OUTLOOK

Sept. 29 vs Guelph - 1 p.m.

Sept. 3 @ Toronto - 1 p.m. Head Coach: Greg Gary 2011 Record: 3-5 (7th OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs. Toronto: 28-13-0 Current Streak: Toronto 1 win Outlook for 2012: The Toronto Varsity Blues were reborn under first year coach Greg Gary last season. After a 3-5 campaign which saw the team just miss the playoffs, the future looks bright for the Blues. Richard Quittenton takes over the QB duties from Andrew Gillis with receivers Alex Pierzchalski and Paul de Pass being key targets on offence. On defence, look for defensive backs Kevin Kinahan and Jaiden McBride to step into larger roles while James Bodanis and Abbey Olusoga will anchor the defensive line. Quote from Head Coach: “The coaching staff has worked really hard this summer to bring in a lot of key guys and fill the gaps. We have a solid group of returners that will provide the necessary leadership to a large group of incoming recruits.”

Head Coach: Stu Lang 2011 Record: 2-6 (8th OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs. Guelph: 41-13-0 Current Streak: Laurier 5 wins Outlook for 2012: After earning an ‘A’ ranking from Canada Football Chat on their 2012 recruiting class, the Guelph Gryphons are seen as an up-andcoming team in the league this year. The team returns 19 starters from a year ago, with 10 on offence and nine of defence. On the offensive side of the ball, QB Jazz Lindsey is the incumbent starter after earning the starting role midway through last season. He will be complemented by REC Dillon Dimitroff and Saxon Lindsey. On defence, LB Jake Reinhart and John Rush will be relied upon heavily while DL Cam Thorn provides size on the line. Quote from Head Coach: “We are very excited about the upcoming season. With the new turf at Alumni Stadium, renewed staff and an excellent recruiting year there is more excitement and buzz around this program than ever. We have a very talented freshman class for 2012. This group combined with the 2011 class will make the Gryphons one of the youngest and most competitive teams in the league.”

Sept. 8 vs Queen’s - 8 p.m.

Oct. 4 vs Waterloo - 7 p.m.

Head Coach: Pat Sheahan 2011 Record: 6-2 (3rd OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs. Queen’s: 7-8-0 Current Streak: Queen’s 2 wins Outlook for 2012: After losing out to the McMaster Marauders in the semifinals last season, expectations are high for the Queen’s Gaels in 2012. 20 starters return from last year’s squad and along with a highly-ranked recruiting class, the Gaels are poised to take a run at the Yates Cup. Leading the way offensively for Queen’s will be third year QB Billy McPhee along with the nation’s leading rusher from a year ago in Ryan Granberg. Also keep an eye on REC Justin Chapdelaine and Giovanni Aprile. On defence, LB Sam Sabourin once again anchors the group while DL John Miniaci and Derek Wiggan will again prove to be a force for opposing offensive lines to handle. Quote from Head Coach: “I think it’s going to be another competitive year. We have a good returning nucleus and we had a good recruiting class and we’ve got some great kids in the program right now. Our expectations are cautiously optimistic, but the guys have to deliver.”

Head Coach: Joe Paopao 2011 Record: 0-8 (10th OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs. Waterloo: 36-14-1 Current Streak: Laurier 8 wins Outlook for 2012: After a tough 2011 campaign following the program’s one year suspension, the Warriors have a brand new look as Joe Paopao takes over from the head coaching reins from Dennis McPhee. Waterloo returns eight starters on both sides of the football but will be without offensive leaders Evan Martin (QB), Luke Balch (QB) and Dustin Zender (REC) who have all moved on from the program after graduation. With one year experience under the belt of many of their young players from last season, expect Waterloo to be competitive in every one of their games. Quote from Head Coach: “Our men have prepared with a tremendous approach and very strong vision. They know the road ahead of them will not be easy but have embraced this challenge. I have full confidence in our staff and student-athletes that 2012 will bring tremendous growth to our program and build a direction towards our ultimate goal, a championship program.”

