MEDIA INFORMATION Interview Policy During the season, all interviews should be made through Manager of Football Operations and Head Coach Gary Jeffries or Coordinator, Communications Jamie Howieson. Following games, all players and coaches will be available for comment on the field.
Communications Assistance The Golden Hawk Communications Office is at your service to assist you with your coverage of Laurier Football. Coordinator, Communications Jamie Howieson will be happy to serve you during the season. For information regarding credentials, team and player information, interviews, statistics, pictures, and press releases, please call Jamie (519-884-0710 ext. 3492).
Stadium Directions To reach Laurier from Highway 401, take exit 278B (coming from London) or 278 (coming from Toronto) and follow Highway 8 West to Highway 86 North - Waterloo and continue to University Avenue; follow University Avenue West past campus to Albert Street. Turn left on Albert, then right on Seagram Drive. The Stadium is on the left hand side.
Communications Office The Wilfrid Laurier University Communications Offices are in Rooms 242 and 243 in the Athletic Complex. These rooms are to the right when entering the building’s main entrance.
Game Day Information One hour before the beginning of each game, media guides and game notes packages (game preview, lineups, current statistics, and depth charts) will be available in the stadium’s press box. Official statistics will be available approximately 45 minutes after the game, as well as on the OUA website (http://www.oua.ca) within two hours of completion of the game. Game stats are distributed in the press box thoughout the game, though they are unofficial.
Media Credentials All requests for press or photo credentials should be directed to Ari Grossman, Manager, Communications & Business Operations at least one day prior to the game via phone or email. Due to press box space constraints, visiting media are asked to request as soon as possible.

