many encouraging moments in the early season on the ice and the team remains in the hunt for the lead in our division. Your ongoing interest, participation and support has and continues to be very important to the success of our student athletes."

Message from Peter Baxter

"In the off-season Head Coach Steve Martell worked exceptionally hard building the hockey program with the goal to compete on the national level. Recruiting trips to Quebec, Maritimes and Western Canada have achieved results. Coach Martell has added experience to his coaching staff by hiring former Waterloo Siskin Coaches Dave Officer and Doug Carmichael. Our Department of Athletics staff is committed to assisting the Hockey Alumni Executive with events such as the Hockey Alumni Weekend, February 4, 2006 and the Golf Tournament in the summer. Please visit our website to not only follow the Hawks but to check out upcoming Alumni Events. Your participation and support of these events will assist Coach Martell and our hockey student-athletes in our goal to compete at the highest level. Thank you in advance for your support! Go Hawks!"

Mid Season 2005-06

Laurier Hockey Embraces Championship Look of the 80s In an effort to rekindle the champion-ship persona of Laurier Hockey, Head Coach - Steve Martell and the Athletic Department have re-invested in the former championship tradition of the early eighties. Specifically, the program has decided to capture the look and feel of the 1982-83 championship winning team by adopting the look and style of their OUA championship. The 1982-83 Golden Hawks, which complied a 19-4-1 regular season record and were named OUA champions, are considered one of the best teams in Laurier Hockey history. Significant alumni such as Tony Martindale, Rob Deutschmann, Kevin Casey, Wayne Gowing, Steve Bienkowski, Terry Thompson and Dave Bogart were all members of the 82-83-championship team. In addition, the new “old” look also respectfully embraces the championship winning teams of the 1987-

88 and 1988-89 seasons. In both years, Laurier Hockey complied a 13-10-3 and a 19-4 regular season records, respectfully. The

2005-06 version of the Laurier Golden Hawks are looking to once again re-capture the OUA crown. Coach Martell is looking to better the 12-10-2 record of the 2005 season and hopes that the re-emphasis on the winning tradition exemplifies our past in order to help fuel the present. “We

have had some great teams here in the past. This is to simply acknowledge and recognize some our more significant teams and what they have done for the program. In the past few years, I am confident that Laurier Hockey has taken significant steps to once again be one of the most dominant programs in the country. Tradition cannot be ignored. The re-adoption of our older look is simply a statement of thanks to our former championship winning teams and will signify to our current class the responsibility of representing Laurier Hockey.”

Message from HAC President:

The objectives of the WLU Hawkey Alumni Club are contained in its constitution and include the organization of events to encourage alumni participation and interaction. It also states as an objective to create and maintain a means for alumni to make a financial contribution to the development and support of the hockey team. Our ultimate goal is to make a difference in the advancement of the hockey team to a National Championship. Thanks to the hard work of the club’s executive and the enormous support of the alumni we are well on our way to achieving these goals. Since our inception in 2003 we have organized four successful events and managed to financially assist in acquiring skates for the team members and have made inroads in establishing endowment funds that will benefit the team in years to come. We have raised almost $10,000 in the operating endowment fund and $30,000 in the awards endowment fund. We will be presenting our first award from this later fund at the Alumni Weekend in February. On behalf of the Hawkey Alumni Club and its executive I would like to thank each of you for your support and I look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events.
