Operation Comfort Warrior Challenge Operation Comfort Warrior (OCW) is a National American Legion program dedicated to meeting the needs of wounded, injured or ill military personnel by providing them with comfort items not usually supplied by the government. Commander Jensen is asking all posts to support Operation Comfort Warrior by donating funds. Cross Plains Post No. 245, Waukesha Post No. 8, Mason Post No. 516 of the 12th District, Cornice Grace Post No. 455 and the
7th District are the latest to respond with generous donations totaling over $1,500. You can show your support by sending a donation to OCW in care of Department Headquarters or by visiting the Wisconsin Veterans Home at King on Father’s Day, June 16th, for the 58th Annual American Legion King Day sponsored by the 8th District. At that time we will collect all donations for presentation to National Commander Jim Koutz at the 95th Annual National Convention this August.
2013 Wisconsin American Legion Oratorical Contest Winner Reaches National Semi-finals
Astha Berry, a junior at Franklin High School was this year’s Oratorical Scholarship Contest winner. She received a $3,000 scholarship and went on to represent Wisconsin at the National Contest held April 19-21 in Indianapolis, IN. Astha was sponsored by Hales Corners American Legion Post No. 299. Each contestant delivered a prepared oration about some aspect of the U.S. Constitution, with emphasis on the duties and obligations of citizens to our government. Speeches were eight to ten minutes long. Three to five minute speeches on an assigned topic also were part of the contest. At the National event, Astha participated in the first Round and received an additional $1,500. She then advanced and participated in the second round where she received $1,500 more, making the total of the scholarship funds
she earned at the Department and National contests $6,000. Note; Last month’s edition of the Badger Legionnaire failed to identify Samuel Anderson, a senior at River Falls High School, as the 10th District representative at the Regional and Department contests held February 16th at Ripon College. Samuel was sponsored by the Fletcher-Pechacek Post No. 121 in River Falls and will receive a $600 scholarship.

“Caring for America’s Heroes For 125 Years” Commander Jensen recently visited the Veterans Memorial Stadium on the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse campus and is pictured here with a replica of the famous “Bronze Men” statue that was commissioned in honor of all Vietnam veterans. Commander Jensen served in Vietnam aboard a US Navy Swift Boat based out of Da Nang in the I Corps sector.
