for available underwater light.
A photojournalist's view of the challenges of making a living in a web-based publishing market. Nick has worked mainly as a photojournalist for the past 18 years. His work blends elements of landscape photography and photojournalism to give a new perspective on environmental issues. The Arctic has become a focus, with the support of organisations such as Greenpeace International. And his recent work aims to tell the story of a changing landscape at the epicentre of global warming and give an insight into the lives of those other 'messengers', the scientists who live and work in the region. Nick's roots are in newspaper and magazine photography. He continues to be published by international titles including National Geographic, Geo and The Sunday Times Magazine, while ‘Pictures of the year' selections by Newsweek and Time have included Nick's images.