OUTLOOK September 5 – Laurier at York, 1:00pm Head Coach: Warren Craney 2010 Record: 0-8 (9th OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs. York: 33-5-0 Current Streak: Laurier 7 wins Outlook for 2011: The rebuild under Head Coach Warren Craney continues for the Lions this season as the team searches for their first win in nearly four years. Offensively, QB Nick Coutu will once again be under centre for the Lions with REC Jonelle Tolbert expected to see a majority of the passes come his way after leading the team in receiving a year ago. Linebacker Steven Reading will once again be a leader on defence for York as he has been near the top of the league in tackles for the last two season. Defensive End Patrick Russell looks to continue his solid play on the defensive line after picking up 15 tackles last year. Quote from Head Coach: “We are a very young team this year but loaded with talent and we expect to be more competitive this season. Our expectations for this team are high and the players will have to grow up on the field in a hurry, but the coaching staff feels they are ready and we are all looking forward to seeing them in action.”
October 1 – Ottawa vs. Laurier (Homecoming), 1:00pm Head Coach: Jean-Philippe Asselin 2010 Record: 7-1 (T-1st OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs. Ottawa: 10-14-1 Current Streak: Ottawa 3 wins Outlook for 2011: Ottawa’s first season under rookie head coach J.P. Asselin was nearly perfect for the Gee-Gees. The team cruised to top spot in the OUA and only a last-second field goal by Western prevented them from capturing the Yates Cup. However, many of the players that helped the team succeed last year will be gone and it will be up to a much younger squad to try and match last year’s success. Offensively, watch out for receiver Steven Hughes and running back Brendan Gillanders while linebacker Tyler Sawyer and defensive back Chris Daly will be key contributors on the defensive side of the ball. Quote from Head Coach: “I am very happy and honoured to be back as head coach for the uOttawa football team. It’s exciting to have the opportunity to keep building on what we achieved, and to keep working towards the ultimate goal of bringing home the Vanier Cup.”
September 10 – Windsor vs. Laurier, 7:00pm Head Coach: Joe D’Amore 2010 Record: 2-6 (8th OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs. Windsor: 35-11-2 Current Streak: Laurier 4 wins Outlook for 2011: The Windsor Lancers will be a veteran team this season as they return 19 starters from 2010. On offence, the team will once again rely on QB Sam Malian who looks to bounce back from an injury-plagued season. Receiver Jordan Brescacin, a 2011 East West Bowl participant, highlights the receiving core while Nick Corrado anchors the offensive line. Defensively, the Lancers boast two East West participants in linebacker Akeem Whoner and defensive lineman Seamus Postuma, both of whom are keys in shutting down the oppositions run game. Quote from Head Coach: “We have a committed group of players who have work tirelessly over the last six months in preparation for the upcoming season. With a new coaching staff in place and some key new additions to the roster, our success will be directly tied to how fast we come together as a team.”
October 6 – Laurier at Waterloo, 7:00pm Head Coach: Dennis McPhee 2010 Record: N/A Laurier All-Time Record vs. Waterloo: 35-14-1 Current Streak: Laurier 7 wins Outlook for 2011: Waterloo returns to the OUA this season after seeing their team suspended for the entire 2010 campaign. Despite missing an entire year of action, the Warriors will have a number of veteran players in their lineup who should help transition a team that brought in over 40 recruits in the offseason. Under centre, Waterloo boasts two fifth year pivots in Luke Balch and Evan Martin. REC Dustin Zender, who played for Laurier last year, returns to Waterloo for his final year of eligibility. Linebacker Brad Morton will run be a strong run stopper as will defensive linemen Aaron King and Djordje Gavrilovic. Quote from Head Coach: “It is great to be moving forward to a regular season now that we have brought scrutiny to a problem that needed to be scrutinized. We have a great group of young men who dedicated the past year to getting better, but we have a great group of recruits coming in. It’s going to be fun to have a competitive camp leading into the 2011 season.”
September 17 – Laurier at Queen’s, 1:00pm Head Coach: Pat Sheahan 2010 Record: 3-5 (T-6th OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs. Queen’s: 7-6-0 Current Streak: Laurier 2 wins Outlook for 2011: After an up and down season following their Vanier Cup win in 2009, the Queen’s Gaels are a young team that promises to make noise in the OUA this year. QB Billy McPhee takes over the starting duties this year after Justin Chapdelaine moved to receiver in the off-season. Expect RB Ryan Granberg to get the majority of the carries in the backfield. On defence, a young core led by 2010 OUA Rookie of the Year Sam Sabourin and defensive lineman Frank Pankewich and John Miniaci promise to be much better than a year ago when the Gaels failed to knock off any of the league’s top teams. Quote from Head Coach: “Although we may have not had the same success from 2009, we certainly grew from our experience and will be able to transform that into stronger results this season. Our young core now has a full year of experience under their belt and I have every reason to believe we will be a contending team this year.”
October 15 – McMaster vs. Laurier, 1:00pm Head Coach: Stefan Ptaszek 2009 Record: 6-2 (3rd OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs. McMaster: 39-13-1 Current Streak: McMaster 1 win Outlook for 2011: After coming up short in the playoffs the last two season, McMaster will have a veteran squad seeking to finally get over the hump in 2011. On defence, fifth year linebacker Ryan Chmielewski leads the Marauders while OUA All-Star lineman Roberto Filice and Scott Caterine should give opposing quarterbacks trouble in the backfield. QB Kyle Quinlan returns for his fourth year and will guide a talented offensive unit that includes RB Joey Nemet as well as receievers Michael DiCroce and Matthew Peressini. Quote from Head Coach: “We have a tremendous amount of talent returning at the skill positions on offence and defence. Our linebackers, defensive backs, running backs, quarterbacks and receivers are a senior group and they can flat out make plays. The questions for us for 2011 are at the line of scrimmage. Our offensive line and defensive line has had some turnover and some graduation at those spots and how we fill those spots will dictate how we do.”
September 24 – Laurier vs. Western, 1:00pm Head Coach: Greg Marshall 2010 Record: 7-1 (T-1st OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs Western: 21-41-0 Current Streak: Western 5 wins Outlook for 2011: The reigning OUA Champions will be looking to build on their season from a year ago after they were narrowly defeated by the eventual Vanier Cup champions, the Laval Rouge et Or, in the Uteck Bowl. Greg Marshall’s team will once again be guided by QB Donnie Marshall and the running back duo of Nathan Riva and Jerimy Hipperson, all of whom present different challenges for opposing defences. While the defence returns just six starters from 2010, Western boasts a talented defensive line, anchored by Mike Van Praet and David Lee. Quote from Head Coach: “We are excited about the prospects for this upcoming season. We return with a very experienced group of veterans and have some outstanding recruits, which will make for a competitive training camp. The OUA will be a very balanced conference and we open with Waterloo, McMaster and then Laurier so we need to come out of training camp ready to compete at our best.”
October 22 – Laurier at Guelph, 1:00pm Head Coach: Stu Lang 2009 Record: 4-4 (T-4th OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs. Guelph: 39-13-0 Current Streak: Laurier 3 wins Outlook for 2011: One year after losing the the Golden Hawks in the OUA Quarter-finals, the Gryphons will be looking to build upon the success of last year. Chris Rossetti, who enters his third season with Guelph and second as the starting quarterback, will be expected to continue his development and should benefit from the addition of offensive coordinator Todd Galloway. His prime receiver will be fifth year Jedd Gardner, fresh off an appearance at the Toronto Argonauts’ training camp. On defence, the team has lost standout linebacker Adam Dunk. His presence will be replaced by Cameron Thorn on the defensive line as well as defensive back Mark Durigon, who has 11 interceptions with Guelph over the previous two seasons.