Sept. 15 vs York - 1 p.m.

Oct. 13 @ Western - 1 p.m.

Head Coach: Warren Craney 2011 Record: 1-7 (9th OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs. York: 34-5-0 Current Streak: Laurier 8 wins Outlook for 2012: Thanks to their victory over Waterloo last season, the York Lions avoided a basement finish in the OUA for the first time in three years. Looking to build on that in 2012, a lot of talk around the Lions coming into this year is the addition of former NCAA QB Myles Gibbon. Pairing him with returing RB Ryan Rowe and REC Nathaniel Griffith and Devante Hobbs should give York a formidable offence. On defence, eight starters return led by DB’s Andrew Collymore, Patrick Russell and Jordan Nugent. Quote from Head Coach: “We are a much better team this season than we were last year. In 2011 we were very young, with 18 rookies in the starting line-up after our first major recruiting class. We have another major recruiting class this year but, overall, the team is more experienced. Getting our first win was huge for our program because it took the monkey off of everyone’s back. Having those players taste victory has made them hungrier for more this year.”

Head Coach: Greg Marshall 2011 Record: 7-1 (T-1st OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs. Western: 21-42-0 Current Streak: Western 6 wins Outlook for 2012: After losing in the Yates Cup final to McMaster, the Mustangs have reloaded and look to once again contend for top spot in the conference. Offensively, the pressure will be on fifth year QB Donnie Marshall as CIS Rookie of the Year running back Tyler Varga departed the team for the NCAA. Marshall will look to receivers Brian Marshall and Andrew Thibideau to be his main targets. Defensively, Western is led by All-Canadian Beau Landry along with OUA All-Star Mike Spence as well as DB Jamie Symianick Quote from Head Coach: “We’re optimistic [about 2012], we’ve got a good group of returning players with quality and depth. We lost some good players to the CFL, but it’s a good news, bad news situation. It’s good for them to move on a do what they want to do. We’ve got the depth with our returning players and recruits to fill in the gaps.”

Oct. 20 @ McMaster - 1 p.m.

Sept. 22 @ Ottawa - 1 p.m.

Head Coach: Gary Etcheverry 2011 Record: 5-3 (T-4th OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs Ottawa: 11-14-1 Current Streak: Laurier 1 win Outlook for 2012: The 2012 Gee-Gees return almost the entire lineup from the 2011 squad which posted a 5-3 regular season before being upset in the first round of the OUA playoffs. A close-knit group of players and coaches know that the base has been built to return the team to the top of the playoff heap. Veteran CFL coach Gary Etcheverry takes over the reins on the sidelines, bringing a new perspective on how to get the most out of the players. Quote from Head Coach: “We’re looking forward to building on what was begun here last year defensively and there’s certainly a lot of room for improvement but I was really pleased with the starting point for the style of defence. Offensively, we’ve got some real weapons; we aim to score early and often – and fast. We think we have the ability not only within our plays and schemes but we have the ability within our players to do that, marrying our players to the scheme.”

Head Coach: Stefan Ptaszek 2011 Record: 7-1 (T-1st OUA) Laurier All-Time Record vs. McMaster: 39-14-1 Current Streak: McMaster 2 wins Outlook for 2012: Fresh off their thrilling Vanier Cup championship, the McMaster Marauders are poised to take another run at Canadian university supremacy. Armed with a number of returning players, the Marauders are many pundits early season picks to repeat as Yates Cup champions and even possibly repeat as Vanier Cup champions, something that hasn’t happened since Laval took home back-to-back titles in 2003 and 2004. Leading McMaster’s offence once again this year will be fifth year QB Kyle Quinlan and he will have many of his favourite targets back, including REC Michael DiCroce and Brad Fochesate along with RB Chris Pezzetta. On defence, three fifth year LB, Trevor Gary, Shane Beaton and Daniel Baronas, will be pivotal for the Marauders. Also keep on eye on DB Joey Cupido and DL Tanvir Bhangoo.

