PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE As I write this, it seems like fall is in the air and those warm lazy days of summer are now just a fading memory. For the AuxilDiana Sirovina iary, that’s not Department so bad! While I President know that many units continue to work on their programs during the summer, there are a fair number that are just getting back to meetings in the fall. Now is a great time to begin planning all those great projects that will benefit our veterans, active duty military and their fami-
lies. Our program chairmen have all established their “Plan of Action” for the coming year, so please visit our website for all the information you will need to be very successful in your projects this year. Remember to keep track of all your hours for our Impact Reports at the end of the year. As you make your plans, please remember our theme for the year, “Working Together… for Veterans and Our Organization.” Whatever you plan, try to include all – not only your Auxiliary members, but Post and SAL members, too. Last week I was invited to attend a unit meeting in a small community in 1st District. While
the members of the EssmanSchroeder Unit 20 may be small in number, they truly prove that “working together” does get things done. These ladies work together on their programs, share the duties and accomplish a lot! The two young ladies this Unit sponsored to Badger Girls State also attended the meeting and gave glowing accounts of their experiences. This unit like so many others all over the state proves that “service not self” unites us in our mission to advocate for veterans, educate our citizens, mentor youth, and promote patriotism. Diana Sirovina Department President
MEMBERSHIP Ann Rynes Dept Membership Chairman Ph: (608) 604-0350 Email: annies@mwt.net At this writing, the 3rd Annual Fall Ride to Camp was successful in members and numbers! The dining hall was full with family members and $9,000 was raised. The family is Working Together for Our Veterans and Our Organization! Another successful Fall Forum has ended and many fall conferences and membership rallies are underway. The 3rd and 7th District rally is in New Lisbon on October 20th. 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th Districts is being held on October 28th in Greendale. And word has it that Elvis might be making an appearance in Green Bay on November 3rd at the joint 6th, 8th and 9th District rally! Here’s hoping that all of the upcoming events will be successful. If the team is unable to be at your event, please let us know
how it goes. Membership is every member’s responsibility. Talk about it. It doesn’t have to be a bad word. Offer early dues payment incentives, offer a free membership, pay the dues of your nursing home-bound long-time members. If you’re in a rut-change it up. Instead of meetings, pack homeless women veterans bags, cut and tie blankets, pack Operation Military Kids backpacks, make table favors, pack boxes for deployed troops. Have your inactive members clip coupons and offer to pick them up. Get your members engaged! What are the strengths that you can draw from to engage your members in something that they can take ownership of? It is not relevant how many members you have. It’s what “gets them off the couch.” Send newsletters to keep the inactive members in the loop. They may just find out about a project that
interests them and want to participate. A huge fault of ours is that we don’t toot our own horn and let others know the good we are doing. The prime example is in the reports, or lack thereof, that are turned in to District and Department. National President Peggy Thomas’ theme is “Soaring to New Heights with Angels in Service.” By demonstrating service not self and engaging members in meaningful mission delivery, the American Legion Auxiliary will retain current members and attract new members. The first national membership milestone date is Veterans Day. The goal is to be at 55% in membership. Where will you be? Your membership team: Ann Rynes, 608-604-0350, annies@mwt.net; Berne Baer, 920-680-0308, twobaers2009@gmail.com; April Kollmorgen, 360-362-2803, aekollmorgen@comcast.net.
