Welcome to Wildscreen Film Festival 2014

A

s the new CEO of Wildscreen, it’s an honour to welcome the natural history filmmaking industry back

to Bristol. The Wildscreen Film Festival continues to be the must-attend event in the calendar and you can look forward to

six days of talks, exciting workshops, thought-provoking debates, exclusive screenings of extraordinary films and a feast of new technology. For the past 32 years, the Wildscreen Film Festival has

masterclasses than ever before. I’m also delighted to announce the launch of our new Arkive Exchange project at this year’s event. This initiative will empower conservation organisations with free and affordable photos and footage. You’ll be finding out more about how you can help contribute to this vital initiative over coming days. Of course, none of this would be possible without the generous sponsorship, help and support provided by our sponsors, partners and volunteers. In particular, I’d like to extend my sincere thanks to BBC Earth, BBC Worldwide and Discovery for their invaluable support as principal sponsors. I’m also immensely grateful to Bristol City Council for their continued support of the Festival over the years. The Wildscreen Film Festival has an extraordinary

innovation and business, with more workshops and

Caroline Copsey, Wildscreen CEO

It’s the best one yet! With more than 100 events and film screenings, this year’s Festival is set to be the busiest and best yet. We’ve assembled a line-up of terrific speakers, including Sir David Attenborough (p22), Pixar’s Matthew Luhn (p27) and renowned environmental journalist George Monbiot (p31). There’s a chance to quiz the filmmakers behind the Panda Award-nominated films during the Inside story sessions, while our This is what we want… debates see the industry’s big players tackle burning business issues. We hope you enjoy the event as much as you did in 2012 and if you’ve never been or haven’t been for a while, I promise you’ll be surprised with what you find!

www.wildscreenfestival.org The Festival offers a full programme of thought-provoking seminars, technology masterclasses, practical workshops and exclusive film screenings. To help guide you through the week’s events, we’ve selected some sessions that explore this year’s key themes: innovation, business and conservation. This is just the tip of the iceberg though, and you can find the full run-down in our complete event diary, from p20.

Innovation and technology

Big Ideas

An audience with Sir David Attenborough & Anthony Geffen Sunday 19th, 14:00, p22 Sir David Attenborough and Anthony Geffen of Atlantic Productions are leading innovators in 3D,4K and CGI natural history documentaries. They have collaborated on more than ten projects using new technology and have won major awards, including two BAFTAs and three Emmys. They’ve also picked up one or two Panda Awards between them, and Natural History Museum Alive is nominated in five categories this year. Join Maggie Brown from The Guardian as she talks to David and Anthony about their cutting-edge work, including the forthcoming mini-series Conquest of the Skies 3D, an exploration of the evolution of flight. More business sessions: The daily ‘This is what we want…’ sessions see panels of industry VIPs debate some of the big issues and offer advice for getting projects off the ground. On Thursday Wildscreen FILM Festival 2014

the topic is how to sell shows internationally: who to approach, getting your rights right, funding issues and more. Hear from our panels of experts on what options are out there.

Inside story: Campaign and Environment & Conservation Awards Wednesday 22nd, 15:15, p35

In addition to running sessions devoted to sustainable TV production (p39) and the relationship between conservationists and the media (p34), we’re screening some of the most talked-about environmental films. In one of Wednesday’s Inside story sessions (p35), you’ll be able to see clips from six Panda Award nominees and hear how they’re making a difference. For the Campaign Award, Maarten van Rouveroy van Nieuwaal (Greenpeace) will be on the panel to talk about Greenbees, Shark Girl along with Verity White (Director) who’ll be discussing Ren-Kyst Got a Spare Afternoon? and Kire Godal (Producer/Director) for Lion Guardians. Suzanne Harle (Green Planet Films) and Gisela Kaufman (Producer/Director) will be on hand to answer questions about their respective Environment & Conservation Award-nominated films, Sand Wars and Shark Girl.

