MEDIA INFORMATION Interview Policy During the season, all interviews should be made through Manager of Football Operations and Head Coach Gary Jeffries or Manager, Communications & Business Operations Ari Grossman. Following games, all players and coaches will be available for comment on the field.

Sports Information Assistance The Golden Hawk Sports Information Office is at your service to assist you with your coverage of Laurier Football. Coordinator, Communications & Technology Mike Whitehouse will be happy to serve you during the season. For information regarding credentials, team and player information, interviews, statistics, pictures, and press releases, please call Mike (519-884-0710 ext. 2855).

Stadium Directions To reach Laurier from Highway 401, take exit 278B (coming from London) or 278 (coming from Toronto) and follow Highway 8 West to Highway 86 North - Waterloo and continue to University Avenue; follow University Avenue West past campus to Albert Street. Turn left on Albert, then right on Seagram Drive. The Stadium is on the left hand side.

Sports Information Office The Wilfrid Laurier University Sports Information Offices are in Rooms 242 and 243 in the Athletic Complex. These rooms are to the right when entering the building’s main entrance.

Game Day Information One hour before the beginning of each game, media guides and game notes packages (game preview, lineups, current statistics, and depth charts) will be available in the stadium’s press box. Official statistics will be available approximately 45 minutes after the game, as well as on the OUA website (http://www.oua.ca) within two hours of completion of the game. Game stats are distributed in the press box thoughout the game, though they are unofficial.

Media Credentials All requests for press or photo credentials should be directed to Ari Grossman, Manager, Communications & Business Operations at least one day prior to the game via phone or email. Due to press box space constraints, visiting media are asked to request as soon as possible.

OUTLOOK September 7th – Laurier at Toronto, 7:00pm Head Coach: Greg DeLaval 2008 Record: 2-6 (8th in the OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs. Toronto: 27-12 Current Streak: Laurier 10 wins, did not compete last season Outlook for 2009: The Toronto Varsity Blues finally broke their national record 49-game losing streak with two wins thanks to a large veteran presence in 2008, but their quarterback, top two rushers and receivers all graduated along with most of their offensive line. For the coming year the defence will be expected to tow the line for the first few games as the offence works their new weapons in at the skill positions. Scott Smith, who was a linebacker selected for the East-West Bowl, as well as Matt Morris and second year defensive lineman Lincoln Bryan will be important pieces in improving on a seventh ranked defence with the OUA last year. Quote from Head Coach: “We’ve got a lot of good players doing a lot of good things out here,” said DeLaval. “The intensity level amongst the players is high, which is great because we have a lot to work on as we prepare for the upcoming season. We lost some key players on offence and a lot of veteran leadership but I’m confident that our recruits and younger players can respond to the challenges they’ll face.”

October 3 – Ottawa vs. Laurier (Homecoming), 1:00pm Head Coach: Denis Piché 2008 Record: 4-4 (5th in the OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs. Ottawa: 10-10-1 Current Streak: Laurier 1 win Outlook for 2009: This season will be one of transition after an up and down year on the field. Ottawa suffered an injury plagued year leading to a .500 record before going on a spoiler run on the road in the playoffs. Led by all-time leading passer in OUA history Josh Sacobie, the Gee Gees beat Guelph and then handily defeated previously unbeaten Queen’s by ten points. Ottawa couldn’t keep the drive going as they lost at Western in the Yates Cup final. Not only will the passer be new, but Brad Sinopoli will have an almost entirely different receiving corps save for the returning Cyril Adjeity. The Gees Gee’s have the skills to be a very talented offence; depending on how quickly the team can gel in the upcoming season. Quote from Head Coach: “We will see how well our development program has prepared some of these young men…it is exciting. There will be new guys in different roles … It is our job to get these guys going.” October 10 – Windsor vs. Laurier, 1:00pm Head Coach: Mike Morencie 2008 Record: 3-5 (7th in the OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs. Windsor: 33-11-2 Current Streak: Laurier 2 wins Outlook for 2009: Last year was a true freshman season for quarterback Sam Malian who now carries the offensive load after record-setting running back Daryl Stephenson graduated. Malian connected for ten touchdowns compared to only five interceptions in a season that saw Windsor go 3-5 and just miss the playoffs with a loss in the final game of the year to McMaster. The defence will return ten starters as it looks to improve from being ranked 8th in the OUA. That side of the ball will be led by linebacker Chris Arquette who had a spot in the East-West Bowl and will try to help the team get better at stopping the ground attack in order to compete for a playoff spot. Quote from Head Coach: “We return seven players on offense and 10 players on defense for the 2009 season. The strength of our offense going into camp appears to be our offensive line with over 100 total career starts amongst the five starters. Sam Malian returns at quarterback and great things are expected of him. The defense will be veteran with the secondary being a much improved unit. In 2008 a number of freshmen played and gained valuable experience and that short term pain should turn into long term gain in 2009.”

