Golden Hawk athletics has long been part of the proud heritage of Wilfrid Laurier U n i v e r s i t y. Whether you are participating as an athlete, a supporting student, alumnus or friend, your contribution to the success of our programs over the years has been much valued and appreciated. At Laurier, we believe that learning goes beyond the lecture hall and involvement in Golden Hawk athletics is a valuable leadership experience that will serve our student athletes throughout their lifetime. In the past couple of years, we have, by working together, developed a new spirit of enthusiasm and renewal in Golden Hawk athletics and this could not have been done without your participation and support. We have invested in new fitness equipment, renewed physical facilities and have placed a considerable focus on the recruitment of coaches and high quality student athletes with both outstanding academic and athletic credentials. Golden Hawks shine For the first time in Laurier history, University Stadium was sold out. Over 8,000 people packed in for the 101st Yates Cup, which pitted the Golden Hawk Football Team against their cross-town rivals the University of Waterloo Warriors. The Hawks held home field advantage in their first trip to the Yates Cup since 1995, after a very successful regular season in which the Hawks went 6-2. In the quarterfinals, the Golden Hawks faced a hungry McMaster Marauders squad and did not disappoint the fans, as both teams amassed a total of 1067 yards of offense. However, the Hawks forced 5 McMaster turnovers to secure a 42-27 victory. Although the Hawks beat the Warriors in the regular season, history did not repeat itself as they lost a nail-biter game 32-20. Despite the disappointing loss, there were a number of noteworthy highlights. A school record was broken as four First-Team AllCanadians and 15 Conference All-Stars were selected from WLU. Laurier players walked away with 3 out of the possible 4 major OUA awards. Kojo Millington was the first Hawk to ever play in the East-West Shrine Game in Palo Alto, California. Also, four players were drafted into the CFL and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers signed Defensive Half-Back Donnie Ruiz. The team's final CIAU standing of 6th

Michelle Cruz made a giant “splash” in the CIAU Championships, picking up five medals including a gold in the 200-m backstroke
and most of the players returning from last season bodes well for the Hawks in the 2000 campaign. Success on the national stage was not limited to the football field as swimming sensation Michelle Cruz became the first Laurier swimmer ever to capture a CIAU championship. Doug Browne also experienced great success as he captured bronze medals in the 200 fly, 400 free, and 200 free at the CIAU Championship. Both first-year Cruz and second-year Browne were named CIAU AllCanadians, as were teammates Spencer Cowan, Mike Thompson, and John Peleck. Coach Dean Boles was named OUA Coach of the Year. The men ended their season with a CIAU ranking of 9th and the women with a ranking of 6th. Boles and his young squad of five All-Canadians hold a promising future for the Laurier Swimming Hawks.

SHARED PURPOSE Golden Hawk Alumni and Laurier Athletics
Since it's inception on August 1st 1999, the Laurier Athletics website, www.laurierathletics.com, has proven to be an effective tool for the entire Athletics and Recreation Department. The site provides the Laurier Campus and community with information about all aspects of the athletic department from varsity scores to staff contact information. laurierathletics.com is packed with information for Hawks of the past, present and future. As with any website, visitor traffic is an important gauge to the success of the site. Upon launch, laurierathletics. com received a mere twenty to thirty visitors per day, but by the end of the academic year it has been hosting in excess of one hundred seventy-five visitors every day. These numbers have lowered to approximately one hundred and twenty guests a day for the summer, but promise to leap up to record numbers in the fall. In an attempt to improve the browsing experience for visitors to laurierathletics.com, and to increase site traffic, some major changes are in store for the upcoming year, including a revamped home page with more information. Some minor graphical updates throughout the site will also be included. The site will undergo a slight restructuring to improve user navigation and the ability for visitors to find the content they are looking for. The website will see several additional features added to its current pages. One addition that is being considered is the possibility of online broadcasting. This feature would allow Golden Hawk fans to hear play-by-play reports of varsity games as they occur. One can look for most of these changes to be in place by the first of August at laurierathletics.com. As we celebrate the extraordinary success of the creation of the Golden Hawk Club for Athletic Alumni and Friends (launched just over eighteen months ago) it is gratifying to witness how this unparalleled fundraising effort has captured the imagination and commitment of so many. More than 230 individuals and companies have supported this campaign, the vast majority of them with very personal reasons for their commitment to Laurier's great athletic tradition. Active, meaningful involvement by our alumni and friends has resulted in a number of successful projects and events this past year. A series of brainstorming sessions involving our Golden Hawk Club Executive, students, faculty, and athletic staff, created a business plan to launch our website www.laurierathletics.com. Our Football Alumni and Friends organized one of the most successful corporate fundraising events in Laurier history with the First Annual Friends of Golden Hawk Football Dinner. Key basketball alumni provided their expertise and experience by assisting in our national search for a new men's basketball coach. Alumni gatherings prior to football games in the back yard of the Seagram Drive Football House provided additional opportunities for supporting Athletics. Over fifty alumni enjoyed the WLU Alumni ski trip to Whistler in April organized by Don Smith. This summer saw another sold-out Golden Hawk Golf tournament. The Golden Hawk Club has made steady progress toward their ambitious fundraising goals, in large part due to the involvement of many alumni and staff who never miss an opportunity to share their passion for their sport or athletics in general with prospective donors. If the success of the first year's fundraising efforts is any indication, that passion is contagious. The fundraising campaign is allowing us to put in place the best coaching leadership in the country. Currently, we have no less than six head coaches with National team experience, thereby ensuring that the best student-athletes will continue to be attracted to Laurier. Funds raised last year were also spent on new athletic therapy equipment to furnish our new clinic, strength training equipment, recruiting technology and expanded operations, sport psychology support, film editing and audiovisual equipment, protective equipment, as well

