2011-2012 Season in Review

The No. 1 Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks regained their title as OUA Champions in 2011-12 as they won their eighth championship in nine seasons to cap what was an incredible bounce-back season from the disappointment of the 2010-11 campaign.

One year after seeing their run of seven-straight OUA titles come to a stunning end, the Golden Hawks refocused and set out to prove that last year was just a blip on the radar. The Hawks got off to a great start to the year, winning their first seven games, including the first four on the road. What made the start even more impressive was the fact that the team won both close contests as well as high-scoring affairs. Despite the early success, Laurier still had one big question mark and that was who would take over the reins as the number one netminder for the season. With the departure of fifth-year senior Liz Knox and the abrupt loss of Kristen Kilgallen from the team before the start of the regular season, the onus would fall to either Rachel Hamilton or rookie Erika Thunder. Hamilton was given the first opportunity, and she won her first four games but Thunder took over in late October and never looked back. She would go on to start 20 of Laurier's next 22 regular season games.

Captain Abby Rainsberry and assistants (left to right) Fiona Lester, Alicia Martin and Katherine Shirriff accept Laurier's 2011-2012 OUA Championship banner and trophy.

After the team suffered their first setback of the year, a 3-2 overtime loss to the nationally-ranked Guelph Gryphons, the Hawks would go on an incredible run, winning their final 18 regular season contests and in the process, taking over the No. 1 ranking in the country for the first time since 2006. Laurier would finish the regular season with a 25-0-1 record, going undefeated in regulation for the second time in three years and third time overall. Unlike the year before when Katherine Shirriff and Laura Brooker provided much of the team's offence, the Hawks received contributions from up-and-down the lineup. Second year forwards Tammy Freiburger and Brooker led the team with 30 points each while also finishing one-two in OUA scoring as Freiburger had 18 goals while Brooker had 17. Four other players would surpass the 20 point plateau, including Paula Lagamba, Abby Rainsberry, Caitlin Muirhead and Shirriff. With such a deep offensive team, as well as posting their traditional stingy defensive statistics, Laurier once again found themselves as the favourites heading into the playoffs. Their opening round matchup against the Brock Badgers saw the Hawks survive a Game 1 scare, as they won 4-2 on home ice. In Game 2 of the series, defenceman Blair Connelly scored a pair of goals to help the Hawks sweep the quarter-final in two games. Laurier faced perhaps their toughest test of the season in their semifinal series with the Windsor Lancers. Windsor, who was coming off an upset victory over the Gryphons in their first round series, rode the hot goaltending of Julia Ouroumis to pull off a stunning 1-0 victory in Game 1 of the series. Facing elimination on the road, the purple and gold jumped out to an early lead, winning 4-1 to force a third and deciding game. In another hard-fought game, the Hawks' Fiona Lester scored the game winning goal less than a minute after the Lancers had tied the game, as they skated away with a 3-1 victory to claim the series. The Hawks would move on to face the Western Mustangs in the OUA Championship series. Western, who were playing for their first OUA banner after upsetting the Toronto Varsity Blues and the York Lions, were outmatched from the opening puck drop. Laurier would go on to post victories of 4-1 and 5-1 to claim their 10th OUA women's hockey title in school history.

ABOUT WILFRID LAURIER UNIVERSITY Wilfrid Laurier is a smaller institution, with small class sizes and a sense of community second to none. Founded in 1911, Laurier is a premier university and renowned for attracting students who want to succeed. The school offers an unparalleled academic experience. Our unique, interdisciplinary approach to learning allows students to combine majors in completely different fields. The faculty, among the finest anywhere, expand the horizons of our students, providing them with a broad perspective of the world that opens up new ways of thinking and seeing things. Laurier offers a broad range of full and part-time graduate and undergraduate degree programs to over 14,000 students through 7 faculties. Our Faculty of Arts is our largest faculty. Our Faculty of Music has the only Masters of Music Therapy program in Canada. Laurier’s Faculty of Science is one of Canada’s leading teaching and research institutions. Our School of Business & Economics is one of Canada’s largest Business schools, and also among the most respected. We also have a Faculty of Education, a Faculty of Social Work and a Faculty of Graduate Studies. Our Brantford Campus is dedicated to innovative programming within the liberal arts.

University Stadium, refurbished with $5 million in 2007 seats 6,500 people is the home to many Golden Hawk Varsity Teams.

Laurier is a place where the curious thrive, and where innovative programs and state of the art facilities give way to students who achieve success and results. Wilfrid Laurier offers a high quality undergraduate education in the Liberal Arts, Science, Business and Music. We pride ourselves on the strength of our graduates, which we feel reflect the quality of our university and its programs. Laurier grads get jobs, with 94.3% of our recent graduates securing employment within six months after graduating, Laurier’s employment rates are among the highest in the province. Our innovative programs attract the best and brightest students from across the world. In September 2006, our first year students had an incoming average of 81.4%. Our co-op programs within the Faculty of Arts, the Faculty of Science, and the School of Business and Economics, present students with the opportunity to pair quality work experience with their academics.

The John Aird Center, which acts as the main entrance to the campus, was built in 1988. Visit the Robert Langen Art Gallery for a touch of art and stop by the Maureen Forrester Recital Hall to hear the internationally renowned Penderecki String Quartet.

Wilfrid Laurier is known across the country as an institution with high quality students and professors, and a community environment that fosters academic and personal growth. We consistently come out strong in reputational surveys such as Maclean’s Annual Rankings of Universities and the Globe and Mail Rankings.

HISTORY OF WILFRID LAURIER UNIVERSITY In 1910 the Canada Synod and Synod of Central Canada of the Lutheran Church entered into an agreement to establish a Lutheran Seminary. Though the location first proposed for the Seminary was Toronto, Waterloo was selected when its citizens offered a tract of land on the boundary of the town. The choice of location was affected, too, by the fact that the majority of Lutherans in Ontario lived in the vicinity of Waterloo and Berlin (Kitchener). In 1911 the Evangelical Lutheran Seminary of Canada opened its doors. Facilities for pre-theological education were established in 1914 with courses leading to senior matriculation given in Waterloo College School. In 1924 the Waterloo College of Arts, providing courses in post-secondary education in a four year program, was established. In 1925 the Faculty of Arts, under the name of Waterloo College, affiliated with the University of Western Ontario. Waterloo College soon began to offer Honours degree programs in the arts. The affiliation with the University of Western Ontario ended in 1960 when the Seminary obtained a revised charter changing the name of the institution to Waterloo Lutheran University. On November 1, 1973, Waterloo Lutheran University became Wilfrid Laurier University, one of Ontario’s provincially assisted universities after Bill 178 was given Royal Assent by the Lieutenant Governor, former Wilfrid Laurier University Chancellor William Ross Macdonald.