With the score 15-7 late in the third quarter, Kelly connected with Anton Bennett of Toronto, for two big gains, setting up an eight yard touchdown by Russ Jirgens of Burlington, Ont.

“Strong second half propels Hawks past Lions” “Chambers has big game for Laurier with 137 yards and 1 TD” by Jamie Howieson

Two possessions later, after a 27 yard field goal from Ronald Pfeffer of Kitchener, Ont., made the score 25-7, Carlos Naranjo of Whitby, Ont., recovered a fumble. On the very next play, Kelly hooked up with Chambers, who beat a couple of defenders before running untouched to the endzone for a 45 yard score.

TORONTO (September 5, 2011)- The No. 10 Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks football team (1-0) exploded for 31 fourth quarter points as they downed the York Lions (0-1) 46-7 on Monday afternoon at York Stadium.

Just over a minute later, Mitchell Bosch of Langley, B.C., stripped York quarterback Nick Coutu of St. Catharines, Ont., picked up the loose ball and rumbled 30 yards for the touchdown.

Quarterback Shane Kelly of Basking Ridge, N.J., had a solid game for the Hawks, completing 26 of his 43 pass attempts for 339 yards and three touchdowns. His favourite target throughout the afternoon was receiver Shamawd Chambers of Markham, Ont., who had seven receptions for 137 yards and a touchdown.

With the game in hand, rookie Dillon Campbell of Whitby, Ont., playing in his first CIS game, finished off the scoring, running in from 13 yards out for his first career touchdown. Bennett finished the game as the Hawks leading rusher, picking up 52 yards on nine attempts. He also had three receptions for 48 yards.

Despite the lopsided scoreline, the result was very much in doubt until the fourth quarter when the Hawks found their passing game and the teams defence stepped up with two key fumble recoveries.

Pfeffer, also playing in his first career CIS game, was a perfect two for two on field goal attempts as he connected from 25 yards as time expired in the opening half. As for the Lions, Coutu finished the game 15 of 37 for 126 yards. He was also Yorks most dangerous runner, picking up 25 yards on the ground on five attempts. Kicker Heneri Dervishi of Toronto, accounted for six of Yorks points as he was two for two on field goal attempts. Punter Dror David of Richmond Hill, Ont., earned the Lions other point on a single conceded after a deep punt into the endzone in the third quarter. Next up for the Golden Hawks, they will host the Windsor Lancers in their home opener this Saturday at University Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

NOTES: Dillon Heap of Waterloo, Ont., recorded the Hawks first major of the season, pulling in a 35 yard pass from Kelly two minutes into the game...rookie receiver Kelvin Muamba recorded his first career reception in the third quarter...Bosch led the defensive effort for the Hawks, recording 5.5 total tackles to go along with his fumble recovery and touchdown...attendance at the game was 4,300, including a strong contingent of Hawks

The third quarter saw the two teams traded a pair of touchdowns, setting up a wild fourth quarter.

“Lancers shock No. 8 Golden Hawks” “Bennett rushes for 132 yards in the loss” by Jamie Howieson

Kennedy connected with Evan Pszczonak of Amherstburg, Ont., followed by a Cercino 24 yard field goal and a Laurier conceded safety. The Golden Hawks answered back when Kelly found Mark Surya of Burlington, Ont., in the endzone with less than two minutes to play. But it was Kennedy again engineering a response, driving Windsor down the field in just 48 seconds, eventually finding Cory Fernandes of Mississauga, Ont., in the endzone to tie the game.

