“Building Champions, Building Traditions”

Volume 13, Issue 1 Each year, I am amazed by the dedication and achievement of Laurier’s athletes. Wearing their purple and gold with Dr. Max Blouw pride, our athletes are true leaders who continue to inspire the entire Laurier community. Yet after their competition is finished, and after they hang up their jerseys, our Laurier athletes continue to inspire us. They apply their leadership values to making a difference in our communities – as students and as volunteers. This year our Laurier athletes enjoyed another successful season, punctuated by an outstanding performance from the women’s curling team, who won three gold medals in three months, as well as another provincial championship from the women’s hockey team. Cheerleading also continued to shine on the national stage as they won their fifth straight national championship. As we take our first strides into Laurier’s second century, we look forward to building on 100 years of past athletic traditions and celebrating new achievements. Thank you for your ongoing passion, commitment and contributions – you have helped to form the Laurier community that we are today. continued on page nine...

Women lead charge for Hawks in 2011-12

Women’s curling made Laurier history in 2011-12 as they became the first women’s team to win consecutive national titles.

The 2011-12 athletic season was one that brought female student-athletes to the forefront of the University’s attention thanks to some significant onfield performances. From women’s curling capturing their second straight national championship to women’s soccer’s Alyssa Lagonia winning CIS Player of the Year honours, it was truly a special year for the Hawks’ female squads. While the women stood out in their respective sports, the Golden Hawks once again stood out as a whole in their success both on and off the field. 38 different Laurier student-athletes earned OUA All-Star honours while another eight were recognized as CIS All-Canadians. Hard work in the classroom also paid off as 52 athletes earned academic honours at the OUA and CIS level, with this success coming on the heels of research showing Laurier student-athletes regularly out-perform their non-athlete counterparts at Wilfrid Laurier. Here is a closer look at the headlines which played out over the course of the season. As was the case last season, the women’s curling team was the class of the Golden Hawks in 2011-12. Led by skip Laura Crocker, the Hawks started the year in Japan representing Team Canada at the Kariuzawa Internation Curling Championship. Playing against some of the best teams in the world, Laurier won a thrilling semifinal over Japan before dis-

posing of Switzerland in extra ends to win gold. In February, Laurier travelled to Guelph for the OUA Championships where they once again made it through to the gold medal game. Taking on Western, the women controlled the match from start to finish to win their third provincial title in five years. With two gold medals to their credit, the Hawks looked for the trifecta at the CIS/CCA Championship in March. After finishing first in the round robin, Laurier went right to the finals where they dominated the host Brock Badgers to become the first Laurier women’s team to win back-to-back CIS banners. Crocker, vice Sarah Wilkes, second Jenny Gates and lead Cheryl Kreviazuk all earned CIS AllCanadian honours while Maurice Wilson captured his second-straight CIS Coach of the Year Award. Coming off a disappointing 2010-11 campaign, the women’s hockey team was determined to regain their spot as one of the top programs in the country. With an incredibly deep and talented lineup, highlighted by OUA All-Stars Laura Brooker and Alicia Martin, Laurier steamrolled the competition during the regular season, losing just once, an overtime setback to the Guelph Gryphons. Their 25-0-1 record against OUA competition was good enough to help them earn the No. 1 ranking in the CIS for the first time since 2006. A new playcontinued on page 4...

A Message from Peter Baxter “Raising the Bar” each year in the pursuit of excellence can be a challenge for an Athletic & Recreation Department. Fortunately our people, including coaches, student-athletes, student leaders, and the student body, continue to reach and surpass that “bar”.

Peter Baxter

This year Laurier won OUA Championships in women’s hockey and women’s curling, with a CIS crown as well in women’s curling. Women’s soccer achieved silver at the OUA Championship while men’s hockey and both basketball teams earned play-off berths in a highlycompetitive OUA with men’s basketball going 16-6 in regular season, a team record. Two graduating soccer players, Alyssa Lagonia and Tania Pedron, became the first two Laurier women’s soccer athletes to sign professional soccer contracts in Europe, playing for Doncaster in England. Former men’s rugby captain Ken Jackson will also be playing professionally across the pond after signing on with Amersham & Chiltern Rugby Football Club. Shamawd Chambers was sixth pick in the CFL draft by the Edmonton Eskimos while former Hawk Courtney Stephen was drafted eighth.

