Wilfrid Laurier University Golden Hawk Club

“Building Champions, Building Traditions” Volume 2, Issue 1 Message from Dr. Bob Rosehart Golden Hawks athletics has long since been part of the proud heritage of Wilfrid Laurier University. Whether you are participating as an athlete, a supporting student, alumnus or friend, your contribution to the success of our programs over the years has been much valued and appreciated. At Laurier, we believe that learning goes beyond the lecture hall and involvement in Golden Hawk athletics is a valuable leadership experience that serves our student athletes throughout their lifetime. In the past couple of years, we have by working together, developed a new spirit of enthusiasm and renewal in Golden Hawk athletics and this could not have been done without your participation and support. We have invested in new fitness equipment, renewed physical facilities and have placed a considerable focus on the recruitment of coaches and high quality student athletes with both outstanding academic and athletic credentials. The spirit of the new Hawk logo exemplifies our renewed fighting spirit and what hopes to be a great 2001/2002 season. Golden Hawk Club Mission Statement “A means of providing Alumni and Friends of Wilfrid Laurier University with an opportunity to help build the best interuniversity athletics program in Canada.”

Summer 2001

Hawks bring home gold The 2000 men’s soccer team started off their season with a dismal performance against Waterloo losing 6-1. This loss seemed to focus the Hawks as they went on an eight game unbeaten streak. A 1-0 loss in the last game of the season left the men with a sense of urgency in the playoffs. Entering the post season, the Hawks simply dominated their opponents as they rolled to an OUA Championship with 4-1, 3-0 and 3-0 victories. Winning both their round robin games earned the men’s soccer team a berth in the gold medal game against Nova Scotia's St. Mary’s Huskies. The Hawks scored the first goal of the game to take the advantage. No other goals were scored for the rest of the half and well into the second half. With minutes to go, St. Mary’s placed a strong shot at the net and tied the score, sending the game into overtime. The overtime action was thrilling with many near misses and “almost goals”, but neither team managed to score taking the game into penalty kicks. After trading goals for four kicks, Laurier Goal Keeper, Pieter Meuleman made a stunning save to give Laurier the upper hand. The pressure for the win was then placed into the hands of Kitchener native, Steve Cox. With one solid boot to the side of the net the Laurier Golden Hawk’s became national champions. The final score was 6-5.

The Golden Hawk field lacrosse team defeated Toronto for their first time ever, securing an OUA Championship.

The men's soccer team brought home CIAU Gold for the first time in Laurier men's soccer history.

The Laurier Women’s Lacrosse team finished the regular season atop the OUA West Division with a record of 9 wins, 2 losses and a tie. The Hawks went up against the York Yeowomen in the OUA Quarter Finals when goalie Arlene Stratton held her opponents pointless until late in the second half. The Hawks came out with a win as the final score was 11-2. The Semi Final game was quite similar, as the women took control and shut down the Queens Golden Gaels, 12 - 8. On a brisk, sunny Sunday afternoon Laurier took to the field against an unbeaten U of T team in the regular season and in playoffs. Laurier scored first but U of T came back with two goals before the Hawks were able to score again. The Blues led 5-2 at the twenty-minute mark. Laurier scored twice late in the half to keep the game within reach. The Hawks took the lead in the game, for the first time since the opening goal, at the twenty-minute mark but U of T notched the tying goal at 23:01. Captain and OUA MVP Emily Watson broke away from her defender and took a pass from Meaghan DeSouza to score the winning goal with 1:06 left in the game. The Hawks were able to win the draw and maintain possession of the ball for the final minute. Hawks won their first OUA Championship 10 - 9!

www. laurierathletics. com Comparable to pole vault, the world of the Internet is that of “inches”. With ever changing technologies and new conventions, the virtual bar of standards is always being thrust upward. Without perfect timing, hours of preparation and the perfect leap, a website may be left a fraction of an inch short of the bar. The result is, disaster. In order to reach the bar and serve its stakeholders better, laurierathletics.com is due for some minor renovations during the upcoming season. Plans include the implementation of stronger navigation architecture, streaming audio, and customized content. Last year laurierathletics. com underwent major graphical changes and current developers aim to add minor graphical improvements to the site over the remaining summer months. A true gauge of a website is the number of visitors it receives per day. This past season saw the website reach an all time high of 700 guests. The site also averaged 350 guests per day during the peak sports seasons. This new increased audience opens the door to increased revenue via online advertising (banner ads). If you are interested in this service, please contact Roly Webster at rwebster@wlu.ca With new goals established, the “bar” has been raised yet again. But fret not; laurierathletics.com will be ready for it’s next “leap”.

