GOLDEN HAWK NEWSLETTER

“Building Champions, Building Traditions”

Volume 7, Issue 1 Message from Dr. Bob Rosehart Golden Hawk Athletics has long been part of the proud heritage of Wilfrid Laurier U n i v e r s i t y. Whether you are participating as an athlete, a supporting student, alumnus or friend, your contribution to the success of our programs over the years has been much valued and appreciated. At Laurier, we believe that learning goes beyond the lecture hall and involvement in Golden Hawk athletics is a valuable leadership experience that serves our student athletes throughout their lifetime. A new spirit of enthusiasm and renewal in Golden Hawks athletics has evolved at Laurier and this could not have been done without your participation and support. Last season was a spectacular success with winning of the Vanier Cup and with three of our other varsity teams participating in national championships. We continue to invest in new fitness equipment, renewed physical facilities and have placed a considerable emphasis on the recruitment of exceptional coaches along with high quality student athletes with both outstanding academic and athletic credentials. Fall 2007 will see the grand opening of the “new and green” Willison field, which will now be called Alumni Field. The spirit of the Hawk logo stands proud and tall and 2006/2007 promises to be an exciting season. We look forward to your participation.

Fall 2006

Golden Hawk Teams Continue to Triumph

The Men’s Football team brought the Vanier Cup back to Laurier, it’s last appearance back in 1991.

The Women’s Hockey team captured the OUA title. It was their 5th time in 8 years.

The success of the 2005-2006 Golden Hawks proved once again that Laurier continues to be elite contenders in the university varsity athlete circuit. It will be challenging to repeat the accomplishments of last season’s Golden Hawk teams, but there is a lot to look forward to this year. There have been some additions and changes in the coaching staff as well as new facilities; all of which will be expected to play a vital role as part of the Laurier Golden Hawk team. Last season was a very triumphant year for the Golden Hawks: men’s football captured the National title, while men’s curling, women’s lacrosse and women’s hockey all proved to be the best in Ontario. There are high expectations for the Golden Hawks to defend their titles, from the coaching staff and athletes alike. The men’s football team won their second OUA Championship title in a row, and captured their first National title since 1991, bringing the Vanier Cup back to Laurier for a second time. OUA Coach of the Year, Gary Jeffries, led his squad to a perfect 8-0 season, before continuing on to the provincial semi-finals and Yates Cup, where Laurier had commanding wins over McMaster (43-21) and Western (29-11), respectively. The team’s victory against Acadia (31-10) for the Uteck Bowl brought them to Ivor Wynne Stadium in Hamilton where they battled Saskatchewan for the Vanier. The Huskies were strong competitors and took a 23-15 lead in the fourth quarter at 8:14. Still trailing with only a minute left, Laurier refused to give up and with a field goal at 14:41 by Brian Devlin, the Golden Hawks won, 24-23. On the women’s side, OUA Coach of the

Year Rick Osborne led his hockey team to yet another provincial Championship title. With an improved record of 20-3-1 in regular season play compared to last season, the Lady Hawks also shutout their opponent six times throughout the year. The team headed to St. Catharines for the provincial finals where they played their semi-final game against Guelph (2-1) and final against Toronto (2-1). The victory against the Varsity Blues marked their third OUA Championship in a row and another trip to the Nationals; this time in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. Although they had wins against Dalhousie (4-1) and McGill (4-1), the Hawks were unable to defend their National title against Alberta, eventually falling 2-1 to the gold and green. This elite squad of 23 women, including eight rookies, captured a silver medal. On a different sheet of ice, the men’s curling team had a successful season with several bonspeil wins, including the OUA Championships. They started the season at the east sectional with a weekend record of 2-1, and at the divisional crossover, the Hawks were a perfect 4-0. Coach Ken McCormack led his team to victory against Queen’s for the gold medal with a score of 7-4; Laurier’s last Provincial title in men’s curling was The Men’s Curling team struck in 2002. The team gold, winning the OUA banner.