WATERLOO, Ont. (September 10, 2011) - In what can only be described as a wild finish, the No. 8 Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks (1-1) lost a shocker to the Windsor Lancers (2-0) 41-40 in their home opener Saturday night at University Stadium. With the game tied at 40 with 28 seconds left on the clock, the Lancers drove down to Laurier’s 20 yard line, setting the stage for the Lancers to win the game. Kicker Dan Cerino of Stoney Creek, Ont., punted the ball to the back of the endzone on the final play of the game in the hopes of scoring a single point. The ball was caught by Golden Hawks receiver Dillon Heap of Waterloo, Ont., and kicked back into play. However, it fell right to Cerino who finished off what he started, kicking the ball through the endzone to hand the Lancers the unlikely victory.

A quick two-and-out by the Hawks set up the fireworks in the final second of the game. For the Hawks, Kelly finished the game 21 of 33 for 242 yards and three touchdowns. Bennett racked up 132 rushing yards in the game. Heap was the top receiver as he had five receptions for 84 yards.

What made the win even more unlikely was the fact that the Hawks led the game 33-22 late in the third quarter following a 92 kickoff return touchdown by Laurier’s Felix Odum, of Pickering, Ont. Instead of backing down however, the Lancers scored 19 fourth quarter points to earn the win.

Lancers receiver Jordan Brescacin of Tecumseh, Ont., was the main beneficiary of Kennedy’s big game, hauling in 10 catches for 193 yards and two touchdowns. Fernandes also topped the 100 yard receiving mark, with 136 yards on five receptions. The Golden Hawks will try to rebound next week in Kingston when they travel to Queen’s to take on the Gaels (0-2). Game time is set for 1:00pm.

Windsor was led by backup quarterback Austin Kennedy of Windsor, Ont., who came into the game in the second quarter after starter Sam Malian of LaSalle, Ont., was forced from the game with an injury. Kennedy finished the game 25 of 37 for 443 yards and five touchdowns while also leading the Lancers in rushing, racking up 112 yards on ground.

NOTES: The loss was the Golden Hawks first to the Lancers since 2006 when they lost 38-29 in Windsor...Odum’s third quarter kickoff return touchdown was the first of his career...at 92 yards, Odum’s return was the fifth longest in team history...Attendance at the game was 5,126

The Golden Hawks started the game well as they found the endzone just five minutes into the contest. Heap, who scored the game’s opening touchdown in Week 1 against York, was left wide open by the Lancers defence and quarterback Shane Kelly of Basking Ridge, N.J., made them pay, connecting with Heap for the 30 yard score. After Windsor conceded a safety, the purple and gold stretched their lead to 16 when Anton Bennett of Toronto, caught a nine yard touchdown pass. The Lancers would add a touchdown and a single of their own to pull within eight points at halftime.

KINGSTON, Ont. (September 17, 2011) - In front of a crowd of over 7,000, the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks dropped to 1-2 on the season with a 58-35 defeat at the hands of the Queen’s Gaels Saturday afternoon at Richardson Stadium.

The Hawks would finally find the scoreboard late in the second quarter as Shane Kelly of Basking Ridge, N.J., connected with Anton Bennett of Toronto, for a three yard touchdown to give Laurier some life heading into the second half.

The Hawks were unable to contain Queen’s Giovanni Aprile of Toronto, who scored four touchdowns on the afternoon, three receiving and one on special teams, and finished the game with 177 yards receiving. Gaels quarterback Billy McPhee of Burlington, Ont., also had his best game in the OUA, finishing the game 16 of 32 for 362 yards and four touchdowns.

However, any hope of a Hawks comeback would be quickly squashed as Queen’s opened the second half with a seven minute drive culminating in another Aprile touchdown. One highlight on the day for Laurier came from defensive back Shane Herbert of Ajax, Ont. Herbert picked up McPhee at the Golden Hawks three yard line and returned it 107 yards for a touchdown late in the third quarter. The interception return was the third longest in team history and just five yards shy of the CIS record.