From the Athletic Director Commitment to the Student-Athlete Experience It is an enormous commitment that is given when an exceptionally talented student-athlete decides to come to Laurier, both on the part of the individual as well as his/her parents. We value the commitment they have made and in return, must Peter Baxter provide the same commitment back ensuring the quality of the student-athlete experience over the course of their years of study at WLU. That commitment requires strong coaching leadership, which in the past few years with the assistance of the Alumni through the Golden Hawk Club we have acquired. It also requires a support and guidance system unique to each athlete, that ensures the balance of his/her academic responsibilities at the highest standards while achieving excellence at the highest standards athletically. In the fall of 99, I was invited by Mike Wadsworth, then Athletic Director at the University of Notre Dame, to visit South Bend to learn about the new Life Skills Program initiated for their student-athletes. Wayne Gowing and I took up his invitation and spent two days with Notre Dame’s faculty, learning their model program for us to initiate into our Golden Hawk Athletics program. The Department of Athletics and Recreation must fit the academic mission of the university. Put simply, we teach excellence through sport and recreation. Further, we are committed to a broad-based program for men and women, which gives the support necessary to enable each student-athlete to obtain his or her full potential. Laurier Athletics contributes to the growth and development of the whole person by providing opportunities, which will advance the intellectual, physical, social, emotional, and ethical objectives of the university. Through our new Golden Hawk StudentAthlete Development program, student-athletes will receive support and guidance in an environment that demands responsibility and accountability. The Program, which is committed to empowering student-athletes to become selfsufficient, productive and responsible citizens, provides opportunities for academic, athletic,

Special

thanks to the

career, community, and personal success. This initiative is not meant to replace existing student services on campus, but rather act as an extension of these programs. In September we will hold our inaugural First-year Student-Athlete Orientation workshop conducted by many veteran varsity athletes, alumni as well as Faculty and Student Service Staff. This provides our incoming freshmen with some helpful assistance to ensure their transition to university is a smooth one. Nutrition workshops, study halls with academic skills seminars and time management techniques will all be part of this orientation. As the athlete progresses through their four years at Laurier, they will attend modules that deal with academic development, personal development such as public speaking, career development, and community service. The goal of this program is to support the total educational experience of each student-athlete with a commitment to achieving excellence academically and athletically. This program cannot be realized without support of the student-athletes themselves. Representatives from the Lettermen’s and Women’s Athletic Association as well as the WLU Student Union have been hands-on producers in the development of this program. On behalf of our current student-athletes we invite you to play a role in this initiative by "Adopting-A-Golden Hawk". The Adopt A Golden Hawk Program is more than a fundraiser, it is an opportunity for the community, a corporate friend, or an alumnus to support this initiative while maintaining a direct link with the individual student-athlete this program effects. Your $500 contribution (tax deductible) will help enhance the student-athlete experience and assist them in achieving their academic and athletic success. Invest in People, Improve the Product, and Win. The Golden Hawk Student-Athlete Development Initiative is a winning program that will help us to create winning, well-rounded student-athletes now and in the future. Your continuing support and contributions as alumni to the Golden Hawk Club are much appreciated. Without it we could not realize our vision of becoming the best university intercollegiate athletics program in Canada.

Message from Golden Hawk Club President The Golden Hawk Club was created as a means to support the continuation of the tradition and pride that we had Randy when we McGlynn a t t e n d e d W L U . Together, we have seen an athletic program that has grown and improved both on and off the field in many different areas. In an endeavour to achieve excellence in all sports, we are getting great results by facilitating good coaching and input through interaction at all decision-making levels. As you well realize, it takes our input and our money for this tradition to continue. Athletics enriches lives and enhances the university experience. It gives people an opportunity to express and challenge themselves. We need to maintain a sense of tradition, while moving forward into the future to help build the best athletic program in Canada.

Golden Hawk Alumni Golf Tournament The 11th Annual Golden Hawk Alumni Golf Tournament was played on July 7th at Doon Valley Golf Club in Kitchener. This year’s tournament honoured Barry MacLean, who currently coaches both the men’s and women’s soccer teams, and was an All-Canadian for the Hawks men’s soccer team in 1985. In 1992, Barry served as the assistant coach for the Laurier women’s team, which captured their first National Championship. He soon took over as Head Coach for the women’s team in 1995 as he directed them to their second National Championship title. In 1998, MacLean assumed the role of coaching both the men and women’s teams with the hopes of leading them both to National prominence. In 1999, Barry’s accomplishments at Laurier were recognized with his induction into the Golden Hawk Hall of Fame. This past year his men’s team won the National Crown. MacLean was also awarded WLU Coach of the Year. The "Hawkey" Hawk team of Gowing, Oke, Martindale, and Johnson took home the championship this year. Hope too see everyone again next year.