2006 Golden Hawk Hall of Fame Inductees

Wilfrid Laurier University’s Golden Hawk Hall of Fame continues to grow with a number of outstanding athletes and individuals to be inducted during Homecoming weekend festivities in September. Six athletes, each dominant in their respective sport, along with the entire 1978 football team and a former athletic director and coach will be added to the existing prominent list of heralded graduate student athletes and supporters of Laurier athletics. Peter Baxter, Director of Athletics and Recreation, said the 2006 inductees exemplify what the university is all about. “They were great students, outstanding athletes and role models for others,” said Baxter, who will be among a distinguished group highlighting the new additions at a special ceremony in the Laurier Senate and Board Chamber on Friday, September 22. “Looking back at what these Laurier graduates have accomplished, some pioneers in Laurier sports, is nothing short of excellence in sport.” This year’s inductees include athletes Lisa Backman, Tom Fuke, Pieter Meuleman, Donnie Ruiz, Andre Talbot and Emily Watson. The entire 1978 Laurier football team along with Carl Totzke in the builder category will also be honoured. The evening will be hosted local sports anchor Randy Steinman. Steinman has worked with CTV Southwestern Ontario since 1989 and has seen many Golden Hawks achieve excellence in their specific sports. Lisa Backman was a forward on the women’s hockey team from 1997-2000 and a member of the 1998-99 OUA champions. Just before graduating, she added to her accomplishments with another medal – this time an OUA bronze. A three-time OUA allstar, three times also chosen as a provincial MVP, Backman was also selected three times to the CIAU (now CIS) allstar team. And there’s more. Lisa Backman Before graduating, she won the President’s Award as the most outstanding female athlete in 2001. She continues to hold the Laurier records for points in a season (52), points in a career (134) and hat tricks in a season (5). Tom Fuke was a two-time captain of the Laurier swim team. Between 1995 and 2000,

2

Fuke piled up the medals in the pool. Three times he won gold at the OUAA (now OUA) championships, also added one silver and two bronze in his specialty event – the breaststroke. Fuke was named an OUAA all-star three times Tom Fuke and Laurier MVP on three occasions. On the academic side, he was also acclaimed as the winner of the Luke Fusco Academic Athletic Achievement Award in 1998. Fuke acquired multiple team records throughout his career in the purple and gold. They included the 200m breaststroke, 400m individual medley, and the 1,500m free style. A former National level swimmer, he twice made the top 10 at the Canadian Senior Championships including an outstanding fifth place in the 200m breaststroke in 1999. Pieter Meuleman was the goalkeeper for the men’s soccer team in 2000 and 2001. Although his stay with the Golden Hawks was short, he managed to become a key member of two National Championship Teams. In 2000, Meuleman was named Rookie of the Year three times - by the CIS, the West Division of the OUA West as well as by Laurier. Pieter Meuleman Toss in back-to-back honors as a league first team all-star. After Laurier, he went on to represent Team Canada in several tournaments in 2001 - at the Football Confederation Under-20 Youth Tournament in Victoria, B.C; the Chile International Tournament in Santiago; and the FIFA World Youth Championships in Cordoba, Argentina. Donnie Ruiz played football for the Hawks from 1997 to 2000. Although only playing in three games in his first year, Ruiz earned the starting safety job in his second season as a Golden Hawk. Starting in 1998, Ruiz was named a CIAU first team all-Canadian and OUA first team all-star for three consecutive years. He Donnie Ruiz was also the 1999 OUA Defensive MVP and a member of two teams that competed in the Yates Cup. Ruiz continues to hold the Laurier regular season interception record with 7 in 1998. After Laurier, Ruiz was drafted in the CFL playing for Ottawa and Winnipeg before moving on to his current spot with the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Andre Talbot was a wide receiver with Laurier’s football team for four years starting in 1997 and a menace to opposing defensive teams. Chosen as a CIAU first team all-Canadian and OUA first team all-star in both 1999 and 2000, Talbot was also a second team OUA Andre Talbot