September 12 – Laurier at Western, 1:00pm Head Coach: Greg Marshall 2008 Record: 7-1 (2nd in the OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs. Western: 21-37-1 Current Streak: Western 2 wins Outlook for 2009: The Western Mustangs had a tremendous 2008 season, winning all but one of their regular season games and starting the year with a huge 22-point comeback victory over Ottawa. Western defeated Laurier in the semifinals before winning the Yates Cup over Ottawa. The Mustangs rode their success all the way into the Vanier Cup final before falling to the eventual national champion Laval. This year all-star quarterback Michael Faulds returns for a fifth year to lead an already impressive offence that added even more skill with running back Da’Shawn Thomas and graduate student Joshua Svec at wideout. Last year Western had ten all-stars and three all-Canadians, and returns 15 starters on both offence and defence. Quote from Head Coach: “The loss of Vaughn Martin leaves a big hole,” Marshall said. “Truthfully we don’t have a lot of depth at the defensive end spot. We may have to move some guys out there and try them out there and see (what happens). We’ll be tested at this position right away this season. We have two quarterbacks in Week 1 and Week 2 who can run with (Brad) Sinopoli in Ottawa and Luke Thompson with Laurier. We have to contain them or it’s gonna be a long day.” September 19 – Waterloo vs. Laurier, 1:00pm Head Coach: Dennis McPhee 2008 Record: 2-6 (9th in the OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs. Waterloo: 36-14-1 Current Streak: Laurier 6 wins Outlook for 2009: The Warriors are looking to build on their improvements in 2008 and get back into playoff contention. The offence started to click last season and picked up 90 yards more per game then the previous year. Waterloo’s defence featured the OUA rookie of the year in linebacker Jordan Verdone, who will need to lead the development of the defensive corps now that the starters have another year under their belts. The Warriors have great potential at their skill positions and after returning 19 starters can hope to make the turn from youthful raw talent to veteran experience. Two of those returning players, Fourth year quarterback Evan Martin and fifth year veteran wide receiver Sean Cowie, will have a harder time connecting now that outside threat Josh Svec has transferred to Western. Quote from Head Coach: “There is an expectation every year to get better. There is a high level of commitment to play here at Waterloo. We are closer to raising the level of excellence athletically to the level of the University of Waterloo academically. It is a privilege not a right to play Warrior Football.”

October 17 – Laurier at Guelph, 1:00pm Head Coach: Kyle Walters 2008 Record: 4-4 (4th in the OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs. Guelph: 36-13 Current Streak: Laurier 1 win Outlook for 2009: The Gryphons lost three games by a total of eight points last year leading to an exit in the first round of the playoffs. While the team had the third best point differential, the defence gave up over 600 yards in three games. The running game was second in the country and sees veteran back Nick Fitzgibbon return along with fifth year quarterback Justin Dunk. Guelph will have to cut back on penalties too after being the second most penalized team in the league. With another year of experience the core of the team looks ready to step up and improve on last year’s even record in the regular season. Quote from Head Coach: “This is the foundation for a very strong recruiting class. A lot of these players will be expected to contribute early in their careers. This is a group of young men who are excited to be Gryphons, but more importantly will represent the University of Guelph as student athletes over the next four years. Last season our defence was young and they gained valuable experience and I expect the benefits to be seen this season. I think our defence will be tougher against the run and athletic in the secondary to cover the oppositions receivers”

September 26 – Laurier at McMaster, 1:00pm Head Coach: Stefan Ptaszek 2008 Record: 4-4 (6th in the OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs. McMaster: 41-12-1 Current Streak: Laurier 6 wins Outlook for 2009: The Marauders put on a late charge in the secondhalf of last season to make it into the playoffs after starting 0-3. While they did show spurts of offensive talent, McMaster is looking to become more of a threat to score and put their shutout loss in the playoffs to Laurier firmly in the past. The potential for a rebound year in 2009 is strong as they are returning 17 starters including the entire offensive and defensive lines as well as quarterback Ryan Fantham and slotback Kevin D’Hollander. Where the Marauders will surely be tested is their pass defence, which sees only five experienced DBs in their secondary. Ultimately how they play against other middle of the pack opponents will determine if McMaster can get back into the top four in the OUA. Quote from Head Coach: “I am optimistic about the season. We have a solid group of returning players, coupled with an outstanding recruiting class. I am really looking forward to getting on the field.”

October 24 – Queen’s vs. Laurier, 1:00pm Head Coach: Pat Sheahan 2008 Record: 8-0 (1st in the OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs. Queen’s: 5-5 Current Streak: Queen’s 1 win Outlook for 2009: A perfect season for the first time in 20 years, the nation’s defensive player of the year and coach of the year all contributed to an incredible season for Queen’s, until the playoffs. Boasting the most balanced team on offence in the country the only problem came when injuries to running back Mike Griffin and defensive player of the year Thaine Carter crippled the Gaels in their home loss to Ottawa in the provincial semifinal. The upcoming season will see the core remain intact; giving the Gaels the ability to put up some points, but it will be a torch-passing year on the defensive side of the ball. The front seven will have three new starters with Shomari Williams, a transfer from the University of Houston, being the most anticipated roster addition for Queen’s. Quote from Head Coach: “Guys are coming back with resolve and we have a nucleus of veterans who will have last year in mind.”