One of the accomplishments to be most proud of this past season is the 52 studentathletes who achieved OUA and CIS academic honours. A longitudinal study conducted by sociologist Dr. Bill McTeer of Laurier and Dr. Phil White of McMaster showed that collectively Laurier athletes have a higher graduation rate (94% athletes vs. 89% non-athletes) than the general student population. Match this with 37 OUA All-Stars and eight All-Canadian honours and we truly have exceptional people who “inspire lives of leadership and purpose”. Wilfrid Laurier University continues to meet its mission of being the best Athletic & Recreation program in Canada – a fact confirmed as Laurier was awarded the CIRA Ontario’s Outstanding Intramural Recreation Achievement Award for the fifth consecutive year. A student-leader driven model, Laurier increased our intramural and club programs by 469 participants in 2011-12. What does the future hold? This July will see the renovation of our Athletic Complex locker rooms and expanded space for the “Hawk Shop”, your home for everything Golden Hawks. Thanks to a $5 million gift from the Laurier student body, August marked the start of a 10,900 square foot expansion of the Laurier Fitness Centre, effectively doubling the space. Highlights of the expanded space will include an increase of the free weight training area, $700,000 in new cardio and strength machines, two new dance/fitness studios

and a dedicated fitness assessment room. The generosity of our students is both heartwarming and inspiring. In addition, our ongoing success and continued striving to “raise the bar” depends on sustaining our honoured links to our alumni, sponsors, and friends. Through the generosity of volunteerism, philanthropy and corporate sponsorship, alumni, sponsors and friends have helped enrich the student experience at Laurier. Our student-athlete Adopt-a-Hawk program raised $180,000 which went directly to the teams donors wished to support. In a period of fiscal restraint at universities across Ontario, this type of support helps maintain Laurier’s tradition of excellence, something for which we are very extremely grateful. I very much hope we can count on your continued involvement and support in the years ahead. The 2012-12 Golden Hawk year is beginning and I look forward to seeing you in the stands, be it at the field, gym or arena, to help support the Hawks. Go Hawks! Sincerely,

Peter Baxter, MA Director, Athletics & Recreation

The expansion of the Athletic Complex Fitness Centre is expected to be completed by August 2013

2012 Golden Hawk Hall of Fame Inductees All-Star honours for the third time in his career while helping Laurier to its first Yates Cup title and second Atlantic Bowl championship.

This fall, the Golden Hawk Hall of Fame will welcome eight new members as part of the 2012 induction class. The induction ceremony is scheduled to take place on Friday, September 28 in the Senate and Board Chamber. During Homecoming weekend, five athletes, two teams and one builder will have their names etched into Golden Hawks history. This year’s athlete inductees include three former members of the football team, Mike Choma, Art Lestins and Justin Phillips, along with women’s basketball’s Sarah Zagorski and women’s hockey’s Laurissa Kenworthy. Both the 1989-90 men’s hockey and the 1968-69 men’s basketball teams will be recognized in the Teams category while John Webster will be honoured in the Builders category. Choma was an offensive lineman for the Golden Hawks from 1985 until 1989. After Laurier fell short in the Yates Cup final in his first year on the squad, Choma played an integral role in the success of the 1987 squad. Mike Choma As an Ontario University Athletics Association (OUAA) First Team All-Star and Laurier’s Lineman of the Year, Choma helped lead the Hawks to a 6-1 record in the regular season before they captured their third Yates Cup in seven years. He would go on to earn OUAA First Team All-Star honours in his final two seasons at Laurier and following his university playing career, was drafted 23rd overall by the B.C. Lions. Lestins, who like Choma was an offensive lineman, suited up for the Hawks from 1969 to 1972. In just his second season on the team, he was named a Central Canada Intercollegiate Football Art Lestins Conference (CCIFC) All-Star and then in 1971, he was honoured as OUAA All-Star along with earning Team Most Valuable Player (MVP) honours. However, it was Lestins’ final season as a Hawk where he had his most success as he earned