NATIONAL SECURITY Karen Degner Department Chairman C: (920) 918-9772 H: (920) 892-6139 Email: mdegner@wi.rr.com Do you or someone you know have unused points for hotel stays? Do you know you can provide “Hotels for Heroes”? Helping is simple. Donate your unused points to participating hotels and help our wounded warriors and their families. Fisher House Foundation ensures that there is no fee to stay in a Fisher House. Since inception, the program has saved
military and veteran families an estimated $192 million in out of pocket costs for lodging and transportation. Fisher House Foundation operates the Hero Miles Program, using donated frequent flyer miles to bring family members to the bedside of injured service members as well as the Hotels for Heroes program using donated hotel points to allow family members to stay at hotels near medical centers without charge. Fisher House Foundation has partnered with the following major hotel groups: AmericInn,
Best Western, Choice Hotels, Marriott Rewards, Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc., and Wyndham. * Please note that our agreements with individual hotel groups only permit free rooms for wounded, injured, or ill military (or DoD civilian employees) and their families. These rooms will not be used for R&R travel or other travel not related to a medical condition. For more information: http://fisherhouse.org/programs/hotels-for-heroes/abouthotels-for-heroes/

ALA National President Peggy Thomas Peggy Thomas joined the American Legion Auxiliary through her late husband, John C. Thomas, a U.S. Army veteran. She is the first national president from Virginia since Anna Gear in 1983-1984. Thomas, a 31-year member of the Auxiliary, has held numerous leadership positions in the organization at the unit, district and department levels. At the national level, she just completed her term as vice president and has served as chairman of the following committees: Veteran Affairs & Rehabilitation, Children & Youth, Leadership, National Security, Constitution & Bylaws, Poppy, Legislative, and Membership. She has served her Virginia department as president, secretary and chairman
of a variety of committees including the Advisory Committee for 10 years. Thomas served Auxiliary Unit 144 as president twice and as secretary, and Unit 137 as

president. She has held all chairmanships in both units. A retired vice president of a petroleum distributorship with three divisions, Thomas continues the American Legion Auxiliary motto of Service Not Self by volunteering as the Veterans Affairs Voluntary Service deputy at the Hunter Holmes McGuire VAMC in Richmond, Virginia. Thomas has one married daughter, Lisa, and is currently a member of Lutheran Church of Our Savior, National Association of Parliamentarians, and the Bellwood Defense Supply Women’s Club where she is a member of the Executive Committee. Thomas is also vice president of M. Stanley Ryan Unit of Parliamentarians.
GREETINGS FROM HEADQUARTERS Bonnie Dorniak Executive Secretary/Treasurer Ph: (608) 745-0124 Email: deptsec@amlegionauxwi.org www.amlegionauxwi.org National President Peggy Thomas’ theme for 2012-2013 is “Soaring to New Heights…for God and Country” and her membership theme is “Angels in Service.” Every Auxiliary member is an angel honoring the veteran(s) in her life through her membership and service. Be proud of your membership and soar! Veterans Day is a time to remember and honor all veterans of the armed services. If you would like to honor a special veteran in your life, consider purchasing a commemorative button from the national membership team. Each customized button contains a photo of the veteran (supplied by you). Please see the button order form on page A3 or on the department website and order one today. What a great opportunity to engage new members or share the Auxiliary’s
mission when people ask who is pictured on your button! National Headquarters mailed 2013 Membership Renewal Notices on September 15th. Anyone whose dues were not processed at Department Headquarters by August 20th should have received a notice. Many members have expressed concern about the Join By dates printed on their membership cards. If your date is off by one year, do not worry. This date reflects when your membership was processed by National Headquarters and has no connection to your Continuous Years. If your Join By date is incorrect by more than one year, please notify your Unit Membership Chairman who will submit a correction form so National can update their system before 2014 membership cards are printed next year. THANK YOU! to everyone who has already responded to our annual calendar fundraiser. Your donations support our veterans, the military and their families. Contact Department Headquarters if you need
additional entry forms. They make great birthday, Christmas, and anniversary gifts (hint-hint). There are 365 chances to win because winning entry forms are returned to the barrel every day, allowing you the chance to win more than once! The last day to enter is December 31, 2012. Daily drawings start January 1st. The IRS requires all non-profit organizations whose income is less than $50,000 to file an IRS 990N ePostcard on an annual basis at www.irs.gov. The IRS is revoking the tax-exempt status of organizations that have not filed for three consecutive years. If your Auxiliary unit is in jeopardy or has questions regarding their tax-exempt status, you must contact IRS Customer Service at 877829-5500 for assistance. Neither Department nor National Headquarters can restore a Unit’s tax-exempt status. However, Judge Advocate Onderdonk is compiling a list of Units whose tax-exempt status has been unfairly revoked, so please notify Department Headquarters if your Unit has been affected.