The Wildscreen Film Festival is an unmissable opportunity to network, forge partnerships, promote films and seal distribution deals. Whether you’ve pre-booked one of our speed pitching slots or you’ve set up a meeting in the delegate lounge or one of the Festival’s other venues, you can be sure of a relaxed atmosphere in which to do business. Bristol is regarded as the ‘Green Hollywood’ thanks to its 50-year relationship with the BBC’s Natural History Unit, and the fact that a substantial number of the world’s best independent wildlife media production companies call it home. This makes it the perfect place to meet the funders, buyers and commissioners who can help to get your production off the ground.

Two new categories are making their debut in the Panda Awards (p42). The Bundu Youth Award is for 17 to 24-year-old wildlife filmmakers and is part of our commitment to support emerging talent. Additionally, the Earth Sciences Award has become the NHK Science Award to encapsulate the wide range of science-based films being produced that explore the natural world.

Industry snapshot Wildscreen Advisory Council members Brian Leith and Jörn Röver offer their take on what the industry is doing right and where there’s room for improvement

W

hen it comes to natural history filmmaking, Brian Leith, Creative Director and Executive Producer at Brian Leith Productions has pretty much done it all. From indie films to BBC NHU Board membership and back again. As a result, his view on natural history film and television is worth listening to. Six years ago, in an interview with Robin Hellier for WildFilmHistory, Brian made this observation about the changes he’d seen over his career: “I think the diversity of what we’re making has increased and I think that’s very good… That 16mm rein of control and power over the wildlife film industry through the ’60s, ’70s, ’80s, ’90s, I think we will not see it again. Within another blink of an eye we’ll all be recording on P2, hard disk, Wildscreen FILM Festival 2014

high definition cameras, seeing new technology for editing that footage and viewing rushes. The whole thing is changing so rapidly, it’s terrifying actually.” So how does he see it in 2014? “On the plus side, it’s continuing to diversify very impressively,” he says, “spreading its tentacles into all sorts of new media, from giant screen to web-based, as well as providing new TV formats. “On the minus side, it is,

“There are many terrific stories out there – science stories and conservation stories – which are simply not being told” Brian Leith

if anything, abdicating all responsibility for conservation and is offering very little that integrates ‘man and nature’ – where we should be!” One of the Festival’s core themes this year is conservation, and how well-considered wildlife television and film can play its part. Wednesday morning’s ‘Poaching and the media’ session (p34) looks at the relationship between filmmakers and those on the frontline of conservation, while the ‘Greatest Story Never Told’ afternoon debate (p35) attempts to answer the question of how wildlife TV can engage audiences with the current state of the natural world and stir them into being the change. When posed the same question, Brian is more › philosophical. “I’m not sure 17

Industry snapshot › about ‘stirring them’. That

sounds like campaigning, which very few viewers want. But there are many terrific stories out there – science stories and conservation stories – which are simply not being told. I find it a bit depressing that we’re not telling the ‘Countryfile’-type stories that obviously draw such huge audiences.” Jörn Röver, Head of the Natural History Unit, NDR Naturfilm/Doclights GmbH, holds a similar view: “As we work mainly for public broadcasters the conservation topic is very important for us. Nevertheless we have to find ways to engage the audiences that are suitable for a prime time slot right after the main evening news. People are looking for the wonders of nature in the first place but are open to conservation messages within the films. This has a long tradition on German TV.” “Natural history is still one of the most innovative genres,” adds Jörn. “Not only by using state-of-the art cameras and specially designed technology but also in constantly finding new ways of telling animal stories in an emotional and Brian Leith

“I believe it will be vital, even more than in the past, to create big events that stand out in a multi-channel and multi-platform world” Jörn Röver more feature-like style without being unnatural. “However, the increasing production of low quality scripted reality formats pretending to show natural history stories is definitely a critical path.” So what of the future? What trends and developments, technological or otherwise, do Brian and Jörn anticipate will be key to shaping the industry in the next five years? “Weaving other genres into wildlife, such as history, engineering, science... and seeing a greater range of engaging stories, that’s what excites me most about the future of natural history filmmaking,” admits Brian. “The development of new and breathtaking technology will continue and will enable us to show our planet as our audiences have never seen it before,” say Jörn. “Our biggest opportunities in the future will be to promote our brands also for a non-linear TV world where viewers look for special content. “The broader natural history is shown, the better,” he continues “New platforms offer fresh ways of presenting content

either in a classic blue chip way or in short, innovative formats that, from my point of view still have the high quality NDR Naturfilm stands for. Furthermore I believe it will be vital, even more than in the past, to create big events that stand out in a multi-channel and multiplatform world.”