MANAGER OF FOOTBALL OPERATIONS AND HEAD COACH

Gary Jeffries enters his 32nd season as part of the Golden Hawk football coaching staff. It was not until 1970 that Gary would find his home at Wilfrid Laurier University. He played football for two years from 1970-1971 and was named an all-star defensive half back and Rookie of the Year. After his career at Laurier he was drafted by the Toronto Argonauts in 1972 and in 1973 he signed with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats but did not report. Gary also played four years in the Detroit Tiger organization prior to beginning his career at Laurier. In 1973 he was hired at Laurier as an assistant football coach and recreation director. From 1984-1988 Jeffries was also the womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s basketball coach at Laurier. In 1989 he took a break from football and coached the menâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s basketball team until 1996. In 1994 Rick Zmich convinced Jeffries to return to the game which he loves so much. Gary has coached 31 football seasons at Laurier, with 19 as Defensive Coordinator. He was named the interim head coach midway through the 2002 season as a result of a labour dispute and was named the full time manager of football operations and head coach in 2003. He has coached in 19 Yates Cups including championship victories in the 1978, 1987, 2004 and 2005 seasons.

RYA N P Y E A R Ryan Pyear enters his fourth season as the Golden Hawk Offensive Coordinator after five outsanding years as Laurier’s starting Quarterback. As a player Ryan enjoyed much success and he now hopes to continue that tradition in the role of Offensive Coordinator. Some of Ryan’s playing accolades include being named as the OUA Rookie of the Year in 2001 after taking every single snap as a freshman. In 2004 Ryan was named as a first-team OUA all-star and second-team all-Canadian, and in 2005 he reached both first-team allconference and first-team all-Canadian status. That same year he was awarded Uteck Bowl and Vanier Cup MVP on the way to Wilfrid Laurier’s national supremacy on the gridiron. Other

awards include back-to-back President’s Awards as Wilfrid Laurier’s top male athlete in 2004 and 2005. Ryan graduated in June 2006, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Kinesiology. He has two brothers, Kyle and Tobin, who also played five years in the OUA and CIS at McMaster and Waterloo respectively. His mother, Betty, and father Barry, currently live in Ryan’s home town of Belleville, Ontario. Barry Pyear is also a football coach at Laurier, coaching the running backs.

Ron Vanmoerkerke is in his eleventh year coaching with the Golden Hawks. He returns again to the role of Defensive Coordinator, a position he has held since the 2003 season. Ron’s track record with Laurier is a long and storied one; he played in the late 80s and was on the 1987 Yates Cup championship team. In 1988, Ron received the WLU Alumni Association Academic and Athletic Achievement Award. In 1989, Ron was named an OUA first-team all-star linebacker and team MVP. J osh A lexander Alexander began his coaching career in the city leagues at age fifteen and won an OVFL Jr. Championship with the Twin City Predators in 2001, where he was the Defensive Coordinator. He played for the Golden Hawks from 1999 to 2003, and in this time was an all-star defensive lineman and Russ Jackson Award winner. After graduating, Alexander accepted a position as a graduate assistant coach at Mississippi College in Jackson, MS. where he was the offensive ;ine and tight ends coach. During this time, he attended Mississippi College where he obtained his Masters in Business Education. Dan coached in Burlington for 16 years in the minor system as well as the high school level, he has coached both offense and defense. WATERLOO – The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks opened the 2008 football campaign with a 15-13 win over the Guelph Gryphons in front of a crowd of 2,697 at Knight-Newbrough Field.

Chima Ihekwoaba (Burlington, Ont.) was the only one to bring a quarterback down, sacking Dunk and moving the ball back nine yards.

Late in the fourth quarter, Guelph kicker Rob Maver had an opportunity to take the victory but was wide to the left on a 28 yard field goal picking up only a single instead. Maver put the only points on the board for the Gryphons nailing three of five field goals including a 36 yarder.

“Errors are going to happen in week one and they did on both sides and although we recovered this time,” said Manager of Football Operations and Head Coach Gary Jeffries when asked about turnovers today. “Execution both physically and mentally will need to get better for us to play next week against Western.”

Third year receiver Jeff Emberley’s (Oakville, Ont.) third quarter 42-yard touchdown catch from quarterback Ian Noble (West Vancouver, B.C.) was the game winner in the contest. The touchdown was his first in the purple and gold uniform. Laurier’s other touchdown came early on as rookie linebacker Mitchell Bosch (Langley, B.C.) picked off Justin Dunk and carried the ball back 57 yards for the major.

The play capped off an impressive drive for Wilfrid Laurier that started deep in their own territory.

WATERLOO - The trend continued for the number five nationally ranked Western Mustangs as they recovered from a ten-point first quarter deficit to defeat the number six ranked Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks 31-20 at Knight-Newbrough Field, University Stadium in front of 6,432 fans.

After a 27-yard Chris Mamo (London, Ont.) field goal that gave Laurier the 10-0 lead in the first quarter, Western began to put some plays together.

In the first half, Wilfrid Laurier opened up a 10-0 lead in a dominating the first quarter of play. Luke Thompson (London, Ont.) saw the helm of the offence after Ian Noble (West Vancouver, B.C.) injured himself earlier in the week. In his first go he completed 21 of 39 for 279 yards and rushed for 70 yards. He converted on a second and ten early in the game to pick up one of Laurier’s touchdowns to make the score 7-0.

The ‘Stangs turnaround began with a great set of defensive stances in the second quarter. Then some strong running from backup running back John Leckie (Georgetown, Ont.) and timely big plays from receivers Nick Trevail (London, Ont.) and Jesse Bellamy (Guelph, Ont.) gave Western life. Michael Faulds led Western to 272 yards in the air while the ground attack saw John Leckie carry for 108 yards and two majors.

