GOLDEN HAWK NEWSLETTER

“Building Champions, Building Traditions”

VOLUME 14, ISSUE 1 Summer is an excellent time to reflect on the inspiring achievements of Laurier’s Golden Hawk varsity athletes during the Dr. Max Blouw last academic year, and to look forward to new leadership opportunities ahead. Each year, I am amazed at the dedication and achievement of our athletes. This past year we saw an outstanding performance by the women’s soccer team, which won an OUA silver medal and competed in its third consecutive CIS championship. Three Laurier students won OUA MVP awards in soccer, lacrosse, and hockey, and many more earned academic awards for high standing. Wearing their purple and gold with pride, our athletes are true leaders who continue to inspire the entire Laurier community. These are individuals who not only achieve academic success, but who also go on to engage meaningfully in their careers, communities and personal lives. Looking ahead, we greatly appreciate the leadership of our new head football coach, Michael Faulds. His vision for the future of the Golden Hawk football program will certainly inspire leadership and purpose among our student-athletes in the upcoming year. continued on page 9...

SUMMER 2013

Individual performances highlight 2012-13

Men’s hockey goaltender Ryan Daniels became the first Laurier netminder in 29 years to be named a CIS AllCanadian.

2012-13 was a big year for outstanding individual performances from Laurier student-athletes. Three Golden Hawks finished atop the CIS leaderboard for statistical performance, all earning national recognition, while two other Hawks also garnered national honours for this efforts over the course of the season. Laurier student-athletes also continued to excel in the classroom as 10 percent of the roughly 450 athletes earned Academic honours, either at the provincial or national level. Adding to the excitement this past year was the start of construction on the expansion of the Athletic Complex Fitness Centre, which will provide students and student-athletes alike a facility that will allow them to be healthy and continue to build on this year’s strong athletic performances. With that in mind, we now take a closer look at what made headlines over the past 365 days for each varsity team. For the third consecutive season, the women’s soccer team made noise across the country. Counted out in the beginning of the season as a rebuilding club, the Hawks took control of the OUA West division early on and never looked back. Led by OUA MVP and the country’s leading goal scorer Emily Brown, the purple and gold posted an 11-2-3 regular season record while leading their division in goals with 35. Playoff wins over Guelph and Queen’s gave

the team another appearance in the OUA Championship game, eventually falling short to the undefeated Ottawa Gee-Gees. However, the team did qualify for the third straight CIS Championship, competing against Canada’s best in Victoria. The young squad gave a strong effort but fell short to the eventual gold medalists from Trinity Western in the quarter-finals. Both Brown and defender Kelsey Tikka earned themselves CIS All-Canadian honours while Krista Cellucci and rookie Katie Bishop joined them as OUA All-Stars. On the ice, men’s hockey had a strong season thanks to some excellent goaltending provided by Ryan Daniels. After a slow start to the year which saw them sitting last in their division in December, the Hawks put together an impressive run in the second half of the season. With only four seniors in their lineup, Laurier posted a 9-3-0 record to close out the regular season, vaulting them from ninth in the OUA West division to fifth. Included in the run were impressive victories over Western, ending the Mustangs 15-game winning streak, Waterloo, Windsor and Guelph. Laurier would face the Gryphons in the opening round of the playoffs and took Guelph to overtime in the third and deciding game. However, they could not pull out the win and were eliminated from the postseason. Daniels proved his worth to the Hawks continued on page 4...

A Message from Peter Baxter Each and every year, I’m continually amazed at what we as an Athletics and Recreation department can achieve, from our staff to our coaches and our student-athletes, and the 2012-13 season was no different. The Peter Baxter successes we have had both on and off the field made this an exciting season and I would like to bring attention to some of those successes we have had and are looking forward to enjoying in the near future. In September, Laurier’s 15,000 students on the Waterloo campus will be welcomed into the newly expanded, 20,000 square foot Laurier Fitness Centre, which effectively doubles our space. Highlights of the expanded space, thanks to a $5 million dollar gift from the Laurier student body, include $400,000 in new cardio and strength machines, an expanded free weight training area with six platforms for high performance training, two new dance/fitness studios, and a dedicated fitness assessment room. The generosity of our students is both heartwarming and inspiring. Last fall, head coach Gary Jeffries stepped down after 31 years of service with the basketball and football program, highlighted by his team’s 2005 Vanier Cup win in men’s football. On behalf of the many student-athletes and student-leaders with-

