“Building Champions, Building Traditions”

V o l u m e 15, I ss u e 1 At Laurier, we strive to inspire lives of leadership and purpose. It is a natural and authentic fit for this university, and Dr. Max Blouw it is reflected in the passionate engagement of our students, alumni, faculty and staff members. Laurier’s student athletes are a shining example of what it means to live a life of leadership and purpose and our Golden Hawks were once again a source of immense pride for the university throughout the past academic year. In addition to their highcalibre athletic performances, Laurier athletes are known for their academic achievement and tireless volunteer work. These are individuals who develop into leaders at Laurier and go on to engage meaningfully in their careers, communities and personal lives. Congratulations to all of our athletes, coaches and athletic staff for their achievements this past year; I am confident that there are many more accomplishments to come for each of you. This year we also saw the opening of the renovated Fitness Centre on the Waterloo campus, a wonderful facility for all of Laurier to enjoy. This project would not have been possible without the dedication and generosity of our students, alumni and partners. Thanks to their support, we continue continued on page 12...

Hawks Golden in 2013-14

The 2013 men’s baseball team entered Laurier history as they captured the program’s first OUA Championship in October.

The Golden Hawks had an exciting 2013-14 year featuring momentous team performances from varsity athletes and the completion of the Fitness Centre expansion project. A few notable athletic achievements this year include the first ever men’s baseball OUA Championship victory, CIS bronze medal finishes for both the men’s and women’s curling teams, the continued success of the women’s soccer team taking the OUA title again this year, the cheerleading team dominating at the national championship, and women’s hockey winning OUA gold for the 11th time. Off the court, Laurier’s studentathletes continued to excel in the classroom as 48 Hawks earned Academic honours from the OUA and CIS. In the community, the Hawks were well-represented in a number of different initiatives, highlighted by the Letterman club donating $10,000 to breast cancer research at the end of the year. Here is a closer look at your Golden Hawk successes for the 2013-14 year. The Golden Hawks started their varsity sports season with an early victory when the men’s baseball team won their first OUA banner. The Hawks were led throughout the regular season by their strong pitching staff and the same held true throughout the finals. Leadoff hitter and left fielder Daniel Murphy was named Championship MVP and finished the playoffs with a .467 batting average and scored the championship-winning run. When the men moved on to the OUA/OCAA Championship, a 12-0 blowout over St. Clair

Women’s hockey returned to the top of the OUA podium in 2013-14 as they defeated arch-rival Queen’s to win their 11th banner.

College gave the Hawks reason to hope for another Championship victory. Jordan Petruska threw a complete game shutout working 5 innings with 7 strikeouts. But the Hawks lost their 5-3 lead over St. Clair late in game two and would not recover by game three. The Hawks finished the season with the most wins in school history with 25 in 39 games played. Another big victory for Laurier came later in the season as the women’s hockey team displayed their continued dominance on the ice with an OUA Championship win over Queen’s. The women started their season strong and opened with a third place rank in Canada. Captain Laura Brooker and her teammates Tammy Freiburger and Devon Skeats led the team offensively, scoring 12, 13, and 12 goals respectively. Brooker also became the sixth athlete in Laurier history to record 100 total career points this season. Starting goalie Amanda Smith earned the 2013-14 Team Rookie of the Year for her performance between the pipes and was named OUA Athlete of the Week and Championship MVP after stopping all 77 shots she faced over the final two games of the OUA championship series. The women closed their regular season with an 18-3-3 record and went into the playoffs with a guaranteed second place finish, but the Hawks weren’t settling. The girls went for gold and fought hard to shutout Queen’s 2-0 for an 11th OUA championship win. continued on page 4...