Mike Van Praet was a menace on defence recording a sack and forcing several quick throws from Thompson while John Surla, last week’s OUA male athlete of the week, was solid again with key tackles. On the Golden Hawk side, Mitchell Bosch (Langley, B.C.) had a second solid week picking up five tackles. Veteran Joe Labenski (Welland, Ont.) returned to the line-up this week and made himself known taking down Faulds. Chima Ihekwoaba (Burlington, Ont.), Sam Aird (Ancaster, Ont.) and Giancarlo Rapanaro (Niagara Falls, Ont.) all picked up sacks as well. “We couldn’t stop them right away and the offence got a lot of two-and-outs today,” commented veteran linebacker Luke Pinder (Kitchener, Ont.) who returned to the lineup after sitting a week due to injury. “They took what [yardage] was available and use formations to beat us.” Pinder picked up 6.5 tackles (5 solo) as well as two breakups.

KINGSTON – The number 10 nationally ranked Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks were devastated with a 41-7 loss in Kingston when they faced the number five Queen’s Gaels in front of 4,127 fans at Richardson Stadium. The loss makes the team record 1-2 and puts the Hawks with a losing record for the first time since 2002.

Rookie defensive back Peter Mcdougall (Oshawa, Ont.) picked up two of the other interceptions while Mitchell Bosch (Langley, B.C.) got the final one.

“We opened up with a hard schedule and three competitive teams,” said manager of football operations and head coach Gary Jeffries when asked to comment on the record. “We’re in the meat of the schedule and we’ll learn from today’s performance as we look to next weekend’s homecoming game.”

Chris Mamo (London, Ont.) had another strong punting performance kicking an average of 41.7 yards over 15 times including three into the red zone. The fourth year punter, along with some great return coverage played a significant role in the battle for field position today.

Dan Brannagan (Burlington, Ont.) led the Gaels to a net offence of 639 yards including 438 over his 22 completions in the contest. Brannagan threw five interceptions including one returned by Courtney Stephen (Brampton, Ont.) 37 yards eventually leading to Laurier’s only touchdown of the day.

The Golden Hawk offence didn’t move the ball many yards as the team netted 60 yards. Of the 25 drives in the contest, a total of five were for offensive yardage greater than 10 yards. The turning point of the game came when Laurier was down 15-8 with 1:31 before the half and Luke Thompson engineered a 12 play-drive into the end-zone. The final two plays were a 21-yard reception to Chambers and a 29-yard catch for Bishop and the score to tie up the game.

WATERLOO – The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks compiled 481 yards of offence against the visiting Windsor Lancers defeating them 33-18 in front of a boisterous Homecoming crowd of 8,249 at University Stadium.

In the second half, the Golden Hawks continued to march the ball up field scoring twice on runs by Chambers and Ryan Lynch (Waterloo, Ont.). Then the Laurier defence stepped up and shut down the Lancers passing game.

“We executed on our plan, and that was a huge key for us,” said Manager of Football Operations and Head Coach Gary Jeffries. “We moved the ball on offence today and got the stops we need to on defence.”

Next up, Windsor (2-2) will host the No. 5 Ottawa Gee Gee (3-1) on Saturday. Laurier (2-2) will travel the University of Waterloo (1-3) to take on the Warriors.

Luke Thompson (London, Ont.) threw for 302 yards and two touchdowns as well as running for another 47 yards. His primary targets were Josh Bishop (Mississauga, Ont.) and Shamawd Chambers (Markham, Ont.) who had 132 yards and 76 yards respectively as well as a touchdown a piece. Chambers also ran for 23 yards and a TD. CIS record holder Daryl Stephenson (London, Ont.) was held to 61 yards on ten attempts by a stingy Hawk rush defence which only gave up 81 total yards on the ground. Earlier in the contest Troy Leach (Barrie, Ont.) caught two touchdown receptions within one-minute. Just before the quarterbreak, he had a 34-yard reception, and after, a 42-yard catch to start the second after Giancarlo Rapanaro (Niagara Falls, Ont.) picked up one of his two interceptions of the day. Shane Burns (Burlington, Ont.) had the other off of Warrior quarterback Evan Martin. Burns also led the team with seven tackles (six solo) on the day.

“Hawks take Battle of Waterloo 38-23” “Laurier finished on top despite 14 penalties for 145 yards” by Ari Grossman WATERLOO – Quarterback Luke Thompson of London, Ont. connected for 357 yards as the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks defeated the University of Waterloo Warriors 38-23 in front of a Waterloo homecoming crowd of 2,200 at Warrior Field.

Martin moved the ball for 318 yards over 23 completions and was sacked three times by Steve Cormack (Waterloo, Ont.), Spencer Troop (Georgetown, Ont.) and Joe Labeski (Welland, Ont.). Marvin McCoory led the black and gold on the ground with 77 yards and a major.

“There were so many times today when I threw [the ball] up there and they weren’t the prettiest balls today but our receivers came through and made the play,” commented Thompson on his overall performance. “The strength of our offence is our receivers and we’ve got to continue to get the ball to them and they will continue to make great plays.”

After going up early in the contest 14-2, the Hawks weren’t able to get back the momentum they needed, getting caught deep in their own zone and conceding multiple safeties.

Thompson found three different receivers before scoring a touchdown of his own on the ground. The second year pivot connected 17 of 26 attempts including four touchdowns and a 57 yard reception in the wet penalty filled contest. In total 24 penalties for 208 yards were assessed to both teams with the Hawks picking up the majority at 14 for 145.