in the Athletics and Recreation program he influenced, we thank him sincerely for the difference he made in their lives. After a national search, a new leadership team was established to carry on Laurier’s tradition as a nationally recognized high performance football program. In January, Michael Faulds was named Laurier’s new Manager of Football Operations and Head Coach. Faulds, a former Hec Creighton nominee and current CIS career passing record holder, served as offensive coordinator for the York Lions for the past three seasons. He masterminded the rapid succession of a York program that had gone from 26th in the country in yardage per game to seventh during his time with the Lions Also, we appointed Ron VanMoerkerke as Associate Head Coach and Defensive Coordinator. VanMoerkerke, who has spent 12 years with the team’s coaching staff, including the last nine as Defensive Coordinator, is assisting Faulds with a number of matters related to the football operations. Last season coach Barry MacLean’s women’s soccer team qualified for its third CIS National Championship in a row and its fourth in five years. This is a remarkable achievement considering the level of competition to surpass in Ontario alone. In men’s hockey, coach Greg Puhalski earned Coach of the Year honours in the OUA

West and I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the accomplishment of our men’s basketball coach Peter Campbell. This past June, Campbell was appointed a mentor coach by Basketball Canada for the cadet (U16) men’s national team that won silver in Uruguay. Finally, Laurier student-athlete Kelsey Tikka was a member of the World University Games women’s soccer team that competed in July in Kazan, Russia. Ongoing success depends on sustaining our honoured links to alumni, sponsors, and friends. Enriching the student-athlete experience in a period of financial restraint at universities across Ontario requires the generosity of volunteerism, philanthropy, corporate sponsorship, alumni and friends. This support helps us maintain Laurier’s tradition of excellence and is something for which we are extremely grateful. I very much hope for your continued involvement and support in the years ahead. Go HAWKS Go! See you in the stands! Sincerely,

Peter Baxter, MA Director, Athletics & Recreation

2013 Golden Hawk Hall of Fame Inductees Recording 60.5 tackles in 2007, third-best in Hawks’ history, Maggiacomo would go on to earn CIS Second Team AllCanadian and OUA First Team All-Star honours, the OUA President’s Trophy for Outstanding Stand-Up Defensive Player as well as Laurier’s President’s Award as the top male athlete.

This fall, the Wilfrid Laurier University Golden Hawk Hall of Fame will welcome seven new members as part of the 2013 induction class. The induction ceremony is scheduled to take place on Friday, September 27 in the Senate and Board Chamber. During Homecoming weekend, five athletes, one team and one builder will have their names etched into Golden Hawks history. This year’s athlete inductees include three former members of the football team, Brian Devlin, Anthony Maggiacomo and Scott Evans, along with women’s lacrosse’s Erica Howard and men’s curling’s Bill Francis. In the Teams category, the 2001-02 women’s hockey team will be honoured while Dean Boles will be recognized in the Builders category. Devlin was a kicker for the Golden Hawks from 2003 until 2005 and is best known for being the player who helped clinch Laurier its second Vanier Cup title when he kicked the game-winning field goal Brian Devlin against Saskatchewan. A two-time Yates Cup Champion, Devlin was honoured as a CIS Second Team All-Canadian in 2005 as well as earning both first and second team OUA All-Star awards the same season for both his place kicking and punting abilities. Despite playing for just three seasons with the Hawks, Devlin ranks fourth all-time for career kickoff yards and seventh all-time for career punting yards. Maggiacomo suited up for Laurier from 2003 until 2007 as a linebacker. Also a member of the Golden Hawks 2005 Vanier Cup championship squad and a two-time Yates Cup winner, he Anthony produced one of the best Maggiacomo defensive performances in team history in his final year at Laurier.