A Message from Peter Baxter With another successful sport season now behind us in which Laurier reached our 66th OUA Championship to go along side our 13 National Championships, it seems timely to reflect on the Peter Baxter past year at Laurier Athletics and Recreation, our context, and our plans and prospects for the future. Another Year of Excellence Wilfrid Laurier University continues to be one of Canada’s finest Athletic and Recreation institutions - a fact confirmed by Canadian Intramural and Recreation Association CIRA Ontario, who awarded Laurier their Banner of Excellence for the seventh consecutive year. In addition, Laurier teams won 4 provincial OUA titles in men’s baseball, women’s soccer, women’s curling and women’s hockey and our cheerleading team won a national championship in the All Women’s University Division at the Canadian Championships. Internationally, student-athletes represented Canada at the World University Games including Laura Brooker, who won a gold medal in women’s hockey. Laurier’s 2012 CIS National Championship women’s curling team of Cheryl Kreviazuk, Laura Crocker, Jen Gates and Sarah Wilkes also competed for Canada in Italy, finishing sixth. Swimmer Chris Courtis qualified for his home country of Barbados to compete at this summer’s Commonwealth Games in Scotland and rugby’s Nathan Roberts is enlisted to compete at this year’s World University Rugby 7’s Championships in Vitoria, Brazil. Laurier Athletic Department staff Ari Grossman, Laurier Associate Director of Business Operations, was also appointed as Team Canada’s Manager of Communications for the next World University Games which will be held in Gwangju, South Korea in August of 2015. Laurier’s standing in sport and recreation has been strikingly consistent across our teams and programming. Ours is one of a handful of universities in Canada that measures up well across the spectrum of activities, sports, and leadership opportunities. This breadth and depth of excellence speaks volumes about our world-class coaches, gifted students, and dedicated staff. Our coaches and staff are a remarkably varied and energetic group, and we owe them all a huge debt of gratitude.

2

That is perhaps a useful segue to considering the variety of awards, prizes and distinctions earned by our Laurier Athletics and Recreation community— a great many of them by students which are highlighted in the contents of this newsletter. A most special achievement to be proud of is that 48 student-athletes achieved OUA and CIS Academic AllCanadian status. Laurier student-athletes collectively have a higher graduation rate than the Laurier student population not involved in varsity athletics. Match this with the 32 OUA All-star selections and 6 CIS All-Canadian honoured athletes and we truly do have exceptional people who “Inspire Lives of Leadership and Purpose!”

I am sure that your experience at Laurier was an important time in your development as a leader. Laurier needs you now to help us remain the destination of choice for top prospective studentathletes. Please consider donating to support your sport team where 100% of your donation will go to support our teams and you will be provided with a tax receipt for the full amount. With as little as $100 donated by each former athlete, this annually could raise well over $500,000 of which could help secure and enhance the student-athlete experience at Laurier. I very much hope we can count on your continued involvement and support in the years ahead.

The Landscape of University Sport in 2014-2015 and Investing in the Future The accomplishments of members of Laurier Athletics and Recreation over the past year are all the more remarkable when one considers the landscape of university sport heading into 2014-15. The economic recession has forced deep cuts to athletic and recreation programs across Canada. Laurier has not been immune to this reality. Compounding the problem, Laurier’s student population has grown to 17,000 students and the demand by all fee-paying students for programs, services and facilities are at an all-time high. The global economy is still unsettled. Universities across Canada are facing deep cuts. As a result, there are rapid changes afoot in university sport. The competition in recruiting the top gifted studentathletes has intensified. Other university alumni groups at Guelph, Queen’s and Western have stepped up to ensure that their programs have the resources to enhance these programs. There is no more important time within our history that we need our athletic alumni and supporters to step up also.

Last, on a personal note, it was a great pleasure and privilege to serve our student-athletes along with the Athletics and Recreation staff in this, my 17th season at Laurier. I am looking forward to celebrating our rich tradition of excellence and share in the history-making which, no doubt, our student-athletes and leaders will accomplish this coming season. I invite you to share that vantage point with me during the 2014-15 season.