In addition, alumni donations have assisted in the Athletic Complex Renovation, a project both the University and the WLU student body have committed to equally to the total 3 million dollar budget. In September construction will be completed and we will re-open the facility housing new team rooms for Men's and Women's Basketball and Volleyball teams, upgraded locker room areas, a new Golden Hawk Lounge of Fame, athletic therapy clinic, business operations and coaches’ offices, strength training facilities and an aerobics studio. All of this is exciting news for raising the bar for Laurier Golden Hawk Programs. I personally wish to thank all who have contributed to the Golden Hawk Club. The student-athletes today and tomorrow are the greatest beneficiaries of your strong support. I hope that they will, in time, join our many alumni as passionate advocates of renewed private investment in Laurier Athletics. They are the most compelling evidence that there are no limits to what our alumni and friends can do to build the best interuniversity athletic program in Canada.

has been a year since the inception of the Golden Hawk Club and it has been a resounding success. The Golden Hawk Club was created as a means to conRandy tinue the tradiMcGlynn tion and pride that we had when we attended this institution. Together, we have seen an athletic program that has grown and improved both on and off the field in many different areas. In an endeavour to achieve excellence in all sports, we are getting great results by facilitating good coaching and input through interaction at a decision making levels. A key factor to this success has been working with Director of Athletics, Peter Baxter. Peter has always listened to alumni and shares in our view of the tradition and excellence of Laurier Athletics. However, it does take our input and money for this tradition to continue. As government funding continually declines, it is our external funding which allows the athletic department to put out such a quality product. There is a commitment to provide the community with a level of entertainment that rivals professional sports. Athletics enriched our lives when we were here as it gives people an opportunity to express themselves. We need to maintain a sense of tradition, while moving forward into the future to help build the best athletic program in Canada. I look forward to seeing you at the game!

Golden Hawk Alumni Golf Tournament Honours Belanger The 10th Annual Golden Hawk Alumni Golf Tournament was played on July 8th at Doon Valley Golf Club in Kitchener. This year's tournament honored Mike Belanger, one of the longest serving coaches at WLU. Belanger came to Laurier as a student in 1970, and later became coach of the Men's Varsity Golf Team. He is also involved in numerous committees including the Churchill Bowl, OUA Final Four Hockey, Nichols Golf Tournament and the Laurier Golf Classic. For all of his dedication and hard work, Mike received the Unsung Hero Award in '98 and was the OUA Golf Coach of the Year in '96. Mike Belanger has designed, developed and renovated many of the University residences, served as a WLUSU Liquor Services Manager, Director of Housing, Business Process Re-Engineering, Information Systems, and Parking Services. Mike is currently the Director of Residential Services. Six Former Hawks Inducte Keeping with the annual Homecoming tradition, the Golden Hawk Hall of Fame Dinner will take place on September 29th, 2000 at the Walper Terrace. This year, seven new members and the 1980’s Men’s Golden Hawk Soccer Team will be inducted into the Hall of Fame.
CIAU Player of the Year in 1995. A twotime Laurier President’s Trophy Award winner, she was also a member of two C I A U Championship teams in 1992 and 1995. Two men hockey players igi ignini are added to the list. John Spoltore played from 1992-95 and still holds records. He was the CIAU Rookie of the Year in 1992, CIAU All-Canadian in 1994 as well as a three-time OUAA All-Star. John sits at 21st place in OUAA career points with 176 and