“They had a couple of plays on us and stuck it in the end zone and we didn’t help with some of the errors we made,” stated Jeffries. “They were successful in stopping our momentum multiple times, however in the fourth our guys made some key plays.”

“We’re very fortunate to come out of [Warrior Field] with the win,” said Manager of Football Operations and Head Coach Gary Jeffries. “Full credit to the Waterloo coaches and players for the game they played today. We’ve got a lot of talent but we aren’t playing to that level right now - we’re going to. I’m happy we got the win, but disappointed at the way we played.”

Laurier’s kicking game saw Chris Mamo (London, Ont.) have 11 kickoffs as a result of all the safeties. Mamo also hit the uprights twice in the contest on field goal attempts, with only one of the two falling between for the points. Ryan Lynch (Waterloo, Ont.) was just short of 100 yards on the day as he carried the ball 17 times for 83 yards including a 30-yard carry late in the game. Josh Bishop (Mississauga, Ont.) had the final seven-point grab on a 30-yard pass.

Shamawd Chambers (Markham, Ont.) named Laurier’s Ray Owens memorial player of the game, led the offence with 119 yards in receptions including a 37-yard touchdown reception. Chambers leads the team in both receptions and touchdowns with 27 and four on the season.

“Today was like two steps forward and one back,” said Thompson on the penalty situation. “If we can limit that we’ll be fine next week in Ottawa.”

“Waterloo came hard at us today like we expected, with their homecoming and their fans,” said Chambers post-game. When asked about the penalties, including an unnecessary roughness that he was assessed, he showed a little more disappointment in the tone of his voice stating that “At the end of the day the penalties shouldn’t happen, but they did, and we’ll have to work on them in order to become a more disciplined team.”

The Golden Hawks (3-2) now travel to the nation’s capital to face the Ottawa Gee Gee’s (3-2) on October 4th. OTTAWA – The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks scored 17 points in the second and third quarters to upset the number 7 nationally ranked University of Ottawa Gee Gee’s 22-21 in front of 1,590 fans at Frank Clair Stadium.

“Luke made a great play he scrambled out and found me down field,” commented Leach on the key catch post-game. “Thank goodness I caught it and finished it off.”

The win ends an eight game win streak at home for Ottawa who the Golden Hawks haven’t been able to defeat since back in 2005, the year Laurier went undefeated and won the Vanier Cup.

Mitchell Bosch (Langley, B.C.) led the team in tackles on the day with seven tackles (six solo) and now leads the team overall with 28. Bosch and Shane Burns (Burlington, Ont.) both forced fumbles on the day while Giancarlo Rapanaro (Niagara Falls, Ont.) picked one up as well as had 3.5 tackles on the day. Sacobie was sacked once for a loss of 11 yards by George Kourtesiotis (Toronto, Ont.) and Joe Labenski (Welland, Ont.).

“We came in here and looked at this as a chance to get a home playoff game,” said an excited head coach Gary Jeffries after the game when asked about the significance of beating Ottawa. “Today is the first time in six games that we played as a full football team. We became a team and played all three aspects of the game.”

“We’re going to have to bring a better game than we did today next week to our house as we know McMaster is a dangerous team and we’re expecting their best,” said Leach when asked about week seven action.

Quarterback Luke Thompson (London, Ont.) completed seven of 20 passes on the day for 137 yards and two touchdowns including a 75 yard touchdown catch by Troy Leach (Barrie, Ont.). The pass to Leach came as Thompson was being faced with pressure and was almost sacked. The second year quarterback opened the day with a pair of interceptions as his only completions, but was able to rebound. In addition to the passing, Thompson led the team in rushing with 97 yards.

The Golden Hawks (4-2) return home next week to host the McMaster Marauders (3-3) at Knight-Newbrough Field, University Stadium at 1:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast locally on Rogers Television in Grand River.

“We came out sluggish and coach challenged us to come together at half,” commented Thompson on the 124 yards of offence in the first half. “The team made it happen and it feels great to come out of here with the win.” Leach’s 75-yard catch made him the top receiver of the day. Third year receiver Josh Bishop (Mississauga, Ont.) was just behind him with 46 yards including a major of his own on a 26-yard catch. The Golden Hawk offence finished the day with 313 yards while Ottawa had 275. Ottawa opened scoring after conceding a safety early in the contest. Sacobie connected with Gharone McLean and Justin Wood-Roy for two majors within five minutes in the second to put the garnet and grey up 14-2. Laurier closed the gap with the Bishop’s touchdown. At the half, Ottawa had netted 183 yards with 120 in the air.

“We have York next week and we aren’t going to take that lightly,” commented Thompson. “We’re going to continue to get better.” Wilfrid Laurier travels to Toronto to face the York Lions for their final regular season game on Saturday, October 18, 2008. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. and the game will be live on Rogers Television in Toronto.