From my perspective, our ongoing success depends on sustaining time-honoured links to our alumni, sponsors, and friends. In 2011, our Laurier students supported a referendum to fund the $5 million dollar expansion of our Fitness Centre which completed this past November. Student body investment, volunteerism, alumni donations, and corporate sponsorship have been cornerstones of the Golden Hawk tradition of excellence. Through their generosity— whether they have shared their time, their expertise, or their financial resources in whatever measure— individual students, alumni and friends, along with a range of local and national companies have helped enrich the student experience. They have helped build our buildings, mentor our students— they have built community. We are truly grateful for all this support.

Go Hawks! Sincerely, Peter Baxter M.A. Director Athletics and Recreation P.S. This fall we will be launching the opportunity to show your loyalty to Wilfrid Laurier University with the opportunity to purchase a commemorative Golden Hawk Ring. The goal of this project is to make the “Hawk Ring” a distinctive ring which ties Laurier graduates across the world. Our hope is to have the ring be awarded to students at a special ceremony each year in the spring prior to graduation and that 100% of students opt to purchase the ring. All past alumni can currently purchase the ring by visiting laurierathletics.com/ hawkring. All proceeds for the ring will go to the Athletics and Student Experience Enhancement fund to further invest in our student experience at Laurier.

2014 Golden Hawk Hall of Fame Inductees Star concluded her career in 2008-09 by winning Laurier’s President’s Award.

This fall, the Wilfrid Laurier University Golden Hawk Hall of Fame will welcome eight new members as part of the 2014 induction class. The induction ceremony is scheduled to take place on Friday, September 26 in the Senate and Board Chamber during Laurier’s annual Homecoming weekend. Cindy Eadie headlines this year’s class as one of the most decorated athletes to ever suit up in any sport for the purple and gold. The former goaltender began her career in 2001-02, Cindy Eadie winning her first of three OUA Championships and in the process was named the CIS and OUA Rookie of the Year, OUA Player of the Year, a CIS First Team All-Canadian and an OUA First Team All-Star. Three seasons later, in 2004-05, she backstopped the Hawks to their first CIS Championship, along the way collecting CIS First Team AllCanadian, OUA Player of the Year, OUA First Team All-Star and OUA Goalie of the Year recognition. Following the season, she was also recognized with Laurier’s President’s Award as the Top Female Athlete that year. Joining Eadie in representing women’s hockey this year is Andrea Bevan, a former teammate and star athlete in her own right. Winning an incredible five OUA Championships during Andrea Bevan her tenure on the blueline, Bevan started her career in 2004-05, winning the CIS Championship as a rookie while also being named to the CIS All-Rookie Team and taking home Laurier’s Rich Newbrough Rookie of the Year award. She would go on to earn CIS First Team all-Canadian honours on three different occasions, in 2006-07, 200708 and 2008-09 while also being named the OUA Player of the Year in 2006-07 and 2008-09. The three-time OUA All-

Representing men’s hockey in this year’s induction class is Mark Voakes. Suiting up for the Hawks between 2005 and 2009, he was named an OUA All-Star on two occasions, in 2006-07 and Mark Voakes 2008-09. In his final and best season with the purple and gold, Voakes was named the OUA West Most Valuable Player, a CIS First Team AllCanadian and capped off the year by taking home Laurier’s President’s Award. Since Voakes finished his time at Laurier, he has enjoyed a professional career that has seen him compete in the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL), the American Hockey League (AHL) and the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL), the top league in Germany. Moving on to curling, Hollie Nicol has the honour of being the first women’s curler to be inducted into the Hall of Fame as a member of the 2014 class. A skip with the women’s curling Hollie Nicol team over four seasons, Nicol twice guided her rink to a national championship, winning CIS gold in 2007-08 and 2008-09 while adding OUA bragging rights in 2007-08. A two-time CIS Academic All-Canadian, she was honoured with Laurier’s Outstanding Woman of Laurier Award and the Luke Fusco Academic Athletic Achievement Award to finish her career in 2008-09. Joining Nicol in representing curling in this year’s ceremony will be Paul Arkilander. Arkilander was a key member of the 2007-08 CIS Championship winning team that won Laurier’s Paul Arkilander first men’s curling national championship. A first team CIS All-Canadian and OUA All-Star that season, he also helped the team capture the OUA Championship, his second of two titles after winning provincial gold in 2005-06. The final member of this year’s athlete class is Clive Tharby who suited up for men’s football between 1986 and 1990.