MANAGER OF FOOTBALL OPERATIONS AND HEAD COACH
Gary Jeffries enters his 47th coaching season in Canadian university sport at Wilfrid Laurier University. He has coached for 34 season with the football team, including nine as head coach, five as head coach of women’s basketball and eight as head coach of men’s basketball. It was not until 1970 that Gary would find his home at Wilfrid Laurier University. He played football for two years from 19701971 and was named an allstar defensive half back and Rookie of the Year. After his career at Laurier he was drafted by the Toronto Argonauts in 1972 and in 1973 he signed with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Gary also played four years in the Detroit Tiger organization prior to beginning his career at Laurier. In 1973 he was hired at Laurier as an assistant football coach and recreation director. From 1984-1988 Jeffries was also the women’s basketball coach at Laurier. In 1989 he took a break from football and coached the men’s basketball team until 1996. In 1994 Rick Zmich convinced Jeffries to return to the game which he loves so much. Gary has coached 34 football seasons at Laurier, with 19 as Defensive Coordinator. He was named the interim head coach midway through the 2002 season as a result of a labour

dispute and was named the full time manager of football operations and head coach in 2003. He has coached in 19 Yates Cups including championship victories in the 1978, 1987, 2004 and 2005 seasons. Since taking over at the helm of the Hawks, the team has gone 62-20-0 including victories in two Yates Cups (2004, 2005), one Uteck Bowl (2005), and one Vanier Cup (2005). He has also taken home OUA Coach of the Year honours on four separate occassions, most recently in 2009, and was named CIS Coach of the Year in his first full year as head coach in 2003. Coach Jeffries has coached over 700 games in total for the university (both football and basketball), and his passion for Wilfrid Laurier sport remains undying. Gary’s unconditional support group includes his girlfriend Gillian, children, Jonathan, Jodie, Jaime, Ryan and six beautiful grandchildren.

RYA N P Y E A R Ryan Pyear enters his sixth season as the Golden Hawk Offensive Coordinator after five outstanding years as Laurier’s starting quarterback. Some of Ryan’s playing accolades include being named as the OUA Rookie of the Year in 2001 after taking every single snap as a freshman. In 2004 Ryan was named as a first-team OUA all-star and second-team all-Canadian, and in 2005 he reached both first-team all-conference and first-team all-Canadian status. That same year he was awarded Uteck Bowl and Vanier Cup MVP on the way to Wilfrid Laurier’s national supremacy on the gridiron. Other awards include backto-back President’s Awards as Wilfrid Laurier’s top male athlete in 2004 and 2005.

