OUT THERE

We go wherever the challenges are, push ourselves to the very edge of what’s known and keep going. We are determined to forge solutions. We are diverse and welcoming. We embrace our responsibility to Oregon and the world, building a future that’s smarter, healthier, more prosperous and more just. We see what could be and have worked relentlessly for 150 years to make it so. We are Oregon’s leading public research university with two campuses, 11 colleges and a statewide presence. We offer more than 200 academic programs, experiential learning opportunities such as research, internships and study abroad — something to fit every interest and the resources to fulfill any career goal. Our students, staff and faculty work hard. And it shows:

• We receive more research funding than any other university in Oregon. • We are home to the No. 2 forestry and No. 3 oceanography programs in the world. • Our faculty and alumni have invented the artificial heart valve and the maraschino cherry, and founded companies like McMenamins and E-TRADE. We’re proud to call Corvallis home and proud to be part of one of the smartest, safest, most sustainable and best allaround college towns in the U.S. Come tour our historic campus, cheer for the Beavs at a sporting event, gain new perspectives from a lecture by one of our notable faculty or spend an evening at a play or musical performance. Corvallis, the Storyteller Walk it • Bike it • Drive it • Enjoy it! C orvallis’ collective memory whispers along its tree-lined streets, punctuated with colorful gardens, majestic trees, and framed with built reminders of our shared past. Walk it, bike it, drive it, and discover our stories.

Experience the ambiance of Corvallis’ vibrant, walkable downtown along the Willamette River and Riverfront Park. In outstanding historic structures, restaurants and brew pubs offer locally-grown cuisine, and unique shops. Early enterprises along 2nd Street outfitted Oregon and California gold miners. For a step back in time, visit the 1856 Avery Building, 400 SW 2nd Street, Corvallis’ oldest hardware and implements store. In 1846, William Dixon filed a claim north of Joseph Avery’s claim. These adjoining founders’ claims met where today’s Benton County Courthouse reigns over downtown. The 1888 Benton County Courthouse is the oldest courthouse in Oregon still used for its original purpose. Benton County offers driving tours – three of them! Explore each of these scenic loops by car for a half-day excursion. Routes travel along well-maintained hard-surface roads with inspirational and photo opportunities. Pack a lunch; take your time. Distances and elevation changes offer challenging bike rides. With more than 20 sites, the Northeast Loop interprets World War II cantonment, Camp Adair, and Peavy Arboretum, once home to a Civilian Conservation Corps camp. The Northwest Loop features Civil War era Fort Hoskins, a covered bridge, wineries, and concludes at the Benton County Museum. The 33-site South Loop showcases historic cemeteries, Finley National Wildlife Refuge, architect-designed barns, and rural villages. Tour includes muscular Hull-Oakes Lumber Co., a living and working national historic site. (Tours by appointment only.)

Our Walking/Biking Tours wind through historic districts. Discover:

Avery-Helm, Corvallis’ workingman’s Historic District, includes 165 structures of late 19th and early 20th century styles, built during a time of prosperity for the neighborhood, Corvallis, and the nation. The OSU Campus Historic District, Oregon’s only collegiate district, celebrates more than 180 acres, 83 buildings, quads, and open space. Olmsted’s early campus plan demonstrates the dynamic role of the campus in the greater cultural landscape. When the college moved from downtown in the 1890s, the North College Hill historic neighborhood grew on a gentle slope. Nearby, the pedestrian-friendly College Hill West Historic District highlights nearly 400 structures and a welcoming tree canopy. The Atomic Ranch walking tour doesn’t glow in the dark, but features ground-hugging ranch homes built at the dawn of the Atomic Age. And more! On summer Saturday’s the Historic Trolley tour rolls and rings its bell through appealing historic neighborhoods like North and South Central Park, Franklin Square, and Rayburn Addition. Spend a jolly hour – or two – on the Trolley. For an adventurous blend of old and new, grab your GPS-enabled device and take the Historic Benton County Geocaching Challenge. This program explores Corvallis’ and Benton County’s byways and stories and features 27 sites – some physical caches and others virtual sites in neighborhoods, and along scenic country roads. However you see historic Corvallis – with or without wheels – slow to a leisurely pace. Fully experience our stories, adventures, hard work, success, and sense of place. Welcome.

