“Building Champions, Building Traditions”
Volume 12, Issue 1 2011 marks Wilfrid Laurier University’s centennial year. In celebrating this significant milestone, we Dr. Max Blouw have taken great pride in looking back on 100 years of inspiring lives of leadership and purpose. It’s the foundation beneath our unique sense of community and the fuel that keeps our school spirit alight. Today, we continue to be inspired by new stories of Laurier students, alumni, faculty and staff members living lives that are meaningful and engaged. Laurier’s varsity athletes are no different. Our athletes embrace strong leadership values and they are driven by a deep sense of shared purpose. I see it when they wear their purple and gold with pride, and in the way they’ve inspired legions of fans over the years. This year we saw it in a successful sports season, including provincial and national championship victories for women’s curling, a women’s soccer provincial championship, a fourthstraight national cheerleading title and strong performances from women’s basketball and men’s curling. Of course, we were also delighted to host the CIS women’s hockey championship and finish with a fourth-place showing. But at Laurier, our athletes value more than their competitive performance. Golden Hawks bring home the hardware in 2010-11
Women’s Curling captured two titles in 2010-11, including the national championship in March.
The 2010-11 athletic season was another successful one for Wilfrid Laurier University as varsity student-athletes continued to represent the university well on the field of play and in the classroom. Golden Hawk team’s brought home three provincial championships and two national banners while individually, 42 Laurier student-athletes earned OUA All-Star honours and nine garnered CIS All-Canadian status. After another grueling athletic season, 45 student-athletes also earned academic honours at the OUA and CIS level. Here is a closer look at the headlines that emerged during the season. Women’s curling, to put it simply, dominated their season from start to finish. The team breezed through the round robin portion of the OUA Championship in February, posting a perfect 8-0 record to finish atop the standings. After defeating Western in the semifinals, the Golden Hawks stumbled early in the championship match against Guelph, falling behind 4-2, but stole an incredible eight points over the next three ends to earn their first provincial banner in three years. The team carried their momentum into the CIS/CCA Championship in March, once again finishing first after pool play with a 6-1 record, earning a direct trip to the championship. their opponent, the Brock Badgers, into the match as the team cruised to a 7-4 win. Head Coach Maurice Wilson earned CIS Coach of the Year honours as the Golden Hawks earned provincial and national titles in the same season for the second time in team history. The women’s soccer team nearly matched the successes of their on-ice counterparts as they appeared to be on the verge of completing a championship sweep of their own. Led by an incredibly deep and talented team that boasted eight players who earned provincial and national recognition during the year, the Golden Hawks finished first in the OUA West with an 11-1-2 record. After advancing to the OUA Championship, a strong Hawks defence, anchored by Tania Pedron and Kelsey Tikka, shutdown the top-ranked Queen’s Gaels 1-0 to win their second OUA banner in three years. The two teams who led the OUA would clash once again in the final of the CIS Championship in PEI but the Golden Hawks fell just short, losing 1-0 in extra time to deny them the national title. The fourth championship earned by Laurier in 2010-11 came from a familiar source. The women’s lacrosse team, after seeing their championship streak snapped the season before, came out of the gates with a purpose, rolling over their competition continued on page 4...