Ryan graduated in June 2006, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Kinesiology. He has two brothers, Kyle and Tobin, who also played five years in the OUA and CIS at McMaster and Waterloo respectively. His mother, Betty, and father Barry, currently live in Ryan’s home town of Belleville, Ontario. Barry Pyear is also a former football coach at Laurier.

Ron Vanmoerkerke is in his thirteenth year coaching with the Golden Hawks. He returns again to the role of Defensive Coordinator, a position he has held since the 2003 season. Ron’s track record with Laurier is a long and storied one; he played in the late 80s and was on the 1987 Yates Cup championship team. In 1988, Ron received the WLU Alumni Association Academic and Athletic Achievement Award. In 1989, Ron was named an OUA first-team all-star linebacker and team MVP. At present, Ron is a teacher
and the Department Head of Social Science at Eastwood Collegiate High School in Kitchener. Prior to becoming the Defensive Coordinator with the Hawks, Ron was the Head Coach at Eastwood and Galt Collegiate. Ron lives with his wife Karen and their daughter Grace and son Austin in West Montrose.
J osh A lexander Alexander began his coaching career in the city leagues at age fifteen and won an OVFL Jr. Championship with the Twin City Predators in 2001, where he was the Defensive Coordinator. He played for the Golden Hawks from 1999 to 2003, and in this time was an all-star defensive lineman and Russ Jackson Award winner. After graduating, Alexander accepted a position as a graduate assistant coach at Mississippi College in Jackson, MS, where he was the offensive line and tight ends coach. During this time, he attended Mississippi College where he obtained his Masters in Business Education. After a low scoring first quarter that saw the Hawks pick up their point on a wide field goal and Western earning their three on a 24-yard field goal, the Mustangs exploded with 25 points in the second tiring out and capitalizing on the Golden Hawk defence.

Mitchell Bosch (Langley, BC) and Samuel Aird (Ancaster, Ont.) led the team in tackles with nine and Bosch also picked up a sack on Marshall. “It’s definitely not how we wanted to start the year,” said Bosch. “There are definitely pointers we can change and get better from and that’s what we’ve got to take away from it.”
The loss is the worst the team has seen against their rival the Stangs in the history of the program. Only twice has the team scored less against the purple-and-white, in 1982 and 1973 when the team was shutout.
Western quarterback Donnie Marshall exploded for a strong rookie performance. The son of head coach Greg Marshall led his team with 183 yards in the air on 12 completions while also adding 65 on the ground and only being intercepted once by Hawk Giancarlo Rapanaro (Niagara Falls, Ont.).
“We’re a better team then the score shows up there today,” commented manager of football operations and head coach Gary Jeffries post game to his team in the huddle. “They flat out beat us today, we made too many errors and too many mental mistakes and they won all three phases of the game. They deserved to win. We’re a lot better than that.”
“We expected to be on the field a lot,” said Rapanaro referring to the fact that the offence was on the field for just over 24-minutes of the game. “The offence usually takes a little longer to get going at the beginning of the season.” The second half saw the Mustangs add two more touchdowns including one off of an interception as well as a field goal and a single. Golden Hawk rookie pivot Shane Kelly (Basking Ridge, N.J.) finished the game completing 7 of 18 for 64 yards before Evan Pawliuk (Kingston, Ont.) stepped in and went 2 for 7. Anton Bennett (Toronto, Ont.) led the team on the ground with 79 yards on 15 touches. Overall the Hawks netted 85 yards, while Western picked up 208. Laurier next travels to Hamilton to face the McMaster Marauders on Labour Day for a 1:00 p.m. start. The team then plays their first home game on September 11th at 7:00 p.m. against the University of Toronto Varsity Blues. The win for the Marauders is the first against the Hawks since November 8th, 2003 when Laurier fell in the Yates Cup 41-17 at Ivor Wynne Stadium.
HAMILTON, Ont. - The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks saw their 22-point lead slip away as the McMaster Marauders (2-0) scored 26 points in the second half beating Laurier (0-2) 26-24 in front of 5,630 fans at Ron Joyce Stadium.
The Golden Hawk defence had a solid first half only allowing 65 yards on 30 plays while the offence was able to capitalize with 211 on 31 plays. As the game progressed, the Marauders were able to adjust putting up 329 yards of offence to Laurier’s 146. The majority of those yards came from Marauder pivot Kyle Quinlan who passed for 264 yards in the second half.
Running back Anton Bennett (Toronto, Ont.) had an opportunity to put the Hawks ahead with only 25-seconds left in the game but fumbled the ball attempting to cross the goal line. The sophomore carried 16 times for 53 yards throughout the day as the team’s leading rusher.
“They made a couple adjustments at half and they took us out of our Blitz package which played a big part in their success in the second,” said Hawks defensive back Giancarlo Rapanaro (Niagara Falls, Ont.) who picked up a fumble from Quinlan and ran it 60 yards into the endzone for the second purple-and-gold touchdown. “We played real well, with some exceptions. There are still things we need to fix, we’re not perfect yet, but we’ll get there.”