A Yates Cup Champion in 1987, Tharby grew as a defensive presence throughout his career. In 1989 he was named an OUAA Second Team All-Star before putting together his best season Clive Tharby in 1990. That year he took home OUAA Defensive MVP and First Team All-Star honours en route to earning his way onto the CIAU AllCanadian first team. The 2004-05 women’s hockey teams enters the Hall of Fame 10 years removed from the season in which they captured the program’s first national championship. The Golden Hawks had little trouble in establishing themselves as the top team in the OUA that season as they cruised to a 17-2-2-1 record during the regular season. As the top seed in the OUA West division, Laurier would go on to defeat Brock and 2004-05 Women’s Hockey Toronto at the OUA Final Four tournament to capture the conference banner. At the national championship, Laurier won their pool with a pair of victories, sending them to the gold medal game. Taking on the Alberta Pandas, Laurier proved to be the superior team as they defeated Alberta 4-1 to be crowned national champions. The final member of this year’s class is Luke Fusco who enters the Hall of Fame as a builder. Since joining the Faculty of Social Work in 1973, Fusco has Luke Fusco been contributing to the success of the Athletics and Recreation Department in various capacities. The former Dean of Social Work was instrumental during his career in guiding student-athletes through the difficulties of balancing academic and athletic success. In recognition of this, the department honoured Fusco by naming an award after him that is presented each year at the athletics banquet to the male and female student-athlete who best combines academic and athletic achievement. Since retiring, he has remained active with the department, providing guidance when necessary as well as chairing the Hall of Fame committee.

Six Laurier Teams Compete in National Championships continued from cover page...

After last season’s heartbreaking loss to the Ottawa Gee-Gees in the OUA gold medal match, the women’s soccer team were also gearing up for gold this season and hit the ground running early in the year. Throughout the regular season, the Hawks never lost two consecutive games and would end their season with a 9-3-4 record. Emily Brown dominated the headlines throughout the year: a three-time Laurier Athlete of the Week, an OUA and CIS Athlete of the Week, OUA All-Star, West Division MVP and CIS All-Canadian were a few of the recognitions she received for her impressive performance as a Laurier forward. Although the Hawks did not make it past the consolation semifinal this year, the 10th place CIS rank and championship experience will be valuable with the core of the team returning next season. The Hawk women exceeded expectations in a season that was considered a “rebuilding year”, with many young players coming to the forefront and representing Laurier as a force on the pitch. There was more victory on the ice for the Golden Hawks this season when the women’s curling team went undefeated at the Brock Invitational, outscoring their opponents 39-9 over two days in total. The Hawks then went on to secure their seventh OUA title and reach a perfect 13-0 record as they ran undefeated throughout the championship. Cheryl Kreviazuk and Kerilynn Mathers were honoured as

First Team and OUA Second Team AllStars respectively after going 6-2 to capture silver at the OUA Championships. Lead Fraser Reid had an outstanding season, finishing with an OUA Second Team AllStar award and Team MVP award. The Hawk men also finished third at the Brock Invitational, the tournament that started off a medal-winning season. The Laurier cheerleading team, who are often seen on the sidelines giving their best at football games, got to celebrate on centre stage as they claimed the cheerleading national championship in the University/ College All-Girl division at the PCA Nationals this year. The Golden Hawk cheerleaders soared in both rounds of the competition posting an overall score of 442.7 to outscore Memorial, Guelph, Ryerson, Ottawa, McGill, Brock, and Western. Their win was even more impressive in that their score was the highest of any team competing, in each of the different divisions, at the event. After an extremely strong start, and indeed matching their best-ever start to a season at 9-1, the women’s basketball team went 15-7 for a third place rank in the OUA West. Laura Doyle earned 231 points this season and Lee Anna Osei led the Hawks with 81 assists and 101 total rebounds. The Hawk women went on to earn a CIS Championship berth when they defeated Carleton 70-65 in double overtime to win the OUA bronze medal. Laura Doyle was honoured as an OUA Second Team AllStar and was named team MVP, while Alexandra Spadaro was named to the OUA West Division All-Rookie Team and was team Rookie of the Year. Doreen Bonsu was a force for the Hawks this year and was recognized with the OUA West Division Tracy McLeod Award.