Queen’s got off to a great start when Craig Rushon of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., punched it in from one yard out just two and a half minutes into the game. McPhee and Aprile would add

Kelly finished the afternoon 30 of 55 for 345 yards and four touchdowns, connecting with Bennett and Mark Surya of Burlington, Ont., who each had two touchdown receptions in the game. The Hawks will try to rebound next week when they return home to face the No. 2 Western Mustangs. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m. at University Stadium.

NOTES: The 58 points allowed is the second most ever allowed by a Golden Hawks team in the schools history...Windsor scored 65 points on Laurier in the 1975 Yates Cup final...Bennett record two touchdowns in a game for the second consecutive week... Kelly now has 10 touchdown passes on the season and with five weeks left in the season, sits 13 behind the all-time record of 23 held by Bill Kubas

Heap, who was easily Laurier’s best player on the day, finished with 176 yards on seven receptions and a touchdown. He added 102 yards and a touchdown on three punt returns and now sits just 15 yards shy of the all-time OUA record for career punt returns yards currently held by Windsor’s Don Hollerhead.

WATERLOO, Ont. (September 24, 2011) - The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks saw their record drop to 1-3 as they fell to the No. 2 Western Mustangs (4-0) by a score of 34-28 on Saturday afternoon at University Stadium.

Kelly, who threw two touchdown passes and now has 12 on the season, was 27 of 48 on the day for 320 yards but was intercepted four times. He has now thrown eight interceptions in his last two games.

Coming off of two tough losses, the Golden Hawks needed a good start and they got it thanks to Dillon Heap of Waterloo, Ont. Just over six minutes into the game, Heap returned a punt 63 yards for a touchdown, his first special teams score of the season.

The Golden Hawks will look to continue their strong play next weekend when they host the Ottawa Gee-Gee’s as a part of Wilfrid Laurier University’s 100th Homecoming celebrations. Game time is set for 1 p.m. and will be broadcast live on theScore.

Before the quarter was out, the Mustangs would respond and tie the game at seven when the Mustang’s Tyler Varga of Kitchener, Ont., ran the ball in from six yards out.

With momentum on their side, Western’s offence continued to roll in the second quarter as Varga punched in another score before Sean Blake of Hamilton, Ont., intercepted Laurier quarterback Shane Kelly of Basking Ridge, N.J., on the Golden Hawks 25 and ran it all the way back for the major. Needing a response before the half, the Hawks got it as the team drove 75 yards on eight plays, capped by a one yard touchdown run from Rashad La Touche of Whitby, Ont. Laurier would get the ball back with 30 seconds on the clock and made the Mustangs pay as a screen pass to Heap got Laurier to Westerns six yard line and from there, Kelly hit Russ Jirgens of Burlington, Ont., in the endzone to tie the game at 21. Despite the swing in momentum, Western came out and controlled the first 17 minutes of the second half. Liriam Hajrullahu of St. Catharines, Ont., kicked a pair of field goals and Varga rushed for another touchdown as the Mustangs opened up a 13 point lead. The Golden Hawks would respond early in the fourth quarter when Kelly connected with Heap for a 52 yard touchdown to set to within six. However, Western’s defence would step up the rest of the way and sealed the victory in the final minute when Sean Blake of Hamilton, Ont., intercepted Kelly to end any hopes of a Laurier comeback.

After a Matt Falvo (Welland, Ont.) field goal cut the deficit to 10, the Hawks drove 75 yards on six plays, capped off by a Kelly one yard touchdown run, late in the half to take a 20-3 lead into the second half.

WATERLOO, Ont. (October 1, 2011) - Receiver Shamawd Chambers of Markham, Ont., caught eight passes for 201 yards and two touchdowns as the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks (2-3) defeated the No. 10 Ottawa Gee-Gees (3-2) 51-16 on Lauriers 100th Homecoming weekend.

Laurier would blow the game wide open in the third quarter as they found the endzone three times. Kelly connected with Chambers for 32 and 58 yard majors and Rashad La Touche of Whitby, Ont., scored on an 18 yard pass to stretch the Hawks lead 32.

