Wilhelmsen Ship Management (WSM) marks our 45th year in third party ship management this year.
To be exact, the papers that were involved in the establishment of WSM were signed on 1 October 1975 in Hong Kong with the name Barber Ship Management Ltd inked as the company name.
This takes us back to the time of our forefathers...
In 1883, brothers Herbert and James Wells Barber established the Barber & Co shipbroking
and chartering company in New York. In 1901, they founded the New York & Oriental Steamship Company, later known as Barber Steamship Lines, Inc. James’s son, Edward J (Ted), joined and became owner of the company two years after Herbert’s death in 1915.
In 1928, the long-standing relationship with Wilh Wilhelmsen (WW) began with a charter of five
newly built motor ships for the Barber Steamships Lines from the US east coast to the Far East. The five ships that created history for WSM under Barber Steamship Lines were Tai Yang, Tai Yin, Tai Ping, Tai Ping Yang and Tai Shan (The Tai series carry Chinese names meaning sun, moon, good fortune, peace and Pacific). The new service to Far East was marketed as the BarberWilhelmsen Line.

On 17 June 1969, Barber Lines A/S was
established to integrate liner services run by Barber Steamship Line, Barber-Wilhelmsen Line and Fern-Ville Lines with WW owning 50 percent of the company.
In 1975, to retain older vessels and mitigate
high crew costs, the company made the move to bring in Asians therefore, Barber Ship
Management Ltd was registered in Hong Kong. WW resolved in 1979 to market itself as key player in the maritime sector. A separate
department handled technical and maritime operation of vessels, supplemented with
external and internal consultancy services.
Feature
It was a successful step and over the years, the company was entrusted with more types of vessels from various nations.
The maritime section was revamped in
1983, and subsequently had its own proďŹ t centre called Barber Ship Management (BSM) comprising BSM in Hong Kong, Wilh Wilhelmsen Ship Management in Oslo and Wilh. Wilhelmsen Technical Consultants (Wiltec).
In 1980, Barber Steamship Lines became
wholly owned by WW when Edward J Barber decided to sell out to the company’s closest commercial partner of over 60 years.
The management of BSM transferring to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, in 1994 and
subsequently taking the name Wilhelmsen Ship Management in 2008 under holding company Wilhelmsen Maritime Services
in efforts to strengthen corporate identity among sister companies under the Wilhelmsen name.
In 2018, Wilhelmsen Ship Management moves its head office to Singapore, the maritime hub of Asia. 6

A JUST CULTURE AMONG EMPLOYEES
Our fundamental operating philosophy, Performance with Care focuses on People as
one of the elements. In Wilhelmsen Ship Management, we want to create an environment
where our employees can thrive – a safe environment that allows them to reach their goals. The essence of Just Culture is not entirely new to us, for decades we have been guided
by our policies, systems, processes and company values which hold a strong foundation to this culture.
With Just Culture, we aim to breed an atmosphere of trust and responsible behavior
where employees can share essential information without fear through accountability, empathy and fair & just system.
36
WManager
Accountability is a leadership quality that we value in our employees. We are not only immersed in the responsibility of our roles, but also take ownership of our success and even failures. Our employees are empowered to act within predefined limits and make adjustments if required.
Since not everything will go exactly to plan, empathy at work really comes into play when things
are going wrong, like when projects get cancelled or budget outcome deviates from goal. We see more empathy shown in recent months when the pandemic brought out listening ears, patience and understanding among team members when they reach out to colleagues who are having a tough time adjusting to the new norm.
We strive to create a fair and just system as we know expecting perfection is not reasonable.
We are all human beings and we make mistakes – earnest human mistakes. When mistakes do
occur, we will conduct a fair investigation and are committed to mitigate the same from happening again. We value learning from mistakes and seek to improve from it.
With Just Culture, we want to increase the motivation to learn and improve from our mistakes and encourage each other to be forthcoming in speaking up. Most importantly ,the big picture is to
improve our safety standards and also to create a thriving environment where we can reach our highest potential.

THE ART OF GIVING
The Wilhelmsen head office in Norway has gathered many paintings and drawings throughout the years by donations, gifts, collections from vessels and even contributions from near and far.
Instead of letting the art be packed away in storage, the group held an art sale for the employees in Lysaker where all proceeds would go to charitable causes.
The Mission to Seafarers is one of the organization selected to receive the funds. The non-profit
organization works to reunite crew with their families by providing transportation to get them back home, and provision of essential items to affected crews and their families who are not able to sign-on and work due to lockdowns. 38
WManager
The proceeds from the art sale, together with the earlier crowdfunding activities organized
by Wilhelmsen Ship Management, have raised more than GBP 12,000 to be channeled to seafarers in need through The Mission to Seafarers.
We would like to thank those who have
donated and supported this cause to protect the wellbeing of our seafarers.