HOMELESS WOMEN VETERANS PROGRAM
Let me walk with my brother in perfect harmony. Let peace begin with me, let this be the moment now. With ev’ry step I take let this be my solemn vow;
To take each moment and live each moment in peace eternally. Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me. WORKING TOGETHER FOR GOD AND COUNTRY
Kathy Wollmer Department Chairman Email: k.wollmer@yahoo.com The Homeless Women Veterans Program provides assistance in the form of financial grants to homeless or at-risk of being homeless women Veterans and her family. We are thrilled that President Diana Sirovina has selected this program for her “special project” this year. The Homeless Women Veterans Program is an opportunity for the Auxiliary to continue to honor the service of women Veterans and to offer a hand-up of support as many struggle to put their lives back together. Last year more than forty women Veterans received grants from the American
Legion Auxiliary. In the last two months this program has awarded over twenty grants, mostly for rent or security deposits. Your donations have helped keep over 60 women Veterans from sleeping on the streets in Wisconsin! “I cannot thank you and the American Legion Auxiliary enough for your assistance during this time. I appreciate it so much that I cannot tell you. It will help me greatly as I am trying very hard to get more hours of work (hopefully full time) in the next 60 days. I have been scrambling trying to stay afloat for almost a year now. Honestly, this is the first time in my life that I have not felt completely alone.” The above note was received from a
Veteran who received an Auxiliary grant to pay back rent. Having been discharged over nine years ago, this Veteran has struggled to keep her life in order. She was recently diagnosed with PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) and MST (military sexual trauma) and is now receiving care at a VA Medical Center. Unfortunately, grant funds are running low and your support is needed now more than ever! Please continue to support women Veterans and this very worthy program by sending your donations to ALA Headquarters, PO Box 140, Portage, WI 53901. Use a Poppy Funds Donation form at www.amlegionauxwi.org and mark the Homeless Women Veterans Fund.

EDUCATION Kitty Larkin Department Chairman Email: kittysltrs@wi.rr.com EDUCATION is the vital force that drives people to success in all areas of their life. For young people, it is the cornerstone that supports the foundation of their future; without it their life would continue to be a struggle. We can help the children of our Warriors beginning with participation in the “Give 10 to Education” Project, which helps to provide many small items that every student needs. You can do-
nate time, snacks, money, flags, speakers, student mentoring, reading programs, scholarship funds or delivery of scholarship applications. Be innovative and give 10 of anything that will help advance a child’s education in private schools, public schools and parochial schools. Education does not end with our young children and their needs continue as they advance to the higher grades and even into college. We also need to remember the adult students that have given an important time of
their lives to protect our country and are going back into the classrooms to continue their education. See the ALA website (www.amlegionauxwi.org) for scholarship availability. American Education Week (November 11-17, 2012) presents all Americans with a wonderful opportunity to celebrate public education and honor individuals who are making a difference in ensuring that every child receives a quality education. M. Louise Wilson Loan Fund Violet Feldmann Department Chairman Ph: (920) 892-4784 Email: vifeldmann@webtv.net The American Legion Auxiliary in Wisconsin has a secret. It is called the M. Louise Wilson Educational Loan Fund. Why is it a secret? NO college bound Auxiliary members are taking advantage of this INTEREST FREE program this year. You, the Auxiliary member, are losing the opportunity because
you do not write for an application and rules. The Department offers a $400 interest-free loan to members seeking higher education. Each year a member attends college, she may borrow $400, up to a maximum loan of $2000. There is NO INTEREST charged unless the loan goes into default. Applicants must be a graduate of an accredited high school with a scholastic average that would place her in the upper half
of her class. An application must be completed and accompanied with the Veteran’s DD214 discharge papers. A certified copy of the applicant’s grade transcript and three letters of reference must also be included with the application. Please contact me at 322 N. Highland Avenue Apt 107, Plymouth, WI 53073 for an application. Please share this information with others so it’s not a secret any longer!
