M A X B L O U W, P R E S I D E N T As we prepare to start the new academic year, we also mark the start of a new season for our Golden Hawks football team – one that I know will be a shining example of leadership and purpose. The leadership team of new head football coach, Michael Faulds, and his strong coaching staff has a vision for the future of the Golden Hawk football program that will certainly inspire our student-athletes, both on and off the field. Equally inspiring is the generous support of our alumni, donors and partners. Your contributions are helping to provide an exceptional experience for our student-athletes – one that strengthens our athletic traditions and helps breathe strength into the Laurier family as a whole. I sincerely thank you.

In addition to the determination of the coaches and athletes, and the program’s strong supporters, the success of the Golden Hawks football program lies in the role it plays in rallying students, alumni, staff and faculty in a shared passion for our team and for our university. We hope to see that continued enthusiasm throughout the 2013 football season, including the Homecoming game Sept. 28 at Laurier’s Waterloo campus. I look forward to joining you in the stands as we cheer on the team. Go Hawks Go! Dr. Max Blouw President and Vice-Chancellor Wilfrid Laurier University

PETER BAXTER, DIRECTOR The success of Golden Hawks football lies in the role it plays as part of the ethos of the University. For five decades, the team has been a shining success for Wilfrid Laurier, rallying students, alumni, staff and faculty in a shared passion for the pursuit of excellence and achieving our vision of creating lives of leadership and purpose. The Fall of 2012 marked a season of change as last November, Head Coach Gary Jeffries stepped down after 31 years of service with our basketball and football programs, highlighted by his team’s 2005 Vanier Cup win in men’s football. On behalf of the many student-athletes and student-leaders he influenced within the Athletics and Recreation program we thank him sincerely for the difference he made. After a national search, a new leadership team was established to carry on Laurier’s tradition as a nationally recognized high performance program. 2

In January, Michael Faulds was named the new Manager of Football Operations and Head Coach. To improve is to change, to achieve excellence, to strive for perfection, you need to embrace change. Coach Faulds and his new staff of quality coaches have made significant changes to ensure Laurier football is back to a national calibre high performance program. To assist Coach Faulds in his vision will require your continuing support and contributions as students, sponsors and community. I sincerely appreciate your loyalty and dedication to all those who have generously given to the football program in the past. Every athletic team requires financial support. For those of you who wish to make future donations to the program I assure you that you will be part of rebuilding Laurier into a top football program in Canada. See you in the stands! Go Hawks!

SEASON PREVIEW

LAURIER FOOTBALL ENTERS NEW ERA

It was an up-and-down season for the Golden Hawks in 2012. The team lost their opening two games of the year but bounced back with two wins to even their record going into their annual Homecoming game. Taking on a tough Guelph squad, the young Hawks battled with the eventual Yates Cup finalists but came up just short, losing 22-19. After a shutout win against Waterloo, Laurier held on to the sixth and final playoff spot despite season-ending losses to Western and McMaster. Heavy underdogs heading into their playoff game on the road against Queen’s, an inexperienced squad lost out to the host Gaels who ended the Hawks’ playoff hopes for the second consecutive season.

However, keep an eye out for Michael Knevel if either of these two falter. The Brantford native has the size and ability to push both Fracas and John as he gets more experience in practice. Running Backs Returning: Issac Dell, Rashad LaTouche, Tyrrel Wilson, Dillon Campbell, Eric Guiltinan, Darian Ram Departures: Josh Pirie, Wylie Phillips, Kwasi Kwajah, Devante Wray Rookies: Chucks Okafor, Jude Armson, Nick Rempel

Five players who down and Michael Faulds handed the have filled the role in the past are back reins, the purple and gold are ready for for this season, led by CFL Draft Pick a fresh start. A large recruiting class will Isaac Dell, as well as East West Bowl join an already young roster but Coach participant Tyrrel Wilson. Between those Faulds has promised throughout training two, along with LaTouche, Campbell and camp that no team will outwork this Guiltinan, Coach Faulds has numerous year’s edition of the Golden Hawks. Add in the fact that incoming and that internal competition has the rookie Chucks Okafor has looked very team feeling confident as they prepare for strong in camp, Laurier’s running game the eight games that awaite them in the appears to be stronger than it has in the OUA schedule. Combined with the fact Rookies: Michael Knevel that the team lost three others starters from the 2012 squad, things weren’t looking good for Coach Faulds and his offence. However, For the second consecutive season, the role of the team’s starting the group that showed up to camp has been impressive and showed quarterback is wide open. After the departures of both Steve off their skill in the team’s scrimmage with Waterloo. Veterans Greg Fantham and Travis Eman, who combined to start all nine of the Nyhof, Kelvin Muamba and Scott Campbell all performed well Hawks games in 2012, incumbents James Fracas and Julien John while rookie Marcus Arkarakas and transfer Anthony Pizzuti both have the inside track on earning the number one role. The hardest hit area in terms of graduation is Laurier’s linebacking core. All three starters from last year have left, including the Hawks all-time leading tackler in Mitchell Bosch. In their place, the Hawks will look to converted safety Chris Ackie to lead a young group that will also feature Sam Montazeri and Jesse Collins, who returns after a year off due to injury. Included in that group are team Rookie of the Year Tanner Philp as well as Austin Reusch and Jordan Schulz. MICHAEL FAULDS