Phillips is the third football-playing member of the 2012 class. Currently a member of the Calgary Stampeders, he played three seasons for Laurier as a defensive Justin Phillips lineman, linebacker and free safety, winning the Yates Cup in 2004 and 2005 as well as capturing the Vanier Cup in 2005. In his rookie year in 2004, Phillips put up the best numbers of his career, recording 20 total tackles and five sacks en route to being named an OUA Second Team All-Star. In his final season in 2006, the Kitchener, Ont., native finished sixth in the country in sacks with 5.5 while recording 16.5 tackles en route to being named a CIS Second Team All-Canadian and an OUA First Team All-Star. Zagorski becomes the second women’s basketball player in as many years to enter the Hall of Fame after former teammate Meaghan McGrath was inducted in 2011. A guard for the Hawks Sarah Zagorski from 2001-02 until 200405, she made an immediate impact with the Hawks in her first season, averaging 11.1 points, 4.4 assists and 3.2 rebounds. Following the season, she would be named the OUA West Rookie of the Year and an OUA First Team All-Star as well as team Rookie of the Year and MVP. She continue her stellar play throughout the rest of her career, earning First Team AllStar status in 2002-03 and 2003-04 and currently ranks eighth all-time for points and second all-time for assists at Laurier. Zagorski also excelled in the classroom, earning the Luke Fusco Academic Athletic Achievement Award in 2003-04 and CIS Academic All-Canadian honours in 2004-05. Kenworthy is the final athlete to be inducted into this year’s class. A forward with the women’s hockey team from 2003-04 to 2006-07, she won four OUA Championships in four years Laurissa and was a member of Kenworthy Laurier’s first CIS Championship team in 2004-05. A consistent offensive player, Kenworthy earned OUA Second Team All-Star honours in her rookie season after recording 19 points in 22 games. Over her next three seasons, she would be named an OUA

First Team All-Star with her best statistical season coming in 2005-06 when she registered 24 points in 24 games. However, it was in the post-season where Kenworthy really stood out for the Hawks. A three-time CIS Championship Tournament All-Star, Kenworthy scored 26 points in 21 career playoff games, a pace of 1.2 points per game compared to her regular season average of 0.9 points per game. Today, Kenworthy, a two-time CIS Academic All-Canadian, still ranks in the top ten for points (88 – eighth) and goals (44 – fifth) all-time at Laurier. The 1989-90 men’s hockey team is the first of two teams to be inducted this year. Widely considered to be one of the best men’s hockey teams ever assembled at Laurier, the Hawks boasted a formidable lineup that possessed five OUA All-Stars and two CIS AllCanadians. Among that group were current head coach and 1989-90 Men’s Hockey Golden Hawks’ all-time leading scorer Greg Puhalski, Mike Maurice, Marc Lyons, Peter Choma and Rob Dopson. After posting a 19-3-0 record in the regular season, the Hawks easily defeated Guelph and Waterloo to reach the OUA Finals where they battled UQTR. Laurier would once again win the series in a sweep to claim their second straight OUA Championship. However, at the national championship, they came up short for a CIAU title, losing 2-1 to the Moncton Aigles Bleus in the final. The 1968-69 men’s basketball team, this year’s second team to be inducted, has a very similar story to the 1989-90 men’s hockey squad. A young squad that featured eight freshman and four seniors, the Hawks 1968-69 Men’s overcame Basketball a slow start to their season and qualified for the Ontario Intercollegiate Athletic Association (OIAA) final. In the championship game, Laurier, led by the school’s first-ever All-Canadian Sandy Nixon, as well as Chris Coulthard, Bob Bain and Mike Kirkpatrick, trailed by four points in the final minute to Osgoode but rallied to win the school’s sixth consecutive OIAA banner 60-56. continued on page 8...

Two Golden Hawks Teams Earn No. 1 Ranking in 2011-12 continued from cover page...