Paul Nastasiuk Paul Nastasiuk was a two-time OUAA AllStar when he played for the Golden Hawks from 1983 to 1988. Paul started his career on a high note being named CIAU Rookie of the Year. Later, he was also named Most Valuable Player for the team. T w o women soccer players also join the Laurier elite. Sonya Ritcey played from 199094 and was one of the best goaltenders to wear the purple and onya itcey gold. She was a three-time OWIAA All-Star and two-time CIAU AllCanadian. On the 1992 CIAU Championship team, she was a key player who was named top goalkeeper and tournament All-Star. Gigi Cignini could not have accomplished anything more in her five years at WLU (199095). She was a four-time OWIAA All-Star, two-time CIAU All-Canadian, and named

John Spoltore 12th for career assists with 117. Al MacSorley was considered one of the best goaltenders Laurier ever had. During his career from 1976-79, Al was named an OUAA All-Star and first team All-Canadian. He is the first All-Canadian Golden Hawk Hockey player to ever strap on the skates. Rounding out the list of athletes is a men’s rugby player, Gord Young. He played for the Hawks from 1987-91 and was team captain for three of those years. Gord began as Rookie of the Year. He was a four-time OUA All-Star. In 1989 and 1990, he was also the assistant coach. (no photo available) The 1980’s Men’s Soccer Team will also be inducted this year. They were the first var

1980 Men’s Soccer Team sity men’s soccer team at Laurier and were coached by Barry Lyon. Impressively, they won the OUAA Championship the first year that they played in the league. The team then went on to deft Calgary and moved on to the CIAU
high as second. During this time he was also an assistant football coach and golf coach. From 1984-97 he served as Assistant Athletic Director and was the interim Athletic Director the next year. In 1989 he won the Unsung Hero award which is presented to an individual within the WLU community who unselfishly gives much time and effort in helping others in their pursuit of excellence as well as contributing to the overall success of the athletic program. Don is still seen around the Athletic Complex serving as
Al MacSorley Championship, however, they lost to UNB in the championship game. Don Smith will be inducted into the Builders category for his immense contributions to Laurier Athletics from 1970 to 1999. “Smitty” was the Men’s Basketball coach from 1970-82. Throughout this time he won one OUAA Championship, two OUAA West Championships and played in two CIAU Championships. From 1982 to 1994 he was the Men’s Volleyball coach. He coached them consistently to the playoffs finishing as

Football Corporate Dinner a huge success
On Wednesday, April 26, the First Annual Friends of Golden Hawk Football Reception and Dinner took place. The event raised funds to provide enhancements to Laurier Football and to involve the corporate community to increase the exposure of Golden Hawk Football. It was held at the Four Points Sheridan in downtown Kitchener and was a great success. The dinner was hosted by Master of Ceremonies Pete Martin who is known as the voice of the Toronto Argos. Martin kept the crowd entertained by interviewing past hawks, Jim Reid, Stefan Ptaszek, and Corey Grant who reminisced about the glory days at Laurier. The event concluded with a speech from keynote speaker Michael Wadsworth who is the outgoing Director of Athletics at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana. Wadsworth discussed the importance of a strong intercollegiate athletics program in a university environment. Due, in part, to the great prizes in the silent auction, the event raised over twenty-two thousand dollars for Laurier Football. This money will be used to purchase new equipment and create higher quality publications for recruiting purposes. Laurier Football would like to thank all those who participated and helped in making this one of the best events in Football history. A special kudos to Terry Reidel, chair of this talented committee, who prepared and ran this event. We look forward to seeing you throughout the season at University Stadium for what looks to be another great season of Laurier Football. Don't forget that the Second Annual Friends of Golden Hawk Football Reception and Dinner will be held on Wednesday, April 25th, 2001.