MANAGER OF FOOTBALL OPERATIONS & HEAD COACH

Michael Faulds enters his first season as head coach and offensive coordinator for the Golden Hawks. The sixth head coach in the 52 year history of Laurier’s football program, Faulds was hired on January 8, 2013 to succeed Gary Jeffries, who stepped down following the 2012 season. Despite being a head coach for the first time in his career, Faulds brings to Laurier an already impressive resume that includes numerous accomplishments as

both a coach and a player. He joins the Hawks after serving the previous three seasons as the offensive coordinator for the York Lions. In that position, he masterminded the rapid succession of a York program that went from 26th to seventh in the country in yardage per game. In his final season with the Lions in 2012, York ranked third overall in the OUA in both passing and total yards per game using a no-huddle, pro-style offence. Faulds has also been successful as a coach on the international stage. In 2012, he served as the quarterback coach for Team

RON VANMOERKERKE

Canada at the International Federation of American Football (IFAF) U19 World Championship, helping guide the team to a 23-17 victory over the heavily-favoured American squad in the gold medal game. He reprised the role this past February when he coached Team World at the International Bowl in Austin, Texas. His path into coaching is grounded in a stellar career as a player at both the CIS and international level. A graduate of Western University with both a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Kinesiology, specializing in coaching, Faulds is the owner of two of the most prestigious records in CIS history, including the CIS all-time passing record of 10,811 yards as well as the single season passing record of 3,033 yards, which he set in 2009. That same season he also was named the OUA Most Outstanding Player while guiding the Mustangs to the Yates Cup. He also earned Yates Cup MVP honours in both 2007 and 2008 after leading Western to the OUA championship. Outside of the CIS, Faulds had a decorated career with Team Canada, serving as the U19 quarterback on three occasions, including 2000, 2002 and 2003. He also guided Canada to a silver medal at the IFAF Senior World Championship in Austria in July, 2011. Faulds and his wife Stacey live in Kitchener.

ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH & DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR

Ron Vanmoerkerke is entering his 14th year coaching with the Golden Hawks. He returns again to the role of Defensive Coordinator, a position he has held since the 2003 season. In the offseason, he was also given the title of Associate Head Coach after the addition of Michael Faulds as Head Coach. Ron’s track record with Laurier is a long and storied one; he played in the late 80’s and was on the 1987 Yates Cup championship team. In 1988, Ron received the Laurier Alumni Association Academic and Athletic Achievement Award. In 1989, Ron was named an OUA first-team all-star

DWAYNE CAMERON

SPECIAL TEAMS & RECRUITING COORDINATOR

Dwayne Cameron is entering his eighth season as a coach with the Golden Hawks. After having previously served as a defensive assistant and as the defensive backs coach, Cameron has been handed additional duties with Laurier this season and is now in charge of the special teams as well as all recruiting actitivies. Cameron first joined the Hawks in 2004 and was responsible for managing the defensive backs during Laurier’s two Yates Cup wins in 2004 and 2005 as well as the 2005 Vanier Cup. Following the 2009 season, Cameron left

linebacker and team MVP. At present, Ron is a teacher and the Department Head of Social Science at Eastwood Collegiate High School in Kitchener. Prior to becoming the Defensive Coordinator with the Hawks, Ron was the Head Coach at Eastwood and Galt Collegiate. Ron lives with his wife Karen and their daughter Grace and son Austin in West Montrose.

Laurier when he was hired as an assistant coach for special teams and defence by the CFL’s Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Cameron served the role for two seasons under head coach Marcel Bellefeuille before returning to the Hawks in 2012. Since being handed the reins for recruiting for Laurier, Cameron has dramatically changed the program’s philosophy, implementing signing ceremonies at each recruits high school, making each signing an event for the prospective Golden Hawk.

THREE FOOTBALL PLAYERS TO

Continuing a tradition that has held strong for the past couple of years, the 2013 Golden Hawk Hall of Fame induction class is well represented by former members of the football team. Since 2010, eight players and one team have all seen their names etched into history and this year, three more will join the group representing football that is now 49 players and seven teams strong. Joining this historic group of athletes will be Brian Devlin, Anthony Maggiacomo and Scott Evans. Devlin was a kicker for the Golden Hawks from 2003 until 2005 and is best known for being the player who helped clinch Laurier its second Vanier Cup title when he kicked the game-winning field goal against Saskatchewan. A two-time Yates Cup Champion,