all-star – but as a punt-return specialist in 1999. Talbot established records, and continues to hold the OUA record for receptions in a game (19). In the same year, he was named the Team MVP. Twice he played in the Yates Cup and for the past few years, after being drafted in the CFL, plays for the Toronto Argonauts. Emily Watson was a member of the Golden Hawk women’s field lacrosse team for two seasons. A former Laurier team captain, Watson’s leadership was instrumental in guiding the squad to a OUA league title in 2000. In her rookie season, Watson made the OUA first team all-star squad. The following year, she was named the 2000-2001 OUA West Divi- Emily Watson sion MVP and was also given the League Spirit Award. On the home-front, she was Team MVP for both seasons. After Laurier, Watson went on to represent Team Canada at the 2001 Women’s Lacrosse World Cup in High Wycombe, England where Canada placed fourth. From 1944 to 1959, Carl Totzke was a member of the Waterloo College. Starting as a student athlete from 1944 to 1947, and from 1952-1959, Carl was a Coach and the Athletic Director. As the Athletic Director, Totzke expanded from the major sports teams (football, rugby, basketball, hockey and track), to include fencing, bowling, curling, table tennis, volleyball, and golf. The women’s teams were starting to get noticed, as well as intramurals when new Carl Totzke facilities became available. Before 1958, Waterloo College was limited in the number of games the various teams could compete in. After Totzke expanded inter-university teams within Waterloo College, they did not have a league to participate in because Western, Toronto, Queen’s and McGill (considered the ‘Big 4’) did not want smaller universities in their league. Totzke played a very significant role in creating both the O.I.A.A. (Ontario Intercollegiate Athletic Association) for men, and for the women, the O.W.I.A.A. (Ontario Women’s Intercollegiate Athletic Association). The 1978 Laurier Golden Hawk Football Team won the Yates Cup, defeating the University of Western Ontario 19-14 in London. Laurier won seven of eight league games losing only to Western – then, the two-time defending Champions. But in the league final, Laurier beat Western 19-14 and advanced to meet the University of British Columbia in the Western Bowl, but lost 25-16. The 1978 team produced several all-Canadians and OUAA all-stars, as well as five players who continued with careers

in the CFL. Former team standouts Jim Reid, Jerry Gulyes and Richie Payne have already been inducted to the Golden Hawk Hall of Fame. Since 1986, when Laurier launched the Golden Hawk Hall of Fame, 105 athletes, 14 builders and 12 teams have been recognized for their brilliant performances on the field, in the gym, pool and rink, as well as their and support of Wilfrid Laurier University Athletics. Tickets for the Hall of Fame Induction Dinner are available online at www.laurierathletics.com/halloffame.

1978 Men’s Football Team - Yates Cup Champions

Together on the Journey to Excellence

While our Golden Hawks are hard at work preparing for a new season, it is important that we stop to reflect on last year’s unprecedented success. The football team’s Vanier Cup National Championship was Peter Baxter perhaps the defining event, but it was only one in a series of success stories for our teams. Our Hawks also won four OUA championships (football, women’s hockey, women’s lacrosse and men’s curling), and made CIS national tournament appearances with women’s hockey (runnerup), men’s basketball (first since 1978), men’s hockey (first since 1992), and both curling teams. Overall, our 21 teams posted a remarkable 70% winning percentage—a remarkable

achievement. The Laurier family—senior administration, faculty, staff, parents, alumni and students—all contributed to and share in these successes. Supporters of the Adopt-a-Hawk program contributed a record $88,000 to provide program enhancements for each of the teams. In March we successfully launched the Outstanding Women of Laurier event to showcase female student-athletes by raising more than $50,000 for women’s athletic programs. Finally, we are thrilled about the September opening of the $1.85 million Alumni Field, which will revolutionize Laurier’s soccer and recreation programs where Willison Field once was. All these elements continue to make Laurier a top destination for Canada’s most talented student-athletes. However, there is even more work to

be done to build on such success. In order to continue raising the bar our teams have even more ambitious goals for fundraising. I encourage you to be an active stakeholder this year. To Adopt-a-Hawk or get involved, visit us at games or at www.laurierathletics.com. On behalf of all our coaches, staff and studentathletes, thank you for the support that makes the Golden Hawk tradition what it is.

Alumni Take Lead Role In New Field

Alumni Field took shape during the summer months of 2006, and was completed in time for the fall varsity season of 2006. The field will be a recreational space for pick-up games with only intramurals and varsity soccer having scheduled time.