Evans was an offensive lineman for the Golden Hawks between 2003 and 2008. A Vanier Cup and Yates Cup champion in 2005, he was a force in the trenches for Laurier, earning OUA First Team Scott Evans All-Star honours three times, in 2006, 2007 and 2008 as well as CIS Second Team All-Canadian honours in 2006 and 2008. In 2007, he was also named as the OUA and CIS winner of the J.P. Metras Trophy for Lineman of the Year as well as a CIS First Team AllCanadian. In her four years at Laurier, Howard played a pivotal part in the Hawks success as she won four OUA championships at the attacker position from 2003 until 2006. An OUA First Team All-Star Erica Howard from 2004 until 2006, she was also named the conference’s Most Valuable Player in 2004 when she finished fifth in league scoring with 21 goals and nine assists to help lead the Hawks to an undefeated record. She becomes the first women’s lacrosse player to enter the Hall of Fame since Emily Watson was inducted back in 2006. Francis is the final athlete to be inducted in this year’s class. A member of the men’s curling team from 2003-04 until 200708, he was instrumental in helping Laurier win its first CIS Championship Bill Francis in his final year, while also winning the OUA Championship in 2007-08 as well as 2005-06. Francis was named an OUA First Team All-Star and a CIS Academic All-Canadian in 200708 and represented Canada at the FISU Games in 2009 in Harbin, China where he and his Laurier teammates finished sixth. With his induction, Francis becomes the first men’s curling athlete to enter the Hall of Fame.

The 2001-02 women’s hockey team enters the Hall of Fame with the distinction of being the first Laurier women’s hockey team to medal at the CIS Championship. After posting an unblemished 19-01 record during the regular season, the Hawks would knock off Queen’s in the OUA Semifinals b e f o r e dethroning 2001-02 Women’s Hockey t h e Toronto Varsity Blues to win the OUA Championship. At the national championship in Regina, Laurier won both of their round-robin pool games over St. Francis Xavier and the Regina Cougars to earn a berth in the gold medal game. However, their run to a CIS Championship was halted by the Alberta Pandas as Laurier finished the year with a CIS silver medal. The team was led that season by rookie goaltender Cindy Eadie who was named the OUA Most Valuable Player and the CIS Rookie of the Year. Alison Goodman was also instrumental to the team’s success as she was named a CIS AllCanadian while Kate MacNamara and Jacqueline Grahek took home OUA AllStar awards. Boles, who enters the Hall of Fame as a builder, served as the head coach of Laurier’s swim team for 22 years. A three time OUA Coach of the Year, Boles was also honoured with the Tuffy Knight Dean Boles Award in 2009-10 as well as the 3M Coach of the Year back in 2000. As well, during his time at Laurier, he coached Canadian athletes to four different Olympic Games from 1996 to 2008. However, one of Boles’ biggest contributions during his time at Laurier came in 2008 when Laurier’s pool was under threat of being closed due to extensive renovation costs. Through the efforts of Boles, the pool was saved after necessary funds were raised thanks to partnerships being formed with the Kitchener-Waterloo aquatic community, including the Region of Waterloo (ROW) swim club, as well as the municipal, provincial and federal governments.

in three games. Brooker provided one of the season highlights for the purple and gold as she became the fourth women’s hockey player to eclipse the 50 goal mark late in the year in just her third season. On the gridiron, Laurier had an up-and-down season. After dropping their first two contests of the year, the Hawks rebounded with exciting wins over York and Ottawa. The win over the Lions also saw OUA First Team AllStar Mitchell Bosch set the team record for career tackles and gave Laurier momentum heading into Homecoming. Taking on a tough Gryphons squad, the young Hawks battled with the eventual Yates Cup finalists but came up just short, losing 22-19. After a shutout win against Waterloo, Laurier held on to the sixth and final playoff spot despite seasonending losses to Western and McMaster. Heavy underdogs playing on the road against Queen’s, an inexperienced squad lost out to the host Gaels, ending their championship hopes. Following the season, Head Coach Gary Jeffries stepped down as the team’s bench boss, paving the way for Michael Faulds to take over the reins. Back on the pitch, the men’s soccer team provided the Hawks with one of their most memorable moments of the season. Another team boasting a young lineup, the purple and gold burst out of the gates as they owned a 4-1-2 record at the halfway point of the year and despite a tough second half, Laurier held on to return to the playoffs after missing the previous season. Facing the third-seeded Western Mustangs in the opening round, the Hawks pulled off the school’s most unlikely win of the season. Head Coach Greg Puhalski was named the OUA West Coach of the Year while defenceman Derek Holden was named to the AllRookie Team. Moving to men’s basketball, the 201213 season turned into the Max Allin and Will Coulthard show. With eight rookies on the roster, these two veterans led the way for the Hawks, guiding the team to an 8-13 record and fourth place in the OUA West division. Allin finished the year as the leading scorer in the country, averaging over 23 points per game. His numbers included a record-setting performance where he set the modernday team record for points in a game, with 43, against Guelph in January. For his efforts, he became the sixth Golden Hawk to be named a CIS All-Canadian. As for Coulthard, he finished the year fourth in the OUA in scoring thanks to his impressive three-point shooting skills. However, Allin and Coulthard couldn’t get the purple and gold past the first round of the playoffs as they lost a hard-fought game to Brock. After winning the OUA Championship the previous season,