The women’s lacrosse team shone for Laurier this year when they captured the Women’s soccer stunned the top-ranked Western OUA bronze medal. The Hawks went Mustangs to win OUA gold in what Coach MacLean 7-5-1 in their regular season including called a “rebuilding season”. an impressive three-game win streak. The men’s basketball team also achieved a third place finish in the OUA West after they went 10-12 in their regular season. Despite being eliminated in the OUA West semifinals, the playoff run is the deepest the Hawks have made it since the 2010-11 season when they advanced to the OUA Final Four. Leading the Hawks this year with 404 points and 131 defensive rebounds was guard Max Allin who was honoured this year as an OUA First Team All-Star and finished his career fifth all-time in OUA scoring. Earning his place on the OUA West All-Rookie Team was forward Jack Simmons, who also was awarded team Rookie of the Year. Back on the soccer pitch, the Hawk men started off their season with a 1-0 win over the defending OUA champs from McMaster. From there the men battled their way through the season as they attempted to remedy last year’s inconsistent season. Forwards Adrian Bucksam and Matthew Maughn lead the way with 5 goals each followed by rookie midfielder Niklas Bauer with 4 goals. The Hawks ended their regular season with a 6-4-6 record and defeated the nationally-ranked Guelph Gryphons in the opening round of OUA playoffs. However, the men saw their season end in a 5-0 loss to the York Lions in the OUA Quarterfinals. Bauer was honoured as team Rookie of the Year while senior midfielder Donald Chmura was awarded as an OUA Second

Team All-Star for the fourth consecutive year and team MVP for the second time. The Hawks swim team had a refreshing year as they built on last season’s successes, starting with two rookies finding the podium at the OUA invitational in Guelph. Dean Bennett raced to a third place finish in the men’s 100m individual medley with a time of one minute, 1.10 seconds. The rookie swimmer earned his second bronze with the 400m freestyle relay team, finishing with a time of 3:45.93. Kaitlin Vanderbeek won a silver medal in the women’s 50m backstroke with a time of 30.93 seconds. for the Quad Meet Invitational. The 201314 Team Rookie of the Year Bennett took a first place finish in the 50m freestyle and set a new Laurier record with a time of 24.15 at the event. Vanderbeek continued to show her skill as she took the bronze medal in the 50m backstroke at the OUA championships with a 29.83 second time, less than half a second off the gold medal time, to win Laurier’s first medal at the OUA championship since 2011. Over at University Stadium, the Hawks young football team strived to come together under the leadership of the youngest coach in the nation, Michael Faulds. Although the Hawks went 1-7 in their regular season, these strong Laurier men came out determined to put up a challenge to every team they faced and succeeded. Felix Odum, Ronnie Pfeffer, and quarterback James Fracas shone for the Hawks throughout the 2013 season, but the biggest headliner of the year was running back Dillon Campbell. Campbell was the leading rusher in the OUA this season and was named an OUA Second Team All-Star and was honoured as Team MVP. He also went down in the Laurier all-time record books for his 100 yard touchdown against the Western Mustangs, the second longest in school history. Defensive back Felix Odum was also honoured as an OUA Second Team All-Star alongside linebacker Chris Ackie and Thomas Majka. Young

In indoor middle distance, Kate Cruickshank and Elliot deLange were the top runners for the Golden Hawks. Cruickshank placed 18th in the OUA women’s 600m and deLange captured 20th in the men’s 600m event.

year after her and her teammates won the OUA Bronze Medal.

