2011 Season in Review The 2011 season has been all about redemption for the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks. After losing a heartbreaking CIS Championship final in 2010, the Hawks had one goal in their mind entering the year: win a national championship. Spurred on by their desire to claim what they lost a year ago, Laurier roared out of the gates to open the season. In their opening weekend of play, the purple and gold outscored their opponents by a 7-1 margin, largely thanks to some inspired soccer from midfielder Alyssa Lagonia, who was fresh off helping Canada earn a fifth place finish at the 2011 FISU Summer Games. Lagonia finished the opening weekend with three goals and three assists to help the Hawks get off to a fantastic start. Laurier carried that momentum through their next eight games as they rattled off a team-record 10 straight wins to open their season. The streak included impressive victories over the McMaster Marauders (6-1), the Waterloo Warriors (4-1) and the Guelph Gryphons (4-0). During the winning streak, the Hawks became the top-ranked team in the CIS and held onto the ranking for five consecutive weeks. However, the Hawks streak would eventually end and it came in stunning fashion as Laurier dropped a 1-0 decision in less-than-ideal conditions to the Waterloo Warriors. The very next day, the purple and gold would then drop their second straight game, this time a 2-1 result to the Windsor Lancers. Suddenly, Laurier found themselves ranked fifth in the country and facing adversity for the first time this season. But this veteran team would not be deterred. Facing a tough game on the road against the York Lions, the Hawks proved themselves once again as they came out and knocked off the Lions 1-0. The team finished off the season with another big victory over McMaster, their 12th of the season which established a new team record for most wins in a season. Laurier also set a new mark for most goals scored in a season with 36, thanks in large part to the one-two punch of Krista Cellucci and Emily Brown up front. Cellucci, who started off her career at York, led the team with 10 goals while Brown, a rookie who attended high school just down the road from Wilfrid Laurier University, had nine goals. With the Hawks having wrapped up first place in the OUA West, the team received a bye through the opening round of the playoffs. Their first playoff opponent would be the Lions, the same opponent they opened their regular season against. In what Coach Barry MacLean described as one of the team’s best performances of the year, the Hawks kept York in check and thanks to a goal from Heather Malizia, the team advanced to their second straight OUA Final Four appearance. In the OUA Semifinals, with a chance to punch their ticket to the national championship, the Hawks played the Ottawa GeeGees, the highest scoring team in the country. However, the story of the day became the how the veteran midfield and defence of the purple and gold was able to shut down the speedy Gee-Gees and Brown scored the game’s lone goal to help the Hawks reach the OUA Championship. In what can only be described as appropriate, Laurier would once again face their rivals, the Queen’s Gaels, for OUA supremacy. In a well played match by both teams, the Hawks and Gaels would put zeros up on the board through 120 minutes, leaving the outcome to be determined by penalty kicks. After Lagonia was stopped by the Queen’s keeper, the Gaels would not miss as they ended the Hawks chances of becoming the first team to repeat as provincial champions in over 10 years.

Golden Hawks Staff Barry MacLean - Head Coach MacLean, who has previously coached both the men's and women's soccer teams, was an AllCanadian for the Golden Hawks men's soccer team in 1985. A former assistant coach to the National Under-20 men's team, Barry returned to Laurier to serve as the assistant coach for the women's soccer team beginning in 1992, when they captured their first National Championship. In 1995, MacLean took over as head coach for the women's team and directed them to their second National Championship title. In 1998, MacLean assumed the role of head coach of both the men's and women's teams, and in 1999, Barry's accomplishments at Laurier were recognized with his induction into the Golden Hawk Hall of Fame. In the 2000 & 2001 seasons, Barry coached the men's soccer team to back-to-back national titles.
Niki Budalic - Assistant Coach This is the third year that Budalic has been the assistant coach for the Golden Hawk Women’s Soccer team. A transfer student from NCAA division one power James Madison, Budalic came to Laurier and instantly became the top goal scorer. His powerful shot helped the Golden Hawks win the 2001 CIS Championship. Budalic was also named an OUA First Team All-Star in 2001 and 2002. In 2008, Laurier recognized this soccer veteran and inducted him into the Golden Hawk Hall of Fame. His creativity that was instrumental in leading the WLU attack in the early 2000s is now governed towards assisting his former head coach lead the Lady Hawks to victory.
ERIN GRAND - Assistant Coach Grand is in her first season as an assistant coach with the Golden Hawks. A former member of the Western Mustangs, Grand was a three-time OUA All-Star while at Western and a two-time recipient of the Mustangs Golden Boot award after scoring 16 goals in her career. She currently holds her National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) Level 1 as well as a National Soccer Coaches of America Association (NSCAA) National Diploma.

HISTORY OF WILFRID LAURIER UNIVERSITY In 1910 the Canada Synod and Synod of Central Canada of the Lutheran Church entered into an agreement to establish a Lutheran Seminary. Though the location first proposed for the Seminary was Toronto, Waterloo was selected when its citizens offered a tract of land on the boundary of the town. The choice of location was affected, too, by the fact that the majority of Lutherans in Ontario lived in the vicinity of Waterloo and Berlin (Kitchener). In 1911 the Evangelical Lutheran Seminary of Canada opened its doors. Facilities for pre-theological education were established in 1914 with courses leading to senior matriculation given in Waterloo College School. In 1924 the Waterloo College of Arts, providing courses in post-secondary education in a four year program, was established. In 1925 the Faculty of Arts, under the name of Waterloo College, affiliated with the University of Western Ontario. Waterloo College soon began to offer Honours degree programs in the arts. The affiliation with the University of Western Ontario ended in 1960 when the Seminary obtained a revised charter changing the name of the institution to Waterloo Lutheran University. On November 1, 1973, Waterloo Lutheran University became Wilfrid Laurier University, one of Ontario’s provincially assisted universities after Bill 178 was given Royal Assent by the Lieutenant Governor, former Wilfrid Laurier University Chancellor William Ross Macdonald.