including Renee Dijk, Veronica DavisFreeman, Chris Courtis and Luke Summerhayes. At nationals, Dijk was the story for Laurier as she claimed all 26 of the Hawks’ team points thanks to 8th, 9th and 11th place finished in the 50m, 100m and 200m Backstroke respectively. Women’s basketball found themselves in a tough battle throughout the course of their season. Playing in a number of close games in a tough OUA West division, the Hawks relied on the play of senior Amber Hillis and OUA West All-Rookie team member Kaitlyn Schenck to guide them to a winning record and fifth place in the division. Another tough game faced the Hawks as they opened the playoffs on the road. Laurier showed resiliency throughout the contest but could not overcome the hometown Western Mustangs as they bowed out of the playoffs. Following the season, Hillis would make team history as the graduating senior won the CIS Tracy McLeod award for perserverance and determination, becoming the first Laurier player to ever earn the honour. Following a disappointing finish to their season in 2011-12, the women’s lacrosse team was looking to rebound with a strong year. The team got off to a great start and carried that momentum

over the course of the regular season to finish the year with a 9-2-1 mark. A big win in the OUA Quarter-finals had the team looking like championshipcontenders but a pair of heartbreaking losses to round out the playoffs left the team in fourth place. Two athletes were honoured after the season as goalkeeper Hanna Burnett took home OUA Defensive Most Valuable Player honours while Jory Garibaldi was named an OUA All-Star. For the Laurier curling teams, the 2012-13 season saw both success and struggles as the teams saw additions to their ranks. The women’s team had

three new faces in their foursome while the men’s team had a revamped lineup. Both teams started the year strong by winning the UOIT bonspiel in November and went into the OUA Championships as potential medal favourites as the hosts. However, each team suffered an uncharacteristic loss in the round robin which denied them the opportunity to compete for the OUA banner. Despite an uncharacteristic finish to the season, both men’s and women’s teams gained important experience at the provincial and national level. For the women, skip Carly Howard and vice Kerilynn Mathers finished second at the Ontario junior championship while men’s skip Aaron Squires won the Ontario junior title and represented the province at the Canadian championships where he finished fourth. On the diamond, men’s baseball started their year off on a high note by capturing the Brock Invitational tournament for the second straight season. In OUA play, the Hawks overcame a tough schedule to start the year and stayed in the hunt for a playoff spot up until the final game of the season. Laurier would fall just short though, missing out on the playoffs by one game. It was a similar story for the men’s golf team in 2012-13 as the Hawks got

and fourth at Waterloo. At the OUA Championships, Ikram led the men’s team to a ninth place finish while rookie Karen Thompson was the women’s top finisher, helping the team place 13th. On the rugby pitch, the men’s and women’s teams both had tough seasons. The women went winless through their first five games but were still in a battle for a playoff spot in their final match against Brock. Outstanding Women of Laurier Award

Fiona Lester, captain of the Golden Hawks women’s hockey team, was named the 2013 Outstanding Woman of Laurier. Lester received the award in March during a luncheon at the Waterloo Inn Conference Hotel.

Outside of school Lester has been active in a wide variety of ways including working as a counselor and instructor for the Laurier Girls Hockey. She has also spent time working as a supervisor with the Ontario Ranger Program at the Killarney Camp.

Lester, a Peterborough, Ontario native, is finishing her Laurier career after spending four years in the Biology program while also pursuing a double major in Math. She has had an outstanding academic record earning three consecutive CIS Academic All-Canadian Awards, a 2012 Academic AllAmerican award as well as two Luke Fusco Academic Achievement Awards for the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons.

Laurier launched the Outstanding Women of Laurier award in 2006 to recognize female students who combine athletic and academic achievement with an active commitment to the community through volunteerism.

