D r . R o s e h a r t , P r e sid e n t Welcome to what promises to be an exciting Golden Hawk season! This year’s Hawks promise to be action-packed for both our studentathletes and their loyal supporters. We proudly continue the tradition of good competition in an environment that encourages the intellectual and personal development of our student athletes. The 2004 season will see several new players dawn their Golden Hawk uniforms and we have had another outstanding year in recruiting student athletes. Back for another great season is the Hawk coaching staff led by Manager of Football Operations and Head Coach, Gary Jeffries, our most passionate Hawk! The WLU Golden Hawk alumni continued to work hard in the off-season through
the Golden Hawk and 5th Quarter Clubs to secure financial support from alumni and other parties to assist our teams and coaches in their strive for excellence. This year will see the second season of the very successful weekly Hawk radio show - a first in Canada! Cheer on the “2004 Hawks” and if you have suggestions or comments on improving our Golden Hawk programs, I would like to hear from you.

P e t e r B a x t e r , D i r e c t o r o f A t h l e t ics On behalf of Laurier Athletics and Recreation, welcome to the 2004 season of Golden Hawk Football. Our Manager of Football Operations and Head Coach , Gary Jeffries, (OUA and CIS Coach of the Year 2003) and his coaching staff have put in the preparation and work ethic to ensure the team is ready to go back to the Yates Cup and beyond in 2004. The cooperative efforts of our entire department team, Golden Hawk Alumni, Student Body, and University Administration has set the stage to enhance our student-athlete experience. This year we look forward to the start of a 2.1 million dollar athletic complex fitness and weight room facility expansion which will triple our capacity. This is thanks to the joint partnership with our Student Governments and University Administration. The project will enhance our ability to attract the best qualified student-athletes who excel both academically and athletically.
Be sure to bring your radio to home games and to listen to away games on 570 News broadcast as Mike Hogan and Peter Martin will call all the Golden Hawk football games this year. Thank you for following the Hawks! Go Hawks!

O U A 2 0 0 4 O P P ONENT S Sept. 6 - Toronto at Laurier - 7:00 pm
Opponent: Toronto Varsity Blues Head Coach: Steve Howlett 2003 Record: 0-8 (10th in the OUA) All-Time vs. Laurier: 13-23 Current streak: Laurier 7 wins Outlook for 2004: In their season start against the Toronto Varsity Blues, the Golden Hawks should find a good warm up. For the past two years, the University of Toronto team has managed only to maintain an 0-8 record, and while they are determined to better that showing in 2004, the Hawks are poised to open the season with a win. Now in his second year, Blues head coach Steve Howlett has brought in 40 new recruits, and the optimism surrounding this, Howlett’s first recruiting class, is high.
Sept. 11 - Windsor at Laurier - 2:00 pm
Opponent: Windsor Lancers Head Coach: Mike Morencie 2003 Record: 4-4 (5th in the OUA) All-Time vs. Laurier: 11-28-2 Current streak: Laurier 1 win Outlook for 2004: The Windsor Lancers were defeated by the Golden Hawks in the closing eight seconds of their 2003 meeting. Ending their season at 4-4, the Lancers carved their place in the middle of the OUA field; this year they intend to improve their performance. The Lancers are returning 18 starters including the deadly duo of QB Jon Dent and WR Arjei Franklin. RB Daryl Stephenson will also make an immediate impact in his first year to complement the attack of the Blue & Gold. Big things are also expected from a veteran-laden defence including 6’3” 205lbs safety and 2003 second team OUA All-Star DB Sasha Glavic.
Oct. 2 - Laurier at Waterloo - 7:00 pm
Opponent: Waterloo Warriors Head Coach: Chris Triantafilou 2003 Record: 2-6 (8th in the OUA) All-Time vs. Laurier: 14-31-1 Current streak: Laurier 1 win Outlook for 2004: The Waterloo Warriors had a disappointed 2-6 season in 2003, and they fell to the Golden Hawks by a stunning 50-14 margin. However, it was a young, freshmen-laden team that took to the field in 2003, and which battled hard all year through injuries to several key players to finish the season with a first round playoff loss. The 2004 edition of the Warriors looks to build on a solid group of freshmen performers from last year sprinkled with the return of a number of defensive players like John Sullivan, who returns from the CFL.
Oct. 4 - Laurier at Guelph - 2:00 pm
Opponent: Guelph Gryphons Head Coach: Tom Arnott 2003 Record: 2-6 (9th in the OUA) All-Time vs. Laurier: 11-32 Current streak: Laurier 1 win Outlook for 2004: The Gryphon’s ultimate goal for 2004 is to build a consistent season. Finishing for the second straight year at 2-6 in 2003, the Guelph Gryphons will hope to pull their team’s record up in 2004. Heading the effort to improve will be Quarterback Kevin Adam, now entering his second year as quarterback, and he will be backed by the likes of Adam Zuccato -- one of the team’s fastest runners and a significant outside threat -- and veteran Trevor Small, who led the team last year in interceptions.
Oct. 9 - Ottawa at Laurier - 2:00 pm
Sept. 18 - Laurier at Western - 2:00 pm
Opponent: Western Mustangs Head Coach: Larry Haylor 2003 Record: 5-3 (4th in the OUA) All-Time vs. Laurier: 34-18 Current streak: Western 3 wins Outlook for 2004: In 2003’s Homecoming matchup, the Western Mustangs defeated the Golden Hawks in overtime. The Londonbased team went on to a season record of 5-3, and was knocked out of the Yates Cup run by the Windsor Lancers. Now entering its third and final season, the Mustang partnership of record setting QB Chris Hessel and receiving sensation Andy Fantuz is ready to run wild in 2004. Hessel has already set Western records in all of the primary passing categories and Fantuz is on track to become the country’s all-time interuniversity leader in receiving yards by the end of the season.
Sept. 25 - McMaster at Waterloo - 2:00 pm
Opponent: McMaster Marauders Coach: Marcello Campanaro 2003 Record: 8-0 (1st in the OUA) All-Time vs. Laurier: 10-34-1 Current streak: McMaster 4 wins Outlook for 2004: Reigning Yates Cup champions, the McMaster Marauders only met the Golden Hawks once in 2003 - and that was at the provincial championship game. This year the Marauders and Hawks will meet before the playoffs, with the Hamilton team benefiting from the presence of their star fourth year, CIS All-Canadian running back, Jesse Lumsden. Lumsden set an OUA record for most yards rushing in a season last year with 1,497 yards, and tied an OUA record for most touchdowns in a season with 20. The Marauders are a clear threat to repeat their championship in 2004.
15
Opponent: Ottawa Gee Gees Head Coach: Denis Piché 2003 Record: 3-4-0-1 (6th in the OUA) All-Time vs. Laurier: 10-35-1 Current streak: Laurier 1 win Outlook for 2004: Last season the Hawks began with a 30-20 victory over the Ottawa Gee-Gees, and that traditional power-house team ultimately fell to a somewhat uncharacteristic 3-5-0-1 on the year. The Gee-Gees are confident that the 2004 season will be a more successful. If last season had seen them scoring just 11 more total points in 3 close losses their record would have been 6-2. This year they are returning 65 out of 70 players, and they were also able to bring in another 45 top high school, CEGEP and Junior players, and key CIS transfers to bolster their ranks.
Oct. 18 - Laurier at York - 2:00 pm
Opponent: York Lions Head Coach: Tom Gretes 2003 Record: 3-5 (7th in the OUA) All-Time vs. Laurier: 5-27 Current streak: Laurier 1 win Outlook for 2004: In 2003, the York Lions finished with a 3-5 record, and fell by a disastrous margin of 39-8 to the Hawks. This year York returns 17 players with starting experience, nine on offense and eight on defense, from last year’s team. The Lions will build their offense around a solid offensive line, a returning starter at quarterback in second-year pivot Bart Zemanek, a 1,000-yard rusher in sophomore Andre Durie and the return of receiver Ian De Coteau (37 catches for 686 yards and seven touchdowns in 2002). Defensively, York returns four of its top five tacklers from last year.