Laurier to co-host Men’s Hockey Championship Mark March 21-25th, 2001 on your calendars. This is when you will see some of the most exciting hockey action around. Wilfrid Laurier, in conjunction with the City of Kitchener, University of Guelph, and University of Waterloo are hosting the 2001 CIAU University Hockey Tournament. This six-team tournament will take place at the Kitchener Auditorium. The representatives will be the champions from the OUA East, OUA West, CWUAA, and AUAA. The remaining two teams will be the host team and a wildcard team (AUAA). However, who will be the host team when there are three teams helping host the tournament? This is where things get interesting. If one of the teams is either OUA East or West champions, then the two remaining teams will compete in a 2 out of 3 playoff match for entrance. If none of the three teams make the tournament through championships, there will be a three team round robin tournament and the winner will be determined by the team with the most points. These two types of possibilities will be played at the Kitchener Auditorium, after the OUA Final Four tournament. The four parties will divide the responsibilities of this tournament with a number of Laurier administration taking important roles. Co-ordinator of Marketing and Promotions, Roly Webster, chair of the media committee, is in charge of on-site media, stats, and press conferences/releases. Head Athletic Therapist, Jamie Carlson, chair of the medical committee, will ensure medical therapy. Manager of Interuniversity Athletics, Wayne Gowing, chair of the technical committee, is responsible for facilities, equipment, security, and officials. Wayne Gowing, former long-time WLU Hockey Coach is very excited about hosting this upcoming tournament. "The Kitchener Auditorium has had a very successful record of hosting championships. They have successfully hosted the Memorial Cup and Women's National Championships in 1997 and were well received", Gowing recalled. "An outstanding volunteer and fan base have supplied a lot of National Champions. We want to tap into this great fan base and show the excitement of University Hockey."

Laurier maintains dominance in intercollegiate athletics continued from cover On the ice, the varsity hockey teams also enjoyed success. The men's team ended the regular season third in the Far East division with a record of 11-10-5. The Hawks traveled to Windsor where they defeated the Lancers in two straight games. Stellar play from goaltender Frank Ivankovic attributed to much of the victory. The win over Windsor set the stage for a showdown between Western and a strong Mustang team. The winner received a berth in the OUA Final Four tournament. Sadly, the Hawks lost the first game by a score of 1-0 and the second game 3-2 in overtime. Jeff Ambrosio was named to the first team OUA All-Star. The men ended with a respectable CIAU ranking of 10th. The women's team faced a similar fate as their male counterparts. They ended their season with a record of 12-6, good for third place in the OUA. The defending OUA Champions found themselves on the short end of a 6-3 score against Guelph in the OUA Semifinals. However, they did rebound to capture the bronze medal by defeating York 5-3 with Lisa Backman netting 3 goals. Backman put the finishing touches on a great season by being named First-Team AllCanadian and WLU Female Athlete of the Year. Turning back to the field, the Golden Hawk soccer teams also had successful seasons. The men's team set out to play the Western Mustangs in the OUA West final, hoping to earn a trip to Victoria, B.C. for a chance at the national championship. Both teams traveled to the Soccer Center just outside of Toronto to play the final, as field conditions in London were too poor to play on. However, it was not the Golden Hawks’ day as they lost 3-0. All-Star. The women got off to a slow start due to numerous player injuries but were on a roll by the end of the season with a big 3-1 victory over the CIAU 7th ranked Western Mustangs. Since Laurier was hosting the Nationals, the women were given an automatic berth. However, the Hawks could not turn home field advantage and persistent play into golden results at the national level. Switching to volleyball, the women ended their season fourth in the west, but lost a close series 3-2 to York in the opening round of the playoffs. Stacey McCoy was named FirstTeam OUA All-Star. The men finished 5th in the OUA West and did not make the playoffs. Kelsey Orth was named Second-Team OUA All-Star. Keeping with the courts, the basketball teams showed great improvement from a year ago. The women ended 6th in the OUA West with a record of 6-15. In their first playoff game under new coach Stu Julius, they faced Brock, and lost 81-70. The men ended last in their division and did not make the playoffs for the third consecutive year. There were some highlights though as Rhadi Knapp was named OUA West Rookie of the Year and both he and Darren Viera were named to the OUA West Rookie Team. In curling action, the women could not repeat as OUA Champions and ended 4th in the OUA. The men ended their season ranked 5th. Don't forget, the 2000-2001 Athletic season kicks off on September 9th when the Golden Hawk football team travels to take on the Guelph Gryphons, at 2 p.m. in Alumni Stadium.
Life after Laurier Pounder wins Gold. . . again April 9th proved to be yet another landmark day in Golden Hawk Athletics history. Laurier graduate, Cheryl Pounder won her third Women's Hockey W o r l d Cheryl Pounder C h a m p i o n s h i p gold medal. Throughout the Championship tournament, Cheryl contributed many minutes of strong defense and has shown herself to be one of Team Canada's top defensive players. During gold medal play, Cheryl played a large role in Canada's exciting “come from behind” overtime win over the United States. This was Cheryl's third world championship win and Team Canada's sixth victory in a row! During her time as a Golden Hawk, Cheryl was a three-time OUA All-Star, team Rookie of the Year in 1995, team MVP in 1997 and one time All-Canadian. Pounder aided in Laurier's OUA Championship win in 1998 and graduated with a degree in Physical Education and Kinesiology. Cheryl beamed when asked to recall how Laurier women's hockey impacted her development as a player and person. "Laurier played a

