D r . R o s e h a r t , P r e sid e n t Welcome to what promises to be yet another exciting Golden Hawk season! This year’s Hawks promise to be action-packed for both our studentathletes and their loyal supporters. We proudly continue the tradition of good competition in an environment that encourages the intellectual and personal development of our student athletes. The 2005 season will see several new players dawn their Golden Hawk uniforms and we have had another outstanding year in recruiting student athletes. Back for another great season is the Hawk coaching staff led by Manager of Football Operations and Head Coach, Gary Jeffries, our most passionate Hawk! The WLU Golden Hawk alumni continued to work hard in the off-season
through the Golden Hawk and 5th Quarter Clubs to secure financial support from alumni and other parties to assist our teams and coaches in their strive for excellence. This year will see the third season of the very successful weekly Hawk radio show - a first in Canada! Cheer on the “2005 Hawks” and if you have suggestions or comments on improving our Golden Hawk programs, I would like to hear from you.

P e t e r B a x t e r , D i r e c t o r o f A t h l e t ics On behalf of Laurier Athletics and Recreation, welcome to the 2005 season and the home of the OUA defending Yates Cup Champions. Leadership, preparation and work ethic were the keys to success last year and Manager of Football Operations and Head Coach, Gary Jeffries (OUA Coach of the Year 2004) has motivated his staff and studentathletes to do more of the same to stay on top in Ontario and compete for the Vanier Cup. This September we officially opened our new 3.1 million dollar Athletic Complex Fitness Centre which has tripled our capacity and has enhanced our student-athlete training facilities. This is thanks to a joint partnership with our Student Governments and University Administration. The project will enhance our ability to attract the best qualified student-athletes who excel both academically and athletically.
Be sure to bring your radio to home games and to listen to away games on 570 News broadcast as Mike Hogan and Kevin McDonald will call all the Golden Hawk football games this year. Thank you for following the Hawks! Go Hawks Go!

G AR Y J EFFR I E S Gary Jeffries enters his 28th season as part of the Golden Hawk football coaching staff. It was not until 1970 that Gary would find his home at Wilfrid Laurier University. He played football for 2 years from 1970-1971 and was named an All-Star Defensive HalfBack and Rookie of the Year. After his career at Laurier he was drafted by the Toronto Argonauts in 1972 and in 1973 he signed with the Hamilton TigerCats but did not report. Coach Jeffries also played four years in the Detroit Tiger organization prior to beginning his career at WLU. In 1973 he was hired at WLU as an assistant football coach and recreation director. From 1984-1988 Jeffries was also the women’s basketball coach at WLU. In 1989 he took a break from football and coached the men’s basketball team until 1996. In 1994
Manager of Football Operations & Head Coach Rick Zmich convinced Jeffries to return to the game which he loves so much. Gary has coached 27 football seasons at WLU, with 17 as Defensive Coordinator. He was named the interim head coach midway through the ’02 season and was named the full time head coach in 2003. He has coached in 17 Yates Cups including last year’s championship victory. Since taking over at the helm of the Hawks, the team has gone 18-3-1 including two Yates Cup appearances. Coach Jeffries has coached over 700 games in total for WLU (both football and basketball), and his passion for WLU sport remains undying. Gary resides in Southampton in the offseason with his girlfriend Jill. He has four children, Jonathan, Jodie, Jaime, and Ryan, and five beautiful grandchildren.