Monday 20 October

‘4K’ Ultra HD has generated a surge of interest in high resolution television, but the introduction of high resolution cameras and displays has implications for every programme maker whether they are creating content for HDTV or the Big Screen. With that in mind, this three-hour workshop provides a broad overview of technology working at higher resolutions than HD and examines how this can be used to enhance programme making, both now and in the future. Some practical workflows, from acquisition through data management and post production, will be used to illustrate the pipelines that are available today both for HD and 4K delivery.

15:00 - 18:00 Tutors: The team from Icon Films

This workshop offers a solid grounding in the skills, responsibilities, methods and best-practices involved in working as a production coordinator in specialist factual documentary. Through a series of tasks and exercises taken from real-life productions this session will be firmly rooted in the day-to-day realities of the job, and participants will gain a comprehensive grounding of the challenges, tasks and issues they are likely to face, and how to deal with them effectively.

A practical guide to assessing and managing the risks of wildlife filmmaking Arnolfini Meeting Room 15:00 - 18:00 Tutors: Ali Bradburn (warehouse 51), Liz Stevens (freelance), Matthew Torrible (Quartz Insurance Brokers)

This is an intensely practical three-hour workshop using real wildlife production examples. The team of tutors will provide a hands-on session that emphasises the risks and dilemmas faced by wildlife film and television crews around the world, as they try to find the balance between getting the shot and getting killed.

ARRI is the industry-leading provider of technology and services for motion picture, television and commercials productions. Our ALEXA digital camera system is behind Oscar-winning movies such as Hugo, Life of Pi and Gravity, and is ubiquitous on the sets of blockbuster feature films. ALEXA is also the camera of choice for countless television productions, from Doctor Who and Sherlock to Downton Abbey, Peaky Blinders and more. ALEXA’s “baby sister” AMIRA is now bringing the same cinematic image quality to documentary and wildlife filmmaking, with unprecedented flexibility and ease of use. At the Wildscreen Festival ARRI will premier AMIRA’s new UHD capability, which makes it a uniquely versatile and accommodating camera for natural history productions, whether they are destined for IMAX, UHD, HD or iPhone screens.

Describe it as a perfect storm. A mad scientist, with the passion and resources to make his dreams come true, a team of brilliant specialists that shared his passion and, finally, the moment in history when the technology would be possible. All factors were necessary for the dream to be realised. The genesis of RED stirred in 2005, with the first RED ONE camera being delivered in August of 2007. Jim Jannard, the owner and founder of sportswear and sunglass icon, Oakley, set out to realise his ultimate quest, to build the world’s best cameras. Starting out of a warehouse garage, he and a small group of pioneers changed the face of the motion picture industry. Based on the RAW file capture of digital SLRs, the RED team engineered a camera capable of recording RAW, 4K images at up to 30 frames per second. Digital cinema, on a modern scale, was born.

Panasonic are proud to be sponsors of Wildscreen Festival. Wildlife programmes often lead the way in the application of production technology – taking complicated production solutions into inhospitable landscapes is a risk all natural history programme makers have to make. Please support Wildscreen

Our mission is to share awe-inspiring images of life on Earth and empower conservation around the world.

T

here’s so much more to Wildscreen than festivals alone. Since its launch 32 years ago, Wildscreen has evolved from a biennial celebration of the best in natural history film and television into a leading wildlife conservation charity that reconnects people with the nature.

When strong storytelling and captivating imagery are united to portray the planet, we believe that people are moved to take action to protect it. That’s why, through our three initiatives, we inspire photographers and filmmakers to take the most vital images, why we use images to inspire the next

Killer Whales: Beneath the Surface

As a charitable organisation, we rely on the support of others to help us inspire the next generation of conservationists and we are extremely grateful to all our sponsors, partners and donors. Without their generous support Wildscreen’s vital work would not be possible. There are many ways in which you can help support our work – please see our donation page at:
