2010/2011 Season in Review On the basketball court, the women’s squad had its best season ever under head coach Paul Falco as they posted an impressive 15-7 record in regular season play. The Lady Hawks got off to a fast start by rolling out a five-game winning streak to begin the season against OUA East opponents. Leading the way were the four starting veterans and great play from rookie point guard Felicia Mazerolle. Laurier would head into the semester break with a 6-2 record. The Golden Hawks continued their strong play in the winter semester but ran into trouble against nationally ranked opponents in Windsor and Western. Though the final scores of three of the games were within ten points, Laurier knew they would face a very difficult task come playoffs and fell back to the no. 3 seed in the OUA West. Closing out the regular season with a three-game winning streak, the purple and gold were all set to host Guelph in the first round of the playoffs. Three Golden Hawks were recognized for their regular season play with Paul Falco earning OUA West Coach of the Year honours, Felicia Mazerolle taking home the OUA West Rookie of the Year award and Renata Adamczyk was named the Joy Bellinger Award recipient in recognition of her service to the game and university athletics. Mazerolle was also named to the all-rookie team and Adamczyk was recognized as a first-team OUA all-star. After a strong victory over the Gryphons, they came face-to-face with the rival Mustangs in the OUA quarter-finals. Laurier was able to come back from a 14-point deficit in the third quarter and hold on for the 76-74 win. After upsetting the no. 3 team in the country to secure a CIS regional qualifier position, Laurier would do battle with the no. 2 nationally ranked Lancers. Windsor was able to hold off the Golden Hawks forcing them to square off against Toronto for OUA Bronze. The purple and gold would surrender their lead late in the third and fall to the Varsity Blues, seeding the Golden Hawks in the West Regionals. At the regional tournament Laurier defeated the UQAM Citadins 61-51 to advance to the regional final. There they took on the host Regina Cougars in front of 2,000 home town fans. The purple and gold got out to a solid start and defeated the No. 3 ranked Cougars for only the second time this season in their home gym. The win moved Laurier to the national championship in Windsor where there were seeded seventh.

2010-2011 Road to Nationals Nov 5/10 @ Queen's W 63-53 Laurier opened the season with a big road win over over the Gaels. Veteran wing Renata Adamczyk was at the forefront of Laurier's attack leading the team with 19 points and 11 rebounds. She fell three steals short of the triple double. Megan Grant was the only other Golden Hawk who scored in double digits, chipping in ten points in the victory. Nov 6/10 @ RMC W 78-43 In a team effort Laurier pounced all over RMC on the road for their second win. Four players hit double digits in points, including a strong showing by rookie guard Laura Doyle whose 14 led all scorers. Doreen Bonsu and Alena Luciani also put up other key minutes off the bench and contributed to the Golden Hawks great rebounding. HISTORY OF WILFRID LAURIER UNIVERSITY In 1910 the Canada Synod and Synod of Central Canada of the Lutheran Church entered into an agreement to establish a Lutheran Seminary. Though the location first proposed for the Seminary was Toronto, Waterloo was selected when its citizens offered a tract of land on the boundary of the town. The choice of location was affected, too, by the fact that the majority of Lutherans in Ontario lived in the vicinity of Waterloo and Berlin (Kitchener). In 1911 the Evangelical Lutheran Seminary of Canada opened its doors. Facilities for pre-theological education were established in 1914 with courses leading to senior matriculation given in Waterloo College School. In 1924 the Waterloo College of Arts, providing courses in post-secondary education in a four year program, was established. In 1925 the Faculty of Arts, under the name of Waterloo College, affiliated with the University of Western Ontario. Waterloo College soon began to offer Honours degree programs in the arts. The affiliation with the University of Western Ontario ended in 1960 when the Seminary obtained a revised charter changing the name of the institution to Waterloo Lutheran University. On November 1, 1973, Waterloo Lutheran University became Wilfrid Laurier University, one of Ontario’s provincially assisted universities after Bill 178 was given Royal Assent by the Lieutenant Governor, former Wilfrid Laurier University Chancellor William Ross Macdonald.