91 Vanier Team & Six Hawks To Be Keeping with the annual Homecoming tradition, the Golden Hawk Hall of Fame Dinner will take place on Friday, September 28th, 2001 at the Waterloo Inn. This year, six new members and the 1991 Golden Hawk Football Team will be inducted into the Hall of Fame: Jim Arnott played men’s hockey from 1967 to 1970. During the course of those years he was an OUAA All-Star, Team Captain, and Team MVP. Off the ice, Jim was on the Lettermen’s Executive and also won the contribution to WLU Athletics award. John Watson was a football player in the late 60s at Laurier. He was team captain on the 1968 team who won the OUAA Championships and CIAU finalists. Impressively, John was an OUAA All-Star, OUAA Hec Creighton Nominee and Team MVP. John also found time to be an important member of the Lettermen’s Executive. T a n i a Rusynyk began her soccer career at Laurier in 1987 being named Team Rookie of the Year. Tania played until 1992, and was an OWIAA AllStar and also a Laurier Athletic Achievement Award winner. Peter Gisborn rounded off his 1989 to 1994 football career being named to the All-Canadian

team in 1993. Peter was also an important member of the 1991 CIAU Championship team. Mike Maurice has definitely made his mark on the CIAU hockey circuit as he is the second leading point getter in CIAU H i s t o r y. Mike played from 1988 to 1991 and was also an OUA F i r s t -Te a m All-Star in 1989-90 as well as the OUA West Division MVP. Marc Lyons was another hockey star that played from 1987 to 1992. Inducted Into Laurier Hall Of Fame

1991 Men's Football Team 1991 Vanier Cup Season-Review from Coach Rich Newbrough One of the popular events surrounding Homecoming weekend is the Annual Hall of Fame Inductions, which will take place on Friday, September 28 at the Waterloo Inn. In addition to the outstanding players inductions, will be the induction of the 1991 Golden Hawk Football Team, our first and only national championship in football. Ten years have passed by since that memorable season and now, it is time to pay tribute to this outstanding accomplishment. A true championship team has many characteristics and now I will describe some of the special features of this team. First of all, this team was loaded with TALENT. Very talented people manned the offense, defense and special teams. Some of these individuals set records that may never be touched, some went on to play in the CFL, and many became OUA All Stars and CIAU All Canadians. Secondly, this squad had the exact CHEMISTRY needed for a championship team. The right mix of older and younger players was paramount and the various units were compatible with each other. The coaching staff cooperated fully in every instance. Many of the players exhibited a tremendous amount of GRIT and continued to play with nagging injuries. This team seemed to be DETERMINED right from the outset and overcame tremendous odds throughout the season. Finally, this team had a little LUCK that all championship teams need. The right bounce of the ball and the unconventional schedule worked to our advantage. For the first time in CIAU history, there

was a two-week gap between the semi final bowl games and the Vanier Cup, which allowed many of our injured players to get back into playing form. In my 26 years of coaching at WLU, I had the pleasure of working with some truly magnificent football teams...I can think of championship teams in ‘68, ‘72, ‘73, ’78, and 1987 as well as other teams which came close, ‘69, ‘74, ‘76, ’77 ‘79, ‘85, ‘87 ‘88, ‘92 and 1993 but in each instance, these teams probably came up short in one or two of the previously mentioned characteristics. The 1991 Hawks are planning a reunion on a truly grand scale this year during the Homecoming festivities. Many events are scheduled throughout the entire weekend. One activity will overshadow all and that will be the moment when this wonderful group of people will rightfully take their place in Laurier’s Hall of Fame. Ten years was a long wait for this honour, but I suspect that the players, now ten years older and ten years wiser will appreciate the evening a lot more. Needless to say tickets will be scarce, but if you act NOW you just might be able to take in a glorious night in our illustrious athletic history.