Students will return from their summer vacation to a transformed campus. Alumni Field, an international regulation soccer and recreational field with state-of-the-art field turf, is in the final completion stages where the dirt and mud track of Willison Field used to be. Grand opening festivities will be held in mid-September, but the nearly $2 million

project will be completed by Labour Day and ready for the soccer season. This project would not have come to fruition without strong leadership from alumni. The WLU Alumni Association, as part of a $1 million gift to the university, gave the lead gift of $500,000 to name the field. The Wilfrid Laurier University Students’ Union then pledged

their support by matching the Alumni Association’s gift. While these gifts successfully launched the campaign, an athletic alumni challenge is helping put the finishing touches on fundraising for the project. Two former Golden Hawks have seized the opportunity to challenge for alumni of the men’s and women’s soccer teams to support the project. The donors agreed to match all pledges and gifts made by soccer alumni up to a total of $100,000. Seeing the significant benefit of Alumni Field to their sport, soccer alumni have responded emphatically to the challenge. Led by several members of the inaugural Laurier men’s team from 1980, soccer alumni have raised more than $90,000 to date and are well on their way to surpassing the $100,000 goal. Laurier soccer will celebrate their achievement on Sat. Sept. 16th with an alumni game held on Alumni Field, followed by a brunch and silent auction. For more information on supporting the soccer challenge for Alumni Field or the Sept. 16th event, please contact Kent MacLennan at 519-884-0710 ext. 3177 or kmaclennan@wlu.ca.

Reviewing the Triumphs of 2005-2006

The Women’s Lacrosse team brings home their third straight OUA Championship, making the team one of the most consistently successful in Laurier’s recent history.

went onto their first ever CIS Championships in Winnipeg, but was unable to find their winning edge. The OUA Women’s Lacrosse title went to Laurier once again, for the third season in a row. Head coach Lynn Orth and her team had an undefeated 9-0-1 regular season record which left them in first in the West with 19 points, 12 points ahead of the second place team in their division. The Lady Hawks played the semi-final against Toronto winning 11-7, and went on to an 8-7 overtime victory against the Queen’s Golden Gaels. Kirsten Gerrie scored five goals including the game-winner in the Championship game and was eventually named one of the school’s rookies of the year. Other Golden Hawk teams made it to provincial and national competition in 20052006 including the women’s and men’s basketball teams, men’s hockey and women’s volleyball. On the basketball court, head coach Stu Julius led the women’s team to the OUA West final through an 11-11-0 regular season record. Their first two playoff games were wins against Western (70-67) and Brock (8372) in the West Division playoffs. Laurier faced McMaster for the West final, but was unable to beat the Marauders, ending the game 68-53. Veteran Meaghan McGrath was given first-team all-star as well as second-team all-Canadian status and was also named OUA West Player of the Year. Earlier in the season she became the OUA scoring leader with 1369 points in 85 regular season games. The men’s basketball team had a surprising playoff run. Head coach Peter Campbell brought his squad to Guelph for the OUA West quarter-final where the Hawks defeated the hosts 81-74. Laurier had another underdog win, this time against Brock (5449) in OUA quarter-final play. The win in