With high expectations this past year for the men’s basketball program thanks to a bumper crop of fifth year veterans, the Hawks did not disappoint coming out of the gate. Laurier won seven straight games to start the year and found themselves in the Top 5 of the national rankings. Led by OUA AllStars Kale Harrison and Maxwell Allin, Laurier continued their strong play into February, winning their team-record 16th game against Guelph early in the month. However, from that point on, the Hawks would not taste victory for the remainder of the season, eventually bowing out to the Guelph Gryphons in the opening round of the OUA playoffs. On the diamond, men’s baseball had a strong season which started off with a tournament victory at the Brock Labour Day Classic. From there, the up-andcoming program would rack up a teamrecord for victories in a season as they finished fourth in the OUA. Hosting the OUA Baseball Championship in October, Laurier stunned the top-seeded Brock Badgers in the opening round of the playoffs but fell just short of reaching the final, losing to the eventual champions from Toronto. Jonathan Brouse was honoured with OUA Rookie of the Year and All-Star honours and was joined on the All-Star team by Ryan Panas and Darnell Duckett. Men’s football had another up and down season and finished with an identical record, 4-4, as they did in 2010. The Hawks, after an opening game victory, lost their next three games but Homecoming provided a much needed spark. Laurier walked all over the Ottawa Gee-Gees on the 100th celebration of Laurier and used the momentum from that game to win three of their next Women’s soccer midfielder Alyssa Lagonia became just the second player in team history to win the CIS Player four. Laurier would go on to finish fourth at the CIS Championship for the second straight season. On December 3 2011, the Golden Hawks Cheerleading team earned their fifth straight Canadian national title. The team faced a strong challenge from the Guelph Gryphons but came from behind to achieve a feat unrivaled by any other All-Girl team in the country. The team was comprised of 38 strong and talented athletes who wore the purple and gold with great poise and enthusiasm. Headed by three fourth year veterans, 21 returning members, and 16 rookies, the team was well situated to continue the strong tradition of spirit and athleticism that have become synonymous with the program. Laurier women’s soccer carried over their excellent play from the previous year as they won a team-record 10 straight games to open the season, helping them earn the No. 1 ranking in the country. The veteran team, which included three CIS All-Canadians (Kelsey Tikka, Alyssa Lagonia and Tania Pedron)

The opening round of the playoffs saw Laurier overcome a large half-time deficit to shock the Guelph Gryphons 75-73 in overtime before bowing out in the OUA Quarter-finals at the hands of the Brock Badgers on the road. The 2011-12 men’s hockey campaign was one that was fraught with injuries as the Hawks were forced to use an astonishing 30 players over the course of the season. Although OUA All-Star goaltender Ryan Daniels consistently faced more than 40 shots a game behind a young team, Laurier still managed to pull off enough victories to extend their playoff streak to 10 seasons. Facing Western in the opening round, the Hawks battled the CIS silver medalists to the very end, coming up just short in their bid to pull off an upset of the nationally-ranked Mustangs. Laurier women’s lacrosse, winners of seven of the past eight OUA titles, found themselves competing against a much higher level of competition across the league in 2011. The Hawks finished the regular season in third place with an 8-4 record thanks to the solid play of OUA All-Stars Ashley Rutz and Emma Pink. However, their bid for back-to-back

Dillon Heap, who set a new OUA record for punt return yards in a career, was honoured with the CIS Russ Jackson award in 2011.

OUA banners was halted in the OUA Quarter-finals when they lost 9-8 to the Toronto Varsity Blues. Laurier would go on to finish fifth in the province after a thrilling 7-6 triple overtime win over McMaster in the consolation final. On the pitch, the Golden Hawks’ men’s soccer team had an up-and-down year with more than half of their roster competing in their first year of OUA play. Highlights during the year included a season-opening draw against the defending national champions, the York Lions, as well as a 3-0 victory over the Brock Badgers. However, the Hawks 4-8-4 record was not good enough to