“It’s really exciting, it’s still just sinking in to be completely honest,” Lester told the media after receiving the award, “To be named owl this year, when there are so many great female athletes out there, so many that I’m friends with, it’s awesome, a great honor.”

Lester accepted the award in front of an attending crowd of more than 250 people at the luncheon. Seven women were competing for the award including fellow finalists Carmen Baker of women’s rugby and Doreen Bonsu of women’s basketball. During her tenure with the Hawks Lester helped lead the team to two OUA Championships in 2009-10 and 2011-12. In that time she has also been named an OUA women’s hockey First Team All-Star twice and was named the 2012-13 Golden Hawks women’s hockey MVP.

The event this year included a keynote address by Kitchener native Kelly VanderBeek, a three-time World Cup downhill skiing medalist and 2006 Olympian. The event was hosted by Laurier alumna Daiene Vernile, anchor and producer for CTV Southwestern Ontario’s Provincewide.

Anthony and Dell Selected in Fifth Round of CFL Draft The Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks were well represented in the 2013 CFL Canadian Draft in May, with veteran Hawks Isaac Dell and Alex Anthony being drafted in the fifth round. Dell was selected 37th overall by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. The 6-1, 218 lbs, Niagara Falls, Ont., native joined the Golden Hawks for the 2009 football season quickly becoming one of the Hawks top offensive players. In his four seasons with the Hawks Dell has totaled over 700 yards and had six touchdowns. At the CFL E-Camp in March, Dell put in a strong showing as he finished third overall in both the broad jump and 3-cone drill.

up over 850 yards in receptions and eight touchdowns. He showed his skills to CFL scouts in the 40 yard dash at the CFL E-Camp where he put up the eighth fastest time, clocking a time of 4.626 seconds. Both players continue a proud tradition of Golden Hawk Alumni being drafted into the CFL, following Shamawd Chambers who was drafted 6th overall in the 2012 draft.

Anthony would go just two picks after Dell as he was taken by the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Anthony, a 6-2, 205 lbs. receiver from Victoria, B.C. joined the Hawks in 2009. After four seasons with Laurier, Anthony has put

Squires Skips Team Ontario in Tikka Plays for Canada at 2013 Canadian Junior Championships Summer Universaide In February 2013, Golden Hawks men’s curling skip Aaron Squires of St. Thomas, Ont., traveled to Fort McMurray, Alta., to skip for Team Ontario at the M&M Meat Shops Canadian Junior Curling Championships.

On April 18, 2013 it was announced that Golden Hawks women’s soccer defender and veteran Kelsey Tikka would be one of 20 student-athletes who would be representing Canada at the 2013 Summer Universiade in Kazan, Russia from July 6-17.

Squires, who has curled for two seasons with the Hawks, was named a 2011-12 OUA First Team All-Star as well as being named the 2012-13 Wilfrid Laurier men’s curling MVP.

Tikka, a Thunder Bay, Ont. native, is a two-time CIS AllCanadian and was recently named the 2012-13 recipient of Laurier’s President’s Award as the top female athlete at the University. In her three seasons with the Hawks, Tikka has earned a host of league awards including being named the 2010 CIS Women’s Soccer Rookie of the Year, a three time OUA AllStar and a 2011 CIS Academic All-Canadian.

Squires would lead Team Ontario to a 7-3 record in the tournament throwing them into a tiebreaker with Team Manitoba. Though they led Manitoba through the majority of the game, a ninth end three-spot from Manitoba put them into the lead. The tiebreaker loss meant that Squires and Team Ontario would finish 4th in the tournament. Squires would follow up the tournament by skipping the Golden Hawks men’s curling team in the 2013 OUA Championships in February, finishing just out of Championship contention.

Tikka also becomes the second Golden Hawk women’s soccer player to compete at the biennial event joining former teammate Alyssa Lagonia of Kitchener, Ont., who competed for Canada in 2011. Canada is coming off of a strong fifth place performance at the 2011 Universiade in Shenzhen, China.

I want to thank you for all of your support. To all of our staff, faculty, students, alumni and donors – thank you for your ongoing passion, commitment and contributions. I look forward to meeting you in the stands, and I’m sure you’ll be as inspired as I am as we cheer on our varsity athletes!