4

St. Catharines earned the team a berth at the National Championships in Halifax, a first in over 30 years. In the OUA West final the Hawks could not finish on top, losing 75-57 in the provincial semi-final game. The team then took their trip to the Nationals and ended up playing in two games. Their first was against the University of Cape Breton where they suffered a 62-53 defeat. To close out the tournament they faced the York Lions and defeated them 76-65, finishing 9th overall in the tournament. The men’s hockey team had a difficult road in their post season but pulled off some upsets to make an appearance at the National Championships. Bench boss Steve Martell coached his squad to a regular season record of 13 wins, 8 losses, 2 ties, and 1 overtime loss. Laurier faced their crosstown rivals, Waterloo, in the first round of the playoffs. The Hawks lost their first game (6-2), but bounced back winning the last two 5-2 and 6-4, advancing to the semis. Lakehead took the series two games to one (L 4-1, W 4-2, L 4-2) and Laurier played UQTR for the bronze. A 2-1 victory for the Hawks earned them the final OUA berth to Alberta for Nationals and playing for the Telus University Cup. Unfortunately, the Hawks lost the two games they played (McGill 4-3 OT, Alberta 8-2), but it was the first time the men’s team went to the CIS Championships since 199192. First-year Dan Ehrman played his way onto the all-rookie all-stars team, the only OUA honours for men’s hockey this past year. On the rugby field, the women’s team ended their season with 4 wins and 2 losses. This brought them to the OUA quarterfinals, where they faced Brock but lost 12-7. On the men’s side, their regular season ended in 4 wins and 4 losses. The women’s head coach Jennifer Armitage earned OUA Coach of the Year honours while four lady Hawks were on the Russell division all-star team. The volleyball court had its ups and downs this past season. The women’s team had great season with 13 wins and 6 losses. The Lady Hawks participated in the OUA Final Four after winning 3-2 against McMaster in the quarter-finals. They couldn’t beat Toronto in the semis, losing 3-2, but battled back from a significant deficit for the bronze against Ottawa, winning 3-2. The men’s program continues to rebuild - this season increasing their record to 6-14. Jean-Paul Wikerd picked up second-team all-star honours - the first for the Golden Hawk men’s volleyball program since 2001. Laurier baseball had their most successful season in the brief history of the program. Head coach Paul Reidel saw the Hawks earn a regular season record of 10 wins with 8 losses. The team qualified for the playoffs for the first time in their history although evenutally losing to Western 2-0. Women’s curling this year started off their season well, finishing 3-0 at the east

sectionals, with wins over Toronto (10-6), Trent (10-4), and Queen’s (10-9). At the divisional crossover, they were 1-3. The team finished the OUA Championships with an overall record of 1-3, their win coming against cross-town rivals Waterloo (9-2). They lost in the provincial semi-final to Queen’s 8-5. At Nationals in Winnipeg, the competition was fierce; the Hawks finished 3-2 after round robin play along with four other schools. Laurier played Alberta for the first tie-breaker and won 8-4, but could not beat Saskatchewan, falling 10-4. The soccer pitch also had its ups and downs for Laurier. The men’s team finished their season with five wins, three losses and

two ties, which was enough to see OUA playoff action. Their first game against RMC resulted in a 3-0 shutout victory but the team could not get by Carleton in the OUA semi-final losing 3-1. The women’s team had a disappointing season finishing 1-8-2 and not qualifying for the playoffs. On the green, the Laurier golf team teed off to some victories. They finished eighth in their first two tournaments, the Windsor Invitational and Laurier Invitational. However, at the Challenge Cup, the Hawks improved upon their strokes and walked away with silver. The last two tournaments did not go as well, a seventh place finish at the McMaster Invitational and 12th at the OUA Championships. In swimming, Kristy MacLennan highlighted the OUA Championships in Sudbury where she medaled three times: a gold for the 200-metre individual medley, and two bronze medals in the 100-metre fly and 200-meter fly. She also finished fourth in the 200-metre backstroke. Along with her, sophomore swimmer Hilary Jackson won bronze in the 50 -metre backstroke. On the men’s side, rookie David Hughes captured a gold medal in the 1500-metre freestyle. These three went onto compete in the CIS Championships in Quebec City. Although the team was unable to medal, Laurier had strong individual finishes. In cross-country running, Erin Fox had an outstanding season finishing ninth overall at the Western Invitational and later, sixth at the Western Open. At the OUA Championships, Erin finished 12th in the 5-km run with a time of 18:58:45. At Halifax for the CIS Championships, as the only Golden Hawk runner she finished 29th with a time of 18:10:07. continued page 7

