“Building Champions, Building Traditions”

Volume 11, Issue 1 One At Laurier, we take great pride in our focus on inspiring lives of leadership and purpose. Dr. Max Blouw It’s the foundation beneath our unique sense of community and the fuel that keeps our school spirit alight. Each day, I am inspired by a new story of a Laurier student, alumni, faculty or staff member living a life that is meaningful and engaged. Laurier’s varsity athletes are no different. Our athletes embrace strong leadership values and they are driven by a deep sense of shared purpose. I see it in the pride they feel when they wear their purple and gold, and in the way they’ve inspired leagues of fans over the years. This year we saw it in another successful sports season, punctuated by a women’s provincial hockey championship, two national cheerleading championships, a silver OUA medal in men’s baseball and highlights in football and women’s curling. But at Laurier, our athletes value more than their performance on the field, the rink or the soccer pitch. When they hang up their jerseys, they apply their leadership values by making a difference in our communities – as students and as volunteers. It’s one of the reasons why our athletic awards programs rec

A Message from Peter Baxter When people talk about leadership, they often use the word passion. And when we think about passion we tend to think about the emotions like Peter Baxter enthusiasm, zeal, energy, and intensity. Well, all these attributes are true, but when you look up the word passion in the dictionary that includes origins of the word, you’ll see that it comes from the Latin word for suffering. Our Laurier coaches and staff take on their leadership role making significant contributions for the long term development of individuals and the Golden Hawk program that continues to adapt, prosper and grow. Our student-athletes train and sacrifice much for team and institutional pride.

They trade off personal needs for by putting the needs of team and Laurier first. Nearly every act of leadership requires suffering. We understand that nothing great comes without great costs. Many alumni, friends and sponsors have also made significant contributions to the greater good of the program. This sends a message loud and clear that you have the best interests of the program at heart. Each of your contributions lives in the memories of our student-athlete experience and we sincerely thank you for your compassionate contribution to those lives you have touched. Laurier looks forward to the 20102011 season with passion and excitement. Homecoming expects will be a huge

Hawk gathering as we play Guelph on Saturday, October 2, 2010. Hall of Famer Greg Puhalski starts his tenure behind the bench of the Men’s Hockey Team this fall, and in March of 2011 we host the CIS Women’s Hockey National Championships at our home rink, the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex. I invite you all to participate in the upcoming season. Make the Golden Hawks your passion and share it with your friends and family. We hope to see you in the stands.

in Kitchener. Battling last-minute injury the purple and gold busted out a superb performance to win their first Cheer Alliance title. It was a banner year for men’s baseball as they turned in the best performance in team history. Compiling a 10-8 record the Golden Hawks were near the top of the standing all season. Led by OUA Rookieof-the-Year Andrew Greenberg and various veterans Laurier swept McMaster on their way to the OUA finals against Western Mustangs. Western took the title in two games clinching in extra innings after a terrific pitching duel between Greenberg and the Mustangs’ Andrew Bergman. The OUA silver medal is the highest finish in team history. Reliever Josh Robinson was named to the OUA All-Star team.

The women’s curling team competed in three championships, winning bronze, silver, and gold.

After six straight OUA s Laurier’s lacrosse team ran into unfamiliar territory compiling a 7-5 record over the course of the regular season. Riding a two-game winning streak into their semifinal match with the University of Toronto, the Lady Hawks rallied from a 4-3 deficit to win 8-7 avenging losses to the Varsity Blues earlier in the year. The OUA title game brought the Western Mustangs, who had ended Laurier’s 29-game multi-season winning streak. Western prevailed once again claiming a 9-5 victory. Four Golden Hawks were named OUA All-Stars. On the football field, Laurier came into the season gunning for the Yates Cup. One of the year’s biggest games came in week two as the team went head to head with Western but was limited to one score in a 30-7 loss. After a disappointing two-point loss to Ottawa during homecoming Laurier reeled off three straight wins to finish second and earn a playoff bye. During a win over Guelph,

The Men’s Hockey team had two separate strong six-game runs of 5-0-1 to start the season and again halfway through the year. One of the highlights included defeating the previously unbeaten McGill Redmen in an 8-4 win, featuring 122 penalty minutes. The regular season ended with Laurier in fourth in the OUA West after a 17-7-4 record. Hosting Guelph in the first round of the playoffs, the Golden Hawks were upset 3-0 in the opener. Captain Jean- Michel Rizk and Paul Bradley were named AllStars. The men’s basketball fought through a tough season to finish with a 10-12 record, securing the last playoff berth in the OUA West. The girls each showed personal bests and earned Laurier’s best showing in a decade coming in tenth. The men’s curling team had a strong start at the West Sectionals, going 3-1 with wins over Waterloo, Brock and Windsor to have momentum heading into the Crossovers. Unfortunately the momentum did not carry over as the purple and gold dropped four of their five matches including the tiebreaker against Trent. Taking advantage of an opening the Golden Hawks were able to represent the OUA at the CIS finals. Laurier went 2-4 ending their season with an 8-7 win over Calgary.