Playing in front of a boisterous crowd of 9,262 at University Stadium, the Hawks jumped out to a 13-0 first quarter lead and never looked back en route to snapping their three game losing streak.

A Brendan Gillanders (Orleans, Ont.) touchdown early in the fourth quarter cut into the Hawks lead but backup quarterback Steven Fantham of London, Ont., completed his first career touchdown pass to Kelvin Muamba of Mississauga, Ont., to restore the 32 point advantage. For Muamba, it was his first career touchdown reception as well.

Receiver Dillon Heap of Waterloo, Ont., had a record-setting performance as he became the OUAs all-time punt return yards leader as he returned seven punts for 74 yards to surpass Windsors Don Hollerhead. He broke the record of 1,886 yards in the first quarter on a 27 yard return. Hawks quarterback Shane Kelly of Basking Ridge, N.J., shook off a tough game against Western to finish the contest with four touchdown passes and 348 yards while completing 20 of 34 passes. (October 6, 2011) - Rashad La Touche of Whitby, Ont., and Tyrrel Wilson of Hamilton, each rushed for over 100 yards as the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks (3-3) cruised past the Waterloo Warriors (0-6) by a score of 69-3 on Thursday evening at Warriors Field.

For the Warriors, quarterback Luke Balch of London, Ont., was their top performer on the night as he threw for 182 yards and rushed for an additional 111. With the win, the Hawks moved into a tie in the OUA standings with the Queen’s Gaels and the Ottawa Gee-Gees. All three teams now have three wins but the Gaels and Gee-Gees each have a game in hand as they will play their Week Six matchups on Saturday.

The Golden Hawks will look to improve their winning streak to three games next weekend when they host the McMaster Marauders at University Stadium. Ashton Rochester of Oakville, Ont., playing in his first career CIS football game, chipped in with 78 yards and a touchdown on five carriers to help the Hawks to their highest rushing total of the season, 306 yards. While the Hawks rushing game put in their best performance of the year, the pass game was not hurt as starting quarterback Shane Kelly of Basking Ridge, Ont., continued his run towards the top of the Laurier record books. The fifth year pivot connected on 15 of 23 passes for 303 yards and four touchdowns in three quarters of action. Those numbers were good enough to move him into third place on two single-season records lists at Laurier, passing yards (1,902) and touchdowns (20). Kitchener, Ont., from 30 and 35 yards, gave Laurier the slim 6-3 lead after one quarter of play. McMaster would gain the wind in the second quarter and took advantage as Crapigna hit a pair of field goals in the quarter from 20 and 46 yards to stake the Marauders to a 9-6 halftime lead.

“Marauders hand Hawks third home loss” “No. 6 McMaster wins battle of field position on windy afternoon” by Jamie Howieson

Still with the wind to start the third, the Marauders opened up a 10 points advantage early as on their opening possession of the half, quarterback Kyle Quinlan of South Woodslee, Ont., drove his team downfield and finished the drive with a 15 yard touchdown pass to Michael Dicroce of Hamilton, Ont.

WATERLOO, Ont. (October 15, 2011) - The No. 6 McMaster Marauders (6-1) handed the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks (3-4) their third home loss of the season as they posted a 25-6 victory on a windy afternoon at University Stadium. Playing in winds of 50km/h, both teams looked to the running game to set up field position. McMaster struck first when Tyler Crapigna of Nepean, Ont., hit a 24 yard field goal to give the Marauders an early 3-0 lead.

The Hawks would struggle going into the wind and could not find a way to sustain their drives resulting in the team conceding a safety late in the quarter. Regaining the wind for the fourth, Laurier had their chance to cut into the lead midway through the frame but quarterback Shane Kelly of Basking Ridge, N.J., was intercepted in the endzone by Michael Daly of Kitchener, Ont., to seal the victory.

