The Hawkey Alumni Club has played a significant role in the success of this program by financially supporting some of the efforts needed to sustain the competitive level this program has seen in recent years. To reach it’s ultimate goal, we’ll have to continue to raise the bar. This is a team that you’ll want to see. They are fast, skilled, offensive, and play an entertaining style.

Jersey Presentation Luncheon

The second annual jersey presentation luncheon took place on campus on Saturday October 10th. Hosted by the Hawkey Alumni Club, the event is held to welcome new team members into the Golden Hawk hockey family. There was a good turnout for this event as over 55 people including current team members, family, friends and several hockey alumni attended. They watched as veteran players and alumni introduced the first year players. Also in attendance to bring special greetings were Laurier Dean of Students, David McMurray and Director of Athletics & Recreation, Peter Baxter. Both highlighted the role that men’s hockey plays at Laurier and its importance to the university community. Dean McMurray spoke about the pride that comes with being a member of this team. Head Coach Kelly Nobes talked about the upcoming season and the high expectations he has for this team. Mark Pederson also brought greetings from the Hawkey Alumni Executive. At the conclusion of the luncheon, everyone was invited to attend an evening game at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex as the Hawks hosted the UOIT Ridgebacks. The Hawks were able to defeat the Ridgebacks by a score of 4-3. This event will continue to grow and we look forward to having more alumni join us to welcome new Hawks into the family.

Coaches Corner with Kelly Nobes Dear Golden Hawk Alumni and Friends,

Kelly Nobes

On behalf of the current team and coaching staff I’d like to thank you for your continued support of the Golden Hawks. We added some key personnel this summer and they have played a vital role in our success thus far. We also added blueliner Zack Shepley for the second half. Zack played four seasons for Plymouth and Brampton of the Ontario Hockey League. He will add size and defensive stability to our D-core. Your continued support allows us to recruit high quality players and character guys. The team had a solid first half in the win-loss column at 12-4-1, averaged five goals per game, and had the most prolific powerplay in the league operating at close to 30%. This was not an easy task as the league continues to improve and we had our toughest schedule of recent memory including a road trip to Thunder Bay for a twogamer with Lakehead, followed two weeks later with a Ottawa (Carleton) – North Bay (Nipissing) swing. We are playing with a new schedule this year which has nine teams in the OUA West and 10 teams in the OUA East. We have approx three games with each of the teams in

2

the West and cross-over for four games with four teams in the East. This year for our cross-over games we played the top four teams in the OUA East (McGill, UQTR, Carleton, and Nipissing) when we played them in November. The playoff structure has also changed in that the top eight teams in the West make the playoffs and there are no first round byes (which we have received two out of the last three years), the first round would see 1 play 8, 2 vs 7, 3 vs 6, and 4 vs 5. We are currently sitting in second place and are looking to have another solid half and prepare ourselves for what will be a very competitive playoff run. Our executive continues to do an outstanding job of executing our four main events (Golf Tournament, Jersey Presentation, Alumni Weekend, and Graduating Player Dinner) and this years Alumni Weekend will be the best yet. Hope to see you on the 30th! Go Hawks Kelly Nobes

Message from the Hawkey Alumni Club President

Time has flown by since the summer golf tournament and we are already at the halfway mark of the 09-10 season. The men’s hockey program continues to be a nationally ranked team at #9 in the top 10 but the road to the University Cup will be ultra competitive as Western, Lakehead, McGill and UQTR also occupy spots in the national rankings. The consistent support of our alumni base over the past several years has been a key factor in how competitive this program has become on a year in and year out basis. I am also starting to see alumni support manifest itself in other ways. Many graduating players have now started to reach out to the alumni base for advice and mentorship as they begin to pursue careers after hockey. This is one of those intangible benefits resulting from the past 7 years of initiatives that have provided our alumni with the opportunity support and interact with current players. Whether it is through our Hawkey Alumni Club Award, personal donations, fundraising at the Alumni Weekend and the Golf Tournament or through supporting the Year End Dinner and Jersey Presentation Luncheon, the players see and appreciate the support and are aware of the alumni presence more than ever before. This doesn’t necessarily show up in the dollars and cents column now but it will! The future health of the men’s hockey program depends on the affinity that we are cultivating Goals Penalties among current players. It’s the kind of affinity Player G Player M that causes them to pick up the phone or email Paul Bradley 13 Mike Gauthier 48 a fellow alumnus after graduating and ask for Jean-Michel Rizk 12 Kyle Van De Bospoort 44 help and it is the kind of affinity that will bring Ryan Bellows 10 Mitchell Good 28 them back to our events to reunite with their Jeff Borrows 8 Clinton Pettapiece 24 former teammates and support the program for Jason Bergeron 6 Jason Bergeron 20 years to come. Hawkey Reunion – That 70’s Show As you may know, there have been a couple of reunions of Laurier hockey teams over the past few years. As a result, I’ve been asked this year to help organize a reunion of all of the teams that played in the 70’s – dubbed ‘That 70’s Show’. I joined the Hawkey Alumni Organization a couple of years ago and now I’ve gotten myself into the thick of it. So here’s the scoop. We’re holding a reunion of all guys that played at any time in the 70’s – or before – so yeah that includes really old guys like Joe McCrea and Jake Arnott (and I think some guys are even older that if that’s possible!) It also includes anyone that played in any year in the 1970’s so we’re trying to make this a big bash! The main focus of the reunion will be the Saturday, January 30th but we’re hoping several guys can make it on the Friday night as well. Activities will include: Friday night pub tour by bus – yes, laughs are guaranteed! Saturday – Pre-game Breakfast of Champions Saturday – Alumni game – Choices: A) Play or B) Watch and laugh Saturday – Alumni Dinner (all Alumni with special ‘That 70’s Show Presentations’) Saturday – Hawks play U of W (a beat down for sure) Saturday – Post game review – location to be determined Sunday – Breakfast - and see ya later If at all possible, please respond directly to me via email at dschooley@schooleymitchell.com to let me know you can attend all or part

of the weekend. Please let me know regrets as well via email. The more the merrier! Dennis Schooley ‘75 Hawkey Alumni Club Executive
