Past Golden Hawk Head Coaches Football has been played at the University level in Canada since 1906 with the formation of the Canadian Interuniversity Athletic Union (CIAU) being the first league created. The first varsity football team at Waterloo Lutheran competed in 1961. Since then the Golden Hawks have had an overall record of 282-132-8. The Celeri Years Coach: Bob Celeri Date: 1961 to 1965 Length of Tenure: 5 seasons

Overall Record: 23-7-1 (0.766)

Accomplishments: Celeri was named the first head coach in Golden Hawk history. Celeri lead the Golden Hawks to an undefeated record in 1961 and 1962, before the Vanier Cup was put in place.

The “Tuffy” Years Coach: David “Tuffy” Knight Date: 1966 to 1983 Length of Tenure: 18 seasons

Regular Season Record: 87-33-5 (0.725) Playoff Record: 14-13 (0.519) Overall Record: 101-46-5 (0.687) Accomplishments: “Tuffy” Knight led the Golden Hawks towards 7 Yates Cup championships, as well as three second place finishes at the National Championship. Knight was named the CIS Coach of the Year in both 1972 and 1979.

The Newbrough Years Coach: Rich Newbrough Date: 1984 to 1993 Length of Tenure: 10 seasons

Regular Season Record: 47-23 (0.671) Playoff Record: 8-7 (0.533) Overall Record: 55-30 (0.647)

Accomplishments: Rich Newbrough became the first head coach in Golden Hawk history to capture the Vanier Cup. The Golden Hawks also earned 2 Yates Cups’ dur ing his tenure. Newbrough was named the CIS Coach of the Year in 1991.

The Zmich Years Coach: Rich Zmich Date: 1993 to 2002 Length of Tenure: 9 seasons

Regular Season Record: 42-28-1 (0.592) Playoff Record: 4-8 (0.333) Overall Record: 46-36-1 (0.554)

Accomplishments: Rich Zmich’s Golden Hawks squads were finalists in 4 Yates Cups during his tenure. Zmich was named the CIS Coach of the Year in 1995.

The Jeffries Years Coach: Gary Jeffries Date: 2003 to Present Length of Tenure: 8 seasons

Regular Season Record: 51-12-0-1 (0.810) Playoff Record: 11-7 (0.610) Overall Record: 62-19-0-1 (0.765)

Accomplishments: Coach Jeffries became the second coach in Golden Hawk history to lead his team to a Vanier Cup Championship. Gary Jeffries has been named the OUA Coach of the Year four times in the past 8 seasons. He was also named the CIS Coach of the Year in 2005.

Academics at Wilfrid Laurier This is why you are attending Laurier and we place a great deal of emphasis in the academic area. The entrance requirements will vary from year to year, however here is a guideline for our three major academic areas: - 80% for Arts and Science - 85% for Kinesiology - 85% for Business A 3-5% window is available in all programs with 3 letter’s of reference from your teachers, including one from your principal. A minimum of 60% is required in English for admission to WLU. A minimum of 70% in calculus is required to enter the Honours Business program. For the BA. Kin program you must have a grade 11 math and a minimum of 70% in 12U Biology. For BSc. Kinesiology you must have a minimum of 70% in 12U Biology, a minimum of 60% in 12U Calculus and either a 12U Chemistry or Physics at 60%. It should also be noted that for the BSc Kin program you must have an overall average of at least 70% in your Math and Science courses combined. Tutorial support is offered by both the University and the football program at no charge to you. Off season study hall is provided twice per week for three hour sessions.

Support Letters A total of THREE letters of support are requires for those academic averages close to Wilfrid Laurier’s projected cutoffs. One of these letters must be from the principal or vice-principal and the other two from teachers currently on staff at your school. These letter’s should attest to:

- Deportment/Conduct - Citizenship within the school - Participation in Athletics - Participation in Clubs, School, Government - Work Commitments Outside of School - Ability to Succeed at University

These letters should be faxed as soon as possible to the attention of Coach Jeffries at the Golden Hawk Football Office at (519) 746-7117 Letters are not required for those who have academic averages above our projected cutoffs.

Training Out of Season Weight Training We have a 4-week preparatory cycle in December. The focus is on full body, dynamic strength movements. Three 8-week cycles (January - August) are designed to build overall dynamic flexibility plus strength. Focus is on Olympic power lifts such as power clean, clean and jerk, squat and push press. The program is based on working out three times per week and progress is monitored by the strength and conditioning coach In Season Weight Training A twice-a-week maintenance program is designed to maintain and condition players. Focus is on core strength, full body dynamic movement and strength. Off Season Workout Program (SAC PROGRAM) Agility, flexibility and quickness workouts 2x per week for 45 minutes held at the Stadium. These workouts will be at the regular 4:30 practice time. We begin this program right after reading week. Off-Season Workouts at RIM PARK Fieldhouse We have 10 full practices during the winter at our indoor facility at Rim Park in Waterloo. The surface is field turf. Spring Practice (SAC PROGRAM) We will have 8 practices in the spring and we hold them the week prior to final exams in early April. This affords the student/athlete the opportunity to go home immediately after exams are completed. Summer Sprint Program Led by Brent McFarlane, the former sprint coach for the Canadian National Team, Chuck Thompson and Rohan Thompson. This is a 6 week program in June and July to improve running skills and increase speed. 11


August Training Camp On field training camp begins 14 days prior to the opening of the season, two weeks prior to Labor Day. All freshmen are housed on campus for camp and all meals are provided for the entire roster. A typical camp schedule: Day 1

Facilities We play and practice at Knight-Newbrough Field the newly renovated University Stadium with a seating capacity of 6,000. The playing surface was changed to field turf for the 2007 season. We have a new locker room as well as new therapy, equipment and meeting room areas. There is a new state of the art weight room facility located in our Athletic Complex. Our facilities are second to none.

Work Opportunities On campus jobs that players have secured in the past include the student pub and lounge, security, athletic complex and stadium, print shop and the Bookstore.

Financial Assistance This year’s athletic scholarships will be available to a maximum of $3,500 for students with a minimum grade 12 average of 80%. Bursaries are available to all students who can show financial need and are valued up to $1000. An entrance bursary is available up to $2,000 and must be applied for prior to April 1. The Tom Allen, Chris Worden and Country Roads scholarships are also available.

Alumni Support Alumni support comes in the form of many Football Club initiatives, the Corporate Dinner, the football golf tournament, the Adopt a Hawk program and many generous individual donations. The Friends of Football Corporate Dinner raised $40,000 this year.

Administrative Support The support from the Administration, the President of the University on down, is second to none. Recruiting visits may include, depending upon availability, visits to the President’s Office, the Dean of Students, the Vice President of the University Advancement, the Athletic Director, the Awards office and the Admissions Office.

Quarterback Club This is a weekly luncheon to honor the players of the game. Coaches discuss the previous game and the upcoming opponent. Film of the last game is also reviewed. This event is held on campus in the Turret for alumni and friends of WLU football.

National TV Coverage The Golden Hawks are typically on National television 2-5 times per year - Networks include: The Score and TSN. The remainder of games are typically covered by Roger’s Cable TV.