The Hawks would respond later in the first quarter with the wind at their backs. Two field goals from Ronnie Pfeffer of

Quinlan finished the day 14 of 26 for 230 yards and a touchdown to lead the Marauders. Dicroce led McMaster with five recpetions for 89 yards and a touchdown while Christopher Pezzetta of Burlington, Ont., had a game-high 79 rushing yards and a touchdown. Defensively, Laurier got strong performances from Samuel Aird of Ancaster, Ont., and Ben Ivany of Schomberg, Ont., who each had seven total tackles on the afternoon. McMasters top defensive performer was Nicholas Shorthill of Nobleton, Ont., who had five total tackles. Laurier will wrap up their regular season next Saturday when they travel to Guelph to battle the Gryphons. The Golden Hawks will need a victory to guarantee themselves an eighth consecutive trip to the postseason.

“Hawks clinch playoff spot in Guelph” “Laurier beats Guelph 15-10; will face Queen’s in quarter-finals” by Jamie Howieson GUELPH, Ont. (October 22, 2011) - With a spot in the OUA playoffs on the line, the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks (4-4) forced five turnovers as they defeated the Guelph Gryphons (2-6) by a score of 15-10 on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Stadium.

With the win, the Hawks finish sixth in the OUA and will now travel to Kingston to battle the third-seed Queen’s Gaels, who stunned the No. 1 Western Mustangs with a 37-0 victory on Saturday, in the OUA Quarter-finals. Game time at Richardson Stadium in Kingston is set for 1 p.m.

The Hawks would open the scoring seven minutes into the opening quarter when Ronnie Pfeffer of Kitchener, Ont., hit a 34 yard field goal to stake Laurier to a 3-0. Guelph would tie the game on a 21 yard field goal by Daniel Ferraro of Mississauga, Ont., in the second quarter and that would be all the scoring in the opening half as the teams went to the locker rooms tied at three.

NOTES: Linebackers Collins and Mitchell Bosch of Langley, B.C., both left Saturday’s contest with injuries...their status for Saturday’s quarter-final game is unknown...Kelly set new singleseason school records with 177 completions and 303 attempts...he finished the season as the CIS leader in both passing yards (2,236) and touchdowns (20)

Pfeffer would give the Hawks the lead once more in the third quarter when he nailed a career-long 43 yard field goal six minutes into the half. From there, Laurier’s defence would step up as they forced the Gryphons to take a safety, giving them an 8-3 lead through three quarters. The purple and gold stretched their lead to 12 early in the fourth when they scored the game’s opening touchdown. After a couple of key runs from Tyrrel Wilson of Hamilton, running back Rashad La Touche of Whitby, Ont., punched the ball in from two yards out to give Laurier a 15-3 lead. Guelph would push to get back into the game but the Hawks defence came up with two key stops. First, Scott McCahill of Kingston, Ont., intercepted Guelph quarterback Jazz Lindsey of Markham, Ont., in the endzone before the Hawks forced a turnover on downs late in the game. The Gryphons would find the endzone with 5.5 seconds left in the game when Lindsey hit Jedd Gardner of Niagara Falls, Ont., for an 18 yard score but it wouldn’t be enough as Laurier held on for the victory. Although the Hawks allowed the Gryphons to put up 428 offensive yards in the game, the defence did not break and forced Guelph into two interceptions, two fumbles and a turnover on downs. Pfeffer would cut the lead to four with his career-best third field goal of the game but the Hawks never got the ball back as the Gaels ran out the clock to advance to the semifinals. Chambers had a big performance for Laurier in what could be his last game in a Golden Hawks uniform as he pulled in 11 catches for 111 yards. The 11 catches are the fourth most by a Laurier player in a single game.

“Hawks fall to Gaels in OUA Quarter-final” “Laurier’s season comes to an end after 14-10 loss to Queens” by Jamie Howieson KINGSTON, Ont. (October 29, 2011) - In a low scoring affair, Queen’s Ryan Granberg of Sherwood Park, Alta., scored the games lone touchdown as the No. 8 Gaels knocked off the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks by a score of 14-10 in the OUA Quarterfinal at Richardson Stadium.