The Golden Hawks Shamawd Chambers (Markham, Ont.) got the home team on the board early in the first quarter with a 14-yard receiving touchdown from Shane Kelly (Basking Ridge, N.J.). It was also Kelly’s first passing OUA football major.

The Hawks defence was led by Mitchell Bosch, who had 5.5 tackles (4 solo, 3 assisted). The team also had a strong showing from Shane Burns (Burlington, Ont.) who had a three knockdowns, while Giancarlo Rapanaro (Niagara Falls, Ont.) picked up his seventh career interception and the second of the season.
The Golden Hawks got on the scoreboard early and often against the Lions with starting quarterback Evan Pawliuk (Kingston, Ont.) hitting a wide open Mark Surya (Burlington, Ont.) for a 42 yard major. Surya had his best game for Laurier picking up 66 yards on three receptions.
For the Lions, Patrick Russel (Brampton, Ont.) and Chris Burnett (Brampton, Ont.) were second and third in tackles with eight and seven respectively. Michael Boyd contributed 3.5 tackles as well as a 24 yard interception return.
The purple and gold continued to roll from there with a blocked kick and recovery by Mitchell Bosch (Langley, B.C.) for the Hawks second major of the match. Dillon Heap concluded the first quarter with a 22 yard touchdown reception to give the home team a 26-0 lead.

WATERLOO, Ont. - The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks (3-2) defeated the No. 10 nationally ranked Guelph Gryphons (3-2) 36-2 in front of 7396 homecoming fans.
Guelph struggled on offence in the first half, picking up only one first down. They got rolling in the second, picking up 10 more firsts’, but the Golden Hawks kept the Gryphons playing on a long field.
“That was definitely our best effort,” said head coach Gary Jeffries.”We practiced hard this week, and when you do that, the games aren’t as hard.”
Both teams traded safeties in the second half.
The Hawks dominated the Gryphons early, scoring on their first four drives of the game. Just two minutes into the match Evan Pawliuk (Kingston, Ont.) connected with Dillon Heap (Waterloo, Ont.) on a five yard reception to make it 7-0. Nathan Hawkes (Kitchener, Ont.) would score 32 and 35-yard field goals on the next two drives, while Pawliuk would keep it for a 4-yard run
OUA leading rusher Nick Fitzgibbon (Puslinch, Ont.) was held to just 53 yards on 18 attempts. The Gryphons also started Luke Nangle at quarterback. The London, Ont. native went 11-29 for 170 yards. Laurier’s Dillon Heap had a strong showing with nine receptions for 110 yards. Starting quarterback Evan Pawliuk went 13-17 for 151 yards and a long of 28. Anton Bennett was the Hawks leading rusher with 75 yards on 16 carries. On defence linebacker Mitchell Bosch (Langley, B.C.) led the way with 6.5 (5 solo, 3 assisted) tackles and a sack. OTTAWA - The no. six nationally ranked University of Ottawa Gee Gee’s (6-1) downed the no. 10 Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks (3-3) 44-21 in front of 1,296 fans at Frank Clair Stadium.
“In the first half I’ve never been apart of a better defensive football game,” said Patrick McGarry (Waterdown, Ont.) who had two big knockdowns as well as a fumble recovery and three tackles. “I thought we did a great job but sometimes things go a little sour and you just need to bounce back.”
Quarterback Brad Sinopoli led the garnet-and-grey to 524 yards of offence through his 18 completions for 309 yards and three majors. The veteran quarterback closed in on the national record of 3,033 passing yards in a season set last year by Michael Faulds as he brought his total up to 2,552.
Dillon Heap (Waterloo, Ont.) claimed top spot in the Laurier record books for kick returns in a career. The veteran returner added 86 yards on four carries to bring his overall total to 731.
The Golden Hawks opened scoring in the game after Daniel Bishop (Mississauga, Ont.) forced a fumble on Sinopoli and starting quarterback Evan Pawliuk (Kingston, Ont.) rushed twice before Isaac Dell (Niagara Falls, Ont.) picked up his second touchdown of the year.