secure them a playoff berth. Following the season, Donald Chmura and Trevor Schein were named OUA Second Team All-Stars. With a new coach on board in Russ Franklin, the swim teams had a solid year in the pool for Laurier. At the OUA Championships, three swimmers punched their ticket to nationals including Renee Dijk, Veronica Davis-Freeman and Lukas Summerhayes. As a team, the men improved three positions at provincials as they grabbed seventh overall while the women finished ninth. At nationals, Dijk was the Hawks top finisher as she was 18th in the 100m Backstroke while Summerhayes, the first male to compete at the CIS Championships for Laurier in three years, was 21st in the 200m Individual Medley. Men’s golf continued to show that they are one of the top programs in Ontario as they earned a fifth place finish at the OUA Championship in October. Jordan Oudyk shone for Laurier at the provincial championships as he finished fifth overall and was named an OUA First Team All-Star. Brett Murray also showed well, finishing 10th and earning OUA Second Team All-Star honours. At the Canadian University/College Championship in June, the Hawks

er young Laurier team, opened the OUA Championship with two convincing victories before losing their next three games to miss out on the chance to play for a medal. Fraser Reid, Joel Waters and Aaron Squires were named OUA AllStars following the championships. Outstanding Women of Laurier Award

Laura Crocker was named the 2012 Outstanding Woman of Laurier. Crocker, the skip for Laurier’s varsity women’s curling team, received the award during a luncheon at the Waterloo Inn Conference Hotel in March. “Laura is an outstanding athlete who also shines as a student and a volunteer,” said Peter Baxter, Laurier’s director of athletics and recreation. “This event gives Laurier the opportunity to showcase our exceptional female student-athletes and how they inspire lives of leadership and purpose.” Crocker is a fourth-year Psychology major from Scarborough, Ontario and a two-time Academic All-Canadian.

“I want to thank Laurier for giving me the opportunity to excel as an athlete, as a student and as a community volunteer,” Crocker told the crowd after accepting her award. “As female athletes, we do face challenges, but we do have very big dreams. We all want to be at the Olympics one day, but we know we will never get there without a room full of people like you supporting women’s athletics.”

Crocker also volunteers her time as a Little Rock instructor and assists in the elementary school program Rocks and Rings. Outside of sport, she is actively involved in a developmental education classroom where she works with seven students with developmental delays.

Outstanding Woman of Laurier winner Laura Crocker with keynote speaker and two time Olympic Gold Medalist Cassie Campbell-Pascall

Crocker accepted her award in front of more than 300 people attending the awards luncheon. Eleven women competed for the prestigious award this year, including two who joined Crocker as finalists: Hanna Burnett and Caitlin Muirhead. Crocker won back-to-back OUA Championships this past year. She won the 2011 CIS Championship, followed by a 2012 CIS Championship win on March 18. Crocker represented Laurier and Team Canada at the Kariuzawa International Curling Championships in Japan, where she captured a gold medal.

Laurier launched the Outstanding Women of Laurier award in 2006 to recognize female students who combine athletic and academic achievement with an active commitment to the community through volunteerism. The event included an inspirational keynote address by two-time Olympic gold medalist and CBCs Hockey Night in Canada commentator Cassie CampbellPascall. Campbell-Pascall was also the first female hockey player to be inducted into the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame. The event was hosted by Laurier alumna Daiene Vernile, anchor and producer for CTV Southwestern Ontarios Provincewide. This year’s event raised $20,000 to help support women’s athletic initiatives, scholarships and the mentoring program at Laurier.

Webster, who enters the Hall of Fame as a builder, began his involvement with the Athletic Department when he arrived at the University as a student in 1975. For four years, Webster served as team manager for football team and witnessed the Hawks win the Yates Cup in 1978. After his time at Laurier, Webster attended McGill University to study law, but his loyalty and interest in Athletics at Laurier John Webster only grew. One of school’s most active alumni, he was a lead donor in many of Wilfrid Laurier’s recent facility improvements, including the renovations to University Stadium as well as the completion of Alumni Field. Webster has also been actively involved with the Friends of Golden Hawk Football Reception and Dinner, contributing as a major financial sponsor for the past ten years.
