A personal mobile concierge can help you even before you arrive!

Welcome to Corvallis

We are so pleased that you have chosen to visit our community, whether for business, pleasure or both. Corvallis is a delightful City in either case. You’ll find that Corvallis is an easy place to navigate. The downtown and University neighborhoods are highly walkable, and the city has been named one of the nations’ most bicycle-friendly. I encourage you to explore the many unique, locally owned shops, restaurants, art galleries and other attractions as part of your visit. Stroll our lovely Riverfront, which features a lively Farmer’s market on most Saturday and Wednesday mornings and a central fountain perfect for people watching and cooling off on a warm summer day. Just blocks from downtown, you’ll find Oregon State University with its historic campus and a host of activities year-round. Whether your preference is Pac 12 athletics, notable lectures, music or theater performances, or a visit to the OSU Beaver Store for a keepsake from your visit, OSU can meet your needs. Corvallis’ location in the heart of the Willamette Valley also means you are just minutes away from a multitude of other recreational opportunities. The city also hosts a variety of festivals, fairs and special events throughout the year.

Check out hotel amenities, e local events, dining & shopping, book a shuttle or room, send a free postcard and even play free games.

Be sure and stop in at the Corvallis Visitor Center, 420 NW 2nd Street and chat with an expert on things to see and do in Corvallis. As you get to know this highly livable college town, perhaps you’ll find yourself wondering about Corvallis as a place to live or do business. The influence of a major research university, thriving sectors of high tech, agribusiness, biosciences and green energy, and an educated workforce result in a solid local economy. In fact, Forbes magazine ranks Corvallis among its top 20 Best Small Places for Business and careers. Our local Chamber of Commerce or staff at the City of Corvallis can provide additional information about doing business here.

F

or a town of this size there’s no shortage of cuisine options available. Chef and owner Kimber Hoang of Magenta serves up different foods of Southeast Asia, using organic local produce and meats in her seasonal menus. Big River offers a wide variety of healthy menu choices. They utilize ingredients found in and around the Willamette Valley and from the Oregon Coast, which is only an hour away.

Del Alma brings vibrant flavors of Latin America, while Cloud & Kelly’s offers a wee bit of Ireland right here in Corvallis.

Many restaurants in town serve local wines and craft brews for just the right pairings.

More casual atmospheres can be found at several local breweries like Block 15, Sky High Brewing and Flat Tail Brewing. American Dream Pizza features gourmet pizzas, hand rolled crusts, homemade pizza sauces and an amazing array of cheeses and toppings. Just upstairs is Crowbar, which takes pride in mixing tasty cocktails using their liquor infusions and freshly muddled juices.

There are an array of food and wine events throughout the year, beginning in January with Corvallis Culinary Week, Rhapsody in the Vineyard in March, the Craft Beer Picnic in July and Septembeerfest in September. For more information on all of our events happening throughout the year, please visit our website.

Each spring, the CO Corvallis Maker Fair brings together over 1,000 artists, technologists, innovators, do-it-yourself enthusiasts, community members and students of all ages to Oregon State University to celebrate the “makers” movement here in town. Though the maker culture is exploding around the world, the Willamette Valley has long been host to a multitude of makers. From microbreweries to artisanal cheese and wine, sophisticated motion capture technology, to innovative nuclear technology, or legged running robots to man-powered kinetic sculptures, Corvallis thrives on innovation and creativity. .

Wineries

Home of many locally owned and nationally known wineries, the Heart of Willamette Wineries invite you to come sip all of their flavors. These boutique vineyards enjoy some of the most favorable grape-growing conditions in the Willamette Valley and the wine makers will gladly tell you their stories. This is part of what makes wine tasting here so much fun. Mostly family owned, these stewards place equally high value in producing quality pinots and other varietals while being completely committed to sustainable practices. The tasting rooms are set in beautiful countryside with plenty of opportunities to picnic, relax and explore. Breweries

Five different breweries make their homes in Corvallis. Block 15 pairs their amazing beers, made with organic base malt, imported specialty malts and Northwest hops, with excellent, locallysourced food and makes both following strict sustainability practices. Flat Tail Brewery has won several awards over the years and their sports bar atmosphere makes it a fun place to watch a game. Sky High, Mazama Brewing and Oregon Trail Brewery all offer great venues and brews. In addition to craft beers, Two Towns Ciderhouse specializes in crisp, fantastic ciders made from locally produced apples, honey and other special ingredients. New on the scene is Honey Creek Nectar Wine, a refreshing light beverage all made with local honey.