The Great If you love the great outdoors, you’re going to fall head over heels for Corvallis. Corvallis offers over 60 miles of hiking and biking trails, both around town and throughout beautiful Benton County. Not only does the City of Corvallis maintain a network of paved paths, Corvallis and Benton County parks provide a variety of paved and unpaved trails that provide easy access to breath-taking natural areas. Ask for a trail suggestion at one of the many bike shops or at the Visitor Center. Your off-road experience begins at Bald Hill Natural Area where you can set off on a variety of adventures. Three separate parking lots lead to paved trails that branch out to single-track paths connecting to Fitton Green, Oak Creek and Cardwell Hill County Parks. You’re likely to see deer, coyotes and many species of birds.

Is it city riding you prefer? There are 20 miles of paved multi-use paths in town and there are many roads in the area that offer wide shoulders and light traffic. Depending on the route you choose you can experience rolling hills, local agriculture or if you’re up to it, go for a challenge up Sulpher Springs Road or try the impressive climb to Marys Peak. Marys Peak is the highest point in the Coastal Range at an elevation of 4,097 feet, and on a clear day you can see all the way to the Cascades or the ocean. If you’d rather explore on two feet instead of two wheels, we’re pleased to tell you that there are more than fifty great hikes nearby. You can choose a walk through town where you can tour our two historic districts, the alley art walk, and stroll along the riverfront, or you can explore nearby Peavy Arboretum, the gateway to the McDonald Research Forest. Don’t miss

protected land, visitors can view these nomadic fowl in the winter months and see other native species that call the refuge home year-round.

lovely Starker Forests, only minutes from town and full of wonderful hiking trails. If you’re feeling really adventurous, you can try the first half of the Corvallis to the Sea Trail, which just opened in September of 2017. The Corvallis to the Sea Trail will be a 60-mile hiking, biking or equestrian trail that’ll lead you from Corvallis to the Oregon Coast. When the trail is completed you’ll be able to follow it all the way to Ona Beach, a bit south of Newport, Oregon. For now, though, you can try the 32mile stretch that takes you from downtown Corvallis to the Big Elk Campground, about halfway to the coast.

Corvallis’ natural abundance isn’t just for hikers and cyclists. If you enjoy birdwatching and wildlife, we’ve got plenty for you, as well. Bird lovers will appreciate the care that William L. Finley National Wildlife Refuge has taken to provide a winter habitat for migrating Dusky Canadian geese. With over 5,000 acres of

Other birding and wildlife hot spots in or near Corvallis include the E.E. Wilson Wildlife Area, Chip Ross and Avery Parks, Mardi’s Meadow, the Jackson-Frazier Wetland and Beazell Memorial forest. The Corvallis Audubon Society offers frequent birding field trips, both on foot and on bike. There are plenty of opportunities for other outdoor adventures as well. Additional hiking information is available at the Visit Corvallis office, and on the Visit Corvallis website visitcorvallis.com.

Dining

For a town of this size there’s no shortage of cuisine options available. Chef and owner Kimber Hoang of Magenta serves up different foods of Southeast Asia, using organic local produce and meats in her seasonal menus. Big River offers a wide variety of healthy menu choices. They utilize ingredients found in and around the Willamette Valley and from the Oregon Coast, which is only an hour away. Del Alma brings vibrant flavors of Latin America, while Cloud & Kelly’s offers a wee bit of Ireland right here in Corvallis.

More casual atmospheres can be found at several local breweries like Block 15, Sky High Brewing and Flat Tail Brewing. American Dream Pizza features gourmet pizzas, hand rolled crusts, homemade pizza sauces and an amazing array of cheeses and toppings. Adjacent is Crowbar, which takes pride in mixing tasty cocktails using their liquor infusions and freshly muddled juices. Many restaurants in town serve local wines and craft brews for just the right pairings.