Bree Chaput, a co-captain with the women’s basketball team, was awarded the 2014 Outstanding Women of Laurier award.

Chaput, a native of Guelph, Ont., was one of four nominees for this year’s award which included teammate Doreen Bonsu of Oakville, Ont., and women’s soccer players Emily Brown of Waterloo, Ont., and Kelsey Tikka of Thunder Bay, Ont. “Bree is a very deserving recipient of this award,” said Peter Baxter, Laurier’s director of Athletics and Recreation. “During her four years here at Laurier, she has epitomized what this honour represents through her work on the court, in the classroom and in the community.” Chaput, a fourth year Kinesiology and Physical Education major, becomes the second women’s basketball player to receive the award since its inception in 2006. Former Golden Hawk Jillian Ritsma was the first to do so back in 2007. “It’s such an honour and a privilege

[to win this award], especially at such an amazing institute like Laurier,” said Chaput who received her award in front of more than 250 people. “Doreen, Kelsey and Emily are all fantastic people, so just to be grouped with that group of girls and to be here today was such an honour.” A three-time CIS Academic AllCanadian, Chaput has been a versatile player for the women’s basketball team, playing four different positions over her career. She has twice helped the Golden Hawks advance to the CIS Championship, including this

This year, Chaput was the recipient of the prestigious McGraw-Hill Ryerson Student Scholarship, an award given out to just 20 university or college students across the country. The award recognizes not only academic and personal integrity, but also students’ classroom engagement and initiative. Away from the court, Chaput has volunteered with Special Olympic track and field athletes, Big Brother Big Sister Waterloo Region and has served as an Athlete Academic Success Mentor for Lauriers Athlete Academic Success Program. The event included an inspirational keynote address by Wilfrid Laurier alumna Kelly Murumets, the President and CEO of Tennis Canada and former President and CEO of ParticipACTION. The event was hosted by fellow Laurier alumna Daiene Vernile, anchor and producer for CTV Southwestern Ontario’s Provincewide.

Golden Hawks continue to make waves in the CFL The Saskatchewan Roughriders announced on January 28th, 2014 that non-import receiver Alex Anthony has re-signed with the team. Anthony, who suited up for the Hawks between 2009 and 2012, will return for his second season with the Roughriders after earning a Grey Cup ring last year. The 22-year-old played one regular season game in 2013 for the green and white, registering two receptions for 13 yards. He spent the remainder of the season on the teams practice roster. Anthony was originally picked in the 5th round (39th overall) in last season’s CFL Draft. Throughout his varsity career he totalled 47 receptions for 722 yards and seven touchdowns. Last year the Saskatchewan Roughriders were the 101st Grey Cup champions with a 45-23 victory over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Meanwhile in the east division, Wilfrid Laurier men’s football player Thomas Griffiths of Richmond Hill, Ont., has been signed as a non-import offensive lineman by the CFL’s Toronto Argonauts, the team announced on May 16th, 2014. Griffiths, who has been with the purple and gold since 2009, has used three years of eligibility in the CIS playing mainly as a defensive lineman. The business major is coming off a breakout season in which he dressed in all eight regular season games finishing with 22.5 tackles, 4.5 sacks and two knockdowns. His best game of the season came

against the Western Mustangs when he was named Laurier’s Defensive Player of the Game after recording 5.5 tackles and three sacks. For his career, the graduate of Alexander Mackenzie HS has 30.5 tackles and 7.5 sacks in 13 games played. Finally, on May 5th, 2014, Wilfrid Laurier men’s football quarterback James Fracas of Waterloo, Ont., was invited to attend the Hamilton TigerCats 2014 training camp in June.

Fracas, a graduate of Sir John A. MacDonald in Waterloo, had a breakout season behind centre for the purple and gold in his second year of eligibility. He started the Hawks’ final five games of the season, leading them to their only win of the year against the Waterloo Warriors.