Meanwhile, Kelly, in his final game as a Hawk finished 30 of 47 for 307 yards but was intercepted on three occasions. Kelly’s counterpart Ryan Mitchell of Toronto, who started his first career CIS game in place of injured starter Billy McPhee of Burlington, Ont., completed 23 of 38 passes for 272 yards. Gaels receiver Giovanni Aprile of Toronto, was his favourite target, pulling in seven catches for 87 yards.

With the loss, the Golden Hawks season comes to an end and the team fails to reach the OUA Semifinals for the first time since 2002.

Queen’s will now move on to face the No. 3 McMaster Marauders in one OUA Semifinal. The Windsor Lancers, who upset the Ottawa Gee-Gees 50-33 on their home turf, will face the No. 4 Western Mustangs in the other semifinal.

In a game that was eerily similar to the Hawks contest a week ago against the Guelph Gryphons, Laurier and Queen’s spent the majority of the first half battling for field position as both defences shut down the opposing offence.

After a scoreless first quarter, Laurier got on the board first thanks to a Ronnie Pfeffer (Kitchener, Ont.) rouge. Queen’s kicker Dan Village of Abbotsford, B.C., would knot the score at one with a rouge of his own later in the quarter. Before the half was out, both kickers would trade field goals, with Pfeffer hitting from 11 yards and Village nailing a 29 yard attempt, as the two teams went into the locker room tied at four. Early in the third quarter, it appeared as though the Hawks had taken the lead when Laurier quarterback Shane Kelly of Basking Ridge, N.J., connected with Shamawd Chambers of Markham, Ont., in the endzone but the touchdown was wiped out due to a Laurier holding penalty. Queen’s would then take the lead on a 35 yard field goal by Village but on the Hawks next possession, Pfeffer once again came through for Laurier and tied the game at seven with a 17 yard field goal. The games turning point game early in the fourth quarter as the Gaels drove down field and on third and one from Lauriers one yard line, Granberg punched the ball in to give Queen’s a 14-7 advantage.

The Mitchell Bowl was first awarded in 2002, replacing the Atlantic Bowl, after the CIS voted in 2001 to change the permanent site of the Atlantic Bowl in the interest of competitive fairness. During that year, the Mitchell Bowl played opposite to that of the Churchill Bowl. However, with the introduction of the Uteck Bowl in 2003, the Mitchell Bowl replaced and assumed the history of the Churchill Bowl.

WILFRID LAURIER UNIVERSITY

HISTORY OF WILFRID LAURIER UNIVERSITY In 1910 the Canada Synod and Synod of Central Canada of the Lutheran Church entered into an agreement to establish a Lutheran Seminary. Though the location first proposed for the Seminary was Toronto, Waterloo was selected when its citizens offered a tract of land on the boundary of the town. The choice of location was affected, too, by the fact that the majority of Lutherans in Ontario lived in the vicinity of Waterloo and Berlin (Kitchener). In 1911 the Evangelical Lutheran Seminary of Canada opened its doors. Facilities for pre-theological education were established in 1914 with courses leading to senior matriculation given in Waterloo College School. In 1924 the Waterloo College of Arts, providing courses in post-secondary education in a four year program, was established. In 1925 the Faculty of Arts, under the name of Waterloo College, affiliated with the University of Western Ontario. Waterloo College soon began to offer Honours degree programs in the arts. The affiliation with the University of Western Ontario ended in 1960 when the Seminary obtained a revised charter changing the name of the institution to Waterloo Lutheran University. On November 1, 1973, Waterloo Lutheran University became Wilfrid Laurier University, one of Ontario’s provincially assisted universities after Bill 178 was given Royal Assent by the Lieutenant Governor, former Wilfrid Laurier University Chancellor William Ross Macdonald.