Distilleries & Cider Houses

Benton County may be best known for its wine and microbrews, but our distilleries are making news too. We are home to 4 Spirits Distillery, known for its small-batch vodka and bourbon whiskey, and Vivacity Spirits, which specializes in a super-smooth vodka made from local organic corn. Cascadia Expeditions offers three different tours of area wineries and craft beverage trips for your enjoyment. They are offering morning and afternoon hiking trips with the added bonus of beer tastings in the afternoon. They also have tours that include a Breakfast with the Birds Float, Craft Brew River Tour and on May 1, 7 and 14, 2016 they will feature a paddling for PinotKayaking and Winery Tour. 4 Spirits Distillery 6040 NE Marcus Harris Ave Adair Village 503-999-7758 4spiritsdistillery.com Hard Times Distillery 175 S 5th St Monroe 541-207-8354 hardtimesdistillery.com Vivacity Spirits Distillery 720 NE Granger Ave Corvallis 541-286-4285 vivacityspirits.com 2 Towns Ciderhouse 33930 SE Eastgate Circle Corvallis 541-207-3915 2townsciderhouse.com Spiritopia Distilling 720 NE Granger Ave Bldg B Corvallis 541-990-0337 spiritopia.com

arts&culture

The food, brew culture, wine and outdoor recreation, along with being a university town, all contribute to making Corvallis a wonderful place to visit. But a big part of the town’s appeal lies in our arts and culture community. There’s an abundance of visual, performing arts and musical theater throughout town. One example is the Corvallis Arts Guild, with their wonderful “hanging around town” program. With over 100 members who have been juried into the Guild, they are allowed to hang their works in a variety of public places, from offices to banks, restaurants, doctor’s offices and more. These local original artworks rotate on a monthly or bi-monthly basis and most works are for sale.

One unique venue in downtown is the Majestic Theater, originally built as an 800 seat grand movie palace and vaudeville hall in 1913. Today it serves as a creative laboratory, meeting place and performance venue for a vibrant community of artists and a diverse audience. The newly restored marquee at the Whiteside Theater showcases the commitment of their restoration foundation to restoring this 91-year old historical monument. The Arts Center is dedicated to integrating the arts into community life. They offer dynamic collaboration, innovative outreach programs, diverse exhibitions and cultural events and creative educational opportunities.

The Darkside Theater is the only independent, locally-owned movie theater in Corvallis. The Corvallis community is enriched with performances as Oregon State University students’ share their talents through the Chamber choir, the OSU Marching Band, the symphony, chamber ensembles, jazz ensembles, solo recitals and more Performances are listed on the University’s web calendar and on the quarterly community events calendar. There are many other venues to enjoy the Corvallis nightlife scene, from bluegrass to blues, folk to classical. Check in our website to view live music and dance listings.

The Great Outdoors Whether you are a birding or biking enthusiast you can find it all in and around Corvallis.

Bird lovers will appreciate the care that William L. Finley National Wildlife Refuge has taken to provide a winter habitat for migrating Dusky Canadian geese. With over 5,000 acres of protected land, visitors can view these nomadic fowl in the winter months and explore other native species that call the refuge home year-round. Other birding “hot spots” in or near Corvallis include the E.E. Wilson Wildlife Area, Chip Ross and Avery Parks, Mardi’s Meadow, the Jackson-Frazier Wetland and Beazell Memorial forest. The Corvallis Audubon Society offers frequent birding field trips on foot and on bike. Speaking of bikes- did you know that Corvallis has over 60 miles of biking and hiking trails throughout town and into surrounding countryside? Not only does the City of Corvallis maintain a network of paved paths, Corvallis and Benton County parks provide a variety of paved and unpaved trails that provide easy access to beautiful natural areas. Ask for a trail suggestion at one of the many bike shops or at the Visitor Center. Your off-road adventure begins at Bald Hill Natural Area where you can set off on a variety of adventures. Three separate parking lots lead to paved trails that branch out to singletrack paths connectiing to Fitton Green, Oak Creek and Cardwell Hill County Parks. You’re liable to see deer, coyotes and many species of birds. Is it “city riding” you prefer? There are twenty miles of paved multi-use paths in town and there are many roads in the area that offer wide shoulders and light traffic. Depending on the route you choose you can experience rolling hills, local agriculture or if you’re up to it, go for a challenge up Sulpher Springs Road or the impressive climb to Marys Peak. Marys Peak is the highest point in the Coastal Range at an elevation of 4097 feet, and on a clear day you can see all the way to the Cascades or the ocean. 28