Laurier quarterback Shane Kelly of Basking Ridge, N.J. led the offence throwing for 253 yards and going 20-30 and three TD’s. His favourite target was all-Canadian receiver Dustin Zender of Waterloo, Ont. who scored touchdowns on both his receptions. Alex Anthony of Victoria, B.C. picked up the other score through the air and led the Hawks in receiving with 65 yards.
Late in the match the Gaels’ Ryan Granberg of Sherwood Park, Alta. picked up 107 rushing yards to lead all players on the ground. At pivot position, Queen’s struggled with both Justin Chapdelaine of Abbotsford, Ont. and Billy McPhee of Burlington, Ont. seeing the field. The former went 9-for-16 with two interceptions, while the latter was 3-for-10 and one pick.
“We’ve got a lot of good athletes here,” said manager of football operations and head coach Gary Jeffries. “When we step up and our kids play to their ability, we can put these things away.”

Laurier’s special teams had a strong outing, giving the purple and gold excellent field position in the second quarter. They created two of the three turnovers that led directly to majors. The Gaels fumbled on a punt return, and after a penalty, left the Hawks at the 1-yard line. Isaac Dell of Niagara Falls, Ont. punched in his first of two, to get the ball rolling.

With one game remaining on the schedule the Hawks are still in the hunt for a home playoff date. The top three spots in the OUA have been locked up by Ottawa, Western and McMaster with the order depending on the final game. For Laurier to host a quarter-final match-up, the Hawks would have to defeat Windsor and Guelph would have to lose to Ottawa. Laurier can also still miss the playoffs, if they lose to Windsor.

The rookie pivot was sacked four times including by Stephen Cormack (Waterloo, Ont.) who finishes the season with 4.5. Safety Mitch Nicholson (Grand Haven, Mi.) picked up the only interception in the game for Laurier which puts him in top spot for the year.
WINDSOR, Ont. - The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks (4-4) claimed a home playoff game as a result of Saturday afternoon’s 56-16 win over the Windsor Lancers (2-6) in week nine of Ontario University Athletics action. The result, coupled with Guelph’s loss to Ottawa puts the Hawks in fourth place in the standings where they will host the Gryphons at University Stadium on October 30th at 1:00 p.m.
Kicker Nathan Hawkes (Kitchener, Ont.) added a field goal and became the team’s single-season record holder for kickoff yardage. He finished with 2,513 yards.
“Coming down here hasn’t been easy but today our kids played outstanding in all three phases,” commented manager of football operations and head coach Gary Jeffries on the fact that the team hasn’t won in Windsor since the 49-0 rout in 1999. “I’m really proud of them today.”