Vanier Cup Championship Celebration

Looking back it’s hard to believe that it was just ten years ago when Laurier captured the Vanier Cup. To eternalize this feat the 1991 Laurier Football Championship Team will be inducted into the Golden Hawk Hall of Fame. This memorable event will occur on September 27-30, this year’s Homecoming weekend. Presently in place there is a committee consisting of Coach Newbrough, Ralph Spoltore, Brent Stucke, Bill Kubas, Rienhardt Keller and Roly Webster, to put together a great celebration around the induction. Entrance into the Golden Hawk Hall of Fame is a phenomenal honour. The 1991 Team will be joining Hall of Fame football greats like running back Jim Reid, and linebacker Mike McMahon. Homecoming weekend is a time to reunite with friends, reflect on past accomplishments and celebrate with fellow Golden Hawks. Your participation in this induction will surely be unforgettable. The game promises to be exciting as the 2001 Hawks will be taking on McMaster, whom Laurier lost to in last year’s Yates Cup. The 1991 Cup Team continues to be a legacy at Laurier. Every football player that wears the purple and gold colours has dreams of once again bringing the Cup home. It would be a great honour for these players to share in this eventful weekend with those who have set the standard of play at Laurier. Come and celebrate your accomplishments at the ceremony.

Second Annual Dinner builds momentum

On Wednesday, April 25, 2001 the Second Annual Friends of Golden Hawk Football Reception and Dinner took place. The purpose of the evening was to raise funds to improve an already successful Laurier Football Program. The guest speaker was former hawk football player Paul Giannelia, President and CEO Strait Crossing Group Inc. and Strait Crossing Inc., builder of the Confederation Bridge linking P.E.I to New Brunswick. He discussed how Laurier Football had a deep and positive impact on his life. Paul also explained how the lessons learned on that football field carried over to his success in business. By the end of the night, the event had raised over twentytwo thousand dollars for Laurier Football. The money raised will be used to make purchases, which are beyond the scope of the normal operating budget. Laurier would like to extend their appreciation to all who attended this important evening. Your support is instrumental and we look forward to seeing you throughout the season. The Third Annual Friends of Golden Hawk Football Reception and Dinner date will be announced on www.laurierathletics.com in the near future.

Golden Hawks continue to excel continued from cover The women’s soccer team clinched the OUA West divisional title with an undefeated season. Lorraine Hodds was the lone goal scorer for the Hawks as they defeated the McMaster Marauders 1-0 to advance to the OUA semifinal. The women then traveled to Ottawa as they faced the Ottawa Gee Gees in the OUA semi finals. The game was extremely tight as both teams battled for the right to move on to the OUA final. Unfortunately the Hawks had a goal scored on them with only 4 minutes remaining and lost 1-0. A strong core of talented players were featured by the men's football team who ended off their season with a 7-1 record and ranked 5th best in the country. Their largest rivals, the Western Mustangs, made the trip to University Stadium to play in the OUA Semi-finals. During regular season battle, the Hawk’s won by one point on a last second touchdown. This time around things were much different as the defense dominated a 30-6 score in favour of the Hawks. The Hawks then faced a rematch against the only team that handed them a loss in the regular season, the McMaster Marauders. The first half was a back and forth battle with both sides trading possessions, but by the end of the half, the score was 13-10 in favour of the Hawks. The second half went downhill for Laurier and the Marauders capitalized on their momentum taking the score to 48 - 23 to finish the game. A year with many highs and lows was experienced by the men’s hockey team. The low was being knocked out of the playoffs by crosstown rival University of Waterloo, two games to one. A high was downing the Guelph Gryphons and Waterloo Warriors in "Mini-Series" play to earn a berth as the host for 2001 University Cup National Championship. In the first game against St. Thomas Tommies, the Hawks pulled off a huge upset winning 5-2. For a berth in the gold medal match, the Hawks could not repeat the upset and were downed 10-4 by the eventual CIAU Champs, UQTR Patriots in the second game. The women's hockey team finished first in the OUA West division with an impressive 19-3-0 record and advanced directly to the Final