With the win the Hawks have now secured a home playoff date as the OUA Quarterfinal will take place on Saturday, October 25th at 1:00 p.m. at Knight-Newbrough Field. “We’re just scratching the surface on our potential,” said starting pivot Luke Thompson. “When our receivers get the ball in their hands, they just make something special happen.” Thompson used eight different receivers throughout the game including a 101 yard touchdown reception to Josh Bishop (Mississauga, Ont.). His other two receiving sevenpoint scores went to Shamawd Chambers (Markham, Ont.) and Troy Leach (Barrie, Ont.). The Golden Hawk quarterback also rushed for 76 yards in nine attempts and two touchdowns. Marauder quarterback Ryan Fantham (London, Ont.) completed 33 passes for 497 yards including four touchdowns and two interceptions. His top target was Kevin D’Hollander who caught 12 receptions for 199 yards and two scores. McMaster scored all of their majors through the air. The game went back and forth until the beginning of the third quarter when the Hawks broke open the game by scoring 21 points. McMaster attempted to surge in the fourth, but Laurier capitalized on turnovers to negate the Marauders advantage. “Hawks down Lions 50-13” “Many faces see field as Hawks prepare for playoff action” by Ari Grossman TORONTO - The #10 Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks easily handed the winless York Lions a 50-13 defeat at York Stadium in front of a crowd largely made up of purple-and-gold fans.

The Golden Hawks opened scoring five minutes into the contest on a 45-yard pass to Malott and didn’t look back from there.

In what was the only meaningless game in week eight of provincial football action, the Hawks saw 115 yards of penalties over 14 calls. York had nine for 105 yards.

Kicker Chris Mamo of London, Ont. had another strong performance punting four times for 197 yards including a 60-yard boot. He converted all six converts as well as nailed both 35 and 37 field goals.

“We’ll clean up the penalties as we go,” commented quarterback Luke Thompson of London, Ont. “Today’s performance is nothing we can’t fix and the real season starts now.”

“I’ve worked hard all season to improve my punting performance,” commented Mamo on the average of 41.3 he has had all season. Mamo now sits third all-time in the record books in punting yardage in a career with 2,718 yards. He’s second in number of punts in a career with 213.

In other contests across the OUA, McMaster, Ottawa, Western and Queen’s won their final games setting up playoff action. Laurier (6-2) will return to Waterloo to host the McMaster Marauders (4-4) in the OUA quarterfinals on Saturday, October 25th at University Stadium in Waterloo with a 1:07 p.m. kickoff while the other quarterfinal will see Ottawa travel to Guelph on the Score Television network.

The defensive game saw York accumulate 234 yards to Laurier’s 519. Scott McCahill (Kingston, Ont.) led the team with five solo tackles. Courtney Stephen (Brampton, Ont.) had an interception off of York veteran quarterback Bart Zemanek who finished his career with a 14 for 34 and 183-yard performance.

York broke two OUA records today with the completion of their winless regular season having the most points scored against them in a season (471) and fewest points scored in a season (32).

“There are some young guys playing some great football today but there is still an experience factor that comes in CIS football,” said linebacker Luke Bendus (Cambridge, Ont.) when asked about the new faces in the week eight lineup. Bendus was injured in week one with a concussion that saw him sit for several weeks but is now seeing time both as part of the defence and special teams. “I’m happy with my performance but it has taken me a bit to get back to where I was before the injury.”

The win ended the Golden Hawk record at 6-2 after opening the year with a win and then two losses. “We’re pleased to be where we are at 6-2,” commented Gary Jeffries post-game. “The start of the year we expected a similar record as a result of the schedule we had and now we’ll have to get better and prepare for next week.”

“McMaster put up a lot of yardage against us last week in Waterloo,” commented Coach Jeffries on seeing the Marauders in the first round of the playoffs. “We are going to have to do a better job against them defensively.”

Five of the six touchdown markers in the contest were thrown in the air. Thompson completed 10 of 17 for 185 yards and three majors in the first half of play before Ian Noble (West Vancouver, B.C.) relieved him with 198 yards and two additional touchdowns. “We’re a throwing football team,” commented Jeffries when asked about the rushing yardage of 137 in the contest. “We’d like to run a bit more but we use the athletes we’ve got and make the plays however we need to.”

Mitchell Bosch (Langley, B.C.) led the team with eight tackles (six solo, four assisted) and a fumble recovery, followed by Peter Mcdougall (Oshawa, Ont.) with seven (five solo, two assisted), Dustin Hayman (Toronto, Ont.) with six (six solo).

WATERLOO – Ryan Lynch rushed for 229 yards as the #8 nationally ranked Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks shutout the McMaster Marauders 29-0 in one of the provincial quarter-finals in front of 1,404 fans on a damp wind blown day.

The Marauders were led on defence by Denver Brown with six (four solo, four assisted) followed by Elliot Hudecki who had 5.5 tackles (five solo, one assisted). Mike Wysocki was also a standout with 5.5 tackles, one sack, one forced fumble and one knockdown.

“We were outplayed and out coached, ”said McMaster head coach Stefan Ptasek. “Coach VanMoerkerke did an excellent job with his defence today.”

The Golden Hawks will now advance to the OUA Semifinal against the University of Western Ontario Mustangs in London. The game will take place on Saturday, November 1st at 1:00 p.m. at TD Waterhouse Stadium.