Chris Rossetti of Mississauga, Ont. was in the game for about three drives before being tackled on a rush and injuring his knee. Backup quarterback Luke Nangle of London, Ont. was taken down on an interception return at the end of the first half leaving the pivot position vacant. Pawliuk completed to a variety of receivers including Dillon Heap of Waterloo, Ont. and Alex Anthony of Victoria, B.C. who each caught six passes for 76 and 69 yards respectively.
The win advances the Gee-Gees to the Yates Cup while Laurier’s year ends for the second year in a row in the semifinals.
“We just couldn’t come together in the end and get what we needed to do,” commented Pawliuk post-game. “I was a bit nervous at first but as soon as I got out there it was what every football player dreams of, you can’t ask for anything better then a game like this and sometimes in the end it doesn’t work out for you.”
Sinopoli played a solid game leading the garnet-and-grey to 412 yards of offence including several big plays on route to his 315-passing yard performance. In what was one of the most exciting contests of the season, the Hawks and Gee-Gees swapped touchdowns several times both with significant drives but the game came down to the final minutes. “The kids made plays back and forth and we just ran out of time today,” commented manager of football operations and head coach Gary Jeffries. “I just have the utmost respect for our football team at how resilient they are and the stuff they’ve gone through this year battling to the last seconds of the clock.”
The Hawks were behind at the end of the first 14-7, but then outscored Ottawa 17-2 in the second with two majors from Kelly to Jeff Emberley (Oakville, Ont.) and Anton Bennett (Toronto, Ont.). Linebacker and place kicker Giancarlo Rapanaro of Niagara Falls, Ont. hit a 36-yard field goal after recovering his own punt before the team conceded a safety to end the half. The third quarter saw a pair of touchdowns swapped and the fourth is when Ottawa scored a touchdown and then Gee-Gee Matthew Falvo hit the 31-yard field goal, which ended up as the game winning points.
Laurier had two chances to go ahead in the final minute of the game but quarterback Evan Pawliuk of Kingston, Ont. couldn’t get the completions the team needed to put them in field goal range.
Veteran lineman Stephen Cormack of Waterloo, Ont., who had six tackles as well as two sacks in the contest, led Laurier’s defence. Defensive back Scott McCahill of Kingston, Ont. had some key plays including a late interception. “We said all week we were going to down swinging and we brought as much pressure as we could,” said Cormack, when asked about the game. “That’s all you can really ask for, is the effort we had.” Laurier has had trouble in the nation’s capital before. The team is 2-2 over the last four contests including the 44-21 loss earlier this season. The game is the final one for several veterans including Cormack, Emberley, Rapanaro as well as Vince Lunciani of Oakville.

The Mitchell Bowl was first awarded in 2002, replacing the Atlantic Bowl, after the CIS voted in 2001 to change the permanent site of the Atlantic Bowl in the interest of competitive fairness. During that year, the Mitchell Bowl played opposite to that of the Churchill Bowl. However, with the introduction of the Uteck Bowl in 2003, the Mitchell Bowl replaced and assumed the history of the Churchill Bowl.

St. Francis Xavier quarterback Terry Dolan marshalled a 40-14 victory over Waterloo Lutheran (now Wilfrid Laurier) in the second and final invitational Vanier Cup Game. Dolan completed 12 out of 19 passes for 4 touchdowns and 284 yards. Receiver Terry Gorman caught 6 of them for 131 yards and 3 TDs, setting a Vanier Cup record and earning the Ted Morris Trophy. 1968
Queen’s 42 Waterloo Lutheran 14
Queen’s rambled to a 42-14 romp over Waterloo Lutheran, utilizing powerful aerial and ground attacks. On the ground it was Keith Eaman running for 93 yards and 2 TDs and Don McIntyre was on the receiving end of two of three Don Bayne TD passes. Bayne finished the game with 250 yards passing and was selected MVP. 1972

The Cup went West again as Alberta defeated Waterloo Lutheran 20-7. The Golden Bears used three quarterbacks to secure the win with appearances by Gary Weisbrot, Terry Cairnes and Roy Beechey. Waterloo Lutheran’s Gerry Blacker scored a touchdown and rushed for 134 yards in a solid performance as the Golden Hawks suffered their third Vanier Cup loss.
The Hawks won their first Vanier Cup in 1991. They beat Mt. Allison by a score of 25-18 to give them the title of National Champions.