There are an array of food and wine events throughout the year, beginning in January with Corvallis Culinary Week, Rhapsody in the Vineyard in March, the Craft Beer Picnic in July and Septembeerfest in September. For more information on all of our events happening throughout the year, please visit our website: visitcorvallis.com.

Arts & Culture There’s a lot to enjoy in Corvallis: the food, the beer, the wine, and the great outdoors, just for starters. We’re also a university town, and Oregon State brings a lot to the table when it comes to providing fun things to do and see. But a big part of the town’s appeal lies in our active and vibrant arts and culture community. Corvallis has an embarrassment of riches in the arts, including art shows, theater, music, performance arts, and more. One great example is the Corvallis Mural Project, which is splashing colorful murals all across Corvallis. Jennifer Moreland, inspired by the gorgeous murals she found all over Los Angeles, launched the Corvallis Mural Project in 2016. Thanks to Moreland’s efforts, 20 stunning murals now dot downtown Corvallis, with more on the way.

We also have many lovely - and historic! venues at which you can enjoy the arts. Downtown we have the Majestic Theater, originally built as an 800-seat grand movie palace and vaudeville hall in 1913. Today it serves as a creative laboratory, meeting place and performance venue for a vibrant community of artists and a diverse audience. Another is the Whiteside Theatre, with its newly restored marquee, which showcases the commitment of the Whiteside Theater Foundation to refurbishing this 91-year-old historical monument. The Arts Center, another historic building that began life as a church in the late 1800s, is dedicated to integrating the arts into community life. It offers dynamic collaboration, innovative outreach programs, diverse exhibitions and cultural events, and creative educational

opportunities. The Darkside Theater is the only independent, locally-owned movie theater in Corvallis and features art and independent films, along with hosting old classics and great, movie-themed events. The Corvallis community is enriched with performances as Oregon State University students’ share their talents through the Chamber Choir, the symphony, chamber ensembles, jazz ensembles, solo recitals, the OSU Marching Band, and more. Performances are listed on the University’s web calendar and on the quarterly community events calendar. There are many other venues to enjoy the Corvallis nightlife scene, from bluegrass to blues, folk to classical. Check the Visit Corvallis website to see live music and dance listings.

Agritourism

If you think agritourism might be boring or dirty or not worth the time, think again. It puts a face to local farming and is a unique way to experience Benton County’s working landscapes. Here are a sampling of places you can visit:

OSU’s Pilot Brewery is a result of its thriving fermentation science program. Stop in to see what students majoring in fermentation science are learning about beer making. Research is conducted at OSU that benefits the micro brewing industry.

Corvallis, home of the original

Goat yoga has been an international viral sensation popping up as far as Australia and South Africa. The original, though, is helmed by Lainey Morse & Heather Davis of Corvallis Oregon, and they’ve got something big in the works: the Goatel, which, sensibly, is a hotel with goats. Nestled atop a beautiful hill in the Willamette Valley, The Goatel Retreat Center is a place for you to disconnect from stress, depression or illness and find your inner calm and recharge. Come spend some time with the goats and see for yourself just how powerful Goat Therapy can be. You can attend one of our Yoga Retreats, you can book The Goatel and create your own weekend retreat, or just bring your friends for a “Slumber Party” (no Yoga) weekend, and hang out with goats for Goat Happy Hour. The Goatel is also perfect for private events like corporate health & wellness and team bonding events. We will customize every retreat and event for you.

Goat Yoga

Our property in Corvallis Oregon has been well-known for the past 30 years. The owner, Pat Covey of the Hanson Country Inn, a historic bed-and-breakfast helps to create the experience. Morse says she’s been offering goat yoga classes on the inn’s property for about a year now, so they’re the perfect partner for the new enterprise. The Goatel will be the first vacation destination in the world to offer goat yoga and goat happy hours along with hikes in the Coastal Mountains, local brewery and winery tours, organic meals from local purveyors, and more. The goats on the property are always there for people to bond with, for them to help bottle feed babies, or to just sit next to and cuddle. Goat therapy is the best therapy and we want to cater this toward people who really need to get away from it all and recharge.

Contact Lainey Morse at info@thegoatel.com or by calling 1-888-992-GOAT (4628)