huge role for me," Pounder said. "Any time you get to go to the rink everyday and practice, it's great. The whole team atmosphere was really good as well. You saw the girls you played with every day -- at the arena, at school, in class and in some cases we lived with each other -- the whole experience was just great for me... And hey, you got an education at the same time!" Outside of playing for the National team, Cheryl is in her 8th season with the Beatrice Aeros. She plays defense and serves as the assistant captain for the team. Cheryl had one goal and 15 assists in 31 games during the past season. The Beatrice Aeros continued their long winning history by winning the first ever NWHL title 1-0 against Ste. Julie Panthieres, the Esso National Championships 2-1, in overtime versus 2000 NWHL First team All-Star "Team Quebec" and the right to represent Ontario by beating the Brampton Thunder 3-2 in triple overtime. Cheryl's minor hockey career was played in Mississauga. Cheryl is a very strong skater and a force at both ends of the ice. As she continually improves her skills, she looks forward to playing a pre-dominant role in the future of Canadian Women's Hockey.
Athletic Complex upgrades continue
On a recent visit to the Athletic Complex one thing is quite evident… phase 2 has begun. From March to September 1st, 2000, the inside of the Complex is essentially being destroyed and rebuilt. Phase 1 was completed on January 1st, which saw the administration offices relocated. This new administration wing adds an improved element of prestige and professionalism. Also added were a dance/aerobic studio, an additional weight room and a squash court upgrade. These additions were well received by all athletic members with no inconveniences to them. Phase 2 is a different story. The construction is quite noticeable as there are now portable change rooms outside and a temporary wall blocking the entrance to the south side of the Complex. However, these changes will be well worth the hassles. On the main floor there will be a new Golden Hawk lounge for all athletes to use for events or relaxing. There will be a glass window overlooking the gymnasium and a concession stand accessible from inside or outside the lounge. Two classrooms will be added for kinesiology classes. The general washroom facilities will go through a much-needed upgrade. On the south side, a climbing wall will be installed for the more adventurous members. Most required, however, are the new change rooms downstairs for athletic members. These change rooms will be more practical than their old counterparts and will include individual team change rooms for both basketball and volleyball as well as one for opponents. The men’s and women’s rooms will be upgraded in size and appearance, while the Hawk Desk will be relocated to the bottom of the stairs for convenience. Air conditioning will be installed in the gym as well as dehumidification in the pool. If you have not seen the updated facilities in the Athletic Complex then please stop by for a look. The changes are a testament to this department's aspiration to supply the students and athletes with the best facilities in Canada.

Peter Campbell named Men’s Basketball Coach With the goal of building one of Canada's best interuniversity athletic programs, Laurier has taken another step closer with the addition of one of the top men's basketball coaches in the country. Following completion of a national search, Peter Campbell has been hired to lead the Laurier Golden Hawks to success on the hardwood. Campbell comes to Laurier after an outstanding career with the Laurentian Voyageurs. In a fifteen year tenure at Laurentian, Campbell led the Voyageurs to a 155-57 record, winning six OUA East titles, two Wilson Cups and making six trips to the National Championships. With the move to Laurier, Campbell will be returning to southwestern Ontario where he grew up in Woodstock, Ontario and began his university coaching career in the early eighties. "I'm excited about building a quality basketball program at Laurier," noted Campbell. "Laurier's commitment to winning is evident and I believe we can bring excitement and success to the atmosphere that has been created in their athletic program." Campbell was named the Coach of the Year six times in the OUA East and was CIAU Coach of the Year in 1997. In announcing the hire, Golden Hawks' Athletic Director, Peter Baxter, expressed his excitement about the latest addition to his coaching staff: "Coach Campbell fills the role we set out in search of. His success on the court and ability to provide leadership to student athletes is the model we were looking for." Baxter is also excited about the chance to compete at the provincial and national levels. "Campbell's record speaks for itself, and we feel he can continue that success here at Laurier. With Stu (Julius) and Campbell on board now, we expect to bring success to our Basketball program".