Devlin was honoured as a CIS Second Team AllCanadian in 2005 as well as earning both first and second team OUA All-Star awards the same season for both his place kicking and punting abilities. Despite playing for just three seasons with the Hawks, Devlin ranks fourth all-time for career kickoff yards and seventh all-time for career punting yards. Maggiacomo suited up for Laurier from 2003 until 2007 as a linebacker. Also a member of the Golden Hawks 2005 Vanier Cup championship squad and a two-time Yates Cup winner, he produced one of the best defensive performances in team history in his final year at Laurier. Recording 60.5 tackles in 2007, third-best in

JOIN HALL OF FAME IN 2013 Hawks’ history, Maggiacomo would go on to earn CIS Second Team All-Canadian and OUA First Team All-Star honours, the OUA President’s Trophy for Outstanding Stand-Up Defensive Player as well as Laurier’s President’s Award as the top male athlete. Evans was an offensive lineman for the Golden Hawks between 2003 and 2008. A Vanier Cup and Yates Cup champion in 2005, he was a force in the trenches for Laurier, earning OUA First Team All-Star honours three times, in 2006, 2007 and 2008, as well as CIS Second Team All-Canadian honours in 2006 and 2008. In 2007, he was also named as the OUA and CIS winner of the J.P. Metras Trophy for Lineman of the Year as

well as a CIS First Team All-Canadian. Three others will join Devlin, Maggiacomo and Evans as they enter the Hall of Fame in September. Erika Howard, a four-time OUA Championship with the women’s lacrosse team, will become the first lacrosse player to be inducted since the 2006 ceremony. Bill Francis, who helped the men’s curling team win their first CIS Championship in 2007-08, is the first curling athlete to ever be inducted while Dean Boles, an influential head coach with the swim program for 22 years, enters the Hall of Fame as a builder. Isaac Dell

GEARING UP FOR BIG LEAGUES

FB Isaac Dell looks to make impact in final season BY: SHELBY BLACKLEY

Come the 2013 season, fifth-year fullback Isaac Dell will represent the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks one last time. After a stellar four years with the Hawks, dating back to his freshman year in 2009, Dell will suit up in the purple and gold for his remaining season of eligibility with an impressive resume and a handful of leadership. However, the humble fullback believes his best example of direction comes when he

has the ball in his hands. “I just try to lead by example with my actions on the field, not so much vocally, but I feel like there are other people on the field that do well with that, so we kind of have both ends covered,” he said. Dell began his football career at Stamford Collegiate in his hometown of Niagara Falls, Ont., playing all four years for the Hornets. In 2008, Dell helped lead the Hornets to their first undefeated regular season in 20 years, where Stamford lost by one point in the Varsity 1 division championship. Dell decided to continue to pursue football at the post-secondary level, heading to Waterloo, Ont., and joining the Golden Hawks. In four years and an accumulation of 30 games, Dell has rushed for 210 yards in 42 attempts. He has scored six touchdowns – five of which came in 2010. In the 2012 season, the kinesiology and physical education major had rushed 112 yards in 9 games on 24 attempts. He was named football player of the game on Sept. 3 against the Toronto Varsity Blues, as well as on October 20 against the McMaster Marauders. 2012 was also an opportunity for Dell to showcase his talent to CFL scouts, as he was invited to the East West Bowl in London, Ont., alongside teammates Alex Anthony and Felix Odum. Dell said it gave him a chance to learn a valuable skill set to bring back to the Hawks In March of 2013, Dell was one of two Golden Hawks invited to the CFL combine, an opportunity to showcase your skills to CFL teams before the draft in May. And Dell did not disappoint. The 6-1, 218-pound fullback turned heads during the broad jump, leaping ten feet, three inches. His score was the best among running backs at the combine, and third overall.

In the three-cone drill, Dell repeated his success and finished with a time of 6.962 seconds, once again putting him first among running backs and third overall. He also finished second among running backs for the 40-yard dash, finishing in 4.755, and third in the bench press with 22 reps. So, while at the comfort of his Niagara Falls home this past May, Dell and his family watched anxiously as the CFL draft took place. With the remaining rounds being streamed online, Dell, his sister and his mother watched players be taken, until his sister saw that he was taken 37th overall in the fifth round to the Hamilton Tiger Cats, about a minute before the TSN panel announced it. “I don’t know at what point it will [set in], probably at training camp,” Dell said back in May from his Niagara Falls home. “It is exciting, but hasn’t quite hit home yet.” Dell spent the early months of the summer at the Ti-Cats training camp before suffering a concussion, which forced him to the sidelines. Following the injury, he opted to return to the Golden Hawks to use up his last year of CIS eligibility, before potentially returning to the CFL next year. With training camp over and the Hawks moving toward their new season, Dell sees a new focus for the Hawks, which he will try to help implement on the field. “I’m not necessarily personally implementing anything, but as a team, our motto is to be disciplined, and execute,” he said. “So, know our jobs, know our assignments, and do it at a high level, simply because we are a young team.” As one of only two fifth-year returning players, Dell knows that it will take an extra little bit for the young Hawk squad to produce positive results. “That’s how we’re going to be teams, not with experience, but with execution, discipline and being sound assignment wise.”