Celebrating Outstanding Women at Laurier A student-athlete who balances varsity hockey, a demanding academic schedule and community service has been named the first outstanding woman of Laurier. Fiona Aiston received the inaugural award during a special luncheon last March. Laurier launched the Outstanding Women of Laurier award this year to recognize female students who combine athletic and academic achievement with an active commitment to leadership and the development of young athletes through community teaching or coaching. The award winner receives $1,000 and a gold pendant. “It’s an honour to be here today,” said Aiston. “I really don’t think the three of us (Aiston and her two co-nominees) are the exception. There are so many women at Laurier who exemplify what this award recognizes.” Aiston is a third-year biology student. She has twice been named an academic all-Canadian, which requires a grade point average of 80 percent or better, by Canadian Interuniversity Sport. She has played hockey since she was seven years old and was one of 40 players chosen to try out for the Team Canada under-22 hockey team in 2005. She describes the tryout as an amazing learning experience that tested her athletic abilities. Away from Laurier, Aiston volunteers with KidsAbility, a local centre that helps children with disabilities. She volunteers in the centre’s pool therapy program for children with speech problems. Aiston believes that significant physiological, psychological and social benefits can be achieved through sport and physical activity, which can positively influence women’s growth and development. “Fiona’s commitment to her sport, her studies and her community are truly representative of the qualities the Outstanding Women of Laurier award seeks to recognize,” said Peter Baxter, Laurier’s director of athletics and recreation. “She, and the two women who joined her on the shortlist, demonstrate the range of interests and abilities we encourage in all our student-athletes.” Fifteen women applied for the award and two joined Aiston as finalists. Liane Chornobay is a thirdyear honours kinesiology and physical education student who has played varsity-level field lacrosse for three years. Prior to attending Laurier, she played

at the club level with the U-20 Oshawa Lady Blue Knights team, where she was named outstanding graduating player. As a coach of athletics and recreation in her hometown community, Chornobay promotes the importance of sports involvement to young women. Meaghan McGrath, in the fourth year of kinesiology and physical education, has played on the varsity women’s basketball team for four years. For the past 12 years, she has participated on various basketball teams and, this past summer, she played on the team that represented Canada at the International University Sport Federation games in Izmir, Turkey. McGrath also helps girls between the ages of eight and 15 to develop their basketball skills at Laurier’s summer sports camp. Chornobay and McGrath also received Outstanding Women of Laurier pendants. Laurier presented the awards at a luncheon at the Waterloo Inn & Conference Centre. Pamela Wallin, whose credentials include former national journalist, current Canadian Consul General of New York and Laurier honorary-degree recipient, hosted the luncheon. Two-time Olympic gold medalist and Laurier alumnae Cheryl Pounder discussed leadership during the event’s keynote address. Event organizers hoped to raise $50,000 for female athletes at Laurier. The event exceeded expectations, raising $75,000, and prompted the committee to aim higher next year.

Staffing Changes in the Department This summer saw some changes to the Department of Athletics and Recreation. Long time administrative assistant Agnes Pitsch retired and coaches Tonya Reesor and Steve Martell stepped away from life in the purple and gold. Joining the Golden Hawk team in their places are Kelly Lee (administrative assistant), Kelly Nobes (men’s hockey head coach), Melissa Marshall (cheerleading head coach) and Rob Hazel (women’s tennis). After twenty years of working for Wilfrid Laurier University, Agnes Pitsch has retired. The front-line Golden Hawk staff joined the department in 1994 after a brief stint in the registrar’s office. Since then she has been keeping the Agnes Pitsch department in line taking care of administrators, coaches, athletes and day-to-day customers. This past April at the Golden Hawk Athletic Banquet, Agnes was given the Earle C. Shelley Unsung Hero Award for her time and effort in helping others in their pursuit of excellence as well as contributing to the overall success of the athletic program. A party was held for Agnes on June 12th where many of her friends and family were in attendance to thank her for her years of friendship and service. The department presented a travel voucher to her and her husband Rainer as a token of thanks. In her place, the new face of the department becomes Kelly Lee. Kelly was previously involved in the department as a team manager with the women’s hockey program as well as both the Students’ Union and Department of Kelly Lee Finance and Administration where she previously worked.

Stop by the office to introduce yourself to Kelly. After a nation-wide search, Laurier announced the appointment of Kelly Nobes as the head coach of the Golden Hawk Kelly Nobes men’s hockey program. Nobes replaces Steve Martell who left the Golden Hawk program at the end of last season for a teaching opportunity at Cape Breton University. Nobes comes from the Royal Military College hockey program where for the last five seasons he has led his team into the playoffs. He was a former league all-star for the McGill Redmen in the late 1990’s as well as an assistant captain. During his time with the Redmen, he placed ninth among scorers with 181 points in four seasons. After playing four seasons for the team he acted as an assistant coach for two years before moving on to RMC.