four. A 3-2 victory over the Ottawa G e e - G e e ’s setup the final against the CIAU #1 ranked Varsity Blues. Toronto easily handled the Hawks, d e f e a t i n g Team Captain Lisa Backman finished them 5-0. her at Laurier ranked first in OUA & The Blues CIAU for career goals with 82 exploded with four goals in the second period, putting the game out of reach. Peter Campbell expected a challenge turning around the men’s basketball team and he got just that. The Hawks played tough against all opponents, but just couldn’t finish it in the fourth quarter ending the season with a 2-12 record. Coach Campbell in his first full year and has a chance to do some heavy recruiting to improve the men’s squad next season. At the start of the season, Coach Julius expected great things from his women’s basketball team of seven rookies, four second year players and third year captain Meaghan Oikawa. Things, however, did not go according to plan and the Hawks found themselves playing in a seemingly meaningless game against Brock, on the last day of regular season play. The women finished their season with a 4-17 record. The men’s volleyball team finished their season with a disappointing 2-12 record. A noteworthy highlight was left side hitter Mark Gatto being named a second team OUA West All-Star. Their female counterparts, ended off a successful season with a 14-4 record. In the OUA quarterfinals the Guelph Gryphons upset the second place Golden Hawks 3-2. Coach McIntyre has done a commendable job turning around the women's volleyball program and expects even bigger things next season. Other varsity team highlights include cheerleading who had an impressive showing placing 6th of 16 teams at the National Championship. Both the men’s and women’s curling teams took home bronze at the OUA Championships. In swimming, Spencer Cowan won CIAU gold in 50 & 100 m breaststroke. Tara Ross and Mike Bianci represented WLU at the CIAU Cross-Country Championships. The figure skating team had a strong showing at the OUA Championships placing fourth. Women’s tennis star Karen Ward had an impressive season notching four match wins. For the golf team, they finished second overall in the OUA Championships. The men’s rugby team finished

Meuleman Keeper for Canada This year Pieter Meuleman has accomplished more than many could ever dream of. After claiming a CIAU Championship in men’s soccer, he has added yet another accomplishment to his ever growing list. Pieter was the starting goalkeeper for the Under-20 National soccer team who played in the World Peter Meuleman Championship qualifying tournament in early March. Pieter recorded a shutout in all three games helping Canada qualify for the

Championships later this year in Argentina. The young WLU star looked confident and was very deserving of the starting position that he had earned. Pieter had a three game shutout , in the qualifying games, when he was tested midway through his third game against Jamaica. He made a spectacular diving save to keep the score even at 0-0. This was all the Canadians would need to keep the score sheet clean as they finished the tournament with a 1-0 win over Honduras and Mexico and a 0-0 tie with Jamaica. Pieter played extremely well during the World Championships, however his teammates could not seem to put the ball in the back of the net as they went 0-4-1 in tournament play. Nevertheless, it was a tremendous accomplishment and one can expect that much more is in store for this superb goalkeeper.

Life after Laurier Things have come full circle for Mike McMahon. Mike entered Waterloo Lutheran in 1966 and decided to play football for the Golden Hawks. He had a stellar career that was highlighted in 1969 when he was named First-Team AllMike McMahon Canadian linebacker. This was a historic award as Mike was the first WLU football player to be named to the All-Canadian Team. In 1969, Mike left Waterloo Lutheran to go to Western for teacher's college in pursuit of a teaching career. Mike began teaching in 1970, both on the football field and the classroom at Applewood Heights Secondary School in Mississauga. In 1975, he carried these duties to Georgetown District High School for six years. Then during 1981, Mike moved to St. Ignatius Loyola High School in Oakville. In 1984 Mike became Vice-Principal at Loyola and did not give up his duties of coaching football. Five years later, he moved again, this time as a Principal for St. Mary’s High School in Woodstock. It was here where his football coaching took a brief rest, due to the fact that there was no football team! Mike founded the first football team at St. Mary’s High School in 1993 and three years later brought the OxfordElgin Championship to Woodstock. In 2000, Mike returned to the Golden Hawks as the Defensive Junior Varsity Development coach for the men’s varsity football team. It may

have been thirty-one years that he was away from the program, but Mike has instantly contributed as an important member of the coaching staff. Ironically, Mike is coaching along side the two men who coached him, David “Tuffy” Knight and Rich Newbrough. On June 30th, 2001 Mike retired from his teaching career. However, Mike will continue to teach on the gridiron, as he will serve as Special Teams Coordinator for this upcoming football campaign.

Adopt A Golden Hawk Program

The Golden Hawks have a proud tradition of excellence and achievement in athletics, academics and within the community. Whether it be an Academic All-Canadian Award, winning league championships or providing mentorship for local KW children, the Golden Hawks lead by example. The Golden Hawks invite anyone to play a role in the student-athlete experience by “adopting” an athlete. The Adopt-A-Golden Hawk program is more than a fundraiser; it is an opportunity for the community, alumni and corporate sector to support a specific team, while at the same time becoming involved with a specific studentathlete. Laurier Athletics places a great deal of importance on the student athlete experience from year one orientation through to graduation.