The Golden Hawks’ pivot, who is entering his fourth year with the team, worked side-by-side with other TigerCats quarterbacks in meetings and on the field as part of the Canadian Football League’s (CFL) initiative to assist in the development of Canadian quarterbacks. “This was a great opportunity to learn and develop under the very knowledgeable coaching staff of the Tiger-Cats,” commented Fracas. “It was an honour to be selected to attend their training camp, and the experience will allow me to develop my skills for this upcoming OUA football season.” “We are really excited that James was asked to participate in the Ti-Cats training camp,” added Laurier head coach Michael Faulds. “This was a great opportunity for him to learn and prepare like a pro. He will enter our training camp with even more

8

confidence this August.”

In total, 7 former Laurier players began the season on CFL rosters including Justin Phillips (Ottawa), Yannick Carter (Calgary), Courtney Stephen (Hamilton), Isaac Dell (Hamilton), Shamawd Chambers (Edmonton) and Alex Anthony (Saskatchewan) and Shane Herbert (Toronto).

Courtis to swim for Barbados at Commonwwealth Games Christopher Courtis of Grand Cayman, KY, a swimmer for the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks, qualified for the 2014 Commonwealth Games at the Canadian Swimming Trials on April 3, 2014 at the Saanich Commonwealth Place. Courtis, a second year business major, achieved the feat after posting a personal best time of 27.67 in the 50m Backstroke. That time was good enough to earn him a spot on Team Barbados which will head to Glasgow, Scotland from July 23rd to August 3rd. “This is an outstanding achievement for Chris,” commented Laurier athletic director Peter Baxter. “All of Laurier will be cheering him on this summer when he competes for his home country.” Courtis becomes the first Laurier swimmer to qualify for the

Commonwealth Games and the accomplishment comes in a year in which he has had great success for the Golden Hawks. In February at the OUA Championships, the backstroke specialist set four school records, highlighted by a fifth place finish in the 50m and a ninth place finish in the 100m events. He went on to earn a pair of 15th place finishes at the CIS Championship in Toronto in both events.

Five Hawks represent Canada at 2013 Winter Universaide Five current and former Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks represented Canada at the 2013 Winter Universiade that kicked off early December in Italy. Laura Brooker of Fergus, Ont., wore the red and white with Canada’s women’s hockey team while former Hawks Laura Crocker of Scarborough, Ont., Sarah Wilkes of Scarborough, Ont., Jen Gates of Sudbury, Ont., and current Laurier studentathlete Cheryl Kreviazuk of Ottawa, donned Canada’s colours in women’s curling. Brooker and Team Canada’s women’s hockey team was among the first athletes to compete at the Games as they opened the tournament on Tuesday, December 10 and rolled to a 21-0 victory over Spain. Brooker, Laurier’s captain and first time participant at the Winter Universiade, scored Canada’s second goal just one minute and 39 seconds into the game. She would go on to tally two more times in the second period to complete the hat-trick. Brooker and her teammates continued to roll through the competition in Italy as they easily won their group and then advanced to the gold medal game with a 15-0 victory over

Japan in the semifinals. The Canadian women’s hockey team would claim its third straight Universiade title thanks to a 5-0 gold-medal win over Russia. Brooker tallied an insurance goal for the red and white in the third period to help Canada clinch the title. As for the women’s curling team, they hit the ice for their first game on Thursday, December 12 when they faced Italy. Team Canada, represented by the Golden Hawks 2012 CIS Championship rink, earned a split of their first two contests. Skip Laura Crocker of Scarborough, Ont., and her rink defeated Italy 8-1 before dropping a tough 9-2 decision to Sweden. Crocker and her rink dropped their second straight decision as they fell 10-2 to Switzerland on day two. Needing a win against the Koreans to have a chance at a tiebreaker, Canada jumped out to an early 1-0 lead. However, Korea would score six straight points to take control of the match. Despite the deficit, Crocker and her rink battled back to make the score 6-4 after seven ends but in the end, could not find a way to come home with a win, losing 9-5. Canada finished the tournament in sixth place with a record of four wins and five losses. The 26th edition of the winter university games featured Canada’s largest delegation ever as 107 student-athletes from across the country competed from December 10 to 21.

