Volume 11, Issue 1 One At Laurier, we take great pride in our focus on inspiring lives of leadership and purpose. Dr. Max Blouw It’s the foundation beneath our unique sense of community and the fuel that keeps our school spirit alight. Each day, I am inspired by a new story of a Laurier student, alumni, faculty or staff member living a life that is meaningful and engaged. Laurier’s varsity athletes are no different. Our athletes embrace strong leadership values and they are driven by a deep sense of shared purpose. I see it in the pride they feel when they wear their purple and gold, and in the way they’ve inspired leagues of fans over the years. This year we saw it in another successful sports season, punctuated by a women’s provincial hockey championship, two national cheerleading championships, a silver OUA medal in men’s baseball and highlights in football and women’s curling. But at Laurier, our athletes value more than their performance on the field, the rink or the soccer pitch. When they hang up their jerseys, they apply their leadership values by making a difference in our communities – as students and as volunteers. 09-10 sees more gold for the Golden Hawks

Cheerleading took home two national titles, making it four in three years for the impressive squad.

Wilfrid Laurier University continued to excel on the field, in the rink, and on the court as varsity athletes turned out Impressive individual performances at the provincial and national levels. The Golden Hawks were once again found success in team play winning one provincial and two and national s for the 2009-2010 season. Laurier Athletics produced 42 OUA allstars and 7 national all-Canadians, as well as numerous All-Rookie honours. Here is a closer look at the headlines that emerged in purple and gold… The 2009-2010 women’s hockey season was all about a quest to avenge back-toback silver medals at the national tournament. Laurier began OUA regular season play right where it left off the previous year putting together a 26-game winning streak, which was ended in overtime of the season finale against Windsor. Leading the way was OUA and CIS Player of the Year Liz Knox, who tied the OUA and CIS shutout record. After dispatching Queen’s and Guelph in two games each, Laurier won its seventh straight OUA title, tying the previous record held by the University of Toronto Blues. It was a return trip to Antigonish, Nova Scotia with Laurier going 1-1 in pool play at the CIS finals. In the bronze medal showdown they shutout Saint Mary’s to take home another CIS medal.

The Lady Hawks won their seventh consecutive OUA championship on the ice in March.

The women’s curling team had another eventful season in 2009-2010 claiming a gold, silver and bronze at the championships they took part in. Early in the season the Lady Hawks had a 1-3 record at the West Sectionals. Representing Canada at the Karuizawa International Curling championships in Japan the squad went 6-1 in round-robin play and defeated Sweden 12-11 for gold. The strong play continued as the girls won seven of their next eight games earning a spot in the OUA championship. They lost 6-5 to Waterloo but earned another trip to nationals in Edmonton. After strong pool play the Golden Hawks fell 11-5 to Regina in the semifinal, leaving Laurier with the bronze medal. Skip Danielle Inglis was named a CIS Second Team All-Canadian and won the Curling Sportsmanship Award. Lead Hillary McDermott was named an OUA First Team All-Star. Cheerleading won two national titles in another excellent year starting in December in the Small Coed Division at the 25th Annual University and Open National Cheerleading Championships. After two runs of great stunts and high-energy choreography the Golden Hawks beat their closest competition by 81 points.