The Laurier Golden Hawks took home the Vanier Cup for the first time with a 25-18 victory over the Mount Allison Mounties before more than 30,000 fans at the SkyDome. Laurier running back Andy Cecchini carried 22 times for 130 yards and tied a Vanier Cup record with three touchdowns. The Golden Hawks, OUA and Churchill Bowl champions, jumped out to an early 11-0 lead in the first quarter as Cecchini ran one yard for his first touchdown. Laurier took a large lead in the third quarter on a two-yard run by Cecchini and a 19-yard pass from QB Bill Kubas to Cecchini to make the score 24-4. The Mounties, however, staged a spirited comeback as Grant Keaney ran 27 yards for a touchdown and slotback Mark Huys caught a 33-yard touchdown pass from Sean Hickey. The Laurier defense tightened up late in the game and preserved the victory. Cecchini won the Ted Morris Trophy as the game’s outstanding player. 2005

With just 19 seconds left on the clock, Brian Devlin connected on a 32-yard field goal, giving the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks a 24-23 win over the Saskatchewan Huskies and their second ever National Title. The game was played in front of 16,827 fans at Ivor Wynne Stadium in Hamilton. The majority of the raucous crowd clad in Purple and Gold. Golden Hawks supporters didn’t leave disappointed, as the Hawks became only the 10th team in Canadian University history to finish a season undefeated (12-0). Quarterback Ryan Pyear took home the Ted Morris Trophy as the game’s MVP; finishing 20 for 30 for 254 yards and 3 touchdowns.

The University Stadium which seats 6500 people is the home to many Golden Hawk Varsity Teams.
Laurier is in top spot among Ontario’s universities in the Primarily Undergraduate category of the Maclean’s Annual Rankings of Universities, and is second overall in the country in the reputational ranking. Laurier finished fifth overall in the Primarily Undergraduate category, up two spots from last year’s seventh place ranking. The university is Ontario’s top performer in key student-related categories such as Average Entering Grade and Proportion of Students with (entering averages of ) 75% or higher. Laurier also improved in Student Services as a Percentage of Budget, and retained its second place finish overall in Scholarships and Bursaries.
Laurier is known across the country as an institution with high quality students and professors, and a community environment that fosters academic and personal growth. We consistently come out strong in reputational surveys such as Maclean’s Annual Rankings of Universities and the Globe and Mail Rankings.
The university had its best-ever showing in reputation, finishing second overall in the country. In the individual reputational categories, Laurier finished third in Highest Quality, third in Most Innovative, third in Leaders of Tomorrow, and second in Best Overall.
The John Aird Center, which acts as the main entrance to the campus, was built in 1988. Visit the Robert Langen Art Gallery for a touch of art and stop by the Maureen Forrester Recital Hall to hear the internationally renowned Penderecki String Quartet.

HISTORY OF WILFRID LAURIER UNIVERSITY In 1910 the Canada Synod and Synod of Central Canada of the Lutheran Church entered into an agreement to establish a Lutheran Seminary. Though the location first proposed for the Seminary was Toronto, Waterloo was selected when its citizens offered a tract of land on the boundary of the town. The choice of location was affected, too, by the fact that the majority of Lutherans in Ontario lived in the vicinity of Waterloo and Berlin (Kitchener). In 1911 the Evangelical Lutheran Seminary of Canada opened its doors. Facilities for pre-theological education were established in 1914 with courses leading to senior matriculation given in Waterloo College School. In 1924 the Waterloo College of Arts, providing courses in post-secondary education in a four year program, was established. In 1925 the Faculty of Arts, under the name of Waterloo College, affiliated with the University of Western Ontario. Waterloo College soon began to offer Honours degree programs in the arts. The affiliation with the University of Western Ontario ended in 1960 when the Seminary obtained a revised charter changing the name of the institution to Waterloo Lutheran University. On November 1, 1973, Waterloo Lutheran University became Wilfrid Laurier University, one of Ontario’s provincially assisted universities after Bill 178 was given Royal Assent by the Lieutenant Governor, former Wilfrid Laurier University Chancellor William Ross Macdonald.