Three Hawks shine at East West Bowl

Three members of the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks men’s football team played starring roles for the West at the 2014 East West Bowl, presented by Under Armour, at TD Stadium on the campus of Western University. Dillon Campbell of Whitby, Ont., Chris Ackie of Cambridge, Ont., and Ese Mrabure-Ajufo of Mississauga, Ont., who suited up for the West, were able to demonstrate to the CFL scouts their range of talent in a 19-12 loss to the East. Campbell, the OUA’s leading rusher last season, posted the highest rushing average of any running back in the game as he

ran three times for 21 yards. Meanwhile, on the defensive side of the ball, Ackie posted the third most tackles for the West with four while contributing a pass breakup, and MrabureAjufo demonstrated his ability to get into the backfield by recording one tackle for a loss of six yards. Despite the efforts of the three Golden Hawks, the West suffered its fourth loss in the last five years to the East as their counterparts took advantage of three interceptions and a strong kicking performance from Ryan Begin of the Acadia Axemen.

Whelan selected for Team Canada at World Cheerleading Championships Courtney Whelan of Mississauga, Ont., a member of the Wilfrid Whelan was selected for the team based on the strength of her Laurier Golden Hawks cheerleading team, was selected to join skills, such as tumbling, stunting and jumps, as well as her Team Canada at the ICU World Cheerleading Championship experience as a cheerleader. in April. Team Canada finished in fourth place in the All-Girl Premier behind third place finishers Finland. Competing with the All Girl Level 6 team from April 24-25, Whelan and Team Canada competed against squads from the United States, Norway, Mexico, Chile and Japan at Walt Disney World’s Wide World of Sports in Orlando, Florida. “Courtney is such an amazing athlete to coach. She is an allaround athlete, an excellent student, and a dependable person you can count on when it matters,” said Wilfrid Laurier head coach Jennifer Louth on Whelan’s selection. “She has so much passion for the sport and I know she will be an amazing representative not only for the university but the country as well. We are so proud of her and can’t wait to cheer her on this spring!”

Athletic Complex Grand Opening Wilfrid Laurier Athletics and Recreation officially unveiled on Wednesday afternoon the $5 million renovation to its Fitness Centre in a ceremony held at the Athletic Complex in front of a large group of students, faculty and staff. The renovation more than doubles the size of the original Fitness Centre, constructed in 2005, thanks to the addition of a second floor. As well, a new main entrance to the Athletic Complex makes it a social destination for the Laurier community and features a large mural highlighting the history of Athletics and Recreation at the University. The additions bring the total size of the building to more than 20,000 square feet. Laurier students were major supporters of the renovation, contributing the $5 million through a student referendum in 2010. “This expansion has been generously funded by the Laurier students and demonstrates tremendous leadership on their part,” commented Peter Baxter, the Director of Athletics and Recreation. “As the university has grown, so has the demand for providing students access to health and wellness opportunities. This pushed our old facility to the limits of its capacity and by doubling the space, it allows all of our users to continue to enjoy their experience.” The expansion features a dramatic increase in the amount of space for the cardio, strength training and stretching zones in the facility while also adding room for TRX Training. It also increases the existing space for free weights by more than 30 percent.

In order to fill the added space in the building, the Department of Athletics and Recreation purchased nearly $800,000 worth of new equipment. Included in the new equipment purchases are improved cardio equipment, two full sets of circuit training machines, free weights, stretching and core training equipment along with the new TRX training system. In addition, the updated facility features a divisible exercise area that will allow for circuit training, personal or group training and womens-only workout times. “By providing a number of different workout options, we believe that this expansion reduces the waiting time for equipment while also providing a welcoming atmosphere for all of our constituents,” continued Baxter. “Users are able to move through the facility with greater ease in a space that is very welcoming to everyone.”