McMaster was held to 259 yards of offence and had five turnovers. Laurier recovered both their fumbles and had 378 yards with 343 of those on the ground. “We really came together and played well,” said Lynch (Waterloo, Ont.) who led the contest rushing. “The credit really goes to our offensive line as they made some amazing blocks for me.” Both Laurier touchdowns in the game came through the air as both Shamawd Chambers (Markham, Ont.) and Brian Malott (Kitchener, Ont.) scored the majors for the purple and gold. Chris Mamo also went three for five while kicking field goals. His longest was from 38 yards away. Quarterback Luke Thompson (London, Ont.) had a modest day completing 10 of 15 for 69 yards and two scores. Chambers was the only receiver to record more than one catch for Laurier with five for 31 yards. McMaster’s only chance to score was on a 45-yard field goal attempt which ende up hitting the uprights. Marauder quarterback Ryan Fantham went 14 for 25 for 165 yards with three interceptions. His number one target was Kevin D’Hollander who caught seven passes for 104 yards in the loss. The Laurier defence stood strong in the game recovering four fumbles and nabbing three interceptions. “Coach V really challenged us to play better after the last game against McMaster, ” said corner back Taurean Allen (Etobicoke, Ont.) who pulled down one of the Hawks picks. “We’re really

Up 33-7, Laurier began to close the gap but ran out of time. Returner Dillon Heap (Waterloo, Ont.) had an impressive 94-yard carry to move the ball back a+fter the second Western major but things just didn’t work out as Western was able to punch the ball loose later on a punt return with two-minutes remaining to eventually get three points.

“Mustangs end Hawks season 36-28” “Hawks run out of time in second half 25-point rally“ by Ari Grossman LONDON – The No. 7 nationally ranked Laurier Golden Hawks generated a 25 point second half but fell short, losing to the No. 3 Western Mustangs 36-28 at TD Waterhouse Stadium in front of a crowd of 3,307. “This football team will never quit; the people outside this program can write us off as much as they want and we weren’t supposed to be here but we were and we competed,” said Manager of Football Operations and head coach Gary Jeffries. “This game is another experience that we will learn from and we’ll grow and be back here next year.”

The Laurier defence played a strong game, despite seeing a lot of field time. Defensive lineman Steve Cormack (Waterloo, Ont.) had three sacks on Faulds while adding a recovery of one of Western’s three fumbles and a pair of tackles. Defensive back Dustin Hayman (Toronto, Ont.) led the team in tackles with eight (six solo).

With five minutes and 19 seconds remaining in the third quarter Ian Noble (West Vancouver, B.C.) stepped in for starting quarterback Luke Thompson (London, Ont.) and generated some momentum to move the ball. Thompson had seen pressure from the Western front seven and saw trouble throwing five interceptions on top of his six completions for 62 yards. “We played our hearts out,” said Noble who completed 11 of 16 for 146 yards and three touchdowns. “No one is satisfied with the way it went but we didn’t roll over and surrender – we did what we practiced and pushed as hard as we could.”

“Today’s game was tiring, but we talked about coming out in the second half with everything we had and things started clicking,” commented Cormack. “This wasn’t even supposed to be a game – we were underdogs and we gave them all we had. It can only be positive from here.”

The veteran quarterback who hasn’t played since York in week eight led three drives that saw scoring opportunities throwing touchdown passes to B.J. Malott (Kitchener, Ont.) and Shamawd Chambers (Markham, Ont.). Thompson completed his touchdown to Josh Bishop (Mississauga, Ont.).

The game ends the careers of Golden Hawk veterans Jordan Van Horn, Kyle Somerville, Adam Bestard, Ian Noble, Luke Pinder, Scott Evans, Ryan Lynch, Troy Leach, Joe Labenski, Jordan Schaus, Paul Hancock, Wayne Brock, Casey Potter and Jeremy Chemij.

Running back Ryan Lynch (Waterloo, Ont.) led the team’s rushing game with his 12 touches for 56 yards. Thompson was just behind him as the only other rusher with 36 net yards on five carries.

“I’m proud to be apart of this program and have had some part of an impact on the younger faces,” said veteran linebacker Luke Pinder. “The maturity the rookies is just so impressive – who would have thought we would be dressing and starting so many in this program.”

Early on Western was only able to score off of field goals by Darryl Wheeler. The kicker nailed four in the first half including one from 38 yards before running back Nathan Riva picked up the first Mustang major at the six-minute mark of the third. Riva went on to cause havoc with the Golden Hawk defence carrying the ball 28 times for 173 yards including a touchdown while quarterback Michael Faulds threw for 355 yards on 20 completions.

While the group of veterans move on from the football program, a strong group of rookies have come on board and will make their presence known in years to come.

The Mitchell Bowl was first awarded in 2002, replacing the Atlantic Bowl, after the CIS voted in 2001 to change the permanent site of the Atlantic Bowl in the interest of competitive fairness. During that year, the Mitchell Bowl played opposite to that of the Churchill Bowl. However, with the introduction of the Uteck Bowl in 2003, the Mitchell Bowl replaced and assumed the history of the Churchill Bowl.

St. F.X. 40 Waterloo Lutheran 14

St. Francis Xavier quarterback Terry Dolan marshalled a 40-14 victory over Waterloo Lutheran (now Wilfrid Laurier) in the second and final invitational Vanier Cup Game. Dolan completed 12 out of 19 passes for 4 touchdowns and 284 yards. Receiver Terry Gorman caught 6 of them for 131 yards and 3 TDs, setting a Vanier Cup record and earning the Ted Morris Trophy. 1968

Queen’s 42 Waterloo Lutheran 14

Queen’s rambled to a 42-14 romp over Waterloo Lutheran, utilizing powerful aerial and ground attacks. On the ground it was Keith Eaman running for 93 yards and 2 TDs and Don McIntyre was on the receiving end of two of three Don Bayne TD passes. Bayne finished the game with 250 yards passing and was selected MVP. 1972

Alberta 20 Waterloo Lutheran 7

The Cup went West again as Alberta defeated Waterloo Lutheran 20-7. The Golden Bears used three quarterbacks to secure the win with appearances by Gary Weisbrot, Terry Cairnes and Roy Beechey. Waterloo Lutheran’s Gerry Blacker scored a touchdown and rushed for 134 yards in a solid performance as the Golden Hawks suffered their third Vanier Cup loss.