“Marys Peak is the highest point in the Coastal Range at an elevation of 4097 feet, and on a clear day you can see all the way to the Cascades or the ocean.” If you’d rather explore on two feet instead of two wheels, well we’re pleased to tell you there is more than fifty great hikes nearby. You can choose a walk through town where you can tour two distinct historic districts, alley art and stroll along the riverfront, or you can choose to explore the great outdoors at nearby Peavy Arboretum- the gateway to the McDonald Research Forest. Or visit the astonishing Starker Forests only minutes from town. Additional hiking information is available at the Visit Corvallis office. There are plenty of opportunities for other outdoor adventures as well. Make sure to check the resource section in the back of this guide for information on where to access the river for boating, swimming, fishing or for nearby golf courses, gardens, covered bridges and more. Some of the best ways to explore these outdoor amenities is to schedule a trip with Cascadia Expeditions. They are offering morning and afternoon hiking trips with the added bonus of beer tastings in the afternoon. They also have tours that include a Breakfast with the Birds Float, Craft Brew River Tour and on May 1, 7 and 14, 2016 they will feature a Paddling for Pinot- Kayaking and Winery Tour.

They operate eleven branches of experiment and research centers in fifteen locations around the state.

They also have a thriving fermentation science program. Take a trip to the OSU Pilot Brewery to see what students majoring in fermentation science are learning about beer making. Research is conducted at OSU that benefits the micro brewing industry. Unusual Pairings and Natural Partners Corvallis Knights Baseball and Block 15 Brewery

Something Unique is Brewing at OSU’s Goss Stadium!

C

ome summertime, if you’re looking for the local hot spot to cool down and enjoy a summer night, your best bet is Goss Stadium at Coleman Field on the campus of Oregon State University. It’s the summer hang out for locals of all ages and backgrounds. It’s where friends, family, co-workers, associates and neighbors find time to kick it, catch some wood-bat baseball and enjoy a dog and a cold beer. It’s a genuine slice of Americana. While there, not only can you enjoy some fantastic baseball and that evening’s promotional fun, but you can take delight in a smooth Summer Knights Ale from Block 15 Brewing Company. The Kolsch-style beer is a fan favorite and named after the hometown team – the Corvallis Knights of the West Coast League.

36

The Knights are so craft brew happy that their new brand, unveiled last season, is a nod to the area’s affinity for all things hoppy. The team’s mark features grains and barley, tying itself to what really matters in the Mid-Valley – fine and delicious micros. Block 15 and the Knights teamed up in 2008 and have been delivering memorable guest experiences ever since. Their double play combination of hop-forward ales and family-friendly entertainment have made Goss Stadium a hopping hub of community activity. Goss Stadium is the perfect setting to chill, root and connect. From the new TnT Builders at Banners party deck to the Omaha Club Room to premium reserved seats that are all right on top of the action, there is not a bad seat in the house.

www.visitcorvallis.com | 800-334-8118 | Info@VisitCorvallis.com

And the food and drink at Knights games is affordable, accessible and most importantly local: including beers from Block 15 in addition to locally sourced cider and wines. Making it fun, and an experience that reflects the uniqueness of the greater Corvallis area is what makes the Knights and Block 15 work so well together, and so popular.

Thrilling baseball and winning beer matters. Come celebrate the Knights 10th season in Corvallis this summer. Make plans now to visit Goss Stadium to grab a game and a Block 15 brew. Tickets range from $11 for reserved and $6 for GA, if purchased in advance. To buy tickets and check out the Knights 2016 schedule, which features three spectacular fireworks shows, visit corvallisknights.com.