O U A 2 0 0 5 O P P ONENT S Sept. 5 - Laurier at Queen’s - 2:00 pm
Opponent: Queen’s Golden Gaels Head Coach: Pat Sheahan 2004 Record: 2-6 (9th in the OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs. Queen’s: 3-4 Current streak: Laurier 2 wins Outlook for 2005: The Golden Hawks travel to Kingston to meet the Queen’s Golden Gaels for their 2005 season opener. It has been two years since these teams last encountered each other; in 2003, they were neckand-neck as the Golden Gaels defeated the Hawks in regular season play 26-23 while the Hawks were victorious in a thrilling semi-final overtime game, defeating the Golden Gaels 36-33 to send them to the Yates Cup Championship. While the Hawks had another successful season in 2004, the Golden Gaels did not prove to be as fortunate. finishing 9th in the OUA. Queen’s has recruited athletes nationwide this year in hopes of developing their football program.
Sept. 10 - Windsor at Laurier - 7:00 pm
Opponent: Windsor Lancers Head Coach: Mike Morencie 2004 Record: 3-5 (7th in the OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs. Windsor: 30-10-2 Current streak: Laurier 2 wins Outlook for 2005: The Hawks started off slow in their meeting against the Lancers last season, trailing by a score of 15-0 at the half. Refusing to give up, Laurier managed to stay in the game with the help of their strong defense and their offense picked up its game in the second half to finish off the Lancers, 40-21. Coming into this season the team from Windsor has high expectations. They have landed some top recruits including Lancers head coach’s son, Matt Morencie, one of the most highly recruited offensive lineman in the country. The team also returns this year with impact offensive players including inside receiver Arjei Franklin and running back Daryl Stephenson. Arjei Franklin was selected as first team All-Canadian leading the CIS in touchdown receptions and fourth in total yards receiving in 2004.
Sept. 17 - Laurier at Ottawa - 2:00 pm
Opponent: Ottawa Gee Gee’s Head Coach: Denis Piché 2004 Record: 5-3 (4th in the OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs. Ottawa: 8-7-1 Current streak: Laurier 3 wins Outlook for 2005: Last season the Hawks defeated the Gee-Gee’s in regular season action and in a convincing 46-7 semi-final win, which allowed them to advance to the Yates Cup Championship. The competition between the two teams this year should be intense as both the Hawks and Gee-Gee’s return with many veterans, including their second year quarterback Joshua Sacobie. In his rookie year, Sacobie passed for 1665 yards on 218 attempts. He will surely be a critical component to Ottawa’s offense again this year. Ottawa will be a team to watch for this season as their young team grows and gathers experience, making veterans of their lineup.
Sept. 24 - McMaster at Laurier - 2:00 pm
Opponent: McMaster Marauders Coach: Marcello Campanaro 2004 Record: 7-1 (2nd in the OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs. McMaster: 35-12-1 Current streak: Laurier 2 wins Outlook for 2005: After losing to McMaster for four straight years, the Hawks triumped last season defeating them at Homecoming as well as in the OUA Championship to take home the Yates Cup. In defeating the Marauders at Homecoming, the Hawks ruined what would have been a 40 game winning streak for McMaster, and the Laurier Yates Cup victory ended the Marauders’ streak of three straight championships. Though losing some key playersfor 2005, the Marauders will still be an elite team in the OUA. This year the Marauders must play without their star running back Jesse Lumsden, who carried for 1816 yards last season scoring 21 touchdowns, as well as other Marauders leaving to pursue CFL careers. Adam Archibald should make a large impact for the Marauders this year replacing Jon Behie as their new full time quarterback. McMaster continues to pose as a threat as they are expected to have another great recuitment class.

Oct. 1 - Waterloo at Laurier (Homecoming) - 2:00 pm
Opponent: Waterloo Warriors Head Coach: Chris Triantafilou 2004 Record: 2-6 (8th in the OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs. Waterloo: 32-14-1 Current streak: Laurier 2 wins Outlook for 2005: The Battle of Waterloo should make for an entertaining Homecoming as the two crosstown rivals compete for the bragging rights of the city. The Warriors had a disappointing season in 2004 carrying a record of 2-6. The Hawks defeated them convincingly last season in a 44-3 win, giving the Warriors very few yards up the field. This year Waterloo hopes to build on their relatively young team. Having retained many players, they are looking to advance their football program so that they may be stronger in seasons to come.
Oct. 8 - Laurier at Western - 2:00 pm
Opponent: Western Mustangs Head Coach: Larry Haylor 2004 Record: 6-2 (3rd in the OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs. Western 17-35-0-1 Current streak: Laurier 1 win Outlook for 2005: Last year the Golden Hawks defeated the Mustangs for the first time in 10 years in a close game with a score of 38-34. Laurier came up with a game winning touchdown with only seconds left in the game. Coming in third in the OUA last season with a record of 6-2, the Mustangs are determined to retake lost glory in 2005. Western will be one of Laurier’s biggest competitors this season with their offence being one of the top in the leauge. Leading the way for the Mustangs is fourth year wide receiver Andy Fantuz. Fantuz was selected as a first team AllCanadian for the 2004 season, having broken the all time receiving yards in only his third year. Western loses quarterback Chris Hessel this year, but there are high expectations surrounding incoming quarterback Mike Faulds. Faulds is a transfer this year to Western from the University of Toledo, where he had been playing on a scholarship.
Oct. 15 - York at Laurier - 2:00 pm Opponent: York Lions
Head Coach: Tom Gretes 2004 Record: 3-5 (6th in the OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs. York: 28-5 Current streak: Laurier 1 win Outlook for 2005: Last season’s matchup against the York Lions was one of the most exciting, seeing the Hawks come out on top by a score of 3819 to earn their first ever undefeated regular season, with a record of 8-0. York struggled last year, finishing the season with a record of 3-5. This year they are optimistic as their roster consists of many veterans, including their star running back Andre Durie. Rushing for a total of 1367 yards last season, Durie was selected as a 2004 second team All-Canadian. He will prove to be a threat again this year as his shifty running style has been difficult for teams across the OUA to defend against.
Oct. 22 - Laurier at Guelph - 2:00 pm
Opponent: Guelph Gryphons Head Coach: Tom Arnott 2004 Record: 4-4 (5th in the OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs. Guelph 32-12 Current streak: Laurier 2 wins Outlook for 2005: Last season Guelph improved their overall record from the previous year’s 2-6 to a better appreciated 4-4, and this year they are looking to improve further still. In last year’s meeting against the Gyphons, Laurier domniated Guelph on their home field and won by a score of 53-13. This year the Gyphons will need to pick up their game, especially on the defensive side, as last season quarterback Ryan Pyear threw for 234 yards against them while running back Nick Cameron rushed for 155 yards. Guelph is expected to have a competitive squad this year now that their many 2004 recruits have their first year under their belt. With their relatively young team, the Gyphons hope to yet again improve their ranking in the OUA for the 2005 season.