The Hawks won their first Vanier Cup in 1991. They beat Mt. Allison by a score of 25-18 to give them the title of National Champions.

Laurier 25 Mt. Allison 18

The Laurier Golden Hawks took home the Vanier Cup for the first time with a 25-18 victory over the Mount Allison Mounties before more than 30,000 fans at the SkyDome. Laurier running back Andy Cecchini carried 22 times for 130 yards and tied a Vanier Cup record with three touchdowns. The Golden Hawks, OUA and Churchill Bowl champions, jumped out to an early 11-0 lead in the first quarter as Cecchini ran one yard for his first touchdown. Laurier took a large lead in the third quarter on a two-yard run by Cecchini and a 19-yard pass from QB Bill Kubas to Cecchini to make the score 24-4. The Mounties, however, staged a spirited comeback as Grant Keaney ran 27 yards for a touchdown and slotback Mark Huys caught a 33-yard touchdown pass from Sean Hickey. The Laurier defense tightened up late in the game and preserved the victory. Cecchini won the Ted Morris Trophy as the game’s outstanding player. 2005

Laurier 24 Saskatchewan 23

With just 19 seconds left on the clock, Brian Devlin connected on a 32-yard field goal, giving the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks a 24-23 win over the Saskatchewan Huskies and their second ever National Title. The game was played in front of 16,827 fans at Ivor Wynne Stadium in Hamilton. The majority of the raucous crowd clad in Purple and Gold. Golden Hawks supporters didn’t leave disappointed, as the Hawks became only the 10th team in Canadian University history to finisImage 1 from Golden Season, Golden Finishh a season undefeated (12-0). Quarterback Ryan Pyear took home the Ted Morris Trophy as the game’s MVP; finishing 20 for 30 for 254 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Laurier grads get jobs, with 95% of our recent graduates securing employment within six months after graduating, Laurier’s employment rates are among the highest in the province. Our innovative programs attract the best and brightest students from across the world. Last year, 85.37 % of our first year students had an incoming average of 75% or higher. Our co-op programs within the Faculty of Arts, the Faculty of Science, and the School of Business and Economics, present students with the opportunity to pair quality work experience with their academics.

The University Stadium which seats 6500 people is the home to many Golden Hawk Varsity Teams.

Laurier is in top spot among Ontario’s universities in the Primarily Undergraduate category of the Maclean’s Annual Rankings of Universities, and is second overall in the country in the reputational ranking. Laurier finished fifth overall in the Primarily Undergraduate category, up two spots from last year’s seventh place ranking. The university is Ontario’s top performer in key student-related categories such as Average Entering Grade and Proportion of Students with (entering averages of ) 75% or higher. Laurier also improved in Student Services as a Percentage of Budget, and retained its second place finish overall in Scholarships and Bursaries.

Laurier is known across the country as an institution with high quality students and professors, and a community environment that fosters academic and personal growth. We consistently come out strong in reputational surveys such as Maclean’s Annual Rankings of Universities and the Globe and Mail Rankings.

The university had its best-ever showing in reputation, finishing second overall in the country. In the individual reputational categories, Laurier finished third in Highest Quality, third in Most Innovative, third in Leaders of Tomorrow, and second in Best Overall.

The John Aird Center, which acts as the main entrance to the campus, was built in 1988. Visit the Robert Langen Art Gallery for a touch of art and stop by the Maureen Forrester Recital Hall to hear the internationally renowned Penderecki String Quartet.

HISTORY OF WILFRID LAURIER UNIVERSITY In 1910 the Canada Synod and Synod of Central Canada of the Lutheran Church entered into an agreement to establish a Lutheran Seminary. Though the location first proposed for the Seminary was Toronto, Waterloo was selected when its citizens offered a tract of land on the boundary of the town. The choice of location was affected, too, by the fact that the majority of Lutherans in Ontario lived in the vicinity of Waterloo and Berlin (Kitchener). In 1911 the Evangelical Lutheran Seminary of Canada opened its doors. Facilities for pre-theological education were established in 1914 with courses leading to senior matriculation given in Waterloo College School. In 1924 the Waterloo College of Arts, providing courses in post-secondary education in a four year program, was established. In 1925 the Faculty of Arts, under the name of Waterloo College, affiliated with the University of Western Ontario. Waterloo College soon began to offer Honours degree programs in the arts. The affiliation with the University of Western Ontario ended in 1960 when the Seminary obtained a revised charter changing the name of the institution to Waterloo Lutheran University. On November 1, 1973, Waterloo Lutheran University became Wilfrid Laurier University, one of Ontarioâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s provincially assisted universities after Bill 178 was given Royal Assent by the Lieutenant Governor, former Wilfrid Laurier University Chancellor William Ross Macdonald.
